Pride of SOUTHERN MARYLAND ! ! ! There will never be another like Danny . He gave us something so different and so good it comes along only once in a lifetime. Peace
I used to watch him play at "Blues Alley" in D.C. when I was stationed at Walter Reed in the Army. I was too young and dumb to even know who he was, but I knew I was in the presence of greatness.
Unbelievable artistry, technique, and talent. The world won't see anyone as gifted anytime soon. There was only one Danny Gatton. I like to imagine him, SRV, and Hendrix jamming together up in heaven.
ok, folks, I own approx. 5000 original cds, I have collected all the guitar greats who ever put their fingers on six or more strings - but all I can say: Danny was in a league of his own. I know, we shouldn't compare artists, because so many of them have enriched our lives - but words fail to describe the genius of Danny. Thanks for posting this gorgeous gem!!!!!
Saw him countlesstimes..still blows me away...and there were other very gifted guitarists around DC...we were spoiled...any night of the week someone great was playing a local club
I never seem to run out of new danny Gatton videos to blow me away, as far as have complete control of his instrument and also have such a huge vocabulary of licks goes there's no one near his standard, incredible
Goddamn, this Guy is a telecaster, high level genius. He literally transfers his nervous system onto that tele. And that is how a guitar is mastered people.
Abso-f***ing-lutely! I couldn't have put it better myself. I'm not going to get into the 'guitarist A is better than guitarist B' shenanigans ('cos that's for retards)... but what I will say is that there isn't another guitarist that puts a smile on my face as much as DG. Such a shame he's not around anymore, because I would have loved to see him live.
So much talent and so much going on musically with his playing. Whatever he was playing always sounded like him, it wasn't forced. He just let it rip and rolled with it. An original and sadly he isn't as well known as he should have been.
Speechless! Never saw this video before. Even a "Charlie Christian" pickup belt buckle, too cool. His playing on this video is nothing short of phenominal. RIP Danny Gatton. I was at a car show in Hershey PA years ago playing my guitar, and an old gentleman asked me if I heard of Danny Gatton. I smiled & said yes! This nice man said he was a close friend. Made my day.
I bought the telemaster DVD and was astonished at his techniques ( tips and tricks is awesome as well ). So original for me. We just don't have that calibre of guitarist here in the UK ( Scotland ). He was the greatest. Hopefully more people will post up more gems for us to study and drool over.
Love it. Many thanks for uploading ... have great memories of seeing Danny around this time at Birchmere, old 9:30 Club and many other bars, dives and moose-lodge type places. More clips from this show would be mighty welcome!
Thanks so much for posting these clips! I grew up in the Balt/DC area and was fortunate enough to see Danny a few times, as well as converse and interact with him a couple of times. In my experience, he was just as we have all read about him. Humble, funny and the most self-effacing guy you'd ever meet. Keep these clips coming and thanks so much again!
Words fail to describe the genius of Danny Gatton....but how about...."stupendous"? "Incredible"? "Mind-blowing"? Yeah, you're right, no superlatives do him justice. And he made it look too easy. As Ravi Shankar was to the sitar, so was Danny to the guitar. You sit there and watch and listen and you are transfixed....stupifying. If he was ever in a cutting contest....well, no other guitarist in their right mind would have the guts to challenge him. A true wizard of the instrument.
Great drummer! Gave Danny excellent support. Fabulous stuff from Danny - thanks for posting!! I still think he should have found a singer and made a quartet. Worked for Jimmy Page.
I saw a video here on youtube, somewhere... Danny was saying he didn't like the sound of a fresh set of strings so he would rub cigarette ash in to them to try and deaden the sound. Probably also make his neck really dirty and look more worn than it was.
worn and coated with a mixture of cigarette ashes and beer. that is the way danny deadened the strings to his liking. he hated the sound of new strings.
uleez Yup. Pork breakfast sausages, to be specific. That was his secret. They're also much greasier than human fingers. Those trotters would slide up and down the neck like.. Well, greased breakfast sausages. If you get hungry during a gig, you could always eat one or two, then just get more sewn on.
A great axe master.. I read where Danny was loaned one of Roy Buchanon's Teles and before giving it back he removed the pickup and put some shit one in its place.. That ended what had been a great relationship between the Two D.C players ..
@DaveHSVGTS imho you should definitely check out Roy Buchanan - his double-cd anthology Sweet dreams would be a nice start...incredible blues feeling, if you like Danny and SRV, you can't go wrong with Roy... A fantastic guitar album is "Psychedelic guitar circus", feat. Steve Kimock, Henry Kaiser, Freddy Roulette - very trippy, groovy, uplifting tunes... I'd also recommend Rory Gallagher's Live Irish Tour, the wonderful John Lee Hooker Mr. Lucky with great guitar playing...
I'll give you one - Joe Bonamassa. Current and started as a super gifted child prodigy like Danny Gatton did. In fact, Danny was one of Joe's mentors. He taught him during the last 4 years of his life. IMHO Joe is probably the greatest thing to happen to music in a generation.
How many people do you think have bought a telecaster so they can sound like Danny. And after trying it out. The penny drops and back in its case it go'es
There is no one that can touch Danny a cou2ple come close the great Scotty Anderson Lenny breau and Wes Montgomery come to mind but Danny was a genius my favorite player for 20 years now and Rory Gallagher and Roy Buchanan were absolute masters
Roy Buchanan also tends to become lost in guitar masturbatory avenues. Jeff is a different kind of player using strats and playing with his tremolo bar and pinching strings. Gatton is in a class by himself for pyrotechnics. I saw a fan have sonically induced seizures during Sweet Georgia Brown and Fingers on Fire!
@@commanderthorkilj.amundsen3426 really you are ignorant of Jeff's more substantial early career playing a Tele. One of his Teles became Jimmy Pages famous Tele that was even used on the Stairway solo. Roy's a wanker? WoW Danny here is being a far bigger wanker here and using an super thin trebly tone even though he is using a super resonant vintage '52? Tele with fatter humbucking pickups. Sorry just no.
@@Dream-Academy I’ve seen your idol, Jeff Beck, play live, since his Yardbird days, so you’re not enlightening anyone. He’s played Stratocasters most of his career, and prefers them (according to his interviews). Gatton and Buchanan are much more closely associated w/ bringing Telecasters to the fore, than is your hero.
The WHOLE neck is worn!!! The WHOLE damed thing!!! There just isn't a single note that guitar hasn't squeezed out!! Love it!
Yea thats crazy…
It’s impossible to name the single greatest guitar player ever, and yet his name was nonetheless Danny Gatton.

