- We did not expect this to happen at all..
After about 10 days in the woodlands of Bialowieza photographing bisons and the beautiful landscapes we had almost given up on photographing these amazing animals in snow. But then as we were relaxing in the forest, making time lapses and flying with the drone, they suddenly arrived.

I am spending 10 days in the Bialowieza forest in Poland and it is going to be all about wildlife photography. The main reason to come here is to photograph the wild bisons but also to do some landscape photography - and of course to spend some amazing days in the wilderness with my good friend Simon.

🇵🇱🇵🇱🇵🇱 Polska jest piękna!
Every time I see your pictures or video, I feel so peaceful and calm.
So true.
I agree 100%. His videos are inspiring, but the time lapse of the snow falling on the tree is really fantastic.
Thanks Simon and Morten.
I know it's cliché to say that someone is an inspiration for something, but experiences like this is really what got me into wildlife photography, and spending more time outdoors. Thank you Mr Hilmer!
Cliche or not - This is am fantastic compliment and I really appreciate. Thanks a lot Sebastian.
I live in southern Spain, love photographing ,wildlife here, you cannot explain what a thrill when you capture great photo, to other people, it's such a buzz!!
I was telling my wife about your Poland trip to see bison in the forest. So great to see this today. I live in Nashville tn and many of the roads here were originally buffalo trails. But seeing them in the woods is totally not a part of living memory. As they were almost slaughtered to extinction by idiots. And growing up I only saw them in the movies as giant herds on the plains. So it’s great to see them living and moving through a forest as it was here two hundred years ago. Thanks for doing what you do so well, Morten.
Joe since you live in Nashville, when we are all able to travel again suggest you take a trip up across the border to Land Between The Lakes in Kentucky where they have the Elk and Bison Prairie just outside Golden Pond.
TheGuitarsadist great idea. One more for the bucket.
I would have loved if they had not been shot down back then. It must be an absolutely unforgettable experience to see so many bison /buffalo on these plains. Thanks so much for your kind words - I hope you will find a great location to photograph these amazing creatures in woodland 👍👍👍
@@joeiscoffee If I recall right it is like $5 for the day and there is a loop of 4 miles or so that you drive you own car around( easy to just go very very slow which is recommended-normally very little traffic). Bison pretty much can be seen most of the day, though sometimes they are well hidden in the trees, the Elk are more than likely seen around sunrise and later afternoon in to dusk. If you go save the receipt for if you see nothing the first time you drive the loop, you can go explore some more the LBTL and then come back later in the day to see if you catch them then. If I recall right pretty decent size herds of Bison and quite a few Elks (even got a award winning photo from there on a big bull elk a few years ago). Be careful with the Bison, do not get out of the car for they can quickly become dangerous especially when mating season. Elk seem to be a little more laid back, been with 50 feet of them with no issue (though car was right by me).
Polish bison is a cousin of North American one and the herds roaming now free in different parts of Poland are reconstructed from 55 animals left in ZOOs after great slaughter by Prussians during WWI and after the end of WWII. The main herd is in Białowieża Forest, but there is a healthy group in Bieszczady Mountain (Stuposiany Forest) and another in Knyszyn Forest, another in Borecka Forest and smaller one in Piska Forest. There are still small groups of different blood lineage kept separated and bred to guarantee possibility of rebuilding the herd in case of some virus disaster and Białowieża is not the only place they can be seen in so called "demonstration bison enclosure
". This is the most successful reintroduction of almost extinct species in Europe. 3 years ago there was a male that went through 150 km in Poland and was a national celebrity, people were taking pictures when he stopped in their cities or villages, he was very calm and seemed to like people and just went West all the time. So he earned nickname Wanderer and nobody thought to disturb him. But alas poor thing, was shot immediately after crossing border river with Germany, Odra, by a proud German hunter. Here you can read an article about it - it caused shock in Poland and confirmed what we know about Germans. translate.google.com/translate?sl=pl&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwiadomosci.wp.pl%2Fodstrzal-polskiego-zubra-w-niemczech-to-rozpetalo-kryzys-polityczny-6173447222994561a In Polish these animals are called żubry (singular: żubr) and were smaller cousins of extinct in XVII century mighty forest aurochs - in Polish tur - first animal strictly protected in Europe by king's edict and driven to extinction by cattle induced sickness. They were grazing in the meadows near the forest, so to preserve them King forbade the cattle grazing at the same spots to avoid indirect contact with them, but he was not headed and small herd of aurochs was getting smaller by each year and finally last cow broke both legs when trying to jump over the fence and had to be put down in 1627... Stay healthy :)

