I love how Silent Hill, Alone in the Dark and Alan Wake are becoming more like the Resident Evil Remakes

If you like RE remakes it's great, if not, probably feels like it's ruining gaming a bit. At least for me, I don't mind because I love all the remake gameplay.

I feel that's a plus. Take what works and implement it well, but don't be afraid to innovate. The Last of Us took RE's crafting system in a different direction, for example. Dead Space implemented the over-the-shoulder mechanic while basing itself in a completely different setting. Arkham Asylum's free flow combat influenced other franchises such as Assassin's Creed, little surprise that Brotherhood implemented free flow when Arkham Asylum had released the year before and was well received by audiences. Capcom clearly borrowed some elements from The Last of Us for their remakes, such as the quick weapon selection UI. They didn't have that in their previous games. I am in favour of developers borrowing from each other; it's not a bad thing. It's like genres being appropriated by different creators. There's always a unique way to put your spin on things while conforming to genre tropes.

It really is copying REmake games:
The over the shoulder perspective, the puzzle putting cylinders to panels, Break Room aka Safe Room, Inventory management, having two characters with different playthroughs.
The original AW copied Silent Hill, now that REmakes are the rage, they started copying it.

Do you think it's fine that they're taking concepts from other games to make theirs better?

@@hittobox they should have not make it too obvious, at least be your own thing

To clarify, the title is clickbait and should say, takes inspiration from RE. The game's Director even openly admitted to taking inspiration from Resident Evil. Source: gamerant.com/alan-wake-2-resident-evil-inspiration/ With that said, AW is a great series I definitely recommend, the point of the video is to show gamers that enjoy game's like the REmakes that there are other similar style games they may also enjoy. *Also when I mention comparison of flashlights in the video, it's about design and position on screen, NOT gameplay mechanic which is extremely different. Thanks for stopping by and watching!

I haven't played a great deal of Alan Wake 2, but its identity as a video game seems all over the map. The Mind Palace thing seems to be copying Sherlock Holmes while the gunplay and general mechanics of movement were inspired from RE2R/RE3R/RE4R.
I can tell this game is set in the same universe as Control (2019), although I think Control is a much better game overall since Jess is pretty damn OP. I don't find Alan Wake 2 as fun as RE4R; I think it's a more cinematic game like The Last of Us, which isn't a bad thing, but it does mean that gun fights are often watered down because your character is pretty damn vulnerable to enemies.
However, Capcom has clearly established a trend for survival horror/action horror remakes, so I am still awaiting Silent Hill 2 to see how it pairs against RE2R.

Thanks for sharing your take on it. I'd be curious if that remains true after you finish it. Seems like their goal for AW2 was to have great narrative and take what works really well in other games to try to make a really solid game. That probably worked pretty well for them. If they used the gameplay mechanics from the original and release it today, we probably aren't talking about it being anything beyond a good story and nothing more.
Silent Hill 2 looks fantastic from what we've seen, which isn't much. Have high hopes for that as well. Post Trauma looks like it could be another great game in the same vein as RE4R/AW2.

@@hittobox When it comes to horror games, I think there's really only been a couple of ways to implement it well. Survival horror or action horror. Alan Wake 2 seems to be in medias res for this. You've got the same sense of resource management as a classic Resident Evil game, but you're also expected to defend yourself from enemies RE4/R style.
Frankly, I find myself to be rather underpowered compared to Control, which pushes for a more action horror tone. I like the mechanic of using a flashlight to stun enemies, as I haven't seen anything like that in a Resident Evil game or in Dead Space. My expectations so far is that I expect my arsenal to develop further because right now I feel incredibly vulnerable.
Overall, I think it's a good game, but not as fun as RE4R or the Dead Space Remake.
