For me it was a no-brainer. I bought it recently because it’s such a versatile focal and aperture range. It’s been almost entirely on my camera, even despite its heft. It’s big, it’s heavy but somehow it doesn’t feel like that while I’m using it. Superb offering from Tamron!

As a sports shooter, this lens is very interesting. It's about perfect for basketball shot from the baseline. Usually a 24-70, and 70-200 are used ideally on 2 separate bodies, but this covers the majority of that range.

As a filmmaker, this looks like a great lens. Starting from 35mm in full frame going up to 150mm, with f/2 to f/2.8, sounds like a great range to work with. When I had the GH5, I shot with the 12-60mm f/2.8 on an entire feature film. Not once did I change lenses. Now I'm shooting with full frame Sony cameras, and this Tamron lens looks fantastic. It's definitely pricey at the moment, but, it's going on my B&H wishlist for now.

Man, I think this is an insanely killer lens and ALMOST would replace my Sigma 24-70 & 70-180. I just use the wide end of the 24-70 more than I think and I know I’d regret not having it. If Tamron or Sigma made a 14-24 f/2-2.8 or f/2.8 that can be used with 82mm filters for less than $1200, it might be worth checking out.

This is my first real zoom lens and it's a revelation. The weight is even contributing to the stability when doing video pull-ins & outs, it stabilizes the camera when handheld, but maybe that's just me. The most important part is that this is now a perfect solution for my live music and event photography. I've just got it so I only did a couple of hours of photo shooting, it's just great. Superb AF, smooth zooming ring (yes, a bit stiff but I'm OK) and yepp, the flares are an issue. However, _everything_ else on this lens is just superb. I've never owned a 24-70 or 28-75, no 70-200 so I cannot compare, but I can relate to it by watching my photo bag now. Instead of several other primes, I'm now packing a Tamron and a Sigma 16mm f1.4 (in crop mode aprox 22mm) paired with my trusty A7III, and that's it. Practicing smart framing with the Sigma without the need to crop more in edit, this is such a great combo. The purchase of this Tamron did delay significantly the planned acquisition of an FX-3, but hey, I'll be making money on the way and get it definitely faster. Btw, thank you for that other video on the Tamron app to configure the custom buttons on this lens..

I have this lens and so far I love it. For the first time in ages I traveled with one lens instead of a backpack full of lenses. That said, if I'm shooting portraits or other specialized photos I prefer my primes, but for generalized photography this lens does it all. I'm shooting mostly using the A1 so if I need more reach I can easily switch to crop mode and get 225mm which negates the need for a 70-200. Also, if I need wider I could always bring my small 20 mm 1.8. Between those two lenses I've got pretty much most of the focal lengths covered except for wildlife. I don't mind the size at all and while pricey, you could replace a whole bunch of lenses with just this one. It is very sharp and the colors are great. Thumbs up on this lens

Seems like it would be a nice lens to have for event photography especially.
Event photography is hard with just one body, since you feel like you need a 24-70 in some situations and 70-200 in others. But for a lot of events I think this would be perfect and it could save you from having two bodies around your neck all day.

From the Nikon version: it’s bigger than the 24-70 f2.8 and seems to replace both that and the 70-200. It isn’t all of it, but plenty good.
The buttons can be programmed to use camera functions, just like on the 2.8 zooms, BUT
that 3 position switch gives you added functions. There is an Astro option where it automatically focuses to infinity and disables autofocus so you don’t meet up. Brilliant. You can also set dedicated focus points and toggle between them.

I'm transitioning from µ4/3 to full frame and decided to start with the A7 IV and this lens. As someone who's starting a Sony kit, this lens sounds like a no brainer! I'm probably going to invest in the 16-35 GM to complement the wide end, and a Sigma 85mm f/1.4 for portraits. And I'll wait a bit to see if I need anything with more reach for wildlife, but honestly I think I might stop at these 3 lenses!

Seems like the best possible set-up for 3 lenses with portraits/events/everyday shooting! For wildlife check out the Sony 200-600 and the Tamron 150-500. Tamron costs less and would provide an even transition from this lens, but does have 100mm less reach, which I think is a disadvantage.

