I saw Gatton and SRV live a bunch of times. By 1990 so many new blues guitarist sounded like SRV, but nobody could copy Gatton. His harmonic knowledge, unpredictability and chops were from another planet.
True, nobody could copy Gatton but I defy ypou to show us a guitaristy who sounds like SRV!
mrfester42 well all the Stevie clones are 3rd generation Hendrix derivatives so there’s that....
That's so perfectly described. 👌😉
SRV wasn’t even in the same league.
To paraphrase Archilochus, Danny Gatton knew many things, but Stevie Ray Vaughan knew one big thing. In this case, as I've gotten older, I like the fox more than the hedgehog, though I appreciate both.
wow so amazing. i grew up right down the street from danny in MD. my sister was good friends with his daughter, and we use to ride our bikes to his house. i was young but i remember he had a pet peacock. also one time Danny gave me a Nolan Ryan coca-cola baseball card. i still have the card!!! i will never forget the awful night, my dad had to explain to my sisters and I what happen. very sad nice man.. i actually shed a tear watching you tube vids of Danny. truly amazing. thanks 4 the card Dan.
So sorry
He was a sweet man.
Is the hardest most difficult thing in life.
WOW….sure seemed like a normal guy..tragically..we are left wondering..what if.. prayers to you..and the Gatton family…miss this magic…🙏😔
What an incredible story! WOW a Nolan Ryan coca-cola baseball card!
And a pet peacock?
Absolutely stunning. He didn't just borrow from all styles, he mastered them all. Some of the greatest guitar footage I've ever seen.
I’ve spent countless hours dissecting this video. It’s a national treasure. Danny is one of the most unique inventive guitar players of all time
this sounds outstanding even now
You're not from the central coast of California are you? Cambria?
@@TBlanktim not me
@@TBlanktim no, we are from Naples FL
No doubt! Danny was incredible. One of the best guitarists I've even seen or heard. He is the best I've seen in the overall genre. I don't play in that genre so I can't touch his stuff but I can easily reconize what he did and why it was so incredible. I played around with a dude back in the late 90s that played this type of music. I taught him some of prog-metal techniques and he taught me some of the basics of hybrid picking like this where you have these groupings of arpegios or whatnot with a "bass" voicing driving the movements. So you end up with 3 or even 4 voicings with minimal (NOT simple or easy though!) effort. Really cool stuff. It got me interested in Chet Atkins... I turned him on to John Petrucci and Yngwie... 😅
Life long player I've seen this dozens of times and it blows me away every time.ive heard em all and I truly believe Danny was in a class of his own.
I've watched this so many times. This guy was beyond belief imaginative and consistently creative. One thing I have to say is, the drummer has amazing perception to what's happening. Listen to how many times the feel changes based on what style Gatton decides to morph into. That's an A class drummer in my opinion.
Dan was known to start when he was ready. His band mates were amazing in that when they were caught off guard when he started, could assimilate in an an instant. Not sure who the drummer was her but it may have been Dave Elliott, consummate professional.
@@RCHeath It's Funhouse - it's Barry Hart. I think you can catch a glimpse of him on one of the other gig excerpts.
A guitartist could study this one video of a single blues break Gatton takes for the rest of your life. Its a deep well.
I've done that, Ive been coming back to this video for years. It was on the gatton website in the late 90s and took FOREVER to load
Cerebral well, only trained guitarist swim well in
Very well said brother.
I've had this clip for years, watched it 100's of times--it still amazes and inpires. I hear a LOT of Buddy Emmons steel guitar influences in there. As well as rockabilly, chicken-pickin', western swing, jazz chord substitution, etc. All seamlessly put together and swinging heavy. He had IT.
it's safe to say that anybody who hits a dislike here has absolutely no understanding of music in general and definitely no clue about what a genius Sir Gatton was.
Maybe they disliked the color of paint on the wall.
@@jessd1952 that's not paint ...its smoke ..and not cigarette smoke.
I belive that tele to be on fire
You got that right!😁
I just hit the dislike button because of you .. nothing to do with music . Just you
He and roy buchanan were roommates at one point. Imagine if had teamed up. If you don't know Roy check his backyard sesh and the documentary.
I'm 54. Been playing since I was 7. And I'm still 54 years behind Danny Gatton.
Its a mixed bag for me to watch these videos of him. Why? Because I'm so happy when he's playing. When the video is over, I'm so depressed that he's dead.
