- • Danny Gatton & Buddy E...
Rare video of the Dec 31, 1978 recording of Redneck Jazz Explosion at the Cellar Door in Washington, DC. Buddy Emmons on steel guitar. Gatton's interpretation of Rimsky-Korsakov's opera classic.
I was lucky enough to be at this performance at the Cellar Door. Great show and I miss Danny & Buddy...RIP
Ed Ortiz Yeah, I was there too. Not this night, but the night before. Or maybe it was the night after; its been awhile. I was so happy when this stuff was released on CD many years later.
+Neal Montgomery Hi Neal, Are you saying that these sessions at the Cellar Door have been released on cd? I have one of Danny's Redneck Jazz cds but this isn't on it. I'm a guitar player in St. Louis and work often with my friend Tommy Brooks who is a tremendous steel player. We have opened for Buddy in the past here in STL and mourn his loss. We woodshed weekly on jazz standards. Such a small market for it here. Would love to find those sessions,so I'll scour Amazon for them. Are they released by Danny's family or under another title?
+Ken Newton Nevermind Neal ,Just found it. I'll be damned.
Neal, I also have the CD and both versions are from the same show. It seems they played 2 sets that night and the alternate set with Danny's intros of the band are on the CD. While as you say, they are very close, I prefer this version here. Sadly, here you can see the lifestyle choice that Buddy made (tobacco) that ultimately cost him years off his life. With Danny, we will never know...I am so grateful we will always have their incredible music.
BEFORE OR AFTER ? I DON'T REMEMBER SEEING YOU BEFORE OR AFTER OR THIS NIGHT EITHER. FUNNY HOW PEOPLE SAY THEY WERE THERE BUT CANT REMEMBER BEFORE OR AFTER ,BUT CAN REMEMBER NOT THIS TIME. YOUR AN TRUE ICOM WE WON'T FORGET BULL SHIT STINKS.
I've literally listened to this song on the CD hundreds of times. One of my favorite all time guitar recordings. Danny and Buddy and this band were simply magic.
Me too. When I first heard this tune on the radio, not knowing it had been released on a record, I flipped out! Bought the album that night and wore it out. Its still on rotation at my house.
Just stumbled upon this - incredible. And Steve Wolf is killin on bass. What kind of socery is this indeed.
Tremendous bass playing.
@@vestibulate Gotta be pretty good to keep up with Buddy and Danny
All I can say is.... Danny and buddy had devine musical communication between the two... mesmerizing...all I have.
yeah man they are so good together, they bring out the best in each other and you see the joy that have at finding someone who matches the other's talent and skill. It just doesn't get any better than this.
The bass player and drummer are no slouches either.
Never ever take this down, its marvelous
That rhythm section....perfect for these 2 giants.
Just discovered this amazing footage, my thanks is beyond words for it's posting.
This combination happens once in a lifetime! Priceless...........
Danny was influenced by the 40's Big Band recording of Song of India by Tommy Dorsey. I grew up with that and still have the 78 somewhere. Great cover of the song. Nobody could ever keep up with Danny Gatton OR Buddy Emmons except Buddy Emmons & Danny Gatton! :)
The last time I was Blessed to experience the wonder that was Danny Gatton ( little knowing-- that would be the last time ) -- was at the West Springfield club JAXX.
I was by myself, down in front, on a night the joint was not crowed.
Of course Danny played slide with a partially filled bottle of Heinekens beer sloshing out ~ but later a girl from the audience handed Danny a long stemmed Red Rose ~ which incredibly and beautifully-- Danny ( like a magician ) made Sweet music with on the fretboard. RUBY RED ROSE PEDALS FLYING EVERY WHICH WAY. JUST AMAZING. ( I wish now, I would have scooped up and preserved those pedals )
In the course of that evening, 10 feet away, not knowing that such an understated ~ totally unique ~ TALENT ~ WOULD SOON HEARTBREAKINGLY PASS FROM THIS REALM ~ I felt tingly rivulets
Of hot tears streaming down my flushed cheeks ( flushed and tearful, not from beer ) but from being in the overwhelming presence of MISTER DANNY GATTON ~ A TRUE GRAND MASTER .
True masters of their instruments, wasn't at the show that night but saw Danny and Roy Buchanan at another little joint,Gallagers I think it was called. It was something really special and I needed to see that, had lost my wife to stupidity and divorce in 1988 so yeah they lifted my spirits. I swear Danny Gatton might have been the best damn electric guitar player on the planet, just majical how he could wring notes out of that old Tele. R.I.P Danny, miss you brother.Gods band kicks butt, has to !
