This is one of the most fascinating anime I've ever watched. The way it presents the world somehow makes you feel like you're living there. It doesn't over explain things and you're living the days along with the characters. Every time I watch this I pick out something new that ties the story together even more. It will forever be my favorite anime.
Wolf's rain was the first anime I watched and it was one hell of a depressing way to start getting into anime, but it showed me how beautiful the medium could be. Glad you put a spotlight on this one!
My four siblings and I, we all share a memory of having each, individually watched this anime during our teens, due to it being one of the few things we had available to watch. Every now and then, when we do catch up, it will come up in conversation and I just think it's so special that it's this anime we have a shared memory of.
One of my ex-girlfriends bought me a collectors edition of Wolfs Rain. We aren't still together, but I will love her eternally for that. It's one of the most "wtf am I watching" anime's that I have ever seen. The kind of thing that, yes, they do not make anymore.
wolf's rain wasn't as WTF am i watching as Serial Experiments Lain. and I've watched it in full twice after recalling the broken snipets i watched when I was a kid and STILL don't get it.
7:30 I really like ending note cause it encapsulates what makes good, timeless art standout. Recently I’ve been bored with a lot of currently running series and found myself rereading mangas from my childhood. I got to re-experience the thrill of reading Kingdom all the way through, and that feeling rings true with the way you described Wolf’s Rain. Not to say that there isn’t good modern series being serialized right now, but more so that going back to enjoy something that stood out even at its time feels good. It’s like going to an art museum; sure, I can wholeheartedly enjoy a modern art piece like a Kehinde Wiley painting or an Ai Weiwei installation, but you evoke a completely different feeling looking back an oil painting by Caravaggio, or wood block prints by Kawase Hasui.
Ok I think this comment is insightful but I can’t ignore you saying you reread kingdom. I can not fucking fathom reading kingdom front to back more than once it is so god damn long EDIT: misread this, but the point still stands. Kingdom is the manga that taught me how to skim
@@ScamboliReviews it totally is, but I got that beast in me (adhd) that is also capable of reading one piece 4 times over. Just a brain habit that keeps me rereading shit Also can’t wait for the next vid man. Love your shit!
Out of all series i watched as a kid, this was one of the few that left me with emptiness. The animation, art and music... especially the music. Thanks for covering this underrated gem. I watched it for the first time earlier this year and I was surprised by how captivating it was. Everything from the story to the atmosphere to the characters. Plus the OST is from the same composer as Cowboy Bebop, Yoko Kanno, need I say more.
I freaking love Wolf's Rain, the atmosphere and vibes of that show were like nothing else. It started airing on Adult Swim when I was in 9th grade, and I would set our VHS player to record it since it aired late on school nights. I then got my dad to order me the two-disc OST online since I've loved orchestral music my entire life, and this amazing soundtrack was done by the legendary Yoko Kanno. When I eventually bought the DVD set, I'd rewatch it every couple of years. Now at 36 years old, I've probably seen the series about a dozen times.
"aired late on school nights" had me thinking you were younger than me when wolf's rain was on AS. Nope, just a little older actually - I think I had worse parents 😂 I also had the soundtrack and later bought the DVDs because I was so in love with this show. I felt lonely when I was 14 to not find another show quite like it or anyone else around me who liked it. So funny how we are never really alone though
I'm older than you by 6 years, so I was a young adult when AS started airing anime late at night. I loved those days. The early 2000s were a great time to be an anime fan since that's when anime exploded in popularity in the states. I, too, used to record anime episodes on VHS whenever I had to wake up early for work or mom would get pissed that I was up watching TV.
I remember being 15 or 16, discovering this anime during a time when internet access was scarce, and cable TV wasn’t common in Senegal. Watching just one episode felt like a rare treasure. I’d hum the intro in my head while riding my favorite bike to high school, completely lost in the excitement. On nights with a full moon, I’d often gaze at the sky, the outro song echoing in my mind. The haunting melody stirred something deep within me, and sometimes, tears would fall as I reflected on its bittersweet beauty. “Something is calling me, I see the gravity...”
@@ScamboliReviews On second thought, that is much better! "Wolfs Rain" just lacks the ambiguity and and intrigue of “Reincarnated as a Wolf in a post apocalyptic world as the lvl 1 hero”...
I grew up reading this manga, and I absolutely remember staying up to watch this masterpiece in high school. The audio and the visuals are still so haunting to me.
