Thanks for the great feedback on this tutorial! A few additional notes - since I was trying to keep the video as short and concise as possible: 1. The collection in the description of the video is complete and contains all of the visual mods you will need, including all necessary requirements of those mods. Do not subscribe to *any* additional mods that affect the visuals in the game. Mods such as Sharp textures, Clouds and Fog Toggler, Post Process FX v1.9.0, etc. are all either incompatible or included with these mods and may cause issues or the game to not load. 2. This includes the recommended mod dependencies of *Relight* - Do not subscribe to Ultimate Eye Candy and Shadow Strength Adjuster. 3. Pittsburgh is a hilly city, if your city is not - lower both your *Horizon Height setting* and *Fog Height* settings gradually in Fog Controller until you see the blue horizon right above your map and fog is at the desired level. 4. You may want to adjust Longitude and Latitude in Theme Mixer. Mine is set for a city in Midwestern/Rust-Belt region of the US. Look up the values to your desired region to adjust for extra realism. 5. Most Cubemaps on the workshop have an ideal Longtitude, Latitude, and time of day to make the sun light the cubemap and skybox correctly. To see the the ideal settings, check the workshop pictures for the cubemap you’ve downloaded on steam. I hope this tutorial was helpful for your city’s visuals and lighting! If you have any additional questions, feel free to comment them below.

Great job. I play vanilla-ish gameplay with 81 tyles mod, next to no workshop assets & lifestyle mods on an average pc. Following these tips has enhanced my in game enjoyment 1000%. This is insane! Not only do your videos (and cities) look great, but also you're kind enough to give us all a thorough tutorial. I'll definitely check if I have all the listed mods in my collection and tweak the settings as soon as I return to the game.
Mine didn't really end up looking like your at all. It would be useful to show it start from a 'vanilla' look. Then for each setting showed show what it should look like at that point. Would make it easier to identify and what step it went wrong. I believe it may be due to the menus looking alot different now. Also the LUT will not apply from theme mixer, I had to do it in Render it.
Same. Mine looks like a hot mess. Super contrasty, blown out whites, pitch black shadows. If I select a LUT in Theme Mixer 2.5 it does nothing until I enable LUT in Render It - and that's the instant switch to looking horrible. Also what map theme is being used in Theme Mixer? Some look ok, others look like a nuclear wasteland.
One should note that the type of monitor you use has a major impact on visuals overall. It might not turn out how you want it to if you are using lets say a TN Panel, that has very matte colors.
Making some of these changes is already a vast improvement on the visuals ... I have been struggling with overly green and too-dark shadows for too long now.
Hey Biffa! Thanks for stopping by, I’m glad you found the guide helpful, just as I’ve found countless videos of yours helpful :) I have a pretty beefy PC that I built completely around C:S, content creation, and most recently 3D modeling! GPU - RTX 3090 CPU - i9 10900k RAM - 64GB 3000MHz Memory (256 GB dedicated to page file) - 2TB Samsung 970 EVO plus Storage - 4TB Seagate Barracuda
@Gaseous Stranger thanks 😊 That's a beefy pc indeed! I'm due an upgrade and want to pick some parts that'll really help me push the CS graphics further than I can at the moment while recording too.
I definitely recommend looking at CPU’s with high single core clock speeds, that makes the biggest difference I believe in the performance of the simulation and reducing lag/stuttering. After that, of course fast RAM and an equally fast page file make a big difference as well. 64GB is the max that the game can take advantage of. For your page file, you can set the storage up to 4x of your RAM amount to load in additional assets beyond the limit of your RAM. The GPU was mostly to aid in video editing and now comes in handy for 3D modeling, but in C:S it’s completely unnecessary! I never really surpass more than 10-12gb of VRAM even while pushing the limits of every graphics mod in dense areas. I hope you enjoy the new parts you decide to pick up :)
I just want to thank you, after seeing all the videos with realistic views, I can finally create something that looks and feels real. Again thank you for the pointers.
Just wanted to say thanks for this video! I thought my city was ugly… turns out it was just my mod settings. It’s like night and day and there are moments where I caught myself saying “wow” at parts of my city I’d seen dozens of times before
The easiest yet most thorough tutorial to follow so far. Thank you for all the work in this! Question though, at 2:54, "Classic Fog (Enable Cubemap)" is unchecked. On my side when its left unchecked, the sky is left pure blue with only some of the AD clouds in place. Shouldn't it be checked to enable use of the Cubemap Replacer? When I checked Classic Fog (Enable Cubemap), the entire sky populated with the cubemap I selected.
That setting is sometimes broken, thanks for bringing it to my attention and apologies for not mentioning that in the video. If checking the box creates the skybox as expected for you, go ahead and use that setting. In my save, it only works if I unselect the setting. Hope this helps to clear things up!

