I think the “don’t listen to other people”, is two sided, and not always the best advice. You can become a much better artist if you listen to OTHER ARTISTS. It can be very valuable to share your ideas with other likeminded people. In the end, if you are serious about your art, you’re going to have to share it some day. But if you want to increase your chances of being successful, I think the better advice is to know how to receive criticism, compliment, and anything in between. I understand your point, but I think maybe you misunderstood Rick’s. I think he meant that during the creation of our art, don’t listen to others, instead listen close to yourself, your deep feelings, spirit, emotions and to allow those elements that arrive from sources beyond ourselves, and our known universe to shine.

This is so true. A couple years ago I started making music I knew had pretty much no commercial potential and no potential for an audience, but it’s what I want to hear and it’s the most fulfilling feeling in the world to make a record you want to hear without worrying if anyone else will like it.

I think the magic in what Rick is saying is that he knows himself and what he is capable of. How many of us can honestly say what our best effort is. This is a very difficult place to get to. That's his great asset.
Honestly I think everyone knows if they’re honest with themselves So technically I think it’d be more apt to say “how many can truly be honest with themselves?” I mean, how difficult is it to know what you’re good at and not good at? You should have a good understanding on that lol Most just don’t wanna be honest about it for whatever reason and ego
At the same time, he's honest about his capabilities, and he doesn't hold back from going at it. I think a lot of people have their standards too high (I'm guilty of this) and then don't go and make the effort to produce whatever is your current level, because you _think_ you should be able to do better. Of course this doesn't pan out well, since you won't take action that would make you better at whatever you're doing, and thus your potential doesn't grow. Thank you for making this video and activate the automatic captions! Im deaf/hard of hearing and i need subtiitles to understand things. Im a big fan of rick rubin and this video was very inspiring! Thank you! Lots love!
Rick Rubin has such interesting perspectives. Most Artists/Producers I've heard so far in interviews say something like that: "a song could alway be better, but you have to stop somewhere". And Rick says "If it could be better, it's not done". I know it's just words, but it just stood out to me, I expected a different answer. I guess it might have to do with how centred, honest and aligned he is with himself. He probably doesn't live with "shouldas, wouldas and couldas" and that comes through in his work. He probably just feels in peace when finishing a project and that's probably also how he knows it's finished. Very interesting.
Art is self expression. Practice is separating the signal (that which you want to communicate) from the noise (that which distracts from your message and should be discarded). Patience is working until what you want to express is coming through the best that you are able. Dedication is not quiting until you cannot say what you want to say any better than you have said it. Talent is when people like what you have to say and skill is when people understand it.
Self-criticism and just being plain hard on yourself is easy. It's much harder to practice self-awareness and acceptance of your own limitations. The best that you can do is all you can do and that is fine.

As somebody who recently started mixing/dj'ing music...this is 100% correct. I enjoy playing for people and making them smile. Seeing people smile while I play music is the best feeling ever. Knowing that I did that for them. But also knowing that MY MUSIC...my tastes...did that for them. At that point we are sharing an experience together at that point. I'm playing what I like, and they also happen to enjoy it as well. I hear people always say "play to the crowd." Fuck that. I play what I want. If you don't like it, you can leave :) If you don't like what i"m playing, then we are not going to share that experience together. But you know....that's 100% Ok. I'm not being hateful. As an artist I'm never going to please everyone. And making that my goal is just silly. My goal is to play the music I like, music that makes me happy. Maybe expose people to something they've never heard before so they get to experience something new. And maybe...just maybe...make a few folks smile along the way.
What percentage of your income relies on your ability to manipulate people toward buying more drinks through intentionally changing the vibe of the room?
Even though I think Rick is a little overrated by others, when he speaks, damn does it resonate with what I also know as a producer and artist...SBN RESONATE
One of the most surprising and admirable things about Rick Rubin is that - despite his records having such a unique sound - he doesn't engineer or play on anything; his sound is purely through his relationship and honouring of the artist.
So the problem with Rubin's idea is that the way people listen to music, or comprehend it, usually isn't the way people write music. That's why there are so many good (and bad) ideas that are put together in a way that doesn't work very well for listeners. You should be aware that what you like doesn't necessarily make it good. So by not having any filters or ideals in shaping a song, you pave the way for self-indulgence. But if you don't care, good luck, I guess it doesn't matter.
This is the first time I've heard of Rick Rubin. What an amazing intellect. I love the advice about how you should make the art for yourself first. After you've done that, hopefully it'll resonate with the audience in general, if not, at least with someone or a few it will. For many this will be an epiphany. We should remember these words while doing our best. Truly inspiring message.
I think this is all true for someone that is happy. If you are depressed or were raised by a perfectionist or many other traumas, I don’t know how well it holds up. Someone that’s depressed or raised wrong will not have confidence to think something is ever good enough. They wonder why they can’t do what they know they should and have no drive to do them. That is a very different picture than this. Now you can fix that depression/trauma and then this is all true but don’t feel like a loser if what I said applies just keep trying and find fulfilling things until you’re happy than the sky is the limit!
@@gatkillah2473 yea that’s what I said lol read the comment. But telling someone that’s currently messed up to stop overthinking is like telling a drug addict to stop doing drugs

Love that!