I’m just discovering this guy I don’t have any words that justify Just incredible
at one point the band just stops cause They don’t even know what to do
He is in a completely other realm I just love it.
Thank you universe for the gift that was Danny Gatton
I hear you on that! My first jawdropping experience hearing Gatton was Redneck Jazz live with him, Dick Heintze on piano (another monster virtuoso!) and Buddy Emmons on Steel. Completely blew my mind, this tune is also phenomenal!! Wow, one of the all-time masters.
I'm 69, been playing over 55 of those years... have a lot of favorite guitarists but please do not compare anyone else to this man... in a world of his own, head and shoulders above anyone else... going to go sacrifice another guitar now.
I am 58 been playing 46 of those, yes Danny is something else.
He was in a league of his own, undoubtedly. I've discovered Danny's music only recently (fortunately and unfortunately!). But it's already incredible to see how much he distantiates from those who I thought were already the masters at their game. He is way above them all. It's almost like you could mix all those geniuses into one single person - then you get Danny Gatton.
Lol Rick! Im not there yet but yeah Danny was not only in a different league....the league was on another plant! I was blessed to see him once and it was a once in a life time thing.
You can compare Danny Gatton for example to Birelli Lagrene the same way you can compare an apple to a pear. They are fruits(guitar player) and taste sweet(many-faceted) but you cannot tell which one of them is better in a holistic way. Finally its a matter of taste. They are both masters in their own way. By the way danny gatton is one of the few guitarist that drop my shoes off.
I'm 76; been playing 60 of those years. Danny had a busy technique, and I'm not fond of that kind of playing. I've never heard him play a piece or a song. All he ever did was ramble around all over the fingerboard.
When he tunes the low E up to F and can still play so fluidly, im just absolutely blown away thats just incredible what a player
I remember when i was a huge Roy Buchanan fan back in the early '90s and i found a copy of Guitar Player magazine March '89,and it's story about this guy and his kind f picking just blew me away.Tone, tone, tone and taste.
My all time favorite Telecaster player.
Danny Gatton stands alone.
Gatton really demonstrates in this video his immense knowledge of music theory and his mastery of the guitar. Very few pickers can play with such authority; fantastic rhythms combined with augmented and 7th cords interlace with scale runs and double stops. INCREDIBLE!!
Danny was without a doubt the most brilliant virtuoso I have ever heard. Insane, crazy beautiful genius musician. I really miss him.
2 minutes of this would put millions of guitarists practicing for years in their bedroom. Gatton was from another planet.
Amazing. It's his subtlety of tone and feel that make him unique. The range of different sounds and styles he weaves in this short clip is stunning, and a joy to watch.
I love his open style and how his hands hardly seem to move. So efficient and beautiful playing. Most of all, more musical than many other great guitarists.
Danny and Roy buchanan are two of the most underappreciated guitarists in the past 50 years.
Rumor has it that those two were roomates at one point. Can you imagine that listening to that jam sesh?
His double stops and solo over chord technique is unreal. So much control yet extremely versatile. One of my favorite videos...period.
I loved Danny. I am from Northern Virginia, so I got to see him a few times. He is missed.
Been listening to this guy since i was a youngster. Best guitar player ever!!!!! hands down!!! Too bad his life ended so early and tragically.
One of the worlds most brilliant guitarist, gone too soon. RIP Danny!
I revisit this from time to time. I miss Danny
Of all the videos on YT of him, this may be my fav
David Bockman same here, been coming back for a few years now. Every time I come back I get scared that it might have been removed.
David Bockman me too, was about to comment the same
Download it with Freemake you tube downloader. Keep it forever. It's free . Just look close when setting up the download that you uncheck the things you don't want. Works great .
#metoo!
Same here. Best 6:00 minute master class on guitar technique I've ever seen. Whenever I run across other guitarists who arent familiar with him, I put this video on. Something to the effect of 'Ohhh.........sh1t', or similar is what I hear.
This never gets old. This clip still blows me away
Danny in my opinion is the most underrated guitarist... Incredible, brilliant... I have no words
Incredible. At 2:12, my jaw fell on the floor. Somebody pick it up for me!
Robert Renman I tried, but it ran out the damn door. Mine was chasing after it.
They don’t call it the right hand of God for nothing my friend! One of the greatest hybrid pickers of all time!!
Yeah just let me pick mine up first
No,that where Danny put it,that's where its stayin'
Jaw returned. Damaged.
