@gwmerr -I met Danny as well at a guitar seminar and you are right-he was a nice guy.I have never forgotten this one guy asking Danny to sign his jean jacket and handing him a magic marker.I figured he'd just quickly scribble something down but no-Danny was a perfectionist. He proceeded to take about 15 minutes to do his whole name in block lettering with 3D shadowing techniques etc. What a trip.It totally blew that guy's mind and I'm sure he treasures that jacket to this day.
I was lucky enough to get to know Danny over 4 months in 1979 when he took on some guitar students. Danny was a "down to earth " guy and his unbelievable talent never went to his head. He was called "The Humbler" but he was humble in his manner and just a good hearted soul. He really gave me the ability to break free of bounds I had accepted to the guitar and although I never excelled beyond a journeyman player I know he made a difference for me.
I SAW HIM WITH ROBERT IN BERKELEY SQUARE...but the show I met him was at THE OLD WALDORF in San Francisco. Lance Quinn and Danny Gatton trading leads...Robert was amazing too!!!....(and old friend opened the show...Ron Thompson...he rocked too)
@@georgefeist8190 I saw him in Boston which I believe was the last show of the tour. I had NO idea who he was. I went with a friend who was the singer in a rockabilly trio I was in. As good as he and the band was on the Berkeley recording, the Boston show was amazing. I'd always imagined there was some player out there doing the kind of stuff he did and finally that night I got to see it. I was about 10' from the stage looking at his Tele on the stand before the show thinking "Very cool. This might be good." Saw him two more times after that. Nobody ever got more music out of one guitar. Nobody.
I just watched 3 whole concerts of Danny and I don't know what to say!!!! Double neck Tele made for him CRAZY! Such a great person and should be respected by all musicians for his incredible talent. Why do the good die young? RIP
This may be the best RUclips clip I have seen of Danny Gatton. He is playing an Elvis medley. The guy singing is the father of the guy that sang at the Birchmere. He is playing the lick…
Danny was a wonder to behold. His style was so all encompassing that listening to him was enough to floor you. Chops and taste...tone to the bone. He left us a treasury of cd's and 2 instruction videos. Also..thanks to him we have Joe Barden pickups which give you an edge on almost anything else . Thanks Danny
Danny was just gifted, from God! He had it BIG TIME. However he was badly depressed, which led to his death. I just wish he would have gotten himself some help, so he wouldn't do that to himself and those that loved him. His guitar playing was up there amongst the greatest of all time. Who can judge? Not me! But, I'll say this, the man was gifted and brilliant, on that telecaster of his. God Bless the memory & soul of Danny Gatton. 🎶🎶🎸
@@chikkipop I remember seeing or reading an interview with one of his long-time bandmates who said that he suspected Danny suffered from depression all the way back in the early 80's when they first started playing together. I grew up around manic-depressive people, and have a bit of it myself as it's so hereditary, and I can say that the way Danny speaks about himself and how dismissive he is of his talent is very familiar. Same speech pattern and everything. If I had to say, I'd say the guy suffered from something along those lines, but whether or not that was the sole cause of his untimely death isn't for me to speculate on. In many of his interviews, it seems as though he just wanted to be left alone to play with his cars and occasionally play music with his buddies - he didn't seem cut out to be a semi-mainstream artist and certainly didn't seem altogether that happy with the successes he had, but I could be wrong. That being said, his death (just like his friend Roy Buchanan's) has always struck me as being a little strange. But that's probably just the fan in me being in denial about how the greatest guitar player to ever walk the earth took his own life, so I'll leave it there. May God rest his soul.
Danny has been my number one guitarist ever since I first heard him play. The way he effortlessly demonstrates his technique at the beginning of this clip is my favourite bit of the whole thing. I could watch him play unaccompanied for hours - without the assistance of his pretty average band - or was it just that he was so great he made other musicians sound ordinary?
@ncbloom Early 50s with a hollow spot under the chrome cover behind the bridge. That cover is on when he was not using a remote control box for an echoplex and some other effects that had controls in a box that sat in the routed spot under the chrome cover on his usual Tele. I think it was a 53. Danny gave Roy Buchanan a 50s blond Tele.. These two also shared a room in the DC area. Imaging Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton kicking it together. Now they are both gone by their own choice. RIP guys!
