- Danny Gatton
Holiday Inn
Arlington, Virginia
September 27, 1987
As you can see it is indeed a Holiday Inn.
The Band:
Danny Gatton - Gibson ES-295
John Previti - Bass
Barry Hart - Drums
Chris Battistone - Trumpet
Apologies to the trumpet player.
I have more of this if anyone is interested.
My favorite guitar player, that ever lived. Period.
A Holiday Inn lobby gig?!?....the most extravagant icing on any musical cake, to date. Period
Not even his niche...unbelievable. It it wasn't filmed, I won't believe it...yet I totally believe he would have MURDERED it.
And here it is....
That is a Master Guitar player, a player that can communicate with the other Musicians using everything he was born with. Eyes, head, feet, etc. Thanks for posting.
Possibly the finest guitarist to ever walk on Earth. He was a musical encyclopedia. I don't think there was ever a guitarist before or after him that had more ability to cover so many styles as he did, and so effortlessly.
Johnny Hiland, a man who counts Danny amongst his chief influences, is an up-and-comer to watch. Steve Vai, no less, who owns his label - says he is the complete package as a player and can "play anything." That's not hype... the guy is an absolute monster on guitar. And he can sing, too.
@@GeorgiaBoy1961 Could not agree more about Johnny Hiland. He's a fun entertainer too. Really engages his audience. Total package.
@@guppybill - Hey, I still miss Danny, but he's gone and nothing can bring him back. Why not appreciate an amazing talent like Johnny Hiland? Doing so takes nothing away from Danny's legacy, heck - maybe it even adds to it, given the influence DG had on Johnny's playing and style. I just think the world of Johnny; he's not only a monster of a player, but a great person, too. Fun to be around.
@@GeorgiaBoy1961 I totally agree. Really dig Johnny. I should have phrased it differently.
I would agree with that statement. And I know we shouldn’t compare guitarists but he was Head and shoulders above anyone else including the likes of Steve Vai an Joe Satriani
Danny Gattons playing brings tears to my eyes.Any guitar player who thinks they've "Got it" needs to check Out Danny Gatton.
The humbler! Danny is the man!
I'll second that, gladly.
@@xtc1957 I'll third it!!!

Travis,...this is so nail on head! No disrespect to SRV but an interviewer told him once that he was the best guitar player in the world,..and Stevie didn't bat an eye. I thought to myself,.."you ain't never heard Danny son." For Danny playing guitar came as natural and easy as breathing! His kind of genius will not be seen again,....ever!
Best guitarist ever (jazz, country, RnR, Blues, etc.)
Man this guy could play anything and in any style- greatly missed
Effortless . He is still my favorite . Along with Shawn Lane . Both gone now but Immortalized here on You Tube .
There's something in the relaxed but focused look in danny's eyes when he played that tells us we are observing a genius at work...he had the universe in his hands!
Those hands.
You could just see the genius stirring in Danny's eyes...there will never be another one like him... ever..😏😏
This guys playing gives me the chills. His playing is from another world.
Just another video that tells me that this guy was the best guitarist in my lifetime. Things should have gone differently for him.
Danny could take that ES 295 and go from rockabilly to jazz or whatever he wanted. It's so true, he could play anybody's music but nobody could play like him. Rest in peace Danny, we'll always miss you but will never forget you.
Danny was such an unbelievable talent. There are genuinely so few that are or were so naturally gifted in all facets of music.
Danny Gatton in a very inspired day!
A true guitar lesson.
I have not words to appreciate that video enought. Danny is beyond words, he was at the same level as wes motgomery, tal farlow, hank garland, or whoever one could think of. God bless Danny Gatton.
I think I have watched every Danny Gatton video at least 3 times and I firmly believe he was something we will never see again... a human juke box... name a song and he could play it with more feeling and versatility than anyone else... in my book the best bar none!
"....a human juke box......." Spot ON. A better definition would be impossible to coin for DG's terrifying gift.
its hard 2 take, watching dan play so much knowledge.thank god for these u tube clips there's always something nu 2 learn
This video is an absolute national treasure, as is Danny's music!
I wondered, "why do they call him the Humbler?" The last hour on RUclips has been an extremely humbling experience. Thank you Josh Smith for finally getting me to listen to this guy. Johnny Hiland comes close. And is humbled. As we all are. Freaking wow!
Nice one.Never seen this 'til now. The Humbler strikes again !
Gatton is a master!! The mastery of his instrument and the connection he has with it is a bond very few people ever get to experience!
thanks for posting these. always love hearing danny play some straight forward jazz.
