Rick Ruben = a warm blanket
Pharrell = the cool side of the pillow
Wooo😯 This was perfect.
HA! Man, perfect analysis!

I like how you didn't say hot side of the pillow for Rick Rubin cause that shits uncomfortable
Pharrell looks like the final evolution of Jaden Smith
yooo that's what I've been thinking about for a long time

Jermaine Magandazi lol right!
😂 no seriously
Mind blown cause Yes!
Rick is a musical therapist for Pharrell. This whole interview is Pharrell just talking and Rick asking how he feels about it.
did you even watch more than five minutes of the video?
I love how Rick Rubin is having Pharell break down step by step his process. Then Rick reflects the parts that stand out. Pharell is basically hearing himself being spoken back at him so he can break down his process further. Rick helps the artist take apart their process to increase their self awareness of their self. He breaks it down with the artist down to a grain of sand just by reflecting them and being curious.

I love the silences. No anxiety. Just love of life and music.
Except for that lawn mower
I love that the GQ editors/producers left in all the silent spaces instead of filling the video with sound bites and quick edits. Well done!!

These interviews always take me so long to get through because I have to pause every time they mention a record to go back and listen to each one to give it context.
Truth
Pharrell is deep, and Rick gave him the space and time to articulate his thoughts.
Great conversation.
Rick Ruben would be great as a therapist. His voice, his patience, his history, his knowledge, his questions, his patience. Such a warm soul
Jordan Pass true story... he is a form of therapist
You forgot his patience
Don’t forget his patients
you said patients two times
His interview with Andre 3k is proof of this. There are parts of it that legit sound like a therapy session
You see how Rick is so patient. When there is a silence he doesn't interject to fill the silence all the time. He lets the other person think and get more deep with the conversation.
Probably what makes him so successful in his life purpose. And how he's held space for so many great artists to create over the years
Yes
It's because he is reading the body language and facial expressions. He takes all movement as communication, not just verbal. Greatness.
A conversation, by definition, involves back and forth verbal communication. A reciprocal interest and dialogue. This was a self absorbed monologue, not a conversation.
@@mattwkendall I think it was an interview really. And that's how interviews are structured.
He basically is a therapist when working with artists it seems. Part therapist, part producer, part mirror, part friend. His level of wisdom, zen and joy is so infectious, it makes you want to smoke whatever it is that he's smoking, so to speak.
The connection Pharrell has with himself and with the universe is a delight to see. Whenever he speaks of his past you can almost see him holding the thread of his thought and traveling down each channel, each tunnel, arriving at places he was was, re-living the feelings, seeing the views as if the moment is there. It's not a surprise that his creations and the creations he's involved in are able to touch a wide range of people, regardless of their language/experiences/beliefs. What an inspiring brain. I feel very lucky to have been able to experience this conversation, even as just a spectator.
You couldn't have said it any better.
Cringe
This made me emotional hahah. to have people like you recognozie people like him is what people like him dream of.

@@BeatsbyBlanch they are nothing without the consumer, and they acknowledge that fact. Yes, they are amazing at what they do, but if no one buys it, they're just like every other starving artist. Definitely caught me off guard… that’s when I KNEW this would be a good conversation. Especially when he talked about the elevator… so 🔥
Watching Pharrell makes me remember the early to mid 2000's era where it seemed like every other song was produced by the Neptunes. I absolutely love that era.
And actually every single song was produced by the Neptunes
Ah yes, with every other song being produced by Timbaland. Good times. 😊

As someone who deeply appreciates deep conversations and the level of communication that two are able to accomplish, this interview was a masterclass in mutual understanding and comprehension. I was in shock many times, just riding the emotional wave Rick and Pharrell were riding. Awesome stuff.
Rick''s voice is like being recorded by a condenser mic, so clean, and bassy at the same time, I'm very curious to know how did they recorded this interview.

Yes!!! That’s literally catching the Holy Ghost of divine musical creation and Pharrell is definitely anointed. 🔥🕊
Remember Mike said somethin really similar! He said he doesn’t create. God gives him his music and he just allows it to flow through him!
I remember hearing this when it first came out way before I started creating my own music. It almost sounded too spiritual for me to comprehend. As I’ve gotten into producing myself, I’ve only then started to fully understand the state of mind they’re projecting in the discussion. Music hits deeper when you create and then you start to look at it in different abstract ways. The evolution of your art is really something to admire and not take for granted through your journey. Always trust the process.

Rubin is like a free floating therapy spirit. How timeless this interview becomes in parts is fantastic. btw Pharrell turns 50 next year.
The moment when you realize asking the right questions is WAYYY more important than the answers.
Rick Ruben looks like a teacher that's so proud of his student graduating and getting a good job.

In a way he really is. Good thought!
The fact that Pharrell, 1 of the greatest producers EVER, said that 60% of the time artists don’t listen to his direction is both mind boggling & reassuring at the same time.
Paulo Nino probably because he so ahead of this time that most artists look at it as taking to much of a risk.
Man you ain't lyin Paulo Nino. It's an older video up of Pharrell creating a track for Natasha Ramos (I might've spelled her first name wrong). But point is, most of the video, he is creating and Ramos is on her phone doin whatever didn't matter for the time.

What even Pharrell and the production team of this beautiful interview don't realize is that Rick Rubin is actually producing this interview in his selfless, ever-curious way right there in the moment. He can't help it. Like, Pharrell talks about a lot of conceptualized stuff in the beginning, but Rick is actually employing all of these concepts there, in the moment, like he was Pharrell's producer. It seems like he has quietly, humbly internalized and perfected all the concepts Pharrell is still exploring. What a gift for mankind

What an amazing interviewer, he leads, but takes Pharrell on an inner journey... which results not just in answers to the questions, but you can see Pharrell being taken back to relive those feelings and moments as if they were the present.
"Chords are coordinates" really just makes sense to me. Depending on who you and what you've experienced and where we are in our life. man, Rick Rubin has the smoothest voice ever
I was talking to a coworker about how much hip hop affected me when it came out, and he doesn't understand that hip hop was ever underground. He was born in 1998. When I first heard hip hop it was on cassettes that were traded by hand. We often didn't even know who the artists were, we just knew the songs.
Access to music has increased exponentially. It’s so simple now they can’t imagine . I would hear hip hop in the 70’s in NYC around neighborhoods, but the first time hearing Rappers Delight on the radio was a game changer 😳
JMFS so underground Shazam wouldn’t even know
Being married to a producer, I totally get everything Pharell is saying. My husband has literally frozen in the middle of the grocery store and went, "Babe, get your phone Shazaam this right now!" LOL. It's funny when we listen to new songs, I listen to the whole song in general, and as a person who loves to sing, pay attention to the lyrics. He, on the other hand, will listen to every instrument in the composition. He'll be like, "ooooh, you hear that triangle right there" And I'm like, "what? no." Lol.
Lmao I'm both of you. I have to listen to the song like 3 times because the first time I listen to the instruments and all that, the 2nd time the lyrics and I sing, and the 3rd time I listen to it as a whole
ooo it shot an arrow through my heart can’t wait to have a girl that gets the music like I do 🤗🤍👩🏻🦱