He was a master of any genre.
The search is over...you have your Guitar Champion.
I never seem to run out of new danny Gatton videos to blow me away, as far as have complete control of his instrument and also have such a huge vocabulary of licks goes there's no one near his standard, incredible
Dude was a total genius.
Dude was fucking scary.
Goddamn, this Guy is a telecaster, high level genius. He literally transfers his nervous system onto that tele. And that is how a guitar is mastered people.
Danny Gatton has been making me smile with his playing, ever since I first heard him playing Harlem Nocturne. :)
Abso-f***ing-lutely! I couldn't have put it better myself.

He was a national treasure.
Many thanks for sharing this. It's wonderful to see DG actually creating his sound.
So much talent and so much going on musically with his playing. Whatever he was playing always sounded like him, it wasn't forced. He just let it rip and rolled with it. An original and sadly he isn't as well known as he should have been.
Shut, this guy is really a killing machine........love it
Oh!Boy!Wow!The great Danny Gatton. One of the all time greats. Thanks for posting.
I am an idiot, for not learning about this guy earlier. Incredible performance
omg
Mr. Danny Gatton is the King!

I still have it on VHS tape
Wow!!!!! I am blown away..............
What a monster .....he's just killing it here ! So good .
That's what you call, "Born to Play Guitar!"
Danny's tone had the bark of a dog and the squeal of a cat!!
this is a killer!like being at the gig for myself who never saw Danny !thank you!

