as far as the "industry plant" narrative around her is concerned, it's really funny how many people act like the music industry hasn't always been (to an extent) about who you know. that's kinda just how entertainment is in general. what matters at the end of the day is the artistry and the drive to solidify your identity as a musician, which no amount of money can really establish. she was releasing music on bandcamp looong before she even got "help" from her dad's connections anyway, so the suggestion that she hasn't put in the work never made any sense to me.

I don't think this was said in the video, but not only has Clairo matured in her body language between album covers, but she also matured in the way she dresses. I personally loved all of Clairo's outfits from over the years, and it appears that she is still fond of the 80's as she wears a Phil Collins t-shirt in the thumbnail. With that said, I couldn't help but notice how her current fashion choices reflect a new chapter in her career, paying great respect to folk music. I just started listening to Clairo's material last week, and I must say it's been an absolute honor to see her change in numerous aspects and make some amends in her personal life. It upsets me how many people hurt such a loving and caring soul, and I hope she continues finding happiness in her life, as she lives closer to her family, bonds with her dog, and begins her Sling tour next month.

I'm strongly inclined to think it's mostly about sexism. I've never seen a male artist being attacked for being the child of a musician but I've seen several other talented young female artists accused this way, as though everything they've achieved was just handed to them on a plate. King Princess in particular comes to mind.

after i watched the apple music interview and she said she might take a break for five years, or all in all kind of quit music for awhile, i won't lie i was really upset. i discovered her in like late 2017, and just fell in love with her and her work. i can see why she'd want to kind of break out of the music world for awhile, and i'll respect her decisions no matter what.

    • @sergescardigno
      @sergescardigno  2 года назад +11

Honestly, I really really like Sling and it’s helped me overcome a lot of difficulties I’ve had for the last couple of weeks. I would understand why people might find immunity more relatable, but for me, Sling made me feel like I finally found someone who understands me. It felt like Clairo was there for me when I needed someone to talk to and even though these lyrics are supposed to be more personal to her I really felt a deep connection to this album. It was like she knew the pain I was going through, and I really don’t know how else to say it.
I also see a lot of people praising just her lyrical work on this album (not in this comment section but just in general) but I was actually really amazed by the production as well. Maybe a lot of Clairo fans are used to listening to bedroom pop and expected Clairo to produce something that her audiences are used to listening, which I understand. But I highly recommend giving it a couple more chances before giving up on the album. I think if you get used to the sounds and learn to adapt to a new genre it might help expand a new perspective of music and discover that you might actually like it. Maybe I’m just biased because this album came to me when I was at my worst and I’ve actually cried over this album lol. In my opinion I think it deserves more recognition but yeah I’m not an expert or anything I just really liked this album and how it sounded and how it spoke to me so I understand if it’s not for everyone :)

im so glad theres a video on this topic bc sling was such a huge deviation from immunity. i felt jack antonoff's finger prints enveloping it. i didn't like sling at first because i felt blindsided by the success of immunity. it was leaning towards a lo-fi/rock vibe that was a gem that i fell inlove with. i really feel that the community hailing her as "princess of bedroom pop" took a toll on her. i feel like claire really needed to make sling or else she wouldn't have put an album out at all.

amazing video man it really made me shed tears. i've been listening to sling a lot the past few weeks due to some kind of identification with the whole process of growing up and wanting to be home. bambi and amoeba have been two special crying songs, and north/bags/sofia had that place in 2019 when i was also exploring my sexuality and falling in love. this video delves deeper into everything i wanted to know about the transition between the two records; so thank you so much for this.
i would love to see one about lorde's transition between pure heroine/melodrama/solar power, since this woman's so cryptic in her album advertising and explaining. keep up the good work and congratulations!!!

u should do one on billie and how ppl are saying shes trying to branch out from her “signature style” and why it’s not working for her. like how in the first half of Happier Than Ever” it sounds like some of her older albums but then the second half when the tempo picks up and she gets more seemingly angry rather than sad she sounds like a different singer and takes on these really strong and angry notes when she typically goes for somber and hurt (especially w the guitar in the background)

I think there's something so interesting about modern pop performers where they are very directly calling out the industry and society for their obvious sins. Olivia Rodrigo, on her very first LP in her very first song addresses the fact that it's "Brutal".
Mere exposure to the recording industry, finding the success you worked for, is a chilling prospect. If Clairo decides to never work in the industry again, there's no blaming her.