This series has been my second favorite show since it's debut on adult swim back in the day. Glad it's still getting recognition even today. Great video!
I loved this show when I first saw it back in the day. When my daughter became old enough to watch some of the more complex anime titles like Cowboy Bebop, Full metal Alchemist and Samurai Seven; I watched this with her. It was still gut wrenching to watch all the characters die as the story progressed; especially when Cher and Hubb pass away.
I'm glad you brough up the appreciating things in the end and then showing wistoria which is a blend of the that classic Clamp look(everyone is super skinny and gangly) with the sharpness of modern anime.
Thank you for covering this anime, I remember watching this in middle school after searching "werewolf anime". I never knew the name of it. Now I can rewatch it.
We've seen a real decrease in anime with true ambiguity over the years. You wouldn't really see stories like Texhnolyze, Ergo Proxy, Paranoia Agent, Angel's Egg and Wolf's Rain animated in the modern day. It feels like everything is more "hinged" now and safer narrative structures are preferred. That's not to say we don't get good anime anymore, but I do think we've lost the kind of anime that really make you wonder wtf is even going on and then proceed not to explain anything either. I'm happy at least Chainsaw Man was picked up by Mappa, cause that's one of the few modern anime that made me feel that way. My first anime unfortunately was Highschool of the Dead, so not exactly a renowned show. However, as a 13 year old completely new to anime (and oversized boobies) it was still enough to get me to try more. The first time I was truly absolutely wowed by an anime was when I watched Steins;Gate, I think. It was like my 10th anime or so and remains one of my favourites to this day.
I think they just fly under the radar more, there's way more anime now. I've seen some ambitious sleepers drop that no one really talks about, and are a bit experimental even for me.
..wait... you think Redo of a healer was safe? or goblin slayer? regardless. Yes it seems we've lost creativity in anime and it's all become formulaic (points to the Eisikai genre and Slice of life genre). The grand daddy of anime is even more formulaic and people still gush about it (yes.. I'm talking about DBZ. it's fine. but it's overhyped to me. That and bleach/naruto/one piece. Give me closed stories such as Wolf's rain, boogie pop phantom, serial experiments Lain, Elfen lied, gungrave, cowboy bebop, Vandread, etc.)
@ Redo of Healer and Goblin Slayer have the most generic plot progressions imaginable. Something being shocking doesn’t change that. I agree that DBZ is not that great, but a lot of people claim that it’s the source of all the shounen tropes you see today. I’m not sure how true that is since almost every piece of fiction ever written has borrowed heavily from other pieces of fiction.
It makes me so happy that someone brought attention to this show! I forget when I found it - either in middle school or high school (somewhere between 2007 and 2013) - but I was enraptured. I didn’t understand anything about the world but I didn’t care. Thank you for putting this out so others might discover this beautiful show!
i watched wolf's rain when i was 13 and it became immediately my favourite anime, and stayed my fav for years. i'm so happy you made such a beautiful a vid about it ❤
When I first watched Wolf's Rain it was like 2006 and i watched each episode split into 10 miniute parts on RUclips. One of the anime most dear to my heart.
i feel bad because you convinced me to watch it within 2 minutes so i turned the video off to not get spoiled but i know you worked hard on it so i am commenting so that maybe the engagement helps make up for it lmao.
I hope you enjoyed it, I've rewatched it so many times! It's one of those shows where you see or learn something different about it each time you watch it, and the English dub is pretty good too
my first anime was hunterxhunter. my old brother kept pestering me to start watching anime so he could have someone to talk to, so i did. your opening monologue really threw me back to a time where i was still in middle school, trying to connect my laptop to the schools shitty wifi so i could watch the next episode before 1st period, talking abt anime like it was a real tv show bc anime still wasnt rlly mainstream. ur vids srsly never miss.
I don't know what constitutes as "Post Modern" but this is what I'd call a post-modern fairytale, the last 4 episodes is so depressing and weirdly uplifting. It's yet another anime that reboots its own universe. It has a few storytelling flaws, one thing I think the director should have learned from Shinichiro Watanabe was the use of silence or no dialogue, some scenes needed minimalism for better effect.
They're both! Iirc, because the wolves were being hunted to extinction, they adapted and gained the ability to look like humans, but they are still wolves inside.
I love this anime, on top of everything else the soundtrack is from Yoko Kanno and her incredible entourage of musicians, same as Cowboy Bebop. i remember describing it to a friend as a desperate run towards the end of the world. I should rewatch it