This music weaves a spell of a dreamlike quality performed by men who exercise a complete, understated authority.
Heellouuu! Excellent!!...Nikolai Rymski Korsakov
The Unmistakable Sound of Big E. The Master
Thanks for sharing this. RIP Danny
so glad someone was smart enough to capture this... i just love how close the lines are from danny and buddy.. hard to tell at times if its guitar or steel.. i love how danny plays the dual note wes stuff .. his right hand technique is different than how wes did it etc.. its like wes Montgomery chicken pickin.. steve wolf locked down a great groove.. also loved buddies percussion on the steel.. true innovation.. just great.. so much to learn from one song.. you really need to listen to it many times to hear it all!! ty for upload
My gosh!!! Insane groove and improvisation! Master Class!!!
When Danny played with buddy Emmons Danny was at his best which was scary! The two played off each other Danny never fails to amaze me in his guitar prowess he makes it look so easy of course that’s not the case Danny was a genius period and the worlds most underrated guitarist and rolling stone didn’t even mention Danny what a shame I think the problem with Danny was he was just too good he played so many different styles had so many different techniques his hybrid right hand could pull off so many different sounds and hi fret playing was total mastery the man was untouchable on guitar then and now no one comes close of course that’s just an opinion!
Yes, Danny was way over the head of almost everyone, even many musicians."
Very good session musicians called Danny "The Humbler"
I'm from DC and got to see Danny as often as he played within driving distance, but this was a couple years before my time. I remember Danny and the Fat boys reunion? show at the Gentry on 8th street se DC with Evan johns on guitar and organ. Billy Hancock Dave Elliott ....good times ccx zzz
I'd have to say that Danny had maybe one equal on the guitbox and that was his good friend Roy Buchanan.I have seen both of them separately and I can say that they were both tortured geniuses in life but onstage they were just magical geniuses musically.
This one blows me away..been playing a long time.i usually can figure out anything including him...but have to admit defeat here..thank you Danny for once again serving up a slice of humble pie to all of us who think they can play a little bit.
I got the CD Years ago and spoke to Danny's mother. It is always cued up. So out of all the music I have played professionally of all genre's, listened to, many many years, I always come back to this recording made in 1978. It is truly inspirational. Kind of like the hokey pokey, "...and that's what it's all about!"
That Bass player is laying a wonderful groove down for that nice disco sounding beat..
This could be the most focused and well structured solo Danny ever played for mine, consistently brilliant and great melodic flow whereas a lot of his others, though having genius moments, lack the overall structure and melodic flow of this one. many thumbs up.
I walked into Record Rendezvous in Kennebunk ME, and the live album was playing. I said "Hey, is this Buddy Emmons?" and the fellow that owned the place said "Nope, Danny Gatton." I ended up buying the CD. This is still my favorite album. Not sure what's in print now, as there was a fight between the mom and wife, or some such, but I grabbed I guess the first incarnation of the live album. This version of Song of India is growing on my though...
These guys are just killing it. The black and white recording just adds to the ambience, like some dark room where these incredible musicians are just jamming out. I was only 9 at the time. Which I could have gone back in time and watched this live.
Steve Goodman wrote a song along those lines: Life on Videotape...performed it at Austin City Limits ...
Great performance of great music on everyone's part!
Awesome stuff...another one of those nights I wish I could have seen and heard live
Everything Danny did was just masterful. I was buying Cds through BMG and Columbia House in the early to mid 90's and saw Cruisin' Deuces in the small magazine that they'd send out with every order and I liked the picture of Danny and the hot rod so I put it on the next order form. When it arrived I put it in my player and expected a great song or two and was immediately blown away by everything on the album and took it to work and turned it over to my friend and co-worker John Meeker who had hand built his own telecaster. He borrowed it over the weekend and on Monday he returned it and I said What do you think of Danny Gatton ? He answered He is killer good and somewhere Danny is leading an all star cast of great players. I sure would like to have seen him Live. What a memorable show that would have been.I have since dug up everything I could find with Danny Gatton on it and I'll always listen to this one of a kind Master. RIP ol' Buddy
God bless groovy 10 minute long jams.
outstanding band just love Danny's guitar work. Thanks for the post.
why have I never heard of this. So nice!!
Surprisingly good recording
It's as if the four of them got together, cracked themselves open... and this is what came out. Amazing!
