He was my grandfather's best friend, he was a kind, respected man with a great sense of humor, I may have never got the chance to meet him, but I knew I would appreciate him, if I could meet him... My Grandfather's last words, were "I will be with Danny Again", please respect his talent, and don't hate...
He has been one if my heros for a long time. We try to keep his music and greatness alive in my band. 30 yrs been trying to be danny!. He was very nice, got to meet he and the band many times. It was one of the hardests moments in my life when i heard he passed. Missed and adored so much.
I was gifted a trip to Austin by my late uncle and he took me to see the filming of Austin City Limits. I was disappointed at first because I was hoping someone I’d heard of was taping a show. That soon changed the second Danny started playing and I’ve never been the same since. I got home and bought every single tape, CD, and record of his I could get my hands on and I’ve been a lifelong fan ever since.
The first time I saw Danny was the Flood Zone in Richmond, Va arount 1991. My jaw about hit the flloor!! Every long hang heavy metal player was there from the area and we were all floored at what we were watching. I saw him about another 4 - 5 times in the next 3 years. He was and is still the best I have ever seen! He could play any style better than anyone.
Danny was a DC legend as was Roy. I played drums on Roy's final California tour in the Spring of the year he died, 1988. However, I used to see Danny on Tuesday nights at the Childe Harold at DuPont Circle with Emmy Lou Harris and with his own band Danny & the Fat Boys. They were always great and I will always have fond memories experiencing both of them in such intimate situations. They were all about the music....and the beer.
Danny was definitely touched by the hand of God! Some Guitarist are like Lion Tamers, Workin searching for that certain Sound! Hendrix, Others the Guitar is like an extension of their arm like Gatton
man...i listen to a great deal of music, lots of styles...see a lot of shows...seen a lot of greats, world famous and unknown...but i'm straight embarrassed to admit i've never heard of Danny Gatton before today. like stumbling over a big lump of gold. dude was incredible, and the band is money. RESPECT
He wouldn't fly on airplanes so his sphere of influence was primarily around DC, Maryland and Virginia areas. He may have been the best guitarist in history. He wasn't nearly as famous as he should have been, but I guarantee every guitar great knew his name. Steve Vai called him the best he had ever seen.
NO DOUBT!!! I love EVERY thang I've seen him in!!! The BEST Musicians are NEVER lauded by the Public... I was a BIG HENDRIX fan when I was coming up but MAN ... People like Bill, Danny, Red , Albert Lee,The Whole "Wrecking Crew" and "Muscle Shoals" guys made R&B and Country, and POP!!! What about Mickey Raphael with Willie??? People like 'Li'L Wayne anbd his "throes" will NEVER understand!!!
The similarities between Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan are eerie. Both possessed fearsome talent. Both lived in the Washington DC area. Both were known for playing Telecasters (in fact they both owned the same Tele at different times). Both had eclectic styles and could play virtually any style of music. Both were fiercely independent. Neither, despite being massively gifted musicians, ever gained widespread fame. And both died -- at their own hands -- just shy of 50. Depression is a monster that robs us all, either personally or by taking some of the best among us.
+ericynot You are so right. Joe Bonomassa was a protégé and talks about him once in a while and knows why he did it but never gets into it because it's really none of our business. Totally personal stuff. Been there!! Depression so sucks!! I'm so glad it's been gone for a long long time.
I've known some great players here in Nashville who have devoted so much time to doing that very thing because they are tremendous fans, and they, just like me would agree 100%.with that statement.
just such a shame he has only 220,000 views and 2,100 likes. Danny was the man. I saw him in concert many times in the DC area. He was exhausting to watch.
I've seen a great many things done by a great many guitar players, but until this performance I had never seen a guitarist play with a towel over his hand and still make it musical. Phenomenal. Rest in peace, Danny Gatton.
I lived in the DC area for 20 year during Danny's reign of terror on mere mortal guitarists (like me) but I never saw him live. I know I was working 60 hours a week, but I should have stopped and smelled the roses. Regrets, I have a few. Color me Humbled!
cant believe its 22 years since he died . Got to see him live four times in small clubs in philly area, in 92 and 93. what a joy to watch. Not ashamed to say I cried the day I read he took his life, October 4th 1994, a dark day in my life, couldn't listen to his music for almost a year, but its great to see his music kept alive and new people discovering a truly great guitarist
At around 10:00 : Danny's smile to the bassist after this one ended his stunning solo: great. He's a great guitarist, and he is happy, when others do outstanding solos, too. I like that.

Danny is in very rare air as one of the most exceptional guitarists to come along in the past 75 years. And, what a great sax/trumpet/keyboard player Bill Holloman is!!!
