It's crazy how rabid and toxic the people in the internet think they have the right to harass people just because they don't like the way the story headed.
The women using more male like pen names is an interesting thing. It's the reason why J. K. Rowling used that pen name instead of her actual name when releasing Harry Potter. Personally, as a kid, it never bothered me who wrote a story as long as the story was written well. I had already enjoyed plenty of books written by women like Little House on the Prairie or the Magic Treehouse series. I can definitely see how the social pressures of being a middle school boy would make some kids really prioritize looking cool to their peers at all times. Although, I actually don't think that many kids actually care that much and still read the books regardless of the author as long as it looked interesting to them.
Imagine people openly talk shit because you're anonymous. "Have you read the end of JJK? That shit was GARBAGE!" (I haven't read the end actually, but that's not the point)
Great video! I never really thought about that. It is really scary to think, how far people can go out of simple jealousy. Like, why do you care so much? The idea of not stepping out of the line is brought to another level there. Honestly, I think Japanese society is very terrifying in that regard.
I swear if gege ever takes off his mask for even a second in public he is getting sniped from every direction at once wich is probably why he’ll never do it
I feel like this also applies to anyone who want to be creative but want to keep their privacy. There are a countless amount of artists, vtubers, content creators that want to be know by their avatar and not with their face being out in the public. We have to respect that.
Regardless of why I respect an artist who doesn't want there fame to overshadow there art. At the end of the day you can love a piece of art without never knowing anything about the person or people who made it.
It's interesting how this is such a problem with Shonen Jump in particular. All of Shonen jump mangakas do not show face especially when young. Shonen Jump fanatics are the most obsessively deranged people. It's similar to Marvel fans. Marvel and Shonen Jump produce pretty generic standard stuff (with very few exceptions) to keep appealing to the same kind of people and they attract those obsessive fans who buy into the utter commercialization of art which then leads to the entitled behaviour.
Yeah like not saying that this never happens to mangakas of other genres but it's so telling that this is a huge issue with battle shounen titles especially. Just something about the fans
reason 1. I don't want to be bossy. 2. Face and gender have no bearing on whether the work is good or bad. 3. I don't want to be talked to on the street because I want to live a relaxed life. 4. I don't want to get involved in any kind of incident (To give an actual example, Akira Toriyama revealed his face and real name during Dr.Slump, so he got tired of being approached on the street.)

After the final chapter of MHA it’s best the author stays out of the public eye. Those weirdo DekuBaku fans would literally hurt him for not drawing a gay kiss
Many manga authors prefer anonymity because... Well, just look at Demon Slayer, Attack on Titan, My Hero Academia, etc. wherein fans want something to happen (gay relationships for one) but the author does not want it.
This is tangential, but the way Junji Ito is paraded around by Crunchyroll feels exploitive, instead of him being interested in the spotlight. I could be totally wrong, there’s just something uneasy about him always being interested crunchyroll promo.
You know MHA announced real ending in the final volume, vol 42th, and the author received tons of threats and hatred comments because the ending does NOT follow their wishes. (Mainly about Boy's Love relationship, which is obviously not possible for a Shonen manga in JUMP .......... so I have no idea why they disappointed so aggressively.
Who can blame them? If you’re that famous, any anonymity you can get can protect you from the public. Being a visual artist can give you an opportunity for more anonymity than say, a musician or any kind of public performer. Let them be as private as they can. It can save their lives, prevent them unneeded stress, and keep their mangas going as long as they can.
I have a odd theory about hiroyuki takei now I don't think he's a pedo but I believe he knew about rurouni kenshins creators interests because of ryu a character from shaman king who feels like a watsuki insert because a few things he does he is supposed to be 17 looks 30 , has a interest in young woman tries to ask out a 13 year old and a 11 year old now is this true I don't know , but Takei was watsuki assistant eichiro Oda was as well they may have known but this is just a theory I don't have any actual evidence this is at the core of it is just speculation on my part
The collab thing reminds me of "Kamikita Futago", which literally translates to "the Kamikita twins". Because they're twin sisters who draw manga together.
