@@TheAudave That he does. Of course, the Phoenix has new portals, tons of clearance, a 2-speed, dig and selectable overdrive. In my mind, the TRX4 did extremely well, with a single speed and no dig (upgrades aside). Oh, and I own the Ultra so, not a Traxxas fan boy 👍
Because you don't need the most expensive rig to be a capable crawler. Just like in the real world man, used to out wheel guy's in their $100K trucks in my '83 Yota and lemme tell ya they got pissed!
Good stuff! The Sport is my first crawler. Was always more of a basher guy and honestly enjoy crawling much more than I expected. Think the Phoenix portal will be my next. Really like all the silly tricks it has and I think it looks killer! Btw, most crawling channels are a bit on the boring side to watch. You do a great job here though. I think I learn as much about technique as I do the trucks. Plus your scenery just can’t be beat! Keep up the good work!
I added the T-lock kit to my sport and it really opened its capability up. Using the locked front and open rear acts like a dig in a lot of situations. With overdrive the steering is a little tighter too.
I have had the same problem in the past. When adding weight and Brass spacers and so on... the stock plastic panhard bracket will Flex and affect your steering range horribly. A high-power Servo makes it even worse. I bought alloy front shock hoops with a built on panhard bracket. This resolved the issue. Not to mention if your truck is taking a hard fall it often will crack panhard bracket, creating massive understeer. Hope this helps somebody out😊
After watching all of your TRX-4 Sport videos, I kinda want one now……also makes me want to put a stock front ring and pinion into the Telluride I modified for trail/crawling work and leave the brushed Stampede 4x4 gears I swapped in it 7 years ago to see how much better that would work.
The Startup of the tekin system looks pretty rough, especially with a 9 tooth pinion. Stock is a 15 and with my Castle it starts moving very smooth. Also the axial tires are not very competitive, dont you think?
Great video Logan, as always very informative and entertaining. With all the extra functions of the Phoenix i was a little surprised that it didn't do better. Go Traxxas.
Nice shoot out. Really enjoy the channel. The Vanquish has a long list of tricks but for a 499 kit that can handle the same run as a trx4 sport . I have to give the TRX4 a huge 👍. It's totally capable rig and is still o e of the top crawlers just for price to performance . Vanquish is still awesome though just need to decide witch of my kids really don't need to go to college the I'm getting mine. 🙃
I agree and feel that was the point of the comparison. $369 vs $900ish (with upgrades / electronics) and still not a decisive victory. It’s a cool rig for certain…is it cool enough for your hard earned $ is the question. Very cool comparison 👍
Are we forgetting this is a heavily modified TRX4? Bigger tires, forklift upgrade of all electronics, body cut, items removed etc. If the Vanquish had larger tires, it would be game over. This "battle" came down to driver error. (No offense my man.) I do think the TRX4 is a very competent truck, I just wish TraxASS would come into the new age with their electronics! I don't think it's right to have to buy a $400-500 rig and know right away you have to ditch the ESC and Servo bare minimum.
That dig setup is awesome but both of my TRX-4s can accomplish "almost" the same result by unlocking both diffs while turning. I want a Phoenix though, not gonna lie..
Love the channel and this video. Next time you compare 2 trucks you might think about using the same set of wheels and tires on both. Will make it easier to pick a clear winner.
But this is how I set each truck up. The Phoenix needs the firmer tire and the Traxxas the softer. Each gets an advantage with a specific combo. I’m not really trying to say either is better here. Mostly showing the differences and having fun
Thanks for the comparison. Great to see someone doing different hop ups to what works best with each crawler. Wish I had the terrain you have. I'm in the Ohio Valley. Lose, wet and shell stone here.
I love all your videos. They have loads of information and opinions in them. Have you ever thought about running the chest mount for your go pro so you could utilize both hands for when you need to use rear steer or better control? Either way great content.
I'm debating between a TRX sport or a slash ultimate, totally different I know but I've never had either. There is a used slash ultimate 4x4 with extras for $250 or a TRX sport, new with aftermarket wheels and upgrades for $350. What would yall get?
Awesome shootout! I really liked this video when you compare the TRX4 vs Pheonix. I think this is the comparison in many people’s minds. I wouldn’t mind another. Nice work man! Keep it up! 👍👍
I have a TRX4 Sport that I built from the kit. I've added a little brass (outer portal covers and caster blocks up front). I hacked the roof rack which made a big difference and I raised the bumpers and think I'll raise the side rails. Now I'm wondering about over/underdrive gears. Wondering if I should do both for a max 27%. I really only crawl. My trailing is just getting the truck to the crawl spot. The Phoenix looks cool as an all rounder and that dig is really cool. I might have to get me one.
