I live in Maryland and grew up on Gatton.Seen him maybe 50 or 60 times with the Danny Gatton Band at My Friends House in Tacoma/Langley Park during the weekdays maybe 20 customers in the place.A treat and he was better than they say...no one comes close. Shoutout to Mark Oconnor on violin...a monster
Danny Gatton was 'better than they say'? The man has a signature model of Fender guitar with his name on it. People who knew about guitar playing sure knew about Danny Gatton. That said, I don't think I have enough of his material in my music library. This makes me want to do some research...
Albert has played with everybody who is anybody on the country scene (not bad for a Brit) and always seems to enjoy himself. I was amazed to find that he is embarking on a 2022 tour taking in the USA. UK and Europe. He is 79 folks!
The fact that he wrote "Country Boy" is kind of a mind warp. AND, if you didn't know, you don't want to follow him on keyboards. Plus he is an absolute gent and a love.❤
The thing with Albert Lee which is really unique and what a lot of people don’t realize is that he’s not just got great technique and speed. The biggest thing that makes him stand apart from other players is his ability to improvise and play complex fast runs that join together seelessly and completely differently every time he plays a song. the endless ideas that he produces with speed fluency timing and swing is never the same on any song. I am not sure how he does this because lots of guitarists can learn a solo or a challenging piece of music note for note by copying it, but Albert will play it different every night and it will sound incredible.
Yeah bud, there's a whole genre/scene of live music oriented bands that do this. 2 or 3 of them played 300 nights a year, some years! I'm obviously talking about Grateful Dead and Phish.
Albert has the "sweetness" that most players lack. He was born with it as it is something that one cannot learn as we can witness here. This is why Albert is simply the BEST. That is just life folks...
R.I.P. DANNY GATTON, Mr. TELEMASTER! You really were the BEST ever, and are missed by so many. I wish I knew what your reasons were to leave so us all so damn young and early in this life. I wish I could have seen you in person, but I didn’t, so I watch all the videos of you that I can. You are my guitar HERO, and don’t think you can possibly be topped. I will be glad to meet you!
Danny's record company dropped him at the same time he and his wife got divorced....some pretty depressing stuff for this extraordinary human being. We are all so very sad he went the way he did. He had to be in a very hurt state of mind. I saw him many times in DC with Emmy Lou and used him on a Kawasaki Motor Bike commercial which Emmy Lou sang for me on that commercial. RIP Danny.
Vince Gill is an incredible front man, excellent vocals, good guitar pickin', can easily see why he sold so many albums...first time seeing the late, great Danny Gatton...he deserves and proves all the accolades given to him. Other stuff I've heard by him showcases his incredible virtuosity in many many styles. Bluegrass, country, jazz, blues and rock, just amazing.
Danny Gatton for sure is a legend, but I entirely love Vince Gill`s feel and touch. From a musical point of view he is untouchable, and he also has a fantastic voice
Isn't Vince amazing? His taste, tone and touch on the instrument and as a vocalist and bandleader are unrivaled. He's the complete package, which is probably why Dire Straits invited him to join back in the 1990s, and also why the remaining members of the Eagles asked him to fill the spot of the late Glenn Fry. I love Vince's Telecaster work; his tone and taste are just amazing. And his chops are world-class, too, but he never overplays.
Wow, country music is not my first love but great is great and thank you Vince Gill for getting Danny Gatton and Albert Lee out there with you and your band. What a treat. No big egos out there. Just big talent.
It takes an exceptional guitarist to play such quick solos without any distortion and minimal slapback. There's nowhere to hide in ALs sound. Much respect.
For me personally It doesn't get any better than Vince Gill. He holds back here slightly in deference to his guitar heroes but after seeing him going back to when he first joined Pure Prairie League he's as good if not more gifted than anyone I've ever see, And that's just on guitar, when he picks up a banjo, mandolin or anything with strings like he did with PPL it's a whole new world. This video is a gift for all. .

It's impossible to formulate a list of the "best" or "greatest" guitarists in the world, past or present due to criteria used to judge and the many genres involved. It is a certainty that the knee-jerk reflexive bowing down to Jimi Hendrix is pure bullshit when one considers dudes like Danny Gatton, Tommy Emmanuel, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Roy Clark, and many others. Personally, I've never seen anyone who could play about any song by ear, utilizing the entire fret board with effects generated from his fingers quite like Danny Gatton. Up close and at a small venue, it was astonishing to witness.