Thank you for making this tribute to Wolf's Rain. This show has been a favorite of mine since I first saw it on Toonami and to this day, I still say that it's tied for number one with .Hack//Sign. I have attempted to get numerous people to watch this beautiful show but they never do or they fall off because it's "too slow." This show had an actual impact on my life. Hopefully your video will intrigue more viewers and let them see it the way we do. Until then though, it's at least good to know that there are still other fans out there that continue to think of this show as well.
Reminds me of one of my favorite anime. Redline, they just look so cool and very distinguished *"Limitations breed creativity"* Just like games from back then, anime nowadays focused way too much on being "realistic" We just want to escape reality. Stop making them look realistic, make them look artistic instead 😭😭
_Ergo Proxy_ is another underrated post-apocalyptic gem from yesteryear. The English dub also stars eaaaarly Yuri Lowenthal, which is a trip and a half lmao
Thank you for making a video on Wolfs Rain!! I loved this show on Adult Swim but i watched it waaaayyy too young to fully appreciate it till later when i could handle watching the ending again ^^
This is my favorite anime of all time. I discovered it when I was still a kid, and it's stuck with me throughout my life, and as someone who will sing it's praises and love all of it's faults, I cannot thank you enough for talking about it! Everything you pointed out is true from the mystery to the beauty of the art, the grime in every frame, the music, the plot holes, the lack of spoken words of the characters...It makes me so happy to see someone talk about it, so THANK YOU!
Okay this has been driving me insane, @6:42, this is a version of a song or tune that a lot of youtubers or shorts use and I can not for the life of me figure out what song it is, either this song that Scramboli is using or the original name.
What he's using ISN'T this, but some people think gymnopédie sounds like Sweden, from Minecraft. There are similarities, I think, but not as many as could be
Omg I was looking your intro and started to to remember my first interactions with anime. It was 2005 - 2006 with the payperview channel called AnimaX. It mostly played animes for older teens sorta seinen stuff (I was 8 or 9) And I watched also Wolfrain as my first anime with others as eureka seven, hack sign, final fantasy unlimited, hellsing and so on. I'm just honestly baffled about all the memories that came up right now! Love you scamboli ❤
I am so glad you made this video. I watched this show and was so immersed in the questions that it asked, I went out and bought the manga cause I was hoping it answered some of them, but it only asked more questions. Forever etched into my mind was that masked wolf guy who just shows up OUT OF NO WHERE and asks, "Will you follow me into the very heart of darkness?" I hope I never forget it. Thanks again
Wolfs Rain was my intro into anime. Back when i was a dumb kid and didnt know how to do much, i watched clip after clip on RUclips. It was janky as all hell but i fell in love with it. I just rewatched it after 10+ years. I still cried at the end. Stray will always give me an inexplicable feeling of deep nostalgia to the point where it feels like i have no worries for as long as that intro. Its like a spell being cast on me. I tried rewatching it with my bf but hes absolutely uninterested bc he hasnt fully been paying attention. Wolfs Rain will forever be one of my favs. It has a lot of glaring plotholes but man ill always love it
Depends on whether shows like Bleach count. There's a lot of anime where the characters are high schoolers, but most of the show doesn't take place at their school.
Man, Wolfs Rain was such an obsession for me back in the day. Amazing story, great character designs, beautiful art direction, and the soundtrack is just killer.
wolf's rain still has a special place in my heart even after all this time. it's so deep and melancholy, it touched me deeply as a kid, and it makes me happy to see that the show is still so beautiful.
Wonderful! No one ever mentions this show and it is hugely underrated! 2000's anime is peak, and there is nothing that will change my mind! Wolf's Rain, Mnemosyne, Ergo Proxy, Noein: Mou Hitori no Kimi e, Seirei no Moribito, Black Lagoon, Haibane Renmei, Chobits, Great Teacher Onizuka, Monster, Denno Coil, Baccano, Code Geass, Mushi-shi, Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, Kara no Kyoukai, Serial Experiments: Lain, Elfen Lied and probably loads more that I can't remember off the top of my head.
I dunno. I've never subscribed to a *this can't be made today* kind of mentality. But I cede your point that a show is an artifact of it's time and place. So by dint that it exists, it necessarily cannot be made today. The next Wolf's Rain will be an evolution or rejection of the lesson's learned by those who created the last Wolf's Rain.
"A taste for being lost" was an epiphany I didn't know I needed. I've always said "I prefer the media that I couldn't guess the plot" but what you said right there now has me scribbling into notes.

