    It used to feel so good to listen to sad, mellow, angsty music that made me ache or think deeply. I loved my music to challenge me. Nowadays, I’ve been saying “I don’t want to have thinking accompanied with my music anymore. I want easy listening. I just want music to feel good.” And I never thought I would say that. My pretentiousness is gone and I look forward to a new era of bops and hits and repetitive chord progressions lol
    PS: Silk Sonic could be a big part of this era’s transition.

    Ngl, I feel the opposite way you said after covid. During covid I listened to more upbeat and happy songs and can’t say that sadness was anywhere in my mind. Now after covid is done and I’m back to the real world, I’m more depressed than ever and listening to more sad music than ever. Life was peachy before the pandemic, now it’s bland and monotone.

    There was a song that came out a few months back by David Guetta and Bebe Rexha called "I'm Good". I saw so many people putting it on their worst lists for last year, but I honestly thought it was an incredibly refreshing breath of fresh air. After ten years of moody indie pop, it was so nice to hear an upbeat pop hit about having fun and feeling good.
    This video is outstanding, I really hope you keep making these.

    I agree! I came to a similar conclusion and see people gravitating towards this path. It brings me hope. Albums such as Kendrick Lamar's Mr. Morale revealing innerstandings of truth; The Weeknd and Tyler the Creator killing of their famed personas in Dawn FM and CMIYGL: The Estate Sale; Lana Del Rey returning 'home' in Ocean Blvd; and Kali Uchis manifesting love through Red Moon in Venus. Something different I've observed is also the resurgence of psychedelic music with artists like Cuco and others transcending genres and blending in cultural elements like from cumbia. I hope to see more soul music, too! It's become one of my favorites since the pandemic.

    I feel exactly as you do and during the pandemic I listened to mostly sad indie artists or just angsty music but, now we are coming out of our pandemic I'm tired of listening to music that makes me feel really melancholic / sad. I'm really excited for this new era of music

    I've been looking into the 1970s. My goal is to understand and produce the effect they gave around that era withoutjust copying it. Music is about expression, but mostly it should be in a positive direction and not how it's been lately. The 70s did have a few less cheery tunes, but that was only because the artist spoke on the condition of the world and not solely focus on themselves like we do. We went from peace and activism to depression and suicidal thoughts, and that's not ok because the kids are the ones who are most effected. I remember when Sad by X came out and a little 7 year old just kept repeating, "suicide....suicide....suicide" thats when i knew we were going at this all wrong. As a musician it broke my heart when i found out that music is mostly generated on a computer. That alone took alot of soul out of music. Once the lyrics became fogged with sadness it crippled our reality.
    The world needs a shift in its music because it is the heartbeat of society. If we keep making mindless junk tunes our heart will stop.

    I think you make a lot of good points, but at the same time, I've always felt like "sad gurl indie" (not at all a derogatory term, its the music I most often listen to) is gonna be the next big thing. Taylor Swift made two albums in that style (and I'd say her most recent, "Midnights," borrows from the style as well, though its more electronic). Phoebe Bridgers/boygenius are on a meteoric rise, and I feel like with her/them are other artists like Gracie Abrams, Lizzy McAlpine and others who are coming up as well and getting a lot of attention. So I suppose it depends on how soon you think this transformation will take place. By 2025? Maybe not. By 2030? I could certainly see it.

    • @sergescardigno
      @sergescardigno  Год назад +5

      2030 is where I’m thinkin as well, I think you’re on the money in that the sad indie has to play out to its full potential in mainstream

  • @MattOLearyMusic

    Not sure which video, but you've mentioned how subcultures have proliferated and thrived in the digital age, i.e. wonderful little oases of underground hobbies and niche interests. I wonder how this "High" period we seem to be entering will compare to older high periods, when there was one mainstream and not much in the way of organized, rich subcultures/niche communities. It may be harder to point to dance music or visceral pop as an iconic representation of our time, in the same way as Beatlemania, because it's a social option to ignore the mainstream and happily exist in a rich subculture (like sad indie, prog, or other more cerebral art forms).
    You've got us thinkin, Serge.

    • @sergescardigno
      @sergescardigno  Год назад

      Very true, subcultures might make the shift a bit harder to recognize, but ultimately what I'm getting at here is a general shift in tone that'll hopefully pervade all genres. I know that's a big claim, but definitely something to think about! "Sadder" music is definitely having a moment in mainstream right now, and I think that we're gonna see that peak and fade not too far into the upcoming decade.