Wow!thanks Morten and Simon for this wonderful video..next time again...
I cried when the bison looked into the camera.
it is "Żubr", bisons live in America
Thank you Morten for bringing these beautys to our screens and showing what nature is all about‼
Another great series. Thanks Morten. Hope you are getting home OK.
Hahaha, yes that's what bison do, they walk very quietly through the forest and surprise you. How lucky that the snow was just there. I have often experienced the same in Poland when visiting the bison. It is and always will be a fantastic experience. Keep going Morten it is fantastic what you show.
Thanks a lot Ron. Yeah they are like ghosts..
@@MortenHilmer Every time I am surprised how they appear out of nowhere, but even better, because now you see them, how they dissolve in the forest when they walk away from you again. And how the female leaders give protection by walking behind and stopping every now and then and giving you a look.
Como siempre,que grande
What an experiance!
beauty, tenderness, friendship. Thank you very much morten
Breathtaking video Morten! This is so wonderful it nearly stopped my heart. Thanks again.
the photographs of the bison are all very beautiful, but my favorites are those of the trees, from the tenth to the eleventh minute ..... really amazing, they look like paintings.....great Morten !!!
It must have been such an emotional moment. Beautiful creatures. It’s so important to appreciate these beasts in our lifetime as they may not be around in the future. Everything becomes so much more meaningful when you realise the impermanence of things big and small.
Hey Morten, thanks for another great video, I hope you and your family are staying safe and healthy. 👍

This video is exactly what I needed, so thank you Morten :) You got really lucky with the snowfall there, as it made everything look that tiny bit more magical :D What amazing creatures these bison. And Simon's timelapse looked great!
Yeah this was almost too good to be true. Went out to just make a timelapse and ended up with bison in snowfall - what more could you wish for 😊😊😊
I could watch this all day! So cool that you got the pictures you wanted, even if it was in the last hours of your trip. It ain’t over, till it is over.
THANK YOU Morten fore the beautiful images, video and foto's.
Great video Morten!! Look so forward to your videos!!👍
Fantastic. The time lapse of the log, for some reason, that little leaf dancing around really makes it for me. :)
your perseverance of going to same place and seeing things differently... flexibility of not shying away from taking landscapes as well other than just wildlife, makes me go outdoors and explore...you inspire many guys like me...
Thank you so much for your kind words 🙏
Absolutely beautiful work Morten and colleagues.
Snow falked Bison, always excellent, thank you, Morten, thank you, Simon :)
one of the things I love about your videos is how you kind of just let the camera roll, you don't try to be in every frame like other vloggers, you just let us all feel like we are there with you. thank you for what you do
Stuck indoors and this video reminded me of moments outdoors when you run into wildlife and time just seems to stop. Thanks.

Amazing.
Simply awesome and gorgeous!
Patience, optimism and perseverance personified - together with the good humour to laugh in the face of adversity. Bravo 👏👏👏👌😉
Morten, Another again a Great Wildlife Photographer Video from you. Thanks so much to Sharing with your RUclips Community!.
So beautiful... and the stillness and peace you put into your videos help us viewers to enjoy what you feel, a little bit. Photographers who can’t stop talking and put themselves in the spotlights all the time, don’t know what it’s really about. Your videos make me long to go out again, more and more. I come from the Netherlands but live in the Rocky Mountains now. High altitude makes it hard to breath and hike, but I am getting there. See you out there!!
Beautiful!
Amazingly beautiful...yet again!!
What an amazing experience that must of been, the photos and timelapse at the end made me feel emotional they were beautiful.great video as usual.📷📷👍👍
So amazing whilelife photography u are inspiring all of us
Morten, stunning once again. I share your joy!
magnificent beasts, a beautiful encounter
They are so cute and calm. The rain just completely puts the cherry on top and they may be massive animals, but look at how lovable they are🥰 I would love to meet them at some point and just feel their presence. People often times fear big animals like these big guys, but Morten it really seemed like you and your friend Simon was put to rest by Mother Nature herself, in a sense of safety, comfort and wonder. I hope everyone gets through these virus times with a big smile 😊 See you out there😇
Magical and heart-warming, what the world needs right now.
Amazing, that moment when what you envisioned come into view. Great job as always Morten. One of the finest qualities or your video work is the excitement you convey to the audience. You can’t fake that. Thank you.
Thank you so much Scott I really appreciate your kind words and your encouraging feedback 🙏🙏
