This anime made me cry😭 I planned on talking about it on my blog soon but it sucks because I thought they’d be more conversation around it. I watched it when it came out and nobody I know has; even anime reviewers I usually watch don’t talk about it🙂
Like a few others mentioned this anime was on the back burner…I was going to watch it eventually and this video sped up the process. I’m so glad I did. I don’t think a show has come around that’s made me feel some type of way each of those sequence of deaths. I hated the smug Abdullah and murderous Pluto, and wanted both of them annihilated. First the hoarse cry of an old man to a kid grabbing severed hands to his face to be comforted one last time this show was amazing.
I have overlooked this anime so many times, I’m so glad I found this video as it’s clearly a mist watch! Thanks for sharing and for making such a genuinely passionate video!
I did notice it. It was amazing. I already knew the manga before watching it, and it did deliver everything I was hoping for. One of the best I have ever seen and most definitely in my top 3.
I think part of the reason Pluto might subsist on a very niche audience is because of its source material. When I first read the manga, I did not have an in depth understanding of the characters of Mighty Atom/Astro Boy, and while the initial story hook was strong and easy to understand and kept me going, by the end of the series, I felt lost in my understanding of many of the characters' motivations. Many of them are introduced in such a way that you are just supposed to know who it is. For fans of the original, that is easy, but I found myself having to go back and read the original in order to educate myself (both the early origin issues so I'd know who everyone was and the Greatest Robot on Earth story itself), then reread the entire Pluto manga to fully enjoy it. Yes, the reward is there eventually, but that's a big ask for a wider audience who might not want to take the time to delve into what they view as a "dated" manga or anime written seventy years ago when that audience wants something cutting edge and new with immediate understanding and payoff. Not only that, but Astro Boy seems to be marketed as a children's show here in the States, so I imagine most people who find out Pluto is "about Astro Boy" just assumes it's for kids or something.
I think Pluto is out of its time, we are no longer in the times of Akira and Ghost in the Shell, when this type of anime would be a huge success at the time when anime was are aliens, now anime is see in another way. The same underapreciation stupid separation of other midias and vision about this media, but more "mainstrean".
But I think the child thing is possible. There is blood and violence in the Pluto trailer and it shows horrible things, but Battle Shounen is aimed at young audiences and has gruesome themes and strong images. People still treat it as something lesser because it is for young people. Imagine the work based on Atom, which is more mature than a lot of the trash that these people consume, but it is treated as lesser because it is for children. Otaku and the general public still have the same immature treatment of age groups in stories, especially in Japan, where the vision of adults and young people is mixed up by the magazine publishing system and demographics.
It's gonna take time for people to appreciate Noaki's work en masse. Monster has finally been getting some love over the last few years despite the anime being out since '04.
I’m sorry monster was getting love for years before that. It’s just a very different type of anime that will never be mainstream. Simply because of what it is and how it’s presented.
@@flameron1 I think that on HBO, with the right marketing, everything by Urasawa was a hit. On the platforms where we see his adaptations circulating, it will be difficult.
perspective is such a crazy thing. im genuinely shocked to hear this anime underperformed. the people in my circle couldnt shut up abt this one. a coworker who doesnt even watch anime wanted to put me on it. even my mom was interested!! literally everybody and their mom was interested from my pov

Tuve que parar el video a la mitad para ir a ver la serie. Siempre me gustó Astroboy sin conocer el material realmente. Me gustaba su estetica. Gracias por presentarme esta nueva entrega. Volveré al terminar de verla.
Another recent example would be dead dead demons. It's not the best Asano Inio work tbh, but it has always been considered that most of his works will never be adapted and yet it was done beautifully by a relatively unknown studio. I blame crunchyroll for this.
The problem is not the studio, but the animators and the team behind the project. I've never heard of Studio M2 from Pluto but the director behind the project... (I haven't heard of him either), but after researching I knew it would come out something above average.
Wow… not knowing the source material/inspiration, this adaptation felt right. It took me sometime to watch it, but I did so knowing I need to be FULLY locked in to enjoy it. Glad I did. Yea, Netflix didn’t do this show justice in the promotion of it. I do have hope it will gain traction, because this is one of those anime I can recommend to ANYONE and be fairly confident that they will be engrossed by the plot.
Fan fact but Astro Boy was what the Americans decided to call him in their translations, in the original work he was actually known as The Mighty Atom that is why in the manga and anime of Pluto he is called Atom and not Astro Boy
I tried to rally viewers to this anime by one of Japan's greatest living Manga artist. His work grapples with humanities flaws and strengths. It is the opposite of the good guys versus bad guys trope.