While I do get the overall understanding of why a lot of manna authors do this, what I don't get is why a vast majority of the west don't. Like you can name me any comic or novel written here in the U.S an I can guarantee you 90% of them have already shown their faces in public already. I want to say it's a cultural thing, but it's not like harassment doesn't exist here either. I just don't know honestly.
I never really wondered why they’d hide their faces I mean they must just want people to focus on the art rather than dig up their life story what I wondered more was why some of them chose to show their identity. I mean it’s nice for us fans to know the face of the author we admire but it’s more dangerous for the authors to share their identity so i feel like the cons are bigger than the pros in this case
Antisocials (criminals), which is not the same as a-social (people who don't mind being alone). Antisocials seem to behave as if their excuses could justify their actions. A crime like a threat doesn't stop being crime just because you have an excuse that's good according to you. Except someone who is going to behave that way won't think about something before doing it, they just have to locked in jail for the safety of others. On a more positive side: having an avatar is more fun that just a picture of yourself. Adds to the fun of manga as a whole.
They devote like 90% of their lives to manga. What little "free" time they have to go outside am sure is much more enjoyable if they can just anonymously go down to the shops or whatever without people recognizing and hounding them.
Remember the time mha fans threatened author for not making their ships canon? Remember the uproar that gojo death caused? Yeah, its just not safe for them
And there’s The author of JJBA, unanonymous and yet no one’s after his head. So no, it’s not about the fans and their craze, it’s about the avatar looking finer than their real life self.
Where as I think anonymity is a thing for these creatives, I actually think the initial reasoning is just cause of inspiration from other mangakas doing the same. early on certain mangakas would draw small adventures of themselves at the end of the mangas, with this a idea created little mangaka characters that would gain popularity like Akira Toriyama and the tori-bot. Next gen mangakas would get inspired by this and then think "what would mine be" and the cycle continues. I think you see this with a lot of online artists as well, myself included. Its a lot less about being anonymous and waaaaaayyyy more about inspiration from others, at least in the beginning.
Me, a western weeb thinking "us Americans are the most dangerous there is, we got guns and stuff" but no, I remember hearing about that anime studio getting burnt down because some fan was fed up with them... Didn't affect his pay, didn't feel like his beliefs were insulted, he just didn't want to wait any longer for the next season...
I think you’re referring to the Kyoto Animation arson attack. No, it had nothing to do with season being late. The arsonist was mentally ill and thought the studio had stolen his ideas.
There are as many thoughts and circumstances as there are people. If the manga artist won't reveal it themselves, leave them alone. A friend of mine is a professional manga artist who uses her real name, and she doesn't hide the fact that it's her real name. I used a pen name when I was drawing for doujinshi. That's because I wanted to create my own pen name. Many writers and manga artists are introverted and sensitive. Some are generous, but many don't like to be in front of people. It's because of these personalities that they choose to express themselves through writing and manga. There's no point in speculating or criticising from a Western perspective. Manga artists should be judged by their work.
I always feel really sad for japanese people they work so hard just to entertain us I salute them all 🫡🫡🫡they are the lost heroes I really want eiichiro oda to take rest his condition is not good and not only japan who works for 20 hrs even china and south korea as well I really want to say is that they must take care of themselves sometimes I wonder how their family members handle them
People around the world just keep pirating their creativity and say something really terrible against them and you will hear more about “even though I don’t pay the money, but I still want to say something against the author”
They remain anonymous for privacy and their own safety. There’s no need for the public to know them on a personal level. They don’t want to be celebrities and be stopped by fans in public. That’s understandable.
I think also it’s one of the few jobs where you could be wildly successful and remain anonymous. Other famous people who work in media mostly have to show their face eventually.
