Actually I think that, because the characters are gorgeous polished crystals and their settlement being pristine clean is an intended feature, the ultra smooth, polished feel of the CGI just feels right. The same quality of CGI would not feel as good as it does if the topic was different. Still, awesome anime with awesome graphics.
Yeah, I think that the fact that the characters are almost all contain an element that is translucent really plays into the strengths of CGI, as well as all the dynamic camera work in the show.
Truly one of, if not my favorite anime of all time. I have a faint hope for more Land of the Lustrous content, but I think the studio is mostly focused on Beastars now because it brings in more revenue. Which is a shame. It has so much potential, and a new season would bring in so many new viewers.
@@Emetium it is incredible, kind of a tough read if you only start from where the anime left off though [but that might just be me] either way, the manga is Good.
Nice video. i saw other essays about this anime before, but i think you are the one to convince me to give it a chance. Also loved your grimgar video. keep up the good work
Pity it didn't get the attention. One glance and and inhuman cast immediate brought Toy Story to mind. Where the character choice lets them lean into what CGI can do very well.
over time we learned, complaining wont change sheit, so we just consume and get exited for next poroduct, than we consume and get exited for next product.. you get the point
man, you should try reading the manga if you liked the anime! Its really good, absolutly worth your while, and probably one of my favorite stories of all time (im serious! Its real peak!)
I watched this one not too long after it came out and I loved it! I gotta thank the contrarians on 4chan for recommending it, those bastards are actually right sometimes. Maybe I should start reading the manga...
@@Emetium Honestly with how good the animation is I can imagine it being a bit jarring but I'd like some closure for how the story ends, it's a real shame the anime never got continued
Finally finished my last read and pumped through the LotL manga in a few days, I really enjoyed it. Sometimes it was a bit hard to keep up with who was who, it's a shame the anime never got continued because their vibrant colour schemes would have really helped on that front but overall it was great and a very fun read.
I used to think I hate CGI, but then I realized, I just hate CGI done poorly and/or half-assed. If you actually spend time and effort on it, then it can look just as amazing as great drawn animations. Best example of it being Arcane. If you want few more examples where CGI doesn't suck ass, Girls Band Cry or DJD4 First Mix are good examples.
As someone who grew up with anime, yeah, no, it still really turns me off. “We” don’t complain about it, because a lot of us left. We’re bot rubbing shoulders anymore.
Nah dawg, cgi anime still looks scuffed af. The camera is low fps, which is the issue for the choppiness. Overall it comes down to how CGI is used and seen in Japan which affects the quality. CGI or properly 3d Animation in the west is looked upon fairer, thus the quality and budget end up being substantial. In Japan however, they're still huge fans of traditional animation. The reasoning for employing CGI, especially in the beginning was done as a way to lessen the animation budget (ie. Ajin, BBK/BRNK, Berserk, Attack on Titan). Realistically, just like how animation studios in the west have looked to Japan for inspiration and guidance, Japan needs to look to western animation studios on how to nail 3d, because they do it on par, if not on a level exceeding, with modern anime.
Choppiness doesn't matter if it's done with intention. That is what 2d animation is anyways. Art direction matters. If a show uses CGI it has to match the show, or have a very good reason if it doesn't. Studio Orange (Land of the Lustrous, Trigun Stampede, Beastars, etc) Does this very well. Berserk and others don't do this well. I wont disagree there. We need more studios to learn from what Orange. Some good 3d western movies are starting to go for a stylized "choppy" approach too. Puss in Boots: the last wish, Spiderman into the Spiderverse, The Bad Guys, off the top of my head.
To me the CG here just fits the show and never looked out of place. Sad the anime ended too soon.
Luv this anime and manga. Great one!!! Good story, good characters etc. Luv luv
houseki no kuni is AMAZING

Wow I didn’t even link the CGI working well because of them being crystals. Well done that’s very interesting
@@Emetium Thank you

I really do believe that it's all thanks to the hardware improvement and massive computational power that studios can have access to nowadays.
I absolutely agree I think we have a come a long way in technological advancements allowing studios to use CGI and make it not awful
The CGI was perfect.
I agree this anime blew me away with how pretty it was

I have heard really good things about it but I've also heard that is very dark and depressing which is holding me back from reading it.
I watched this one not too long after it came out and I loved it! I gotta thank the contrarians on 4chan for recommending it, those bastards are actually right sometimes.
Maybe I should start reading the manga...
I am happy to hear you enjoyed this masterpiece I am not actually sure how the manga compares to the anime if you read it and its good let me know

totally underrated, damn
Yeah it felt ahead of it's time
What took me out of it in episode one was addressing some girl as "him".

Fair enough
I...I don't blame you...(PTSD)

You say low fps when 2d is 24fps animat3d on two's so essentially 12fps withs some trickery