After that I closed the game and looked for some mods to help me with the nodes, marking tools etc.. Well..All this is beside the point, but I've looked for some nice graphic mods too like in this video and I can't figure out why my game still looks bad. Thanks for the video. I always get mixed feelings when I see these C:S realistic graphics video's. On one end they are really gorgeous, but every time when I try to copy it (even these precise settings as shown in the video) my result doesn't even come close to these realistic. I'm using the same theme's, mods etc, but it still just looks meh🤷♂ And Render It has changed so much and seem to keep certain settings "hostage" by now. In your and most video's around these awesome graphics settings from the 12 months all have the Vanilla Tonemapping and Vanilla Color Correction LUT settings not active, but when I do that on my end no LUT ever gets applied, nor does the Relight settings. And when I do activate it, the graphics still won't look as close as f.e. 4:43
Wow, I flew over from the UK to visit Pittsburgh only six weeks ago, and its uncanny how closely you've nailed it! Wish I could zip back and have another pint in Satalio's pub overlooking the city from Mt. Washington, while watching videos of your build. :)
I was about to be driving down the stretch of highway in the thumbnail and could not believe my eyes. As someone who has seen that imagine in person hundreds of times, that is ultra realistic! love it!
Hey, this is a brilliant tutorial! Was wondering if you could do an updated version with the Relight and Daylight Classic settings converted to the Render It! mod?
Thanks for this, I've just copied your settings to use as a base to slightly tweak, other than the coordinates which are correct for my city. I don't get the clouds looking as good as yours, I must have another mod conflicting with it, coz I've been playing around trying to sort this for years. Will have to go through and workout which mods are conflicting tomorrow. Cheers
Make sure to not subscribe to any visual mods other than the ones mentioned in the video and included in the collection in the description (even the popular ones like Shadow strength adjuster, Cloud and fog toggler, etc) as they may introduce issues and conflicts
Desperately trying the clouds to work as intended. At 2:54, the clouds didn't look like that when I turned off classic fog. I have HDRI Haven Pack, 8K clouds pack. The settings are pretty much the same except fog and horizon height.
I was doing fine following along and copying settings with RenderIt until I got to Advanced - where your tab looks COMPLETELY different than mine. On my game, the 'Advanced' tab only has a place for keymap settings for profiles and nothing else?? (whereas your shows a large variety of additional settings) I only dl'd it a few days ago so I assume I got the most current version, but I will check again... Also (for anyone searching like I had to) , to get into the Relight options you need to click Shift + Alt + L Having said that, thank you very much for this video - it's always frustrated me that the game was so flat I sometimes couldn't tell when it was going up or down. Those days will be gone for good! (or at least until the mod providers abandon them.) :)
As a *LONG* time user of Ultimate Eye Candy, it’s well worth the transition. On top of some moderate performance gains, you are able to achieve so much more visually with Render-it! I held on to Ultimate Eye Candy until just a few months ago because I could never get the settings right, it ruined my visuals and it was intimidating to start over. But after many hours of tweaks and adjustments, I was able to get the game looking better than ever before. Now hopefully this video provides a good starting point, so nobody else needs to spend hours in the settings :)
I'll add a couple more things with your permission) Post process FX. Edit highlights of light areas of buildings... also adds its own touch of realism)
And it’s worth adding (although maybe I missed or didn’t hear ahah) that if you set the texture setting to a high level, then you need to take into account that big cities may not pull some PC builds... like mine)
Great video, though the Render it! mod has been updated and doesn't match exactly to your video now. Any way you could show an updated video with how the mod works/looks?
With how often mods change, I can’t maintain an updated guide on them unfortunately. All settings shown in the video will translate over to the new mods well. However, I still currently use this same mod-list and it works great for me!
@@darklightning No, that mod is outdated now and replaced by render-it and play it. It will conflict with these mods and cause issues when used together with this set up

My wife and I just bought a new gaming rig, and I plugged your settings in to my game after I installed it, and it looks great! Thank you for this! Side question: what blend of trees do you use for your wooded areas?