I never read or saw the old manga/ anime, but i had played a game of astroboy for gba when i was kid. When i was warching pluto i never thought that it would be astroboy until it unfolded mid series, its a tragedy that it so underrated, cuz the plot is so well written
"Gesicht", pronounced ge-ZICHT (accent on the second syllable, "ch" pronounced like Scottish "ch" in the word "loch", the German intervocalic "s" is pronounced like "z") is a German word meaning "face". As with many mangas, there is a fascination with all things German, such as even in Evangelion, the organisations SEELE (soul) and NERV (nerve). Fascinating segment! I've liked, subscribed and look forward to seeing more of your content! I'll go watch the anime! PS Three episodes in and I realize PLUTO is a sublime masterpiece with AKIRA and EVANGELION-level artistry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for your segment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just finished the series in 2 days due to watching the first two minutes of your video. I absolutely loved it and it is criminal that it was not even on my radar. My 13 year old daughter also loved it and got choked up on parts of it and she does not like cartoons or anime. Word of mouth can save this masterpiece as i've already recommended it to multiple friends who i'm sure will do the same upon their completions of the series. Bravo to all involved and thanks for making this video!
This show was done so dirty. I was on Netflix one day, saw a new show called Pluto, and went, “wait, is that the Naomi Urasawa manga?” Like, I had absolutely no idea it was getting an adaptation. Not to mention, I heard absolutely nobody talking about it even though I already fell in love with it by the first episode.
It's sad to see how far the anime industry has strayed from greatness when the community at large can't appreciate a masterful reinterpretation of a classic by the grandfather of manga. But I'm still so glad this got adapted. Maybe the industry is slowly starting to get better... maybe. Inio Asano's Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction also got adapted and no one noticed... It's kind of depressing. But I guess it hurts less when you remember that most anime is just made to sell products or advertise the manga. It's no wonder I mostly read manga instead of watch anime these days.
If Pluto has a million fans, then I am one of them. If Pluto has ten fans, then I am one of them. If Pluto has only one fan then that is me. If Pluto has no fans, then that means I am no longer on earth. If the world is against Pluto, then I am against the world. Also, great video! Wish this was more talked about.
@@Rooster_RicI think he was sarcastic. There's a reason people called Netflix and Chill instead of Netflix and Think or anything thag actually rhymes.
wild how few people talked about this. this is my favorite manga ever and watched it immediately when it came out, and it's basically the most perfect adaptation ever made. and yet silence.
I only knew of Pluto because Monster was written by Urasawa, so when I saw it on Netflix I was so hyped about it, and then I watched an episode a day and... it was so amazing, easily in my top 5 anime. It's sad it didn't get much recognition, because it's wonderful all around.
I could see how this anime could get lost and forgotten, not because it's not good but requires you to pay attention to get into it. I first hand got to episode 2 without caring for it months later I gave it another shot and fell in love with it because I sat my butt down and watched it.
I think deep or mature works like that will forever be difficult to adapt outside of the occasional movie precisely because they require more engagement than the average show and there are so many shows with some highly clippable or memeable moments that are easy to blow up on social media and create hype compared to something that's just trying to efficiently tell a story. Manga is still full of personal pieces of art but a lot of it won't be big enough to get an anime adaptation as that's more of a marketing-oriented money making machine than an art medium nowadays. I think the real potential loss of shows like this not succeeding is that these adaptation don't come around except through the ambitions and connections of the directors or producers who are fans and really want it to exist and can push for it and get it done, if that becomes harder and riskier I imagine it'll happen even less, but if it gets support we can expect more passion projects from the industry. There's still very few ways that people internationally can actually support the anime industry directly and as a result they'll just have to rely on Netflix money etc. and get the same fate.
My parents gave me the Pluto Manga as a birthday presents a decade ago, I never own physical mangas as I prefer reading them online but still read them cause it was a first time experience and had no idea what the story was about. I was very impressed by the plot.
happy to have found the anime while scrolling on Netflix, recognized Astro Boy and started watching. 3 days and it was already done. it's a mirror to society, as fantastical as it may be. my favorite and tear-bringing episode was Ep 2 with North No. 2
Same can be said with A Place Further Than The Universe. One the best animes that came out in 2018 and was life changing for many, but did not get the popularity it truly deserves in the anime community.