How do you make the decision of OD in the front or UD in the rear? I don’t want to get both right off (if ever), so trying to figure out how to choose…
Depends if you want the truck slower or faster. For a stock Capra underdrive is better. For a 10.2 or similar overdrive is fine. Doesn’t really matter either way
Nice comparison. For the money I’d take the Traxxas! I had a feeling it would do better but that dig feature on the Phoenix is awesome. Maybe go bigger tires & high clearance links on the Phoenix it’s just dragging to much. The Phoenix seems like more of a trail truck with crawler type features like the dig & seems to be in the middle of no man’s land. None the less it’s awesome. It was going to be my next RC but I don’t have a buggy in my collection & after seeing the new Capra in action I got one & it’s coming tomorrow so I’m pretty happy right now & can’t wait to get some time on it. Love all the videos though keep up the good work I’m always looking forward to seeing your channel & videos. Defense one of my top 3 channels.
Many thanks! Yeah the Phoenix has all the tools I want but comes at the cost of weight which holds it back. The more stripped down TRX4 lacking features and excess weight can keep up with the Phoenix it’s an interesting fight for sure.
Living in one of the most flat countries in the world this place is crawler heaven! Over here building a artificial course is about the only option for real crawling 😢 Nice comparison. Have fun
Awesome vid man! I know it’s not your typical video but I was wondering if you could do a maintenance video for the trx4 or any of your RC’s. Like what grease you use and after run routine. Video would be awesome or a dm lol
Interesting test and also interesting to see you using the scx 10:3 tires, I just can't get them to work for me but it seems you've almost worn out yours
Great Vid - love your loaction!! You're at a disadvantage using your controller single handed. Would like to see the next one with go pro/iphone controller mount to allow you more concentration haha. I have a Sport with a Homes SVH800 and mini 4s pack right up front running it, plus a HH Crawlmaster Sport 8T/ HW 1080p - relatively cheap mods make the Sport quite capable. The Phoenix is a puzzle to be solved!
Cool video Logan, I'm interested to know being an Aussie and our prices are jacked up here but would you have about the same in money in both trucks if they had the same motor/esc and steering servo? I thought they'd be close without the more pricey Tekin gear.. Cheers mate 👍
New subscriber here! Even though the portal had more functionality than the sport, the sport still won that. you were also at a disadvantage on the sport steering
On the trx. Need to shave your plastic c-hubs. And install a lay down servo mount or a 3D printed servo on axle mount on the trx. Also a little under/overdrive on the trx will help your steering right now on stock servo mount your steering is very limited. And your c-hubs are hitting your knuckles. Trx is a proven champ. I run 3 rigs trx based and one of them still running stock rails and stock transmission. She’s a killer
TRX4 did great. Is that the stock transmitter? If so, sadly, no way to set steering endpoints. I ended up buying the next model up (found a good deal on eBay) when I realized that after upgrading the servo.
You can set endpoints with the stock radio....its just a mess to do and a nightmare of menu trees. You can also set them in the bluetooth module that goes in the back of the radio. My opinion...ditch the stock RX and go GT5.
Here is my 2 thoughts. Buy another receiver for that gt5 and put it in the trx4 S . adjust end points. Put a lockable diff in the rear. Use it as a dig kinda. Sometimes you can unlock the diff and hook that rear tire into a wall and it will function like dig. Plus it makes your turning radias better
Use a cork hack we posted for steering 😂😂 Some how my husband put the flat edge of champagne cork to wheel and electrical taped it to it🤩 Nice terrain and trucks

don't you feel that putting a underdrive in the rear is defeating the purpose of 4 wheel drive? i mean you are in a constant lost of traction and your motor is working a whole lot harder and your drive train is always in a bind or fighting each other for priority for the front or the rear. Wouldn't having unlocking and locking diffs be a way better option so that you can control where you want the slip to occur thus making climbing easier especially lets say that you are locking a wheel up between rocks then you can unlock the diff and let the other spill while the front pulls your out or the rear push's you out. i can only see one real advantage with doing with under/over drive if you are trying to get the front over a lip and pull you over if you have 4 wheel drive but then you could just unlock the rear diff to do the same and let the front hook and pull you out and then activate the rear locker. what are your thoughts?
Would be nice have a ready to run scale crawler class ,allowed to change only a few parts like steering servo and tires (from a tires list) no weights allowed ,no change in suspension and link position,Motor and esc no brushless no battery position change,no shell change and no cutting ,only 2s.A "drivers" class not have the best trucks class.

Thanks Logan, I love your videos. Question is there reason that you didn’t lock the diffs on the TRx4? As you heavily used the dig on the Phoenix.
The sport doesn’t have selectable differential
@@westdesertwheeler thank you, I hadn’t realized that. I’m just getting into crawling, and loving your channel while I learn!
