I'm new here and I'm a traditionally published author. Trust me when I say that you do NOT have to have read a ton of books to get a book deal! Vision issues and attention challenges prevented me from that, but I DID have the will of a lion to manifest the right people to help get my story out in book form.
DO NOT believe what so-called experts say (depending what they say). Do it YOUR way and keep thinking outside the box!
    Much love.

I've been experiencing a lot of anxiety over the past couple of months. Panic attacks, intrusive thoughts, overthinking, insomnia, the whole package. I'm getting much better in terms of mind management, but there are a few things I know I need to improve on. I'm a creative. I've been writing my whole life, making music, videos, all of that good stuff. My world was rocked a little recently and it shifted my focus inwards. I like to say my brain went into protection mode like an amplifier does when overdriven. My sole focus has been on this anxiety and the feeling like I'm losing control with the thinking of it all. Before all of this, my sole focus was on my creative endeavours, friends, socialising (trying to), work, love, life, etc. All of that good stuff. After hearing that excerpt towards the end, friend? Shift your focus. Horse on a different, uh, sled. Or, since I'm a lover of the Lord, fix your eyes on the table. Or like, use your powers for good.
The most random video to ever pop up on my feed, but entirely necessary.
Also, the whole input/output thing. Sometimes just the act of the releasing of a thing can be incredibly cathartic.
Okay, peace and love folks. Go out and do the work.

Thank you for posting this video. I’m coming up on a week sober. There was no way I would be able to accomplish anything if I didn’t stop poisoning myself. I have so much to learn. One thing I do know is that I want to be as creative as I can possibly be. I love Rick. It’s great to listen to other artists talk about the process. I like how you talked about understanding and separating my hats. This might sound weird but I do have different sides to myself when it comes to trying to create, it was confusing at first, alcohol made it even more so. At first I didn’t understand that concept. In my mind I was like I’m just one person, just me, that that thinking held me back. I have a multi faceted and colorful personality that I want to naturally flow out through whatever it is I create. There was so much great info in your video Im going to have to watch it again. I was actually taking notes on my note 📝 pad. Nothing but love nothing but respect. Im fascinated by psychology and how the brain works. Im fresh out of detox and plan on going to a meeting tonight. Mental health is my top priority right now. I feel so much better right now. Fogs still lifting somewhat. I have faith. I care about ya’ll. I get overwhelmed sometimes and Rick calms me down simply by saying somethin’ like relax, dedicate 20 minutes, an hour, 5 hours, to what I want to do, focus. I appreciate you all. Nothing but love and respect.

The thing Rick Rubin said around 6:15 really resonated with me, I gotta start not thinking about my music & songs I’m working on when I’m not fully engaged in the process. Too often I’m just “kinda working on music” because I’m doing multiple other things at once since my studio is at home. I really needed this video cause I think my whole life needs more organization, & it’ll reflect in my work.

for “putting on a hat” i came up with the idea that i might try (i have adhd so im constantly putting on multiple hats that prevent me from doing focused work on one thing at a time)
my “hat” can be be represented as a symbol i draw on my hand
drawing a star on my hand before school to represent my growth mindset
drawing a circle before opening my sketchbook to put myself in a creative mindset
drawing a music note on my hand before playing piano to bring out raw music intuition
tldr: drawing a symbol to personify who i want to be for the period of working with intent
its like choosing my video game character with certain strengths and weaknesses to fit my gameplay!

I don’t know if anyone had had an experience as intense as mine, but when I was in the development stage of a project and sourcing ideas and drafting a large mood board in my room, I wanted to force the ideas into my psyche by them being the first thing I saw in the morning when I woke up and the last thing before I went to sleep, it helped but not so much as I was waiting for my “eureka” moment that sadly never came and since it didn’t. I became deeply anxious, slipped into a void of depression because I couldn’t flow like I normally do. Recently I try not to force the process I work with an appreciation and gratitude for the littlest of things, I try to be the process and the art itself. I structured my time and practice and ever since I conformed to a routine(still in development btw) the noise has almost come to a halt and I’m better at silencing it altogether when I notice it bubbling in the back of my mind.
I also pray a lot more now and it’s brought me comfort, I hope this message hel❤ps someone or anyone out there. Peace love and tranquil to all my earthly famile, love yourself and love every little aspect of your growth

For a little while I was putting alot of my poetry up on Instagram but when it started to become more about writing what I thought others might like, it became less about a free flow of self-expression. And that sort of messed me up so I stopped, took a breath, and started writing more for me, expressing my soul's truth. When you simply sit back and listen , just listen to your deeper self bubble up to the surface, THAT is how to let the creative juices flow.

One method I learnt and I am trying out right now is journaling. However journaling in a stream of consciousness way, not thinking specifically about one thing or another, just letting go of all the thoughts floating in my head and capturing them on a page. I feel this can really help your creative side speak and your analytical side listen.