So glad to see this video pop up on my feed! Caught this series as soon as it hit Netflix, such a good watch! The astro boy vibe was immediate and fun, but the art and pacing was what my soul needed. Just the right amount of parts to stay focused on the plot and make it a brief but episodic adventure. This is one I've been throwing at friends to put on their lists for a while now
I watched it recently. I put it off for a long time, it was such a beautiful experience. It has the best depiction of robots I've seen in fiction a great story. I never read or watch anything from urusawas work this was my first

I loved this so much when it released. Somehow I was luckily recommended it when browsing Netflix. I hadn’t watched a full anime in over a year and I took a peek at it, not knowing any of the history surrounding it. Then When I found out it was an urasawa adaptation I went from interested to it becoming the next thing I watched immediately. I was shocked that I saw almost zero chatter about it online.
I've seen Pluto listed on Netflix 100 times and had no idea what it was. I think I added it to my list, but I struggled to get past the title thumbnail to figure out what it was about. I'll watch it as soon as I'm finished with Pantheon.
Glad I wasn’t the only one who felt the ending was a bit bit of a hollow affair in that it was the only time when I was really reminded that this is a reimagining of an Astro boy arc, and that’s the main character, and now he’s gonna go hero the situation, plus a couple of other smaller things
One of my favorite anime. I'm a huge fan of Naoki Urasawa so I started it up almost immediately once it came out. As an autistic person, I've always been drawn to robot characters ever since I was a child. Needless to say I cried several times throughout the whole thing.
I never watched Astroboy but I LOOVED Pluto. I binged it and also reccomended it to my family and friends. I clicked on it because I thought that it looks like Monster and since I loved that story, I knew i wouldnt be disappointed.

Cyberpunk 2077 had a lot of the same themes and the expansion came out around the same time. I think it just got overshadowed in terms of the genre
I did notice it. It was amazing. I already knew the manga before watching it, and it did deliver everything I was hoping for. One of the best I have ever seen and most definitely in my top 3.
finally seeing the North No.2 piano be brought to life made me so happy.
Netflix should have put the title as Astro Boy: Pluto
DUDE I LOVE PLUTO. I’M SO SAD THAT IT NEVER COUGHT ON.
It's gonna take time for people to appreciate Noaki's work en masse. Monster has finally been getting some love over the last few years despite the anime being out since '04.
I know that I love Master Keaton.
It's insane to me, because the anime is such a great adaption, very faithful to the of work and just a labor of love, will never understand why some shows don't take off, when I watched it I thought it was an instant classic
also I thought the themes in the anime were never more relevant and current then now
Tuve que parar el video a la mitad para ir a ver la serie. Siempre me gustó Astroboy sin conocer el material realmente. Me gustaba su estetica. Gracias por presentarme esta nueva entrega. Volveré al terminar de verla.
Not 'unseen', my friend. That is by far, top 2 of the greatest things I have ever seen. And have been singing its praises since.
Exceptional video. Instant sub and will 100% watch pluto because of this video. Seriously great video, please keep making more like this.
Read 20th Century Boys, watched Monster, this one is next!!! Urasawa's writing is one of the best! Thanks for this!
Saw Pluto this year. Was the anime highlight of the year for me. Couldn't stop watching till it was done and it stayed with me long after.
absolutely criminal lack of attention
Modern anime fans don't watch anime outside of popular battle shonens, it's honestly depressing
I loved it man, I have watched it two three times and will continue to watch it often. I think people are missing out on a great show.
Every mangaka gets overworked to the point of exhaustion and ailment. Damn near All of our favorites have been on the brink of death
I didn’t know what Pluto was before this but after watching I’ll definitely consider it 👍
It’s truly that good!
This show was done so dirty. I was on Netflix one day, saw a new show called Pluto, and went, “wait, is that the Naomi Urasawa manga?”
Like, I had absolutely no idea it was getting an adaptation.
I got so deep into this anime that I dissociated thinking about it for weeks
If Pluto has a million fans, then I am one of them.
If Pluto has ten fans, then I am one of them.
If Pluto has only one fan then that is me.
If Pluto has no fans, then that means I am no longer on earth.
If the world is against Pluto, then I am against the world.
Also, great video! Wish this was more talked about.
If an anime requires brain, it's most likely not going to be very famous these days.
yes Netflix is well known for its big-brain user base
@@rumfordcyou didn't understand OP
@@Rooster_RicI think he was sarcastic. There's a reason people called Netflix and Chill instead of Netflix and Think or anything thag actually rhymes.
Just don't apply too much of your brain because the catastrophic inconsistencies of the narrative will destroy your appreciation of the series
The "big-brained" people were probably part of those who ignored this masterpiece.
wild how few people talked about this. this is my favorite manga ever and watched it immediately when it came out, and it's basically the most perfect adaptation ever made. and yet silence.