I really understand why so many manga artists would want to hide there face I once made a tic tok video just cutting with a sword and it got 3 million videos and I was so embarrassed I thought I was gonna die just knowing that many people have seen me
I've made webcomics and art online for a number of years, and unfortunately had to deal with one stalker in particular harassing me for almost 2 entire years. I completely understand why so many creators are anonymous or choose to be nowadays, because I'm absolutely one of them. Hell, it's made me scared about my art finding more of an audience. I have over 2K watchers, that's a lot of eyes on you, and sometimes I worry what their intentions are, what they're capable of doing if I ever upset them through no fault of my own, what they could do to people I care about. I had to break up with my girlfriend because of the situation with my stalker, I just didn't think or know if she gonna be safe around me anymore. Stalkers are the worst kind of people alive.
this was a very good some really good points expressed throughout I can completely understand why mangakas or really any creative would want to hide themselves sure you have some mangaka who show themselves such as tite kubo and araki but we unfortunately live in a time where fans of anime and manga can get really hostile and overly obsessive to the point of dangerous and also that they fail to see that at the end of the day there just people with there own lives outside of there work.

Although, I actually don't think that many kids actually care that much and still read the books regardless of the author as long as it looked interesting to them.
yeah but female writers were disrespected a lot in the industry
Some people don't like cameras and some people do like them and are classy immortal vampires, like Araki.
Araki understands he created such a good anime/manga that he isnt even scared of anythung
Imagine people openly talk shit because you're anonymous.
"Have you read the end of JJK? That shit was GARBAGE!"
(I haven't read the end actually, but that's not the point)
To let the audience to care about with their works , an Obvious classic reason
And the second one , Safety of course also to protect their privacy
Short answer : Crazy fans
Only in USA where you are forced to not be anonymous and people find it weird if you want to be
Regardless of why I respect an artist who doesn't want there fame to overshadow there art.
Just something about the fans
reason
1. I don't want to be bossy.
2. Face and gender have no bearing on whether the work is good or bad.
3. I don't want to be talked to on the street because I want to live a relaxed life.
4. I don't want to get involved in any kind of incident
(To give an actual example, Akira Toriyama revealed his face and real name during Dr.Slump, so he got tired of being approached on the street.)
How many alchemist was made by a woman that’s crazy. I had no idea in my opinion one of the best anime ever made.
For protection, it's that simple.
The scary thing about being a manga artist is that they get death threats.
I've heard that the MHA creator hates his own fanbase because of all the weird, sexual content the weebs make of the characters on the internet.
Well he does sexualize his own characters thou
He has every right to.
Don't believe everything you hear.
@@TheStruggler12Fangirls be like to the "sessualised girls": "hoW dArE yooo!?! She uh 1818181881819191 child!!" (Turns around and does the EXACT SAME THING to the BOY characters.) 🤷♀️
Because it means that the countless fans that send them death threats will have a harder time finding them.
“huh i wonder what Nobuhiro Watsuki did- oh. of course.”
Let alone manga or anime, even in other entertainment aspects like gaming or YouTubing, a lot don't show their faces, names or anything; reveals are a risk taken with responsibility
It's more surprising that more authors don't, fame makes it hard to keep your privacy and not having eyes on your personal life 24/7
Japan sounds like a crazy place. I don't blame Gege from hiding their identity.
This is tangential, but the way Junji Ito is paraded around by Crunchyroll feels exploitive, instead of him being interested in the spotlight. I could be totally wrong, there’s just something uneasy about him always being interested crunchyroll promo.
Investing in your channel early, keep it up my man
With how some of the My Hero Academia fans act online, I think it's mostly sensible.
I thought it was just for privacy reasons, god damn.
Because use your OCs as avatars is badass.