Thanks so much for posting this MAGnificent demonstration of three guitar MASTERS. I will always be heartbroken that Danny chose to leave this world. He's an incredible talent and I'm sure every bit as much a human being. We're blessed to have Vince and Albert still sharing their awesome talent. Rest in Heaven, Danny.
Man, I can't believe that Danny Gatton had to take his life... He was finally getting where he always wanted to be and, well, it was just messed up... But good to see him in better times... Always great seeing Albert Lee... He is such a sweet and unassuming man and plays way better than folks give him credit for and... ...Vince Gill??? What can you say??? Bob

It is so very real and people think you can just shake it off... We both know that you can't...
@john mcclure FYI John...that was Roy Buchanan who hung himself in a jail cell after being arrested for public intoxication and some kind of domestic dispute whatever that was? Danny shot himself in his garage. So sad but what a fantastic guitar player and one of the great ones!
I spoke with his mom shortly after he passed he was physically unwell Not a drug addiction i also had in depth tone discussions with Danny always available and patient and a gentleman Music business is a tough business and also extremely difficult to earn a living in (many “star” players have told me this)

This has got to be the best version of this I’ve heard, absolutely outstanding. I saw him once and had the pleasure of speaking to him briefly as he signed my cd cover, a very pleasant unassuming man.
I met Vince Gill in the early 90's at Six Flags Great Adventure in NJ. I was filling in with the band who played in the center court area, next to the pizza shop. After our 4th set, he walked up and said, very politely "Hello Sir, I really enjoyed your covers". We spoke for about 10 minutes. I then walked down to the recording shop they had at the park, and recorded a version of Little Liza Jane!! I still have that cassette in my studio!
I've been a drummer for years but my debut on guitar was opening for Danny in Roslyn, Va. new years eve 1975. I thought that I was terrible and he assured me that I was good and that I needed a better band. What a cool guy. I knew a lot of Roy's people as well. This video is a guitarists dream! The talent scale broke on this one. Thanks for posting.
"So and so is the best guitar player." We hear that too often and it's such a gross generalization that it can never be true. So many perfect 10's. I will, however, likely take this to my grave: In (t)his style no guitar player was better than Danny Gatton - may he rest in a peace that he was unable to find on this Earth.
Albert Lee is the kindest, sweetest, nicest man I've ever met. Watch his face when others play, he looks so pleased when other perform, he is always supportive of everyone he plays with. Plus, he is a number one major guitarist, obviously. My thanks to my adopted home of Great Britain for sharing him with us, his lucky admirers. P.S. He sings. His song "Julie's House" is so hauntingly sad.
Albert Lee is a legend and has been an A-list/first-call guitar guy for a half century or more. How in demand was he during his salad days in Nashville? He got double or even triple scale, something very few session guys get - and drove a Ferrari to work. Why? Because the man loves performing, never lets his ego get in the way, and strives to make the headliner sound good. And he's a Telecaster virtuoso... even if he does play a Music Man these days!
Maybe some of the stuff that Danny Gatton does is technically more difficult but I really love Albert Lee and Vince Gill's tone much better. That is only my subjective opinion.
Vince, Albert, and Danny are amazing.... Jeff Beck and Danny Gatton had so much in common. Great guitarist and great car builders. Wish they got together.
StuartBell52 Danny went to Europe to meet a few “guys”. Clapton was a now show but sent his manager. Beck said no way and nobody from his organization came to Lee The Humbler.
Albert Lee was playing rhythm for Clapton with Duck Dunn , Chris Stainton and Jamie Oldaker, what a band with Ry Cooder being opening act in Memphis, one heck of a show. Cooder was just as good, hoped they'd jam at end but no such luck. That would have been unbearable. Thanks for posting this, the Chet Atkins and Larry Carlton was also good.
That’s his signature Ernie Ball Musicman’s tone cutting through, but he always sounded better,to my ears,on his old Tele with the B-bender fitted on it.