Once in a millennium talent... This planet may never last long enough to see such talent again.
Who will see him? Only a few can hear him. Only they see him and very clearly, others never hear or heard of him.
oh god, its so good it actually hurts me in my soul...
no one has a mastery like his. and no one else played slide guitar with a human skull. a legend beyond description.
for me this clip embodies the master at work, his musical and technical skill meeting at one perfect moment ... or six minutes of perfect moments really because the entire solo is perfect in its balance, harmonic structure, everything. This is, for you non-guitarists (like me), seeing Danny Gatton for the first time, the guitar as it should/could be played. The best of the Danny Gatton videos, and I think I've just about watched them all now. Amazing talent.
Thank god for these videos, Danny's legacy will live on. The Master of the Telecaster!
Every time I take a spin around RUclips and light on a number of great guitar videos that floor me, I keep coming back here for a reality check thinking "Hang on -could Danny really have been that good????"
And every time the same answer gets forcibly knocked into my head once more: "Don't be stupid - here is clear evidence that Danny was/is light years ahead of the game"
There's a bunch of guitar players that I love & admire..but when I come back & visit danny it's so damn obvious that know guitarist could or still cannot touch him..the most brilliant & technical guitarist there ever was!!!!!
Danny was incredibly focused at this point. He ripped it a new one.
This is about the best electric guitar playing I've ever heard. It's simply mind-boggling the different styles and techniques he includes in one song. He was simply from a different planet.
I love it when he throws the bango rolls in! I dont think anyone knew more licks then Danny! Amazing video!
The Master of the TeleCaster!
dammit, everytime I watch this video is the best time I had this week.
The very best electric player who ever touched the instrument,in my humble opinion !
I never knew about Danny Gatton until today..... What a phenomonal player he was... He seemed so likeable and so down to earth in his instructional video's...he should of received the fame and recognition that was due to him ...He deserved it !
This is classic Danny Gatton... wow. There ain't no tabs, sheet music...or anything else that could capture what Danny is doing here.. it's straight from Danny's soul. He was a rare, unique individual... a GIANT amoung guitarists. I miss you Danny.... you were the absolute best.
This is nothing short of incredible.
The country Cobain. A life thrown away, Pity, I still am inspired by his licks, a master.
The best! This is a superb demo of his awesome guitar versatility and expertise. Greatest guitarist ever. Such a smooth groove and musical vocabulary .
I think its really cool that this has been viewed almost 300,000 times. Bottom line this right here is timeless, righteous and very true. Danny Gatton should definetly be remembered as the world's greatest guitar player that nobody hardly knew about. thanks to RUclips he'll live on
anytime i feel i "know it all" i just check out gatton.
he is the coolest technical bluesy player ever . it always sounds fun , and cool , no matter what
John McMinn exactly, if ever I need to be motivated to practice I come to some rare Danny Gatton lick. So many fresh ideas in everything he plays.
Incredible, Top Shelf playing right there...
Much love to Danny`s family from Holland!
Every so often I come back to this... it always hurts!
6 minutes of free flowing ideas, constantly growing.. amazing!
Back again. I remember 2.14 seeming like voodoo when I was a teenager.
The most unforgiving guitar ever, the Tele, straight to amp, no effects. The fastest and most perfect hands to ever play the guitar. Perfection.
Its a shame RUclips wasn't around when Danny was alive because he would have been huge. I was lucky enough to see him live and wow he was good.
This is great guys! Glad to see all the comments. Keep 'em coming!
That guitar sounds glorious.
He's a master at every facet of guitar, and he makes it look totally effortless.
No matter what do you play, jazz, country or rock, this guy keep kicking asses even after death.
truly incredible. imagine the work he put in to play like that. a master.
Loved this guy and miss him much. You all have seen some cool shows, you should have seen mine. My wife is Robin Ruddy, steel player, banjo, dobro, etc. We lived in the DC area for some years. Danny and some of the band were friends. They played at our wedding at a friends house. I've got a picture of Danny playing my strat, and Robin in her wedding dress jammin' on steel. Beat that! So sorry for his passing and our loss. Great guy.
Gatton was not trying to prove anything like other guitarist of the time period. Pure genius on the Guitar is on display in this video folks. No fancy effects, no massive production, just Gatton, his Telecast, Fender amp and TONS of talent. That run he does around 2.54 is pure Gatton!
Now I’ve seen the best ❤RIP
man this is incredible. incredible fusion of styles.