Jjk Fans with their “GEGE WHEN I CATCH YOU GEGE!” Bro that shit isn’t even funny let bro write his anime 😭😭
Being honest, I wasn't surprised about what Happened to Rurounei Kenshins author, just read his manga
@@Capeless-Cap i never read it, why would you not be suprise?
I've only ever heard good things about the story? Guess I'll bring it to the top of the pile.

Another banger of a video! I’ve been wondering also why so many manga authors do this.
Safety Reasons, the amount of people sending death threats these days is crazy
Antisocials (criminals), which is not the same as a-social (people who don't mind being alone).
Antisocials seem to behave as if their excuses could justify their actions.
A crime like a threat doesn't stop being crime just because you have an excuse that's good according to you.
Except someone who is going to behave that way won't think about something before doing it,
they just have to locked in jail for the safety of others.
On a more positive side: having an avatar is more fun that just a picture of yourself.
Adds to the fun of manga as a whole.
Hating on someone just cause ur a loser is hilarious to me same with people who threaten the author when they kill favorite characters
Gege said one of his reasons of choosing that avatar was "No one would hate a cat".
That aged well.
They devote like 90% of their lives to manga. What little "free" time they have to go outside am sure is much more enjoyable if they can just anonymously go down to the shops or whatever without people recognizing and hounding them.
often I wish I'd stay anonymous
Remember the time mha fans threatened author for not making their ships canon?
Remember the uproar that gojo death caused?
Yeah, its just not safe for them
And there’s The author of JJBA, unanonymous and yet no one’s after his head. So no, it’s not about the fans and their craze, it’s about the avatar looking finer than their real life self.
Well said
Also vinland saga's mangaka
you wonder why when you always hear about authors getting death threats after fans didnt like an ending.
The arsonist was mentally ill and thought the studio had stolen his ideas.
itagaki paru sensei's beastars💚
Hmm, now I see why Gege doesn’t show his face 😭
漫画家は漫画の売上の8%~12%の印税を受け取れます。例えば漫画が1000万部を突破した場合、5億円(400万$?)が手に入ります。
I just don't like my face so making a cute little avatar that looks nothing like me is a must lol
If you've ever met an anime fan irl you'd get it
I literally hear story’s of small RUclipsrs with like less than 12 k getting stalked…. It’s crazy out here if anonymous I can see y
Wow I never thought this was one of the reasons why Gege had to end jjk 🙂
Search at Yoshihiro Togashi, you must be Hunter first 😅
I always feel really sad for japanese people they work so hard just to entertain us I salute them all 🫡🫡🫡they are the lost heroes I really want eiichiro oda to take rest his condition is not good and not only japan who works for 20 hrs even china and south korea as well I really want to say is that they must take care of themselves sometimes I wonder how their family members handle them
People around the world just keep pirating their creativity and say something really terrible against them and you will hear more about “even though I don’t pay the money, but I still want to say something against the author”
They remain anonymous for privacy and their own safety. There’s no need for the public to know them on a personal level. They don’t want to be celebrities and be stopped by fans in public. That’s understandable.
9:42 I like your point here, and I think an anime that expressed that sentiment well was Re:Creators. Interesting premise, to say the least.
I think also it’s one of the few jobs where you could be wildly successful and remain anonymous. Other famous people who work in media mostly have to show their face eventually.
"GEGE, WHEN I CATCH YOU, GEGE"
Hmm, idk
Not my GOAT Araki🗣️
I think Gege’s pretty smart for staying anonymous considering the jjk fans…
this was a very good some really good points expressed throughout I can completely understand why mangakas or really any creative would want to hide themselves sure you have some mangaka who show themselves such as tite kubo and araki but we unfortunately live in a time where fans of anime and manga can get really hostile and overly obsessive to the point of dangerous and also that they fail to see that at the end of the day there just people with there own lives outside of there work.
Really good video ❤
Just found your channel now I gotta subscribe. I’m loving the content, bro. Just please, for the love of God make sure you got some spoiler warnings.😂😂😂