As long as I live, I will never forget hearing Danny Gatton's playing for the first time. I was in graduate school in Illinois and had just gotten the "Guitar Player" magazine issue featuring the greatest 'unknown guitarists," and Danny was on the cover and on their 'sound page' recording inside. "Nit Pickin'" was the tune, one of Danny's showcase numbers, and it just blew me away. Later saw DG several times live, and regard those shows are highlights of my musical life. Especially because of how soon he would be gone. This video, just wow - the guy cooly downs a beer and while the bottle is still dripping suds, plays the heck out of it on his Tele on a slide guitar number. What an amazing talent, but just as important - what a total goof! I miss Danny and his humorous approach to life. RIP, DG.... you won't be forgotten. Wish we'd had a chance to share a beer or two. I'd even have paid!
@@georgedavis8412 his work with Buddy Emmons in Redneck Jazz Explosion was that way. Buddy was one of the few who could hang with Danny, and even push him to greater heights.
Like BluesBorn said below, Danny could do things on the guitar that are simply put, unbelievable. Just that hybred picking alone is near impossible. I've been playing a long time and still can't get the hang of it. RIP Danny, like most of the greats he went too soon, but he did leave us a treasure trove to go rummaging through.
Same response from the guitar faculty at Berklee School of Music when he played in Boston. I grew up in D.C. and couldn't afford the cover at the clubs back then but Danny told them I could stay until he finished his sound check. It was great just to listen to him warm up!

I grew up outside of DC and was fortunate enough to see Danny on a handful of occasions. I had moved to FL when this aired but I remember feeling like "now you all have some idea!" He was The Telemaster!!!
Bill Holloman, sax player here is still wailing in 2019. saw him just a few weeks ago. incredible musician. and he's still playing that same filthy sax.
That sax isn't "filthy", it's oxidized. Most pro players have their brass instruments acid-dipped regularly to remove the oxidation, and restore the bright finish. However, some purists, especially those with vintage instruments, refuse to have them dipped because some of the metal is removed in the process, potentially altering the tone. My late brother-in-law, Al Seibert, was a pro tenor sax player from the Washington DC area. He played a horn that at the time he passed, was about 75 years old. He absolutely refused to have it dipped, and I'd have to say it was the richest-sounding tenor sax I've ever heard. I'd venture to say Bill feels the same way about his horn.
There is a sect of guitar players who favor a black guard tele and fender bf/sf amp, namely the deluxe reverb. They play the same type of music and have contributed to the evolution of the guitar world. Danny is a prime example; I love this sect and have patterned my self after it. I have a pair of 71 Fenders, a deluxe reverb and a thinline tele. The tele has a joe bardon in the neck and a custom broadcaster in the bridge with a hollow mahogany body ,the amp has rca tubes and a texas texas heat speaker, the reverb and tremolo work on both channels. This rig with a small pedal board of 6 pedals can do anything. I am a fan of Danny and others like him.
i saw him once in a small club in Silver Spring Maryland. It was like watching Da Vinci paint, Shakespeare write or Babe Ruth play baseball. You knew you were in the presence of greatness and it never be equaled .
We all have our favorites, and I have mine. Everything you've ever heard about Danny is true... So, like I was saying, we all have our favorites and Danny is one of mine. If he isn't one of your favorites... well... um... you're just wrong.
Around this show that was filmed in Austin he came to Houston. I snuck out of my house. I got in my family station wagon and drove to see that show amazing he is the humbler.
Our band warmed up for Liz Meyer and friends with Danny once in OC MD winter of 72 or 1973.. We had 100 watt Marshall stacks. He was using a 410 "59 Fender Bassman. He comes up to me and states proudly that his Tele and 410 was louder than my Marshall.I didn't argue. He may have been right with a Tele on the treble pickup full volume.
There are no words to describe a live Danny Gatton performance. He could do it all and when you left for home you were changed. This was a giant talent and we are still grieving over what might have become of him and his awesome playing skill. At least there are cd and dvd performances to pass along to future generations. The other great gift he left us are Joe Barden pickups which would not exist without Dannys' input.
I'm not entirely sure we would be able to tell what he would have become. Once you reach his level, I'm not sure he or anyone could have been any better. If you consider how long the guitar has been around and nobody has come to within the same zip code... and to do it with 2 lessons and no practice in his lifetime, nor the ability to read music, you be the judge. And just think of the amazing musicians that he played with. We lost Buddy Emmons, the best ever at his craft.
Why is this not yet on DVD after all these years? Caught it on ACL at the time and taped it on VHS. Then I bought the "Unfinished Business" LP and become a complete fan.
My good American guitarist friend Pat Moore told me about this guy and sure did blew my mind. He not just plays the guitar but really diggin' deep into it with all his musicality and heart. Too bad he could have won lots of award's and accolades.
Wanna know just how good Danny is? Show one of these videos to someone who thinks they know music but have never heard of him. The expression on their face will tell all.