"If there's a rock and roll heaven, you know they got a hell of a band!"
Few know Danny played every stringed instrument incredibly well...pedal steel, banjo, mandolin....if it had strings , he killed on it like no other.
If I hadn't heard Gatton - I would never have believed anyone could be that good.
I've been watching this video over and over for more than a decade. It's one of my favourites.
This is fnk ing crazy!! I love Danny! I’ve been playing 30yrs and am fairly accomplished. I can watch most players and at least have a basic understanding of what they are doing. But with Danny it’s like he is so far ahead of what the normal brain can keep up with!!! He is unreal!!! Not of this solar system!!!!
Bought Elmira St. when it first came out.
Whilst at various bike-meetings I would occaisionally blast out Funky Mama from the VW camper van. This always resulted in a few Germans asking what it was! It then needed to be played a few more times along with feverishly written info about Danny. Got me plenty of free beer over the years. Thanks to the internet the word is spreading.
Thanks for posting this dog gone it. Pete Kennedy turned me onto this wow
I am totally blown away everytime I watch this footage, and I've watched about 80 times over the past 4 years. Danny was on the BEST guitarist... period, his phasing, knowledge of the fretboard, and rhythm technique is mind blowing..
Just WoW! Wow! Have mercy Ms Percy.. that ole boy could damn sure play..
This is some of the hottest playing you'll hear anywhere. When I lived in Cincinnati there was a guy named Junior Spivey who reminded me a lot of this. He had this same kind of off-the-wall approach where you never knew what was coming. And Scotty Anderson was from around that area as well. He's a monster.
Kevin Smith yeah, Scotty is a beast!
I've watched this video about 60 times and it blows me away every single time. Gatton was a pure guitar Genius; with nothing but a Telecast and a Fender amp.... I know guitarist that are lost unless they have a bank of effects and a Marshall stack. His right hand technique set the standard.
That lick he plays at the beginning of a chorus at about 2:10 is one of my favorite Danny licks. I finally get a chance to see him playing this remarkable lick, so remarkable I can't believe it and it makes me laugh!!
I saw the second to his last show in Denver at Herman's Hideaway. He was playing a Robin double neck guitar and sitting on a stool. This was the third time I had seen him in Colorado and everytime he played his ass off! He played Seattle his last show....then back to Maryland and ended it all. What a huge loss. He is sorely missed.
not enough people can understand a genius like this.
Total command of that Tele.........Damn!!
Danny Gatton was a game changer!!!!!
I saw him LIVE it changed me forever.
Bottom LIne NYC!!!!!!!!!!!! wild.
Can't stop watching this clip, but to say any one guitarist is the greatest is as insane as this clip .
Unmatched. This is beyond the beyond.
Jeff Beck + Danny Gatton would have been quite a night of guitar lessons.
Damn! He made it look so effortless. I've only recently discovered his music and was saddened that he came to such a sad end.
Danny Gatton discovered the remarkable fact that the guitar was designed for the hand... four frets and four fingers with an opposable thumb for leverage/pressure... this is why he was able to reach so many notes so quickly... He discovered the secret of hand posture very early in his career... still, he was a melodic genius.
One of my favourite videos on youtube!
Right across the street from Fontana Bowlerama! I saw him there several times in the mid-70s. It's been almost 40 years, but the awe has not worn off.
I have seen EVERY and I mean EVERY so called greatest guitar player. He was one of, if not the the best!
This never gets old.
Absolutely incredible !!!
such a terrible loss. he should still be with us, growing and inspiring us all..
God bless him and his memory
shally
Once every six months or so - I return to this clip and try to cop a fraction of a lick or two and come away a humbled and better musician.
Magic playing...Danny can do it all...in total control...a tele and a fender amp with a bit reverb.. I can watch this over and over again.
Every time I see this it floors me. This guy was the best ever.
Greatest guitar player no one knew. If it wasnt for putzin around on RUclips I wouldnt have either. He plays so effortlessly and it just always sounds right. Simply amazing
Genius...plus his tone is the best thing to ever come out of a tele.
Sick.......the man is incomparable. Nobody can do that. It's not possible.
Beyond incredible!
What a master! This man had so many tricks up his sleeve it's hard to keep up. Beautiful stuff.
The best guitarist I ever saw live.
That really is just pure quality. Amazing clip of a master tele player
What a talent.. The Late Great Danny Gatton… wow!..’nuff said