Albert will play with such a great tone and pull out beautiful little riffs and unexpected licks he is amazing, I first saw when he was around 17 year old and he stood out even then, Albert played in one of his earliest bands but never owned a guitar and had to borrow a guitar when rehearsing, he learned piano before moving to guitar.
Dan i was there in 59 when Albert got his first guitar .a Hofner committee.i was the singer in the group.i still have many black and white pics taken in 59.
This is absolutely fantastic I have never seen a better guitar show plus a fabulous band like this one oh why is a great great show and pure quality. Thank you thank you so much I have to really stand up and incline myself towards all of them. This is the best thing maybe that I have ever seen in pure music. Thank you thank you so much this simply fantastic!
Lee and Gill know Dannys playing very well yet they're still flabbergasted and blown away at what they're hearing. Just watch the look on their faces when Danny finishes that piece at 12:55.
I was fortunate enough to see Danny Gatton on tour in a small, hot, crowded venue years ago and I thought the roof was going to come off the building! What a great show that was, he passed on 4 years after. RIP Mr. Gatton.
Thanks so much for posting this! I saw this back in the day on TNN, and was blown away! I had the privilege to see Danny at a Chicago NAMM show (not sure the year) and have since seen Albert twice.
awesome! I wish I had gotten to see Danny live. Ive seen Albert twice. Once at a guitar clinic at a small shop in Ft Worth back in 1994 and last Summer in Ft Worth with a full band show. He was still ripping it up just like he did here. I have some more Danny Gatton videos that I will be uploading in the next few weeks.
Yeah, it was great. And guess who he opened for? John Hiatt with Sonny Landreth on guitar (the Slow Turning album touring band). The next night I saw Paul Gilbert doing a full set of 60's covers; the two that I remember were Hendix's Third Stone from the Sun and Genesis' The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (with Paul playing the keyboard parts on guitar!).
A great collection of musicians. You could spend a lifetime learning the licks of Vince, Albert and Danny. I have to admit to shedding a tear or two when Dawn Sears stepped up to the microphone. One of the greatest (and underappreciated) female voices out of Nashville., her work with Vince Gill and with the Time Jumpers was amazing. Gone to soon at age 53, RIP Dawn, and thanks for the beautiful music you made.

Albert Lee is the Greatest player I have ever seen,And have been playing since the Beatles on Sullivan.Sorry Eric!
Albert respects the melody.
Been playing since The Beatles on Sullivan also, and agree, greatest I have EVER SEEN!
I love seeing Albert Lee really diggin' Danny Gatton
This is absolutely fantastic I have never seen a better guitar show plus a fabulous band like this one oh why is a great great show and pure quality. Thank you thank you so much I have to really stand up and incline myself towards all of them. This is the best thing maybe that I have ever seen in pure music. Thank you thank you so much this simply fantastic!
Danny was such a humble person you could see it in his eyes and actions that he was amongst others of that same caliber of musicians too.
What a treasure of American music we lost when Danny Gatton left us; I remember hearing about his death on the radio and just couldn’t believe it.
Simply Amazing!!! 👏
Some really quick fingers here and some AMAZINGLY talented musicians! This is worth listening to over and over and over and over.... you get my point!
Vince Gill incredible my icon, this entire group awesome show of musicianship
Albert lee el puto amo de la barraca, muy bueno, genial!!!!!
Wonderful sounds....
RIP Mr. Gatton.
This is simply TOO good!! Damn!!
thank you. saw danny gatton in the perfect sized club, were his amp "was in the tubes" a bit. he really lit it up.
I love Vince’s Tele tone. There’s a sweetness to it....it’s delicious.
Lovely..what a synchronization..
Holy Cow..outstanding post
Albert Lee was at Players Music right? 94 would be about the right time frame, I remember going straight from thatclinic to a gig that night.
Ronnie Crecelius yep! That was the place. Maybe 20 or so people there if I remember correctly. I still have an Ernie Ball T-Shirt I was given from it.
Gone to soon at age 53, RIP Dawn, and thanks for the beautiful music you made.
that's patsy Cline re-incarnated
I was lucky enough to see the time jumpers with Vince and Dawn Sears. Incredible talent in that band.
Yes. I heard Patsy too. @@joeguerra7869