Thanks Robert for these posts of a Guitar Great!! RIP Danny....
Wow. He was all over that neck like cheap perfume. Really Good !!
A True Telemaster , RIP Danny !
Danny is all!Forever.
Stunning.

He kicks open so many doors of music. Big Boots!

Did no-one ever inform Danny that you can't do that with a Tele?. Glad they didn't, that was awesome playing. Wow.
What a talent, left us too early!
what is it about worn down guitars being played by those who wore them down that is so good to see ?!i love it ! wb
The boss of the boss of the boss of the master of Telecaster
at this point, every Danny Gatton Video should say "Watch and learn from the Humbler"
@joshua9312 I noticed that too. Must be those pickups. I think they might be Hot rails. Still, most of the tonage is in the Telecasters zip code.
King of the Tele's
My guitar hero!
That chord at 2.14 gets me every time!
Gigante de la tele !!!
wow wow and double wow
The Humbler in action
wow, was he great.
Imagine... Danny Gatton, John5 and Jack Pearson jamming together.
A master!
Genius!
what a Tele, imagine the pain that went in to playin that thing..Amazing
RIP DANNY
Happiness on Six Strings :)

Why is it that the good die young... and pricks live forever?
***** LOL
+Mark8395217 if your picking flowers witch ones do you want first....the most beautiful ones.
Very true, wise words indeed.
Unbelievable.
Wow!
WICKED COOL!!! ;)
worn and coated with a mixture of cigarette ashes and beer. that is the way danny deadened the strings to his liking. he hated the sound of new strings.
The Humbler....
'nuff said...
How can he play so fast with sausages for fingers !! he is the best,

Well, greased breakfast sausages. If you get hungry during a gig, you could always eat one or two, then just get more sewn on.
Short fingers have a great advantage over long ones for playing fast scale passages. Look at Joey D's hands. Same thing.

I heard that also but may not be true... sounds hard to believe particularly as Gatton when for blade hum bucking tele pickups in the end.
Yes I do.

Why do I keep hearing Roy here?
He was absolutely influenced by Roy, but was technically quite a ways beyond Roy. They were from the same area.
How many people do you think have bought a telecaster so they can sound like Danny. And after trying it out. The penny drops and back in its case it go'es
A guy from Canada named Jimmy James plays a bit like him.
Ya know when ya know
Low "F" still has a dash of color....lol
Here's one I cut together yesteday!
" Harlem Nocturne"
wow
@mink61 not light strings, powerful hands
Those hands....
NONE BETTER
when you play like Danny you don't need cigarette ashes to have a worn looking neck!
for music's sake alone.
Sounds like some Roy influence in there! Awesome stuff, genius!
Roy Buchannan. yes sir.
Roy turned him on to a fat jazz pick. Used it after that.
Two of the best.
Would like to see top metal shredder keep up with him
There is no one that can touch Danny a cou2ple come close the great Scotty Anderson Lenny breau and Wes Montgomery come to mind but Danny was a genius my favorite player for 20 years now and Rory Gallagher and Roy Buchanan were absolute masters
That poor guitar must miss being mastered like that
Not planning on making them available, sorry.
Nice change at 1:41
@MrMudclub are you forgetting nrbq
No problem, have you uploaded the entire show?
To Superguitarman69,how in The Fuck Could You not Like this dude, what do You Think You Are,Super guitar Man?.........................
are powerful hands useful in this line of work?
How can I get a copy?
Do you have the whole show?
Does he have a tremolo on there, or is it one of those "b (g) bender" things?
trailer tail volume control Pro
but its also covered in cigarette ashes
Looks like Rodney Crowell up there with him
Very very flash but I prefer Roy or Jeff Beck on a Tele :-)
Roy Buchanan also tends to become lost in guitar masturbatory avenues. Jeff is a different kind of player using strats and playing with his tremolo bar and pinching strings. 4 people have a hearing problem.
jesus fukin christ
No melody, just noise. Doesn't move me at all, but nice guitar tricks, but so what.
No soul.
captain america you’re harmonically challenged
God I hate Danny Gatton's playing and tone..