Thanks for posting this!! I may have been at this show- I saw them twice in that era. Man- this is just some of the best music ever played, IMHO. I love the percussive stuff Emmons is doing toward the end. And of course, everything else he does...I think he was playing through an MXR phase 90.
Incredible solos! They set the bar really high!
As a country guitar player from the DC area in the early 80's, I was influenced by Gatton.
To my ears, his tone and performance here are the best I've ever heard. Awesome arrangement as well.
do you mean that you couldn't NOT be influenced by danny?...what you wrote doesn't make sense...
Legend
It's easy to get lost in this, I love it
This is magnificent !
I agree this is so great music,c6e9. The best instrumental tune I have ever heard.
So far, the best musician I hear is that incredible bass player.
Of course Mr. Gatton is brilliant in his skill, virtuosity and incredible guitar tone.
Steve Wolf bass
Steve Wolf, bass
Is there more video of these guys..Danny and Buddy..two of the greatestt at their crafts...............
This take is not the one from the CD but it is truly awesome as well!!!
For me personally, this was the best band that ever was period.
Neal Montgomery For the style of music I agree. Of course I may be partial because I knew the guys.
That bass solo though! I could have sworn that was Jaco Pastorius playing. Great stuff!
Danny Gatton the king flawless this band was one of the best ever ...steve wolf killin on bass too.
Just heard of the guy yesterday hell yeah
Just got into this dude yesterday wow....tele nirvana
This is one of my top 3 DG jams ever. I play this before bed a couple days a week. My man...
First phrase identical to "Aquarela do Brasil": "oh...abre a cortina do passado..."
Astonishing Gatton
This right here- that’s the stuff alright!

THANKS FOR YOU MÚSIC 🥲
HELL YEAH BROTHE
Seriously who gives this a thumbs down
fantastic and sad
Does anyone know where I can find a transcription of this song in the style of Dannys playing, I have figured out most of the structure but am missing some parts here and there, I keep listening and trying to figure out what he is doing like that B7 lick/run. Such a great tune...
I always liked this tune - but I were never aware that it was Rimsky-Korsakov. Maybe He wouldn´t recognize it either.
Rhythm section! OMG
Country jazz classical.Awesome
Buddy's percussion work at 09:31...... ✨💯
I think these fellas may have practicing.
Killer pickin' by all!
Love it ...but there is 'haunting' that Rimsky had in his original score that is not captured..or was it even meant to be? Love Danny..that's why I play one of his tele's
Please tell me that amazing bass player is. Does anyone know?
The bass player is Steve Wolf.
2:40 - 2:45
What kind of sorcery is this
+Bobby Weir Serious!
haha the whole set im sure
Danny was so overlooked for his nasty as hell rhythm ability
Smoookin!
whew!
This is just amazing !! Thanks for sharing. Did they ever do a studio version ?
I play this song with a band, and if the drum beats not right it almost doesn't work. I wish Somebody could explain to a lot of drummers, and guitar players the importance of having the right beat for the bass it's just really stupid how they don't understand
Partly because most players don't understand rhythm and the need to keep as close to perfect tempo as possible. I always practice with a metronome....
Bass was like a tribute to Jaco , awesome .
Who gave this a thumbs down???..
Rapper?
bello il nome del canale
Who is that bass player... a great student of Jaco at such an early date
Danny plays the Les Paul with coupled effects, he won the own!
Dinart Garcia Danny made his own effects box. It was mounted on the guitar. He called it the "magic dingus box" . Patterned in part after Les Paul's famous device he called the "Les Paulverizer". Danny was a genius innovator and inventor as well.
I take it he's using his Magic Dingus Box on the Les Paul?
country jazz samba! benson type
!
Anyone have any ideas what effects Buddy is using?
I found out he was using a MXR Envelope Filter.
lou frank It's a phase shifter for sure. MXR phase 90 perhaps.
Likely a Phase90
Who is on bass and drums? Great bass solo in the middle!
no show, just playing their asses off.awsome band .who is the bass player?
man who's the bass player
Steve Wolf on bass, Scott Taylor on drums.
Thanks. I knew it was Steve Wolf, unmistakable. But didn't know Scott Taylor was on drums. Very cool.
Is that John Kahn on bass?
Steve Wolf
:)
2 Jonas Brothers fans disapprove.
The only good "jam" band to have ever existed
Hmmm....check out the Allan Brothers Mountain Jam live...
Gibsons are better... slash for life
