How a Train Station TRANSFORMED a Small Town in Cities Skylines! | Coniferia 26

  • In this episode we continue our countryside/small-town vibes theme, giving our sleepy suburb of Danton a massive overhaul! Poor little Danton (which is actually quite well-off) has been a bit of a laughingstock of the series for a while now, where the only thing of notice to highlight has been the "gas station with 4 employees". Not anymore! As several of you have also pointed out, Danton is located right next to the train line that connects the region, so it's due time Danton gets its own Train Station!
Danton as a suburb was established in the 1930s, and it wasn't until 1970/80's that the Train Station was built - the construction of the station resulted in the development of new commercial enterprises, businesses, and shops right next to the station, effectively creation two small commercial centers in Danton!

    - What's the rationale behind this project:
What happens if a washed-up-used-to-be-RUclipsr gathers a bunch of "generic" looking assets (though mostly inspired by Australian / Canadian cityscapes) with the hopes of creating a Cities: Skylines region full of towns and cities that both look realistic and are inspired by Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA, while at the same time don't really replicate any one particular style? No idea, let's find out.
Join me in this Cities: Skylines modded gameplay / let's play / timelapse series as we expand the region, and build new infrastructure, highways, public transit, industrial pockets, NIMBY-neighbourhoods, sprawling suburbs and bustling downtowns. And of course, use tress excessively to cover up any imperfections!
    Q & A:
Do you have a MOD/Asset list?
    - Not at this point in time.

Which visual MODS do you use?

Finally a Danton expansion. I love the thought of having these small communities along the train line between Port Douglas and Pine Harbour. It really turned out cool especially the area around the train station.

I think there maybe should be a pedestrian overpass so that people from the Industrial area near the train station and the residential houses on that side of tracks could easily get to the train station, because now they would have to walk to the road that crosses the tracks, which is a big detour, particularly for pedestrians.
Those houses seem wealthy enough to have the influence to have lobbied for that, since the construction of the train station.

I think it'd be interesting to have the next small town be the inverse of Danton with respect to the train station; namely, as a rail junction where the station was built before most of the town. Maybe have an older 1930s style station there, and possibly a single track branch line to connect other small towns on the mainland.

@@Infrastructurist I'm glad you like the idea! I spent a lot of my life travelling around NSW, Australia, by train, and it's definitely the norm for country towns to preserve their original station buildings, even if more modern buildings grow around it in the immediate vicinity. Blayney NSW is one such town that grew this way due to being an important rail junction (among other things), although the branch line from there has long since closed.

I think there’s a stop order issue with the Danton bus line. It stops twice in the “old downtown” area, instead of stopping once, heading to the train station, and stopping once again in “old downtown.” Right now it just stops twice while it’s looping in the old downtown zone.

It is probably worth moving the bus stop at the entrance to Danton to the road on the right so that it doesn't have to make those circles around. There can't be a comment without mentioning a tram, so, if possible, it would be so amazing to have elevated stops (leveled with the floor of trams, so that people don't need to make a step up to get on it) small detail that adds so much context on how major cares about his citizens) hope to see a new episode soon, it's incredible, thank you for your work!

I said but I'll say it again: this map is giving me some real bay area vibes :) I can imagine that where the Port Douglas island reaches the mainland you'd have a lot of car centric suburban development (stroads etc.) as the city limit would stop there and you'd have pretty much free real estate for developpers.
Also a remark regarding your railroads: you have the trees really really close to the tracks. In reality you'd have the branches of those trees being at least minimum 4 meters away from the right of way.

    • @Infrastructurist
      @Infrastructurist  Год назад

Thanks for the feedback PublicTransportationBelgium - and probably a really good point regarding the trees. it is something I have noticed as well - it is a little lazy to just use the painter to smash them in anywhere there is room. 😂

    What a build!
The block right by the school, arriving at Danton, is a 2-lane (down from the 4-lane up to it from Pine Harbor) - logically it should also be a 4-lane one, which would then diverge the traffic in the two main directions - straight into the "old" Danton, and right, towards the train station.

I know that I'm super late but I recently discovered this series and have been binging it so far. I know the chances that you haven't touched Danton ever since uploading this is pretty slim but just in case I have a suggestion for the train station as someone who grew up in a satellite town / suburb which is that the train station having bypass tracks for trains not stopping at Danton is pretty unrealistic for a town that size. I'm purely speaking from my own experiance but my local train station that connects my suburb to the city didn't have bypass tracks installed up until a few years ago despite being much bigger than Danton, instead the intercity trains and the local commuter trains had to share tracks which made taking trains pretty inconvenient but it was clear that it was a leftover from when the place was much smaller, which is why the commuter trains recieved dedicated tracks a few years ago. The point I guess I'm trying to make is that for Danton's current size it'd be much more realistic for the train station to share train tracks with all other trains that aren't stopping there instead of having its own dedicated tracks.

How have you done that all of the houses that you plop down has driveways or pathways to the curb? Is that a mod as well?

These assets have them included. But I've seen one creator (two dollar twenty) edit particular assets individually himself before building his city. So they had some detailing he wanted - a driveway, a garage, garden table with chairs, etc.

I am still new to the game. I was wondering can you please do a video about the mods you use? How can we download them too?

Hi Dany - you can subscribe to mods through the Steam Workshop, if you have the game on Steam. I unfortunately don't have full lists of all the mods I use - I use in excess of 105 mods. I do have a list of all the visual mods I use in the description though.

i think a good more essentials-only modlist would probably be like "nicolet bay" from "city planner plays".

I feel like you underdo the amount of parking in an American style city. Most American cities have unnecessary amounts of parking typically.

Your industrial area consists of quite a bit of logistics, logistics is almost always placed where there are good road connections, not really train connections as it's focused on cargo rather than people. The road it's located on is currently connected by dirt roads, I suggest improving the connectivity for the trucks by upgrading those roads to a little bigger so its more realistic, awesome stuff though! Really enjoying the series.

@@Infrastructurist Yes! Although i see now that you did upgrade them to a small highway type. Also definitely make a local and rapid train service separate! That would be really cool, I dont know if its possible but even adjusting the speed per line like 160 km/h for the rapid and 120 km/h for the local would be pretty cool to see (Dont ask me how overtaking would work in this game though)
