The 2024 Toyota Tacoma has not been selling as well as the 2023, but there are multiple reasons why. We've never seen this much competition in the mid-sized market, and the competitors are good. Will Toyota eventually lose the status of "king of the midsized truck"? 2024 might be the year if so.

@@ultraneight The 2.4 turbo seems better than the 4th gen 2.5L hybrid on the RX350. They seem to have tuned the turbo better for 2024 models, so it doesn’t feel like there is any turbo lag. Getting the EPA 24 mpg seems hard to reach in aggressive driving, but my wife likes the turbo more than the hybrid. I was surprised that the GH Hybrid Max version delivers better mileage when driving it bit more spirited. Trucks are meant to be used hard., so let’s see how this works in the Land Cruiser/4Runner. Toyota charging V6 prices for a turbo-4 is a problem.

I bought a 2018 Tacoma Sport. I love it. It was my first Toyota ever, and I had wanted a Tacoma for a long time. I even have a lift kit and KO2 tires and Gear rims on it. Everything is blacked out. I seldom go anywhere without someone commenting on it. I am now retired so I literally only drive about (embarrassed to even admit this) maybe four thousand or forty five hundred miles a year - IF that - and it only has 36,500 miles on it now. It'll literally last me forever and it'll probably be around even after I'm gone. I did consider getting a new one, but I didn't like the new engine and I also don't like buying the first or even second year of any new type model. As for the other trucks you mentioned, well, obviously we all have our favorites. I have had a Nissan Xterra and it was a good vehicle for me, and I had it ten years with fairly LOW mileage on it (I never put a lot of miles on any of my vehicles) but started having issues with it that even the dealer couldn't figure out, so I traded it in. So, I won't go with Nissan again. As for Chevy - I'd NEVER buy anything GM, and definitely NOT Chevrolet, but again, MY preference based on past experiences. I've had two Ford F150s, but again, I'm not really in need of a big truck like that and frankly, I'm not a fan of the midsized truck they have. Anyhow, I think Toyota will be fine, but their pricing is a bit out of line, and they'll find that out when the reality of them not selling hits their bottom line.

As someone who bought a new Tacoma in 2014, 4 Cyl (NON turbo), manual transmission, single cab, bench seat, crank windows, no power door lock, no power mirrors. The only option was 4WD and I paid $19,995 for it. The new Tacoma is a joke. I don’t care that a V6 isn’t available. I do care that they put turbos on the 4 cyl. I do care that they have a screen for the gauge cluster. I live where it’s really HOT. How will that screen hold up 10 years from now baking in the hot sun? I could understand, hey, we got rid of the complex, technical gauge cluster and slapped a screen in its place to save you money… but where is the savings? I can understand, hey, it was expensive to make manual window cranks where an electric window is simple mass produced money grub so it saves money, where is the savings? Again, I’m not a die hard 6cyl fan BUT I could understand them saying, we’ve eliminated 2 injectors, 2 valves, 2 pistons, and all the other complexities of a 6 cyl and slapped a turbo in to save you money… but where are the savings? So you haven’t saved me money, you’ve introduced questionable reliability and slapped the Toyota badge on it, I’m gonna stay away.

Initially I was looking for a Tacoma trailhunter until I started seeing the prices of the lower trims. Not to mention the interior is so plastic for all you’re paying for. I also drove a GMC canyon AT4X and that felt great, but let’s say that GMC/Chevy aren’t known for their reliability. Finally, I went to the dealer and drove the Frontier and a Tundra (deciding between a mid or full size at that point). Had a 2021 TRD Off Road Premium (leather, sunroof, heated seats) coming off lease. Psyched to get a 2024 of same thing…wasn’t even considering anything else…until I specced it on their website. It wasn’t the base price which I was ok with…it’s the packages where they hid the big price increases. Premium package on my 2021 was like $3,500. On the 2024 it was almost $9,000!!!!
My 2021 was $45,000. 2024 with same specs was over $55,000. My 10,000 mile lease on the 2021 was $1,000 out of pocket, $338/mo. Website was saying $6,000 down, $668/mo. Took it right out of consideration.
I hadn’t even considered a Nissan Frontier and it was the last one which we said we should at least look at. We were more impressed than we expected. Looked great. Drove great. Tons of features. And the reliability. Was also noticeably faster than my 2021 Tacoma. So that’s what I have now. 2024 Nissan Frontier Pro4X with basically every option they have. Sunroof, heated seats, heated steering wheel, 360 camera, traffic sign recognition, dampened and electronic locking tailgate, cargo bed lights, wireless Apple CarPlay, Fender audio system with a dedicated subwoofer. It’s great and was easily the best bang for the buck. Impressed with the build quality and the fit and finish.
Heavily shopped the Colorado too. Great looking truck inside and out. Was fun to drive. Price in the level
I was looking was comparable (excluding ZR2; was over $60,000). The Z71 and Trail Boss were comparably priced to the Frontier. But they didn’t lease well due to low residuals. Including the ZR2. My 2021 Tacoma residual was $37,000. Z71 was only $28,000 and even ZR2 (we did shop it) was only $33,000 (from $60,000). The Frontier residual was $36,000.
Frontier was the clear winner. Had no hesitation getting as it was in its own league with all factors taken in to account. Have had it a few months now and happy with the decision.

I have to get something fixed now and then.
Some people find this like $600 alternator swap to be annoying, so they eventually get a new truck.
But at the new higher prices, I would just as soon pay for an occasional repair, especially since my truck seems to be better built, doesn't have a turbo, and has the rear half doors. The new one doesn't have them, and they work great for me.

The only reason turbo motors are being forced on us en masse is due to the government regulations regarding emissions both here and in Europe. It's not a black and white matter, as I remember the local mountains being completely obscured by smog in the eighties and now, the improvement in air quality is incredible and I like that fact. But in an effort to push the public toward EV adoption, the regulations for ICE vehicles continue to become stricter and stricter. Manufacturers have made huge strides in emissions but at a cost, and that cost is rising. Also, few people bought base model vehicles. Do you remember when almost all trucks were single cab? Super and extra cabs were around but not popular till the nineties when soon, the majority of pickups had some sort of 4 row configuration and then so many of those were sold that Japanese regular cabs were phased out. At least here in the states.

Toyota was king when the competition was mediocre but the land scape has changed. The GM twins are beautiful capable trucks, the Frontier is old school and reliable and the Ford Ranger is new and fresh with the option of a 2.7 turbo V6. The huge price difference between the Tacoma and all its competitors and the fact that the Tacoma is the only truck out of the midsize field built in Mexico will shrink its sales. Personally if I was going to buy a midsize truck today I would buy a Ranger 2.7 V6 or a GMC canyon AT4. Sad thing is I am a Toyota fan but I'm not really thrilled with the direction Toyota has taken.

I've looked on-line at the new Tacomas and there is already a little bit of discounting going on at some dealerships and you definitely don't have to pay over MSRP. That surprised me to a degree, as I figured there would be huge markups on this fresh redesign. The overall car market is still pretty decent, but a lot of "serial buyers" (those who trade every 2 or 3 years) are so upside down they ae effectively on the sidelines. And the people who are left won't buy unless there is a good deal on the table.

Toyota and Ford are the top selling utes but prices are getting similarly ridiculous. Chinese companies are introducing more competitors by the year and Kia are releasing a direct competitor.