the first 40 secs just blow my mind... and he dosent even look at his guitar... I love gatton, he is my 2nd favorite guitarist only to FZ, but even he couldnt do this!
I went to hear him live because some friends were going but didn't pay much attention since I don't like rockabilly. But now I realize what a great player he was. Fortunately he left some instructional videos behind!
I remember when Much Music started broadcasting Stateside in the mid 90's, the line I kept hearing was, "It's like MTV, only they play videos". In fact, I remember MM's promos emphasized the fact that they didn't air reality shows, cartoons, game shows or any of the other crap MTV had on at the time. Unfortunately, MM shut down their US feed about 10 years ago, so who knows what they show now.
Danny was more than just a magnificent guitarist he was an inspiration to work harder at our pickin. Also, thanks to him we now have Joe Barden pickups which make the tone that used to be only be a dream. Danny made the world a better place. ..lest we forget Ross Finley
That's just from the finish being worn off the fingerboard. You play any guitar enough and that will happen. You can tell which portions of the neck got used the most. It's especially noticeable with guitarists who sweat a lot. Everyone always assumed Rory Gallagher beat the hell out of his Strat, but the finish wore away because he had a rare blood type that caused his sweat to have a high acid content, plus he was one of those guys who was on the road constantly, playing 2 or 3 hours a night.
I don't suppose Leo knew Danny when he 'grew' the Tele from his lapsteel but what he did was to create the perfect instrument for the perfect guitar genius. What I wouldn't give to have seen the man in person. And like bassdrumbone64 I want that tone too.
@buckbuck666 Yeah you're right. But he was well known to guitar players and recognized by Guitar Player magazine and various awards for his playing. Truly one of the greatest players that ever picked up a guitar.
Man, what a musician this guy was. And you know what? Danny must have been pickin' during Elvis' time in the 70s. Guaranteed Elvis knew of him. Since EP's original guitarist Scotty Moore didn't want to do Vegas, Danny would have been a shoo-in. But, if Elvis knew of him (good chance he did) I bet I know why EP didn't or wouldn't have asked Danny to work the Vegas gigs...because he would have been just too...much...guitar for those shows!
Please, I don'r know how but some Gatton fan contact GitarCarl and ask him if he can get me a copy of this performance ; the complete performance. Thank you
Roy and Danny were theoretically friends, but it was kinda weird. Danny said once that Roy used to put on disguises when he went to see Danny play because Roy believed that Danny held out on his "good" licks because he thought Roy would steal them. Roy also apparently hired away a couple musicians that Danny liked playing with, apparently for the same reason, because Roy was a bit paranoid about Danny stealing his thunder or whatever.
Danny has got a lot in common with the great Django Reinhardt both were totally at one with the guitar both had the otherworldly gift of playing anything that came into their head regardless of how difficult or fast. And both were so good they lost interest in the guitar Danny would rather fix up old cars and Django took up painting
i was lucky enough to have gatton as 1 of my students, for about a decade between 73 and 83. I'm proud of him, he caught on fairly qwik. there was some stuff had to show him 3 or 4 times- but he eventually grasped it.
Danny Gatton probably forgot more than most guitar players will ever know.. absolute genius
Danny's genius was unparalleled...he was the greatest electric guitar player to ever draw breath....we all sure miss your genius Danny.....😏😏
He makes the so-called rock guitar gods look like beginners.
His warm up licks would make most guitarist humble - RIP Danny - you still inspire....
I would love to go back in time to see him live. Absolutely no words to describe how good he was.

World's best unknown guitarist is a reputation that he certainly deserved
He has to be on everyone's list of great guitarists.
Shout out to the camera man & director for some great footage of not only the band but up close Danny'!
The greatest guitar player most people never heard of. In my book he was A #1 Awesome!
Timeless, brilliant, and perfect!
I saw the Humbler in Berkeley CA. in 1978? with Robt. Gordon. That night changed my life...
I saw him in @ The Rainbow in Ottawa on that tour... it blew me away... I had never seen anything like it (and haven't since).
Damn, I wish I’d known about Danny when he was he was alive and pickin’. Mind-blowingly brilliant fretwork.
On fire man! Simply one of the finest musicains/guitarists on the planet in my humble opinion. Peace.

Thank you Danny - I just bought one of your guitars.
What a treat to see this, I never knew this video existed! Thank you gitarcarl for sharing. Danny was the greatest.
Danny was some kind of wonderful and masterful genuine guitar genius!

aaah? He had an aggressive Lou Gariegs disease not depression.