Bro I started producing on garage band which gives you nothing, but the limitation helped me explore ways to make the music interesting at the simplest level.
I basically just chop a sample, loop in some way, add some notes from a synth or a piano or a cello, etc. maybe add simple drums, but it’s created in the vein of my specific sound. I’m not tryna be anyone else, just creating what flows forth from the heart and mind.
It’s so much easier that way than trying to go crazy all the time(which I do on occasion).

There's names that have become peppered throughout the videos (John Frusciante being an example in this one), who have come directly from asking the audience here for tips on who they'd like to see. I went to a dance workshop and the teacher told us that the validation had to start with yourself or else you won’t put your best energy/effort forward because you have already decided it’s not worth it then permeating that feeling around you; i’ve been practicing acceptance on my own understanding it has to seem from my enjoyment that’s what people connect to the real feelings behind it which only comes from accepting my work as it flows until I feel comfortable with sharing the stage it’s at. When we as artists are presenting work it’s never finished we always think it’s can be further tweaked and edited which it can however the presentation of it is like an agreement with our audience that I like this stage of my art right now I want you to see it and enjoy it WITH ME not at the expense of me.

To quote an influential graphic designer of mine, Bernardo Henning: “The worst thing that happened to me as an artist is being a graphic designer”. As a graphic designer myself this profession has destroyed my creativity. I find this video so true, is everything that I need and want to be and I though being a graphic designer would take me closer to being an artist and express myself in a creative way, but it took me the farthest way possible, because working for someone as a graphic designer it’s always about the outcome. Now I hate sitting down and start sketching. It doesn’t feel right, it feels like work, like emptiness. This video gave me a little bit of light tho, so thanks for that. Got some notes, I’ll start applying them.

I agree overthinking in art is a problem, but I have learned how to utilize 'flow' or 'chaos' and just stop thinking altogether when making something. That is pure art. When I am emulating something, that is where the thought comes in. I want something to sound jazzy...I listen to a bunch of jazz and analyze it. Then put it in the flow.

That George Sanders quote gave me that "Wow" expression that only real deep things can do for me. Im really glad this come up on my YT main page, Im an over thinker and for me its who I am, I guess I have to accept it, but now I understand I have to re-direct my energy on to things that I can handle.

I'm glad that quote connected for you - I nearly pulled it out a few times, because I wondered if it was too wordy and people would leave lol, but really glad I didn't. If you enjoyed the quote, I'd recommend the book, or George Saunders also has a fair few interviews on YT also, but yeah, really enjoying the book. Thanks for taking the time to comment and support.

This reminds me of a book I read recently, Don't Feed The Monkey. Overthinking and anxiety are a monkey that becomes difficult to control the more you feed it.

Interesting pattern developing here - I had someone tell me they had read a book about this topic in these comments called 'The Chimp Paradox', and now 'Don't Feed The Monkey'. I checked the Chimp one yesterday and will jump in and take a look at your recommendation now. Thanks for taking the time to drop it, in the past I've picked up books and artist recommendations in comments that have gone directly into my research for this stuff, so very helpful my side.

There’s a book called “the artist way” by Julia Cannon that I read about a year ago and I was able to connect a lots of the content in this video with that book. Thanks for creating and sharing this video with us!🤎🙂

I'm starting to believe every one of us is a creative visionary, it's just a matter of how we apply ourselves and how we shift our reality internally. The more we channel ourselves the more we will stablize. The same goes for the other side; the more we fester on the introspection, the more chaos is displayed outwards. The endless dance of Yin and Yang can either be the most beautiful thing you've ever experienced or the most terrifying concept you've ever rationalized.

Amazing video i dont think im a overly creative person by any means but through my life ive been a really bad overthinker. I pin myself between two walls 1 filled with self doubt and self hate the other with my perception on how others wont dont and cant understand me because im not enough or i cant live up to who i should be for them. Just hearing that im not stupid or crazy because i feel and think that and there can be a way to control and harness it to form a better relationship with my inner self and my perception of life at these times is amazing and i respect you all and the journey you are on.

This was a very exciting and inspiring watch for me. I related to so much of what was said about being extremely open minded and sometimes letting the curiosity and indecision of unlimited possibility stop my creative process in it's tracks. I have become very aware of the dangers of being critical of my compositions during the early stages of their existence, when they are often premature and easiest to criticize. (Perfect way to hit blocks and take joy away from the artistic experience.) In my experience (from a music background), there is always a point in a song or project where the creative process (writing and playing) ends and the analytic process (mixing and arranging) begins. It is in the latter where an over-analytic mind can tear ideas apart and cause destruction. This is where I often struggle. I also agree with what Rick said about listening to a composition too much before it is completed. I need to stop exporting demos apparently lol.
