Gentrification vs. Decline in the Big City in Cities Skylines

  • We're back at it with a big expansion to the Regional Capital City of Port Douglas - continuing work on the historical neighbourhood of Brickville, a former primarily working-class area populated by row houses, that has now seen some portions of it, mostly Inner Brickville, undergo heavy gentrification in the past few decades. Inner- and Outer Brickville are separated by Brickville park and Church, cutting right through the two areas - and Outer Brickville is much less gentrified. Being closer to the original industrial core of the to-be-built dockyards - the area has seen much less interest than its more popular closer-to-downtown twin.

    - What's the rationale behind this project:
What happens if a washed-up-used-to-be-RUclipsr gathers a bunch of "generic" looking assets (though mostly inspired by Australian / Canadian cityscapes) with the hopes of creating a Cities: Skylines region full of towns and cities that both look realistic and are inspired by Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA, while at the same time don't really replicate any one particular style? No idea, let's find out.
Join me in this Cities: Skylines modded gameplay / let's play / timelapse series as we expand the region, and build new infrastructure, highways, public transit, industrial pockets, NIMBY-neighbourhoods, sprawling suburbs and bustling downtowns. And of course, use tress excessively to cover up any imperfections!
    Q & A:
Do you have a MOD/Asset list?

How do you place residential buildings so fast in suburbs/neighbourhoods?

Which visual MODS do you use?
    - Here's the full list of enabled visual mods (I don't know if some of these cancel out others): Relight, Render IT!, Ultimate Level of Detail, Clouds & Fog Toggler, Daylight Classic, Adaptive Prop Visibility Distance, Softer Shadows, Ultimate Eyecandy, ShadowStrengthAdjuster, Sharp Textures, Sun Shafts, AD Cloud Enabler, Shadow Distance Fix, 8K AD Clouds Pack 01.

Might be interesting to have an exclusive park with the mayor's mansion on the other side of downtown. I would imagine it would be surrounded by upscale townhouses and pre-war apartment buildings, basically where the old money lives.

I‘ve said it before but your attention to detail is astounding. You have the ability to create a well balanced and authentic randomness, which makes it feel lifelike and familiar. The way you use your tools (streets, assets, mods!) is inspiring. I‘m learning a lot. Well done.

Hey man! I noticed with the school you were a bit sad you couldn't remove only the front parking with BoB, but you actually can! In the top left of the menu is the buttons for what you want to edit, and in the top middle are the three buttons for if you want to select all in the building, or only one of the selected assets in the building. This way you can remove individual trees, props, or in this case parking lots.

Amazing work (as always :) This long park extending to the waterfront with rowhouses on the side remind a lot of a time I visited Brighton. The side of Brunswick (and Hove in general) is a lot like what you built and may be a good inspiration place for the waterfront as well. They have these well kept old houses facing the parks even if the back streets may not be that nice.
Perhaps the lots facing the park/water are gentrifying while the neighbourhood in the back is left to fend for itself? A trend with city governments you see is that revitalising a certain neighborhood actually means redesigning one street or two to be very modern while disregarding the other parts that make that place one neighborhood. This is sort of how gentrification starts, the actual residents drawing away from a part of a neighborhood as it is made more "general" and therefore new people filling that gap. In a way, the new tram street is a sign to the people in Outer Brickville that times are changing. This isn't only a transit project, the city is opening a way in for businesses and higher tax brackets to Outer Brickville, a place with lower land cost compared to the center but still well connected to the tram network. People knock on doors to ask residents for their land with prospects hard to say no to. There are more real estate agencies popping up, and signs of "[blank] Residence" start appearing in billboards. Will the residents stand together and protect their quaint neighborhood, or will big business buy them out and drive them further away? Outer Brickville may fall the same fate as Inner Brickville.
I just love writing lore for this series. It's very intricate the work you put out, and that makes it impossible to hold off appreciating it narratively :))

Lurking since the start of the series, love the process and the way you're playing the game.
If you're concerned with prop limit, intersection marking tool can ease a lot of that. For example, the trees you place on the nature strips blocking parking, bollards and fences along the park, even the lamps running down the middle of the park can be done this way.
Always a joy to watch when you upload a new episode, keep up the good work!

I am quite new to this series, so I don't know that much about Coniferia, like what part of the world we are in or what the majority religion is, but I personally feel that some sort of free church would fit very well in, like a pentecostal, methodist or baptist church. The pentecostal movement, at least in Sweden where I live, are prevelent in working class neighborhoods, and Hillsong style churches are popular in the more trending parts of town, this could be another detail really adding to all of this lively feeling. Really loving this series tbh, keep it up!

Finally caught up. I got to say, I preferred the shorter video's a bit more. I find myself skipping through some of your content.
About that, you're still an absolute expert in creating a very convincing atmosphere for your neighbourhoods. They look alive and at times, laden with history. Don't ever change that.
I think you could have saved yourself some time and spontaneous mistakes (brickville park moved about) by building a neighbourhood like brickville how it was when it was built, say in the early 1900's. After all, these neighbourhoods were likely planned out and conceived as a whole. Just plonk down row after row and street after street of similar brick row houses. After that is done, develop each part if brickville according to its history; gentrify one bit, decline another.
I think Brickville could use a theater house/cinema..

Would be cool with some rowhouse areas with a lot of the same exact houses after each other. Maybe some factory owner bought a lot of land back in the days to build housing for his workers and he just built the same exact house 5+ times because it was cheaper. You can see this in many cities around the world. Of course with some slight variations since they probably have been bought up by private owners. I just think some more of this repetition could make it look even more low income and that it historically even been zoned for workers. This could really fit since you are going to have your industrial harbor nearby.