This guy could play any styles of music with class
yeah, you can tell he is feeling the groove. just look at him looking at his fretboard.. like a baby deer in the head lights of a car.. something was clicking in his ol skull. well he always was clicking but you get my meaning. something about this clip just makes you forget his tragic end, and how he loved music. which we forget sometimes because of his natural talent. and how he could entertain a audience. very special clip here. thx for sharing.
He's still untouchable🎶
Impossibly great! The Humbler indeed.
Man, he's channeling Wes on this.
Just killer.
Thanks for posting.
His instructional DVDS are a wealth of information they helped me a lot.
Whoa, I can hear so much Wes in his playing now. He's one of my favorite tele players.
If you hear Wes Montgomery in Danny's playing, you're tone-deaf. On his best day, Danny wasn't man-enough to carry Wes' guitar case and amp.
Oh , he was man enough!!!!@
So glad to see some of this footage that exists of Danny. Keep it coming!
I have a few of his albums CRUISIN DUECES being my favorite. He was a GREAT guitar player. Had all this talent and wasn't recognized for his playing. Yeah his name may have been spoken here and there but didn't reach national fame like Steve Vai, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Hendrix, Satriani, Eddie Van Halen, Rhoades, Reb Beach, and the list goes on. At the age of 49 took his own life. Such a tragic loss. I was in my 20's when I saw his CD the one I mentioned. After that I picked up a few more. Did a collab with Joey Defrancesco. What a great album! I think DG was choppin at the bit to get noticed to get his name up in lights. I think he always got passed up for another. So sad of a loss.
I had already bought tickets to see Danny play on the Cruisin' Deuces tour, but he canceled the tour, saying " I'm too damn old to be away from my family for months on the road". A few months later he was dead. We shan't see his likes again, but this should serve to remind us that we have other great players who are aging and might not be with us that much longer, and we should appreciate them and go see them play whenever we can. People like Richard Thompson, David Lindley, Ry Cooder, Steve Morse and Sonny Landreth, just to name a few of my favorites; no, they're not Danny Gatton, but these guys have their own unique thing going on as well. PS, my favorite Gatton record is "88 Elmira St."
Fantastic gem of a video! Thank you for posting.
I love this video, Can't stop playing it, And Danny Gatton is Perfection ! Only wish there was more ot it, Great upload :)
I'd love to see more from this gig. It's different from any other Danny I've seen here, plus it has the only images of a beardless John Previti I've ever seen. Wonderful!
Danny had no formal training at all. His dad played big band rhythm style, but Danny couldn't read a note, but by the time he was in his teens he was thought to be one of the very hottest guitar players in DC. I first heard of Danny in '1970 when I was playing in DC for a few weeks. The players who told me about Danny were playing in Roy Buchanan band.
You know when the guys playing in Roy's band tell you about Danny this m*********** better be pretty damn good! He was and will always be godless this man
Absolutely wonderful
Danny Gatton didn't know what to do with the world, once it was offered to him. I think he didn't want it. So the world didn't know what to do with him. I think that's one of the reasons why he left.
More likely, the reason he "left" was due to overwhelming medical problems that had no obvious cure.
Danny was amazing. God please rest his Soul. R.I.P.
Exquisite guitar playing. And boy doesn't it look easy! My violinist partner recently took up guitar and is astonished at how impossibly difficult it is. And she's only trying to play a few easy pieces. Thanks for this gem.
Wes Montgomery - who would be my pick as the finest jazz guitarist of all time, bar none - was once asked in an interview about his practice habits. Wes cracked that every once in a while, he'd "open his guitar case and throw some meat in there." A humorous reference to what a monster the instrument actually is and how challenging it is to play it well, let alone at the level of a virtuoso.
r.i.p. danny forever gatton .....may your spirit creates many talents
what a great video, Gatton has the chops for just about any type of music...thanks for posting
He makes me cry...he was so sweet...God Bless him...
Note how Danny Gatton navigates the fretboard without need to look down at it. playing on knowledge and feel alone.
I saw that too
He should be playing at Carnegie Hall not the freakin' Holiday Inn.
The Carnegie Holiday Inn
That was Danny though. He was the greatest guitarist nobody ever heard of, and he didn't care. He wasn't too high and mighty to turn down a gig even at the Holiday Inn. Gatton is sort of my idol. Doesn't help that he's gone... Ironically, here I am in Arlington right next to where this was recorded over 30 years ago...