Happy to help! Thank you!
ALREADY 2023 I LOVE IT. HAPPY NEW YEAR GASEOUS STRANGER!
Amazing work! Glad to see the video got the attention it deserves!
Thank you Will!
Wasn’t expecting my hometown to appear in a Cities Skylines video.
Thanks for the video. I always get mixed feelings when I see these C:S realistic graphics video's. On one end they are really gorgeous, but every time when I try to copy it (even these precise settings as shown in the video) my result doesn't even come close to these realistic. I'm using the same theme's, mods etc, but it still just looks meh🤷♂
And Render It has changed so much and seem to keep certain settings "hostage" by now.
I feel your pain, I am getting the same thing.
I´m guessing half or more of the look is due to the assets he's using.
This game has been so much more enjoyable with these settings, damn. Thanks man.
That’s great to hear! Just happy to help 😄
Wow, I flew over from the UK to visit Pittsburgh only six weeks ago, and its uncanny how closely you've nailed it! Wish I could zip back and have another pint in Satalio's pub overlooking the city from Mt. Washington, while watching videos of your build. :)
Thank you! Mount Washington episode will be coming shortly, most likely this spring :)
I was about to be driving down the stretch of highway in the thumbnail and could not believe my eyes. As someone who has seen that imagine in person hundreds of times, that is ultra realistic! love it!
When i apply your color grading settings and disable vanilla tonnemapping, it all goes super dark with crazy blooming
Hey, this is a brilliant tutorial!
Was wondering if you could do an updated version with the Relight and Daylight Classic settings converted to the Render It! mod?
Yea half of these mods are red in compatibility report.. Dynamic resolution not working anymore.
Thank you for this video I’ve been trying to figure out how to download mods for months and this was super helpful👍
Happy to help! 😄
0:40 - so the video ends for me... Nice
The Best video about CitiSkyline I have found over the internet.
Thinking about returning to the game after 2 years absence, and this video is a great place to start! Thank you!
Gorgeous city man!! Looks great to see it replicated so well! I don’t come to the city often but about an hour on the turnpike and I’m there ❤️
Thanks for this, I've just copied your settings to use as a base to slightly tweak, other than the coordinates which are correct for my city.
I am from Pittsburgh and that looks amazing wow
Hope skylines 2 gets these mods too.
That game is ugly
Desperately trying the clouds to work as intended. At 2:54, the clouds didn't look like that when I turned off classic fog. I have HDRI Haven Pack, 8K clouds pack. The settings are pretty much the same except fog and horizon height.
this just doesnt work
I just ordered a gaming laptop and I CANT wait to use these 😩
How did you get The Cedar Bridge? I can’t seem to see it nowhere.
This is the best visual mod guide so far.
Bro you did my home city justice! Looks just like the BURGH!!!
Also (for anyone searching like I had to) , to get into the Relight options you need to click Shift + Alt + L
Having said that, thank you very much for this video - it's always frustrated me that the game was so flat I sometimes couldn't tell when it was going up or down. Those days will be gone for good! (or at least until the mod providers abandon them.) :)
Only person who could convince me to switch to render it! Thanks for the great vid
Chef's Kiss! It's the video I've been waiting for!
I just got into CS and so glad I found your mod lists... This is going to blow my mind from base vanilla game...
I'll add a couple more things with your permission) Post process FX. Edit highlights of light areas of buildings... also adds its own touch of realism)
And it’s worth adding (although maybe I missed or didn’t hear ahah) that if you set the texture setting to a high level, then you need to take into account that big cities may not pull some PC builds... like mine)
great tutorial, switched to lumina yesterday and it completely fucked my game so ur tutorial helps me to get my old graphics settings back😆
Your work + STEAM big sale = I became one of the CITY player.
Amazing, very useful!
Thanks! Glad I could help
It’s absolutely beautiful I’m in shock It looks so real 🤤
Great video, gonna use these in game soon.
Very helpful, will definitely implement your tips!
Glad to hear :)
@@GaseousStranger By the way, what about your ultimate eyecandy settings? Aren't you using the mod at all?
@@darklightning No, that mod is outdated now and replaced by render-it and play it. It will conflict with these mods and cause issues when used together with this set up
@@GaseousStranger ok thanks! Does any of the replacing mods have the feature to change daytime? At the moment, this is the sole reason I'm using ultimate eyecandy
@@darklightning Yes, that mod is play-it :)
Bro nice work even in 2024! Imagine C:S creators made those graphic settings in vanilla game... this would be so good. Thanks! 😊
Thank you so much for this quick mod list. I should buy you a coffee :). Now all I need is a list of building assets to diversify the limited building types the game has to offer.
Thank you so much, amazing tweaks!
On 3:37 the road looks dirty and realistic textured. How can you achieve this? Mine always looks clean and smooth so it looks less realistic TT
It worked like a charm!! Thank you very much. 👍
Glad to hear!
it is always a pleasure! thanks so much for sharing
ALSO what is your setup?? (Computer, Desktop or pc)
Thanks. After departing with my beloved Ultimate Eyecandy, these tips are a real help. And to think i already have 95% of this list.
Thank you! Love your assets. Glad I was able to help :)
Great video ... just wondering what theme you use in this demo?
Thanks I use SCT-Homecoming :)

Gaseous Stranger: No need to worry
Me: :)
My pc: Boy if only you knew how much you need to worry...
Me: :(
Very nice video. I'm so excited to play with these changes. Speaking of excitement, The new trailer Cities Skylines 2 🤩
This is the video I needed. Thank you very much :)
Of course! Happy to help :)
Thank you , you saved my patience to this game
My wife and I just bought a new gaming rig, and I plugged your settings in to my game after I installed it, and it looks great! Thank you for this!
Side question: what blend of trees do you use for your wooded areas?
this guide was super helpful, thank you!
Glad it helped!
Great tutorial. Very useful and helped me simplify my graphics “workflow.” I understand a lot more about how these mods work with each other.
Glad it helped!
Danke!
At least one of the best CS1 Tutorials. Thank you! My game look so beautiful now. :-)
thank you so much!
Imagine they include this in the remastered version of the game next week
Hey, I’m having trouble with the Advanced setting option using the mod render it. It shows nothing besides Options between “Next profile” and “Previous profile”
I'm a bit confused about Daylight Classic. What is the difference between having all options toggled off and not using the mod at all?
Also would like to know this
Unsure if it was mentioned in the video, but what theme was used?

@@GaseousStranger thanks!