Keep in mind with the higher MP A7 cameras, you can set a custom button to Super 35mm mode and then get another 50% zoom out of your lenses. For action shots that is pretty important it stays on the subject when zooming.. I have NEVER had so many unsharp on my A1.. It's by far worst at the small turn from 150 to 135.. That little turn makes the autofokus jump like crazy.. I had to refocus ALL my shots on a bikerace where my old 85/1.4GM had no problems and my 200-600 also no problems.. If that is normal by Tamron, it's OUT for me.. And I will go for the 70-200(though missing the wide area)

This lens replaced my RF 70-200 f/2.8 and the camera it mounted to - I switched to Sony specifically for this lens. Canon has shot themselves in the foot as far as I'm concerned, by locking down aftermarket RF glass like they have.
I've mostly been shooting roller derby with it because that's the majority of my photography these days, but I'll also be using it for family sessions, events, martial arts tournaments, etc.
On the a7RIV I got to put it on, even the APS-C mode at 26mp is a step up from the R6's 20, and the crop factor makes this a 52-225. It's a win/win for me.

I have 2 18-200s and a 28-270 (I think). I personally love having to carry only one lens to do everything for most of my photography. I have a Sony a7r3 now with lenses that cover 12-400, but it would be great to have this and only carry it. The 12 and 14 are specifically for Milky Way and Aurora, so I don't carry them for other stuff. Now I'm thinking about this one. You can tell it's a great lens when you have very few available on the used market. People are holding on to them.
It's a little short for wildlife so I'll probably get the 70-180 for now and a 50-400 or something similar after that. The 35-150 is still a versatile walking around lens so at some point I wouldn't rule it out. I'm new to Sony so I'm carefully acquiring my glass and watching a lot of reviews. Thanks for yours!

So, I’m in the process of evaluating various lenses that I can use when I travel for both landscape and possibly wildlife. I was set on the Sigma 24-70 Art and another zoom lens…then I ran across this. This completely changed my thinking…I’m 87% sure I’m going this direction.
Rookie question here….can the lens flair be reduced with a filter???

Been eyeing this lens since it was announced and finally found one in stock at a camera shop so I placed the order, gonna be selling the Tamron 28-200 and a few primes to recoup some of the cost but this lens with the A7 IV and a Sony 20mm 1.8 in my bag sounds like the perfect street/travel kit and should fit what I like to do very well.

  • @Martin-nu6ym

Since I have this lens, this is what I have decided. Pairs well with the 20 G or the 16-35 GM and will be replacing the 24-105 G. Will it replace the 24-70 GM - no, I will sometimes want 20 fps with the A1 and I like the smaller and lighter weight for those times that I don't need the 35-150 range. Will it replace the 70-200 GM - no, the GM II will be replacing the old GM. With the 1.4x TC, that gives me 100-280 f/4 which I sometimes require and like the 24-70 GM, sometimes I want the 20 fps. And for those times, I don't need the 16-35 I can pair up the 24-70 GM with the 70-200 GM II.
I am amazed at the quality of images I'm getting out the lens - it is quite stunning for an f/2-f/2.8 zoom. Now if Sony comes out with a 28-70 f/2, well I don't know what I will do. :p

Dunna for the win! Great video man! I am so stuck. Im sure you get this a lot but I need your help. I just got an FX3. My first lense was the 24mm 1.4 GM. its amazing! Now I only have 1000...maybe a bit more to spend. I need a good all around lense to take with me on trips and in "run and gun" situations. I make travel videos and food reviews on my second channel. I also love taking photos as a hobby. I use an A6400 and have all of the good apsc lenses. I have 2 questions for you:
    1. If you had an FX3 with 24mm GM and could get one more lense, which would it be? (budget 1-2K max)
    2. Would you ever consider using an apsc lense on the FX3 (I have 10-18, 18-105, 16, 55, 17-70)
-using the camera in crop mode reduces the pixels.....would that be enough to stay away from these on a FF cameraand just save money for a Full-Frame lense? Considering that my apsc tamron 17-70mm turns into like a 25-105 on my FX3.....and it has 2.8 and stabilization......should I still save for a full-frame lense?

Would love to see this lens used in a more active or music video perspective rather than just slow mo shots. Like really dive into its use with movement and performance. Walking shots, talking shots with handheld movement, testing the auto focus and continuous focus. Anyone can make stuff look "cinematic" with slo-mo pans, tripod shots, while using a good color grade. I would say poor video example, but good review overall. However, most people don't use these lenses to just do fully slow motion travel-esque videos. Also, these all-around lenses from tamron have been bought by a lot of small budget freelance directors, so you're missing an entire audience with that one.

@@dunnadidit 24 and 35mm is not a very high jump in range... At least it wont let you change the lens usually, but the 150 Vs the 200.. That could make the difference. Although I was unsure about the price of this lens I went ahead and picked it up and can say that it has not let me down. Colors, sharpness, and contrast are pretty incredible on a single lens with this much versatility. Asides from lens flare, the one thing that has disappointed me is that the setting for linear and nonlinear is a global setting. Then again this is more choice that you’ll get with any other lens at this point.