@@lashlarue7924 many a Sunday did I inhale my eggs Benedict and marvel that I was in the presence of the greatest guitar player I've ever heard playing g right in front of me in the garbage venue
Uncompromising artists are admirable in their own way, without question - but they sometimes limit themselves by being unwilling to bend a bit in their careers to take that next step. Once become a major star and have the clout that it brings, you can then do some of things Danny wanted to do all of the time. Danny wouldn't look at the music world through an A&R or producer's eyes, a label owner's eyes - the guys that are charged with producing and selling music to the fans - and that cost him the chance to grow his recognition and name. Not saying what he did was wrong, only that Danny should have known how the game was played when he stepped into the ring. Guys who play Carnegie Hall learn how the game is played, and they play it. Danny wouldn't do it. He'd rather work on old cars or do some welding or something, than play something he didn't believe in. I admire the heck out of Danny Gatton. His integrity, his refusal to compromise his principles.... just saying that kind of stance has career costs. And he paid them.
I mainly play drums, even that his guitaring is totally astounding to me. Never heard a feeling and a taste like this in somebody.
Awesome,this man could play anything!!!
Great! Yes indeed man please post the entire song!
I'd be in hog heaven seeing Danny in a little joint like that.
Rip Danny, Your memory is well preserved.
Could you please post more of this? It is excellent camera angle for learning.
Thank you for posting this.
Ah crap! Here I go again ..... down the Danny Gatton RUclips rabbit hole. Good grief.

This is the cream of the crop. Thank you for posting this rare footage!

Wow - and there was me thinking DG was just an amazing Tele player...
Man, so good…
Total badass! Gone too soon.. RIP brother
He makes me to want me to burn my guitars. He's so incredible
Oh yes - and of the highest order.
This man should have been packing concert halls, not Holiday Inns. Unbelievable talent on guitar, a total one-off.
GREAT SCOTT !
Danny...... man!
Very Top Guitarist
Awesome :)
Amazing.
Great player.
I'll be interested to see the whole concert ...
Holy Moly
What a guitar player
wow i did not know danny gatton played jazz like this! i bet he got inspired by wes doing this
sublime !
Holy Mother of All Things Guitar! Pls. anybody post more of Gatton playing jazz - something besides rockabilly. . . .
Do you have his album (CD) entitled "New York Stories"? It is Danny in session with a bunch of straight-ahead jazz cats. It's a very nice album and sort of a departure for Danny, too, as he usually didn't run in those circles.
Wow!
As far as I know, Danny is the only guitarist to mix in some 12th's with his octave passages; i.e.@ 2:27, 3:43. It sounds great and it's so natural to the guitar, I don't know why other players haven't explored that. I also love the way he mixes in a few country/blues sounds into
his jazz lines.
The guitar, tuned in the normal manner, has a lot of fourths on it in easy reach. That's one reason why guitar-based or guitar-centric musical styles like country music have a lot of fourths in their songs. The prevalence of pentatonic scales adds to this as well. Danny playing twelfths is simply another way of playing fourths, but a fourth with an octave underneath. In the straight-ahead jazz world, fourths are found mostly in modal tunes, and of course some players use them in their solos and improvisations. Mainly, though, the straight-ahead jazz cats don't emphasize fourth intervals in their playing as much as rock, blues and country players do. Danny - being Danny - could get away with doing things that most folks can't do and still have it make sense musically. Mark of a real master - you know it is him within hearing a few notes.
que maravilla!!!!
Genius!
wow 😍
Great post.. I thought I'd seen all the Gatton video. Where did this come from.
Again thanks for putting this up.. He makes it look SO easy.
If interested? Post it ALL Please!
Thanx so much!!!
GOAT
Awww Danny..smh..❤
wondered whether Danny had ever played with Lenny Breau..would have been something to behold.) RIP DG
pedro antonio there is a bootleg ot there with buddy Emmons dmdanny gatton and lenny Breaux live it's at a place exalted the cellar door I think.. I have the bootleg...so so sound quality mind blowing playing especially buddy emmons..
Officially a god in my book
One night at a Holiday Inn in Logansport, IN, I met one of the original Jordanaires, Carl, I think he said his name was. He'd been in Peru, IN, a few miles down the pike, visiting Vern Gosdin, who lived there at the time. Man, did he ever have some stories, including why you should never play poker with Scotty Moore, who played guitar for Elvis. All of which is apropos of nuthin', except you never know who you'll meet in the lounge at a Holiday Inn.
Vern Gosdin - now there's a real country singer for you! In his prime, that guy was great - wish he was still with us.
Six dislikes, unbelievable. I can't believe anyone would go to the bother of clicking the thumb down...if you don't like it just move on. Danny probably forgot more than you six will ever hope to know, combined. Nerfnarf, thanks kindly for sharing.
He and Clayton Delaney. The greats. Clarence White, too. Tony Rice. Doc Watson. Elmo Brown.
They guy could play any style as if that was his only.
I think there are so few view of this video because guitar players are afraid to watch him..... I know I am 😎RIP Mr. Humbler.
top man
awfully beautiful voice lines))))