What percentage of your income relies on your ability to manipulate people toward buying more drinks through intentionally changing the vibe of the room?
My fuckin dawg relate to this incredibly 💭💪💜🏋🏻♀️

I just knew him from Slayer records he produced that blew me away. Now just him talking had the exact same effect! Respect!!! 🙏💯💖🤘

Before watching this:
Rick Rubin, if you can get me to stop overthinking, that will be the best thing you’ve done for me since Blood Sugar Sex Magik.
Your videos are truly helping me on my path. THANK YOU SO MUCH !
Really nobodys gonna say anything about his fucking hair.
There is no words for that
If you don't like his hair, don't watch. I bet you would like his money though and all of his accomplishments.
You have no hair
really appreciate this, always nice to hear some knowledge bombs from Rick Rubin
Its always the Rick Rubin, Albert Einstein people who look homeless with the most intelligence
Even though I think Rick is a little overrated by others, when he speaks, damn does it resonate with what I also know as a producer and artist...SBN RESONATE
Everything Rick says here is clear and wise..overthinking ..as I famously do...is not healthy..and can steal happiness
"Are you living up to your ability?" letting that thought sink in for the day
One of the most surprising and admirable things about Rick Rubin is that - despite his records having such a unique sound - he doesn't engineer or play on anything; his sound is purely through his relationship and honouring of the artist.
He's old school a&r... His talent is his ears, and his nose for a hit!
He played guitar on Beastie boys songs
@@markl5998 That was Kerry King from Slayer
So the problem with Rubin's idea is that the way people listen to music, or comprehend it, usually isn't the way people write music. That's why there are so many good (and bad) ideas that are put together in a way that doesn't work very well for listeners. You should be aware that what you like doesn't necessarily make it good. So by not having any filters or ideals in shaping a song, you pave the way for self-indulgence. But if you don't care, good luck, I guess it doesn't matter.
A truly enlightened person. Well done.
Doing It Stealthy helps me to process my feelings about 9/11.
He made me realize that I often failed because I did things without self-conviction.
Rick Rubin’s Guide To Stop Overthinking:
1. Think
2. Stop
A conversation with this man would change my life
This is the first time I've heard of Rick Rubin.
Now you can fix that depression/trauma and then this is all true but don’t feel like a loser if what I said applies just keep trying and find fulfilling things until you’re happy than the sky is the limit!
no this kinda wisdom is come through a person that has overcome the things your talking about
@@gatkillah2473 yea that’s what I said lol read the comment. But telling someone that’s currently messed up to stop overthinking is like telling a drug addict to stop doing drugs
I'm an overthinker and intend to think even more. It;s who I am. haven't watched but I refuse to dumb down, Thanks, Simon 'Stepford Wife' Bartholomew who hasn't watched past the headlines. Let's all homogenise? Nice! Love Rick though-He's everywhere and everyone's talking about him which is good-You're so visible and getting fame finally from the back end. Let's have a heated debate!👊
Trevor got really wise after the events on Los Santos...
I recall that Michael Shenker (Ufo) said that "he stopped listening guitar players at 16" or something. We get lost listening/watching too much information.
Make it the best it can be
Period! 'Nuff Said✌️😎👍
You'd never think that this is one of the many men out there producing rap music that condones killing, misogyny, drugs, alcohol, guns, etc.; all for the sake of keeping prisons full, purely for profits from prison stock investments. Funny how 'evil' can take the shape of such a "perfectly-put-together" man.
No credit to Lex Fridman?
'art doesn't come in a quarterly way'. . . perfect
Wonderful. This kinda validates what I’ve been doing (for me). Thanks Rick. 🤘
The same bottle of water that costs $0.50 in a gas station will cost $1.00 at a store, $3.00 at a theater, and $6.00 at a concert. Sometimes it's not you - it's your surroundings that are adding or diminishing the value of your creative work.

I do not know why some posters title their posts with a title that has NOTHING to do with the video…’how to stop overthinking’? If anything, this is about how to think MORE.
Yoo when I say that I am incredibly grateful for this channel, I mean that with my whole heart. I’ve found motivation and confidence time after time. Thank you for the work that you do !
Rick's got mad antennas
Rick Rubin is a special human
Great advice, but I don't think he always does things this way.
Black Sabbath said they were pretty frustrated with Rick in the studio.
Lots of Artists. He also uses other no name producers to do a bulk of the work now. He will show up briefly, bark a few orders, then dissapear for his minions to do all the work. . .
Rick is one of those people who’s advice is priceless.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
