Greg, I really appreciate hearing - and hearing from you - about Danny Gatton. Though the man is long gone, I continue to hear and learn more about him. So thanks - much appreciated!
Hey I came across a few of your videos a while back for the first time and loved them! I got a new iPad and I wasn’t able to watch videos for a while then I wanted to watch your videos again and made the mistake of not remembering your name. I’ve been trying to find you for a few months and finally the algorithm popped up one of your videos and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve been playing rock guitar for a while and recently got into this whole chicken picking rockabilly music and I never thought I would ever be into this type of music but this is where the best guitar players are at. You talk about how Danny Gatton was an influence on you and now your this generations Danny Gatton and your influencing many other guitar players today.
Thanks for the great story. Lots of love for Danny everywhere and here in the greater D.C. area. Barry Hart and John Previti are still playing the area and killing it. The Birchmere Gatton celebration was fantastic.
I live in Southern Maryland near where he lived. Learned about Danny through same article on the rack at Towson University. The best ever, bar none. Anyone who plays will not argue.
Nice tribute. I was surprised that you didn't mention the "N.Y. Stories" jazz CD that had Roy Hargrove and Joshua Redman on it with Danny. His tribute to Lenny Breau called "One For Lenny" is one of of the greatest virtuosic guitar compositions I have ever heard. The entire CD is just tremendous.
I've been to Shank Hall on Wisconsin Ave. Seen Greg Koch & the Tone Controls many times. Greg signed my Fender book. We grew up 20 minutes apart, same age, both guitarists. I played the Milwaukee scene too. Retired now. Great work Greg. Danny was awesome!
Greg, I think it is important for you to know that for those of us who follow you and love your music, you are a continuation of Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan and the others. So thanks for what you do and your energy and what you bring to your guitaristry.
I got to hear and see Danny Gatton live at 1140 Boylston St., Boston, MA Berklee College of Music. He SHAMED US ALL ! You could not find a professor from the largest guitar department in the world for a few weeks! I have never heard anything or anyone like that ever again ever !
My friend used to manage a place in Dallas where young artists EJ and SRV would play together. He would invite players to sit in with them. Adrain Legg played there w/ Eric several times when he was with PBS in Dallas. l was told Stevie Ray refused to play with Danny Gatton one night after a near by Gatton show at Sons of Herman hall. Danny played w/ Eric for about an hour at the club 'Tango's'. Jaws dropped to the floor. SRV was a no show. He was very picky about who he played w/ tho he obviously broke that w/ Beck but he didnt want to be upstaged on the TX blues game which Danny could do. I saw SRV and EJ there together about once per month for a couple of years but missed the Gatton set dang it.
Relentless is great, but there are 2 sessions that especially stand out, for me anyway. One is outdoors at Freedom Plaza in DC, and the other is at a Holiday Inn in Arlington VA. All three. Legendary!
Really enjoy Greg's stories and personal experiences with Danny Gatton, very cool, intimate stuff. Greg is one of my favorite guitarists in the world! Saw him a few years ago down here in FL, he is the coolest guy, mind-blowing guitarist!
Danny Gatton was astounding, I love watching his instructional videos - they are jaw dropping. Really enjoyed your personal stories Greg, it's cool that you got to meet him like that. I wish I could have seen you guys on tour together.
I was leaving a venue at the end of the show when "Melancholy Serenade" came over the P.A system. It so other worldly I had to go back inside and hunt down the sound man to find out what it was. I've been a Danny fan ever since.
Great story Greg..... Danny was a master..... I got to jam with his guitar tech Jay Montrose in a club here in New Jersey. Chatted with him a bit he was very distraught about Danny's passing. Thanks Greg always a pleasure to visit you on RUclips.
I had never heard of Danny Gatton until a few weeks ago when a performance came up on my RUclips feed. I didn't know what to expect and I'm not easily impressed. What I watched absolutely floored me. He was crazy good and hugely entertaining. He had a few gimmicks like playing with a bottle and playing with a cloth over the strings. Normally gimmicks would put me off but his playing was stunning. I'm getting into Danny Gatton now. What a tragic loss he is to the music world.
greg i definately see danny in you. i have always thought that. the two of you together would be something to behold my friend. you could hold your own in my opinion.
Tele players like Danny and Roy are so impressive because they're creating so many different sounds with just technique.. not much pedal usage, no tremelo arm.. etc . just using their damn hands and ears
Thanks for that Greg, was a nice thing you did. A real story about one of the greats of all time, the fans of guitarists, the players that just play always enjoy hearing a heartfelt story about the game changers of American music.
@@luvthedrake1375 Vince Gill? If you're gonna mention him then Albert Lee is there too, he's as good as Gill and then some😁 and of course roy buchanan.
The Guitar Player, Unknown Greats had Danny on the cover with a mask covering part of his face and huge bonus, the square tear out record (no auto cue!!!) with Nitpickin. It's great when you're in the horse latitudes and something comes along and pulls you right out of your doldrums and kicks you back into the game. Danny did that for me and I'm eternally grateful. If originality is a fresh pair of eyes Danny's 20/20 will light up the horizons of your playing like none other. Greg I saw you doing a Fender promo in Lynnwood Wa/Kennelly Keyes Music. Can't tell you how cool it was to be sitting next to the 16 yro kid that won the Baja Tele, I thought he was gonna pop. I had the same number minus one. I already had guitars but I saw by his Mom's face this was a golden moment. SIDENOTE: YOUR BAND WAS IN THE SLOT with Robbens old drummer and a great bass player
Just a parallel here Greg that your story brought up. Back in the day I was working in a music store in Chester for music in print in the uk and they arranged to get you to sign a Fender book for me while you were over as they knew how hot on your stuff I was. Thats still a treasured possession. Always an inspiration.

Greg , Thanks for telling the Danny Gatton story , most people dont know who he was , unless your a picker , and as Les Paul said , He ws the best headhunter that ever was , what he loved is what killed him , The music industry tried to put him into a category and you couldnt put Danny into a cat , He was awsome on everything , Thanks
My dad was a Mercedes - Benz mechanic in Bethesda , MD in the 1970's and was good friends with Danny Gatton. He played some les paul licks as well as banjoesque and pedal steel emulation. Hard worker as is Gregory and Professors of music and guitar technology.
In their early adventures in music Danny Gatton and Jack Cassidy (Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna) were in a wedding band together playing Louis Prima Songs . Had the opportunity to put together a night of Danny, his band, Jack and Jorma doing Prima songs once again for a night in a small venue in NYC -- late 1980s.. Lot's of fun

A quick Danny Gatton story, I never met him, but a friend was taken bass lessons from Danny Gatton in MD. So this was always a topic of conversation for us, and basically I would ask him about Danny Gatton. One night, we were talking and he said, "You know there was this kid that would come by and man this kid was young like under ten years old and was a demon on the guitar. For the life of me I cannot remember his name, but it had a lot of vowels in it. When you see it or it that name you would know who I am talking about."