@@Veritanky That is another amazing classic.
The same team that made Cowboy Bebop, in case you needed an endorsement!
One of my ex-girlfriends bought me a collectors edition of Wolfs Rain. We aren't still together, but I will love her eternally for that. It's one of the most "wtf am I watching" anime's that I have ever seen. The kind of thing that, yes, they do not make anymore.
the closest to a modern wolfs rain is To Your Eternity and Golden Kamuy.
I don't watch anime, but I think you just sold me on the show
If you want "wtf am I watching", give Sonny Boy a shot. You kind of have to let go with that one to some extent. Great watch, released in 2021.
wolf's rain wasn't as WTF am i watching as Serial Experiments Lain. and I've watched it in full twice after recalling the broken snipets i watched when I was a kid and STILL don't get it.
I can not fucking fathom reading kingdom front to back more than once it is so god damn long
EDIT: misread this, but the point still stands. Kingdom is the manga that taught me how to skim

Out of all series i watched as a kid, this was one of the few that left me with emptiness. The animation, art and music... especially the music. When i think about it it's crazy to think just one anime could have this many songs that you never hear something like it so often.
I'll never forget how beautiful this anime is.
Oh man... I remember staying up til 3 am, just to watch this when it came on. I would tuck a towel under my door so the light wouldn't shine through and alert my parents that I was still awake. It was worth every sleepless night and early school mornings! lol Fond memories.
Gravity has to be one of my favourite early 2000 songs, and perfectly matches the tone of the show.
Heaven's Not Enough always had a bigger impact for me, but Gravity is also really good
I cry to Gravity lol
@@Wilderness-Autorka for me it's both. And to some extent, Flower's Bloom... no that's not the name.. Frienship? Friends? Gold in a flower bloom. Pah... i should know this.
pah! it was BOTH Stangers and Friends!
Strangers is about making friends while searching for paradise and lyrical. Friends is more of a melancholic reminiscence. friends is cry worthy because of the melancholly, Strangers is cry worthy because feels like in my wandering through this thing we call life i'm not going to be lucky enough to have good, deep connection true friends.. just surface level.
Tell Me What the Rain Knows is beautiful too
Thanks for covering this underrated gem. I watched it for the first time earlier this year and I was surprised by how captivating it was. Everything from the story to the atmosphere to the characters. Plus the OST is from the same composer as Cowboy Bebop, Yoko Kanno, need I say more.
Yoko Kanno sure knows how to steal good music!
You needn’t say more.
@@ScamboliReviews Do darker than black YN
I freaking love Wolf's Rain, the atmosphere and vibes of that show were like nothing else. It started airing on Adult Swim when I was in 9th grade, and I would set our VHS player to record it since it aired late on school nights. I then got my dad to order me the two-disc OST online since I've loved orchestral music my entire life, and this amazing soundtrack was done by the legendary Yoko Kanno. When I eventually bought the DVD set, I'd rewatch it every couple of years. Now at 36 years old, I've probably seen the series about a dozen times.
Was sick ; havent seen it since 04 , think about it often ! Had it downloaded when emule and limewire were still a thing
"This f*ckass sink only has ...." instant kindred spirit, instant sub! All that aside, thanks for such a great video! 😂
“Something is calling me,
I see the gravity...”

This was actually one of the very first anime i watched!
I remember picking it based on the name alone "Wolfs Rain" just sounds awesome!

Another anime that is just as good. Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo. Lovely art.

Wolf's Rain was my first anime in 2006 when I was 12 and I fell so deeply in love with the music, the art, and characters.

Babe? Why won’t you wake up??
I'm glad you brough up the appreciating things in the end and then showing wistoria which is a blend of the that classic Clamp look(everyone is super skinny and gangly) with the sharpness of modern anime.

Omg, my son and I loved this show! Adult Swim, 2004. ❤❤ Miss the great animes from around that time.
@@ScamboliReviews You could be very right. That on its own might be an interesting video idea if you ever have the time.
@@ScamboliReviews you need to send me a list then lol, id kill for a modern ergo proxy type of anime these isekais are putting me to sleep
..wait... you think Redo of a healer was safe? or goblin slayer?
0:13 😭 thank u scam for making me remember
It makes me so happy that someone brought attention to this show! I forget when I found it - either in middle school or high school (somewhere between 2007 and 2013) - but I was enraptured.
"Look to my coming on the first light of the fifth day, at dawn look to the east". He arrived!!!!
