HUGE New District [Apartments, Big-Box Retail, Houses] in Cities Skylines

  • In this episode we're taking a break from the heavy industrial theme that has marked recent episodes - instead building a huge new district with both modern and 1970's apartment complexes, 1950-1980s ranch-style houses, and big-box retail in the form of a Macy's department store, accompanied (of course!) by lots of surface parking!

    - What's the rationale behind this project:
What happens if a washed-up-used-to-be-RUclipsr gathers a bunch of "generic" looking assets (though mostly inspired by Australian / Canadian cityscapes) with the hopes of creating a Cities: Skylines region full of towns and cities that both look realistic and are inspired by Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA, while at the same time don't really replicate any one particular style? No idea, let's find out.
Join me in this Cities: Skylines modded gameplay / let's play / timelapse series as we expand the region, and build new infrastructure, highways, public transit, industrial pockets, NIMBY-neighbourhoods, sprawling suburbs and bustling downtowns. And of course, use tress excessively to cover up any imperfections!
    Q & A:
Do you have a MOD/Asset list?
    - Not at this point in time.
    Which map is this?
    - Anahita Pass by Owl - although slightly modified
Which Theme and LUT are you using?
    - Theme is Los Angeles by OWL, slightly mixed with Grass and Pavement textures from the NotSoRocky Hills theme by Khanador. LUT is Coastal by Ronyx69.
How do you place residential buildings so fast in suburbs/neighbourhoods?

Which visual MODS do you use?
    - Here's the full list of enabled visual mods (I don't know if some of these cancel out others): Relight, Render IT!, Ultimate Level of Detail, Clouds & Fog Toggler, Daylight Classic, Adaptive Prop Visibility Distance, Softer Shadows, Ultimate Eyecandy, ShadowStrengthAdjuster, Sharp Textures, Sun Shafts, AD Cloud Enabler, Shadow Distance Fix, 8K AD Clouds Pack 01.
Which graphic settings does your game run?
    - Everything is set to high, 1440p resolution.
    Hardware specs?

I might at some point compile a list. I used to have an old version of a list made in Load Order Tool. As for steam workshop collections, I don't use those and would have to make several as the cap is 1000 assets, so with my busy schedule that is a time investment that I would rather spend creating content 😊

I love, that even though you're building a cookie-cutter neighbourhood, you still add a basic bus network, which I think you don't see that often.
One idea for a future project is maybe, to have an old cookie-cutter neighbourhood being redeveloped with the big-box retail being replaced by a lifestyle center and larger modern houses being build in between the older houses (like the ones used in this build)
Keep up the good work :)

I have a feeling Garland is very good site for an edge city. Right by a highway interchange with a major road, and already a major shopping destination, perfect place to add more offices and stores.

I’ve really been enjoying this series and always look forward to new episodes. Just one tiny comment on this week’s build, I feel like it would be prudent to have another exit to the little housing complex in Danton surrounded by hedges so residents have easy access to the bus network instead of having to walk all the way around.

I ADORE your approach to developing this map. Most people (me included) make every part of their cities as big as they would be in real life.
Huge sprawling suburbs, huge farmland areas...and after a while it becomes tedious to make all those areas look good simply because of HOW HUGE they are.
Meanwhile you make every single area as small as possible while still conveying the feeling of the area.
This inspired me to change my approach when making a Netherlands inspired map and, DUDE...Not only is it easier to find places for every project...It's also much more manageable when it comes to detailing and so much more rewarding to go through my map looking at all the cool looking small areas, all the projects I built...It completely got rid of the tedium of making a huge city.
I love it! Thank you for this inspiration!

Even though you mentioned that you didn‘t map everything out before recording the episode, it never feels as if you‘re „just throwing stuff together“, just for the sake of getting stuff done. Since the railroad is passing through the new neighborhood you could build an elevated train station, that could be the explication of why they built high density nearby the station, and well that’s a reason to build a new station, since it would have very good ridership, you could consider the option of building a minimal station, and making that neighborhood a transit hub

Whoa that looks gorgeous!! So amazed with how you manage to turn a simple build into such a fancy one😊 Thanks a lot! For some suggestions, if I may, those red buildings mostly suit for office purposes than living because of the cargo facility right next to it, there are trucks all over the place all the time, this would that neighborhood not the fancy own and could potentially turn into a getto, so maybe you can repurpose those) For the bus stops: from the transport perspective the most thing that will make sense is to change asphalt at the stops to concrete, which is stronger (good for heavy buses staying at the spot) and at the same time it’s an identification of the stop for car drivers. And also it would be great if there was a small bike/pedestrian bridge to the other side of the river, so that people could get to the mall on there own)) Once again, amazing content, once I’m set in you country, wait me on the Patreon) Yours, Mike

    I love your videos.
You perfectly capture the dystopian mindset of (mostly) american city infrastructure. It's hard to build like that when you actually know how easily you could design a livable city in this game.
Just look at that little housing complex you build 10:40 onward. Despite having footpaths within the complex you purposefully disconnected the paths from the bus stop you build later to discourage the people living there to take the bus instead of the car. This way car dependency stays high even when public transport is available.
You also masterfully display how difficult cookie cutter neighborhoods are difficult to navigate without car by leaving away logical footpaths and bike paths. And then at 4:24 you even cut the only non-car connection between both sides of the highway when you redesigned the underpass solely with cars on mind.
    *chefs kiss*
Your videos artfully process and display the essence of car-brain.

    *Dear Mayor Infra,*
Congratulations on yet another fantastic build, Mister Mayor. I know you may be busy and every effort is truly appreciated (seriously, your videos are one of the highlights of my week). May I submit the following suggestions: (1) *Add a dual track the freight line on the **_'Old Brickland Bridge'_* - or create an overlap track until it approaches the bridge - because as it stands trains could be stuck on the main line while a train traverses from the port. (2) *Add a bus route connecting Garland to the train station in Danton* to allow commuters from Pine Harbour and Port Douglas to be able to easily come to the town (or add an overhead station in Garland). (3) *A petition to rename Danton to Dammara Park* after the dammara or kauri genus of trees* - in keeping with your established tradition of naming major settlements after conifers. I apologise if I come off as demanding or abrasive, but I am just so excited about this project. I would be honoured if you gave any of my suggestions your earnest consideration.
*Your eager constituent (and self appointed advisor), J.K. Loans.*

looks really nice. I'd just say I think at about the 26:00 mark you heavily landscaped behind the houses, blocking their view of the river. in the uk at least a river view values the property on average 57% more and it just seems like a developer or owner wouldnt want to block that view and go lighter on the landscaping. very minor and just a suggestion of course

By the oil refinery, I think you should change the fright tail tracks to an older style rail track as this was the original line and links with the old bridge you built a few episodes back. I also think for the passenger rail lines, when you get towards the new modern rail bridge you should make the tracks look newer as these will have been realigned/replaced when the new bridge was built.

    > The new apartment complex you built and then put a nice Bus Stop behind it ... Unfortunately you hedged around the whole complex, you should go back and make a small passage through the hedge so the PEDESTRIANS can access the bus stops without having to walk all the way around the complex. I love the Artistry and detail you add to your builds. You really have mastered the tools of this game and I think many channels could learn a lot of technique from you. I enjoy watching every time.