I only knew of Pluto because Monster was written by Urasawa, so when I saw it on Netflix I was so hyped about it, and then I watched an episode a day and... it was so amazing, easily in my top 5 anime. It's sad it didn't get much recognition, because it's wonderful all around.
Woah there Mighty Atom is just as deep, Urasawa did added layers to the original story but Tezuka was just as great if not more complex at times.
I never read or watch anything from urusawas work this was my first
I watched Pluto just bc of this video and golly I have to say you were spot on. This anime is truly a master piece
I can say that it was a great anime because it was. But for me, it was a snoozefest. My favorite episode was the one going over North 2.
I really enjoyed my time with Pluto, and I'm so glad someone made a video about Pluto.
Yeah, this was a masterpiece. Well written and animated. The North 2 episode was about as emotional as Anime can get.
I almost never go on Netflix. A few months ago I randomly decided to log back in and was mindlessly scrolling through the anime section and noticed an anime with an interesting thumbnail, Pluto. I watched it on a whim and was so blown away by how good it was. I'm glad it's getting more recognition.
After watching Monster, it's impossible to skip Pluto. Glad someone make a vid about it as the story / animation deserves praise. Thank you
it took about a year of convincing my anime fan friends and kids to finally watch it. they all said it was really good, and i should have listened to you. lead a horse to water...
pluto got me into urasawa’s work, i finally watched monster and read billy bat (which is peak). such a shame that it hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves
My boyfriend and I had out it on one day out of curiosity and I was absolutely shocked when I finished it, i absolutely love it. It needs to be seen by more people. It is art, I got so connected to the characters that when I was at the ending I was heartbroken. It is a must watch
dang, this anime has been at the top of my 'i absolutely need to watch this but i keep forgerting about it' for ever since it came out, thanks for the reminder!
The one thing about stories like this is that they might get famous to understand when they come out but the true beauty of this will be understood and mostly love later on in the future that's what a lot of animations My people his work has not gone in vain later on in history you'll see the most of the highest Glory that they'll give to this animation
I started watching this because of your video. I just finished ep5.
Its a true masterpiece, i'm blown away by it.
I've told everyone who might possibly watch an anime to watch it :)
Thank you.
I was so hyped for this and it didnt dissapoint, the art, the score, the writing. The kind of anime I'd been craving for a long time.
3:17 Something about this panel with all the formulas on the wall is so mesmerizing and interesting to look at haha. I thought it was graffiti at first.
I loved Pluto; saw it when it came out and wish it got more respect.
I watched Pluto on a whim when I came across it during a free month of Netflix membership, not knowing what it was. I was hooked pretty much immediately, its such an amazing anime
Underrated masterpiece!
North NR. 2 and the cherished memories piano song. Absolutely insane writing!
It´s so good! "Nothing can be born from hatred" the themes and characters are so amazing
So glad more people are talking about this show. It’s beautifully executed and deserves tons of praise and awards.
Glad I wasn’t the only one who felt the ending was a bit bit of a hollow affair in that it was the only time when I was really reminded that this is a reimagining of an Astro boy arc, and that’s the main character, and now he’s gonna go hero the situation, plus a couple of other smaller things
And it's a pretty devastating ending, it closes dry with a bittersweet feeling. 7 wonderful robots died because of our flaws as humanity.
Pluto is just amazing, I watch this with my wife when she first moved in and I still can{t forget the feeling it left in my chest.
I actually liked the 8 episode style. Made it more cinematic to me. I do hope they release some DVD version. This one is worth having.
So tragically underrated. I watched urasawa’s monster due to popularity by anime fans. Fans of monster told me how similar quality Pluto and 2oth century boys so I had to watch this when it came out. Never understood y it didn’t reach monsters popularity
It makes me happy that there's atleast one video essay talking about the anime
It's actually a 10/10 for me, no joke
Only watched cause the thumbnail. I knew what you were going to talk about and it made me sad. Pluto is easily one of the greatest anime ever made. I've never felt such emotional impact from an anime. Ah... what should have been...
Nice, I always wanted to read it and now I will drop the video and start reading it!
I feel like Netflix, bar exceptions like Dungeon meshi, is bad at promoting and streaming anime
Not seeing much discussion on this. And it's true, I doubt many anime enthusiasts are searching Netflix of all places for something new to watch very often at all.
This is unmistakably my favorite anime, it is so good, so deep and so well done.