Here's the thing, and I think you touched on this pretty well. Clairo almost certainly is an industry plant. There is no real way around that. HOWEVER that should not and does not for me take away from the fact that she's an excellent musician and an incredibly talented songwriter, and by all means deserves her fame based on that alone. If you look at your favorite artists, you would be SHOCKED at how many received some "outside help" getting to where they are, but that shouldn't detract from the artform itself.

Love this. One thing I would add on is that while a lot of the lyrics don’t need a ton of research there r some parts where it can lend further insight. ie on harbor the line abt carrying someone up the stairs is a reference to how her bf would do that for her which connects it to I wouldn’t ask u and imo gives the line a lot more depth. I hope she keeps making music but want her to do what’s best for her. I do think it’s inevitable that she will put out music is some shape or form, even if it’s not at all formal.

Bro it’s not that her song writing isn’t good it’s the fact that she’s marketed and pushes herself as a indie artist who did it all by herself when she indeed was getting help from her dad and he definitely pulled some strings to get her where she is. Her music is good and I fuck with it, but when you’re not honest with your audience and transparent about how you got your start it tends to give this false narrative or delusion that other indie artist can do it too when it honestly isn’t that easy.

I like the Divoom Dito speaker in the background! I have the same exact one. This is a nice video. I’m going to have to dive deeper into the lyrics of Sling and get a better understanding of each song. Because the record isn’t catchy, and I know it isn’t meant to be, I’m definitely having a hard time remembering the lyrics and the name of the songs based on the lyrics. I’m going to see her live on February 26. So I also want to make sure I know what she is singing about by then. I will probably have to rewatch this video and read the annotations on genius.

haha i did a review on it! they sent it out for free (i privated the review tho, trying to keep the channel more music-focused now). but yes if you’ve never listened to more folky stuff like elliott smith before, this might be a harder grab on first listen for you. eventually it clicks though and you’re sucked in. totally hear you on researching before the show, i think the sling tour will be the best to do that for, if any

God loves u all ❤ How do you find eternal life? John 3:16. By believing in the Lord Jesus and repenting of your sins. So if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Repent and trust in Christ, as he calls the whole world to in John 3:16. Do it bro, it's hard to follow Him, but he can give you peace, joy and a new heart. Transfer your trust to Him bro, amen.

Sorry but I stoped at the fart demonstration. This argument is irrelevant and poorly reasoned.
People who really suffer from industry plants are those who are in the same artistic level as the industry planted artist. Talented people that do not have the same financial and marketing leverage despite the fact that they can do at least as good music. "bad artists" as portrayed by the fart are not concerned.
An industry plant is often a very good artist, no doubt. BUT it doesn't lessen at all the prejudice of such fucked up industry scheme. The evil is in the fake dreams teenagers endure by thinking the artist is self made. Industry plant also disturb the natural organic growth of artist's notoriety and is an evil corporate manipulation. I find it revolting that you say that it doesn't matter. It does.
I have no fucking clue weather or not she is an industry plant. I in fact appreciate deeply her music and find her lovely as fk.

It doesn’t matter with respect to the validity of the art, which was the point being made. If you’re unaware, many people discount Clairo’s music and won’t even listen to it simply because of “plant” allegations. It does matter with respect to industry inner workings as a whole, which you described. I felt as if going into what you were speaking on was out of scope for this video, and maybe deserving of its own video. Thanks for watching.
