Thanks, Rick. Lately, I’ve had zero motivation to work on my project, and I couldn’t figure out why. I love the idea, I know it’s valuable, and I was super inspired when I started. Then I realized-I stopped doing it for myself and got too caught up trying to please the "target audience." Funny enough, I ran into the same thing when I started doing art. Trying to create something while worrying about other people’s opinions just killed my motivation and inspiration. So the only way to create a piece of my art is to do what I love, what feels right, and follow my gut. Turns out, that’s exactly what I need to do with my business too. Thanks again! I literally feel so much better realizing this.
I met him twice while living in Malibu, CA. He is very approachable and down to earth, just like in this interview. Very interesting to converse with or just listen to. Maybe one of his greatest strength is that he is a very good listener himself and not full of “how things allegedly should be“ instead open to learn and do things differently.
I always wanted to talk to Rick Rubin about being creative and now I'm so thankful that he is sharing insights into how the Beastie Boys and Eminem were guided by him to create such great music. I'm getting ready again and trying again and hopefully I can succeed this time with some help, luck, hard work, and love. Thanks Mr. Rubin I'm open to listening. Stickers for the world! My friend told me one time, music is about the message. I believe that although it was hard to understand for me being late gen x. The part at the end about how to finish a project is greatbto understand when you're on your own as an artist without a classroom or due date it is a mystery to why I can't finish anything. You nailed it and solved it, thanks! 💎💎 💎💎 💎 💎
Bc of this human gem iam accpeting a new type of sculpture iam working on. It been in my mind for a time and ive never seen anything like it so its mine
I haven’t read anything by the Beastie Boys but that sounds sooooo interesting. I’m obsessed with everything to do with Rick Rubin, he’s so switched on and has a lot of humility- love him
Kendrick, Drake and Rick rubin at shangrila smoking a joint at sunset would be epic. Its one of the highest vibrations- a beautiful view with friends and a doob. Complete contrast of diss tracks
Drake literally doesn’t have the depth to be in a life chat with rick rubin nor Kendrick. That’s the whole point lol that’s why he doesn’t have an interview with him.
So by making music that you want to make without external inspiration from let’s say the top charts or music that is popular, will you end up creating something unique and original? I hear people talking about how music nowadays is repetitive and not original, so how does one break out of that when making music?
Change the approach. You don't have to have an entire track planned when you start. My approach is more natural, but slower: my tracks always start with the beat.. and from there I will get ideas for bass that fit the rhythm. Once the beat and bass are down my head will be swimming with ideas for the harmony and melodies, I just hear them in my head and use whatever instruments I have to get close to those ideas.. et voila ! An original track has been created from little moments of inspiration.
I agree with most of what he's saying, but... if you throw science away and start from scratch, you'll get the same science, not a different one. That's kind of the definition of science. 5:22 ~ish if you're curious about timestamp.
he helps them tap into their own creativity by listening to and trusting his own taste. He guides. And that doesn't take away anything from the original artist because the best things often come from collaboration.
The universe is on the side of creativity. Vouch!
Thank you Rick! Im infinitely glad others think and feel this way....🙌🙏
Love this dude, I've gained so much confidence as an artist listening to him speak

The man. The myth. The legend. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
You had me with the use of "converse" and not "conversate" this one is a peeve. Thank you good sir
Massive Rick fan, I hope one day I have the fortunate opportunity to meet him because his energy and voice are so intoxicating.

I thanks a lot to inspire us and agree about antenna, we look like bringing art to earth by creativity & connection.
Rick Rubin is the man. Always innovative always unique. I always thought he was cool and reading the Beastie Boys book just solidified it.

Experiment with listening to music that is not mainstream, like seeing the fork in the road & just go straight.

He’s the Deepak Chopra of music.
What’s the book he’s referring to?
The Creative Act: A Way of Being