Just in the first song Danny uses a handful of techniques that I'm pretty certain he alone among the world's top guitarists had the physical ability to pull off. In the OPENING NUMBER.
sax player just kills it AND he has the very best ducks-ass hairdo of all time! what. edit) look at danny's wall of fender amps - even more better than rock guy's walls of marshall amps.
Guitar wizardry? Sure, but he never gets credit for all the great instrumental compositions. He was a great writer/arranger who took hillbilly jazz about as far as it ever went.
what a great guitarman love that beer bottle slide never saw that one before probably a good neck cleaner i ll aways miss danny please people dont do yourself in seek help
wow this guy still shreds 90 percent of all our great players now. people should give credit where credit is do. instead of saying they are the fastest
+Michael Profita I went to his concert performance at the Holiday Inn in Solomon's Island, MD back in 1980. He was the greatest guitarist back then and his legendary guitar licks are still the best today. R.I.P. Telemaster.
Danny had family in the audience to his left in the front row ie his mother Norma Rae Gatton, sister Donna and brother Brent. BTW - That's a bottle of Lone Star Beer he's using for a slide. The producers of ACL made him peel the label so it didn't come off like a commercial. :)
I came across his first album I would say....called CRUISIN DUCES. Then I came across a few more, 88 Elmira Street, UNFINISHED BUSINESS, he did an album with Joey Defrancesco, I also have double album of Danny Gatton, 4 or 5 albums total. I really enjoyed his guitar playing, having an uncle, my dad being in thier own local country and western music bands and being in foster care a Spanish family in the church playing instruments, thier sons and father playing a sax, trumpet, drums guitar and a sister who can sing. I was introduced to alot of jazz and wind instrument playing. Unfortunately I can't play an instrument to save my life. Lol.
He was my grandfather's best friend, he was a kind, respected man with a great sense of humor, I may have never got the chance to meet him, but I knew I would appreciate him, if I could meet him... Why is this not yet on DVD after all these years? Caught it on ACL at the time and taped it on VHS. Then I bought the "Unfinished Business" LP and become a complete fan.
Bill on sax, trumpet and keys amazing
Thank You very much , for the power breakfast of art!
My good American guitarist friend Pat Moore told me about this guy and sure did blew my mind. He not just plays the guitar but really diggin' deep into it with all his musicality and heart. Too bad he could have won lots of award's and accolades.
goes for the jugular right at the start... awesome
Here 'cause of Josh Smith... Grateful 🙏
Danny Gatton is the Uncle of our daughter-in-law Christie Gatton Thomasson. My husband Ron Thomasson knew him from his days in DC.
Wanna know just how good Danny is? Show one of these videos to someone who thinks they know music but have never heard of him. The expression on their face will tell all.
This was my introduction to Mr. Gatton, and I tell ya, I'm blown away.
Whoa!! John Candy on sax!!!
Just in the first song Danny uses a handful of techniques that I'm pretty certain he alone among the world's top guitarists had the physical ability to pull off. In the OPENING NUMBER.
I''ve seldom heard anything he played during which at some point he didn't do the impossible.
sax player just kills it AND he has the very best ducks-ass hairdo of all time! what.
edit) look at danny's wall of fender amps - even more better than rock guy's walls of marshall amps.
im 56 its 2023 and i haven't heard of this guy before ..thats a legit sin wtf
Me neither and I'm 69. The guy knew how to guitar!!!
Guitar wizardry? Sure, but he never gets credit for all the great instrumental compositions. He was a great writer/arranger who took hillbilly jazz about as far as it ever went.
That is some killer rockabilly on the Elvis set. Jeff Beck can do some of these tricks as well. WOW.
Hope things are better for ya now Danny. RIP.
insane, words fail to describe the genius of Danny...
Most amazing man who ever lived.
(the singer)
I saw him at the Twist and Shout in Bethesda a few times back in day--man, that guy could play.
total genius guitarist
Great Drumming by Shannon Ford

danny Gatton? amazing!
Danny is beyond brilliant here, that’s to be expected - but Bill Holloman, oh, my freaking goodness!
Unbelievably great guitarist. The sax player as well.
La prima volta che l'ho ascolto fantastico very very good
wow this guy still shreds 90 percent of all our great players now. people should give credit where credit is do. instead of saying they are the fastest
+Michael Profita I went to his concert performance at the Holiday Inn in Solomon's Island, MD back in 1980. He was the greatest guitarist back then and his legendary guitar licks are still the best today. R.I.P. Telemaster.
+Michael Profita I think he is the worlds all time greatest player that ever lived
What a tone from that old Gibson semi hollow! Danny was a monster player
All I can say is wow!
Lol.
Gearheads with Joey D was amazing!
Cruising Deuces played on repeat in our Year One marketing office.
