    5:39 The guidelines for carbohydrates
Today we're going to talk about sugar and diabetes, and what I would eat if I had diabetes. Diabetes and other blood sugar related problems are among the most common health problems I see.
Sugar increases insulin, which lowers the sugar in the blood and puts it in storage as fat. Carbs and sugar or carbs mixed with protein raise insulin, but fat does not raise insulin.
We do not need carbohydrates. A healthy diet should consist of fats and a moderate amount of proteins. A diabetic diet should have high quantities of fat. Sugar stimulates hunger, and you crave more food. 40 % of all heart diseases are related to excess sugar. Keeping your blood sugar levels in control is a primary objective for a healthy body.
What I would eat if I had diabetes:
    • Low carbs
    • Moderate protein
    • High fats
The current recommendations for carbohydrates based on the American Diabetes Association are 45-60 grams of carbohydrates per day.
I believe blood sugar problems can be improved if the right foods are eaten, but overall sugars and carbs must be reduced. Fats can be increased.
Correction: at 0:26 - I mentioned that the "High sugar diet or high carbohydrate diets are really high-fat diets" The correction is that high sugar diets and high carb diets are producing high amounts of fat. They are not high-fat diets.

Thank you Dr. Berg, your advice changes lives. I was diagnosed with diabetes in August of 2018 with an A1C of 14.1, the Dr said that was the highest she had seen. I was put on metformin with no conversation about my diet or anything else as a recommendation. I was determined to find a way to address this without medication. I found your channel and started using your recommendation. In November I was down to 7.1 and this month(February) am measured as 5.1. There is so much confusion about diabetes and proper treatment and I am very grateful that I found your channel, thank you for all you do.

I stopped the metformin after 2 weeks of taking it, it was a low dose of 500mg and didn't seem to have much effect. I doubled the dosage to 1000mg still with minimal effect and blood blood sugar levels of 300 to 400 range. As soon as I started IF with a somewhat of a light keto diet( I dropped all sugars and carbs) my blood sugar plummeted to normal levels within a month.

I'm in Australia and our diabetic association puts out a diet with eating bread 4-6slices/day if I remember correctly. The Metformin does very little but I came down in my sugar levels to practically normal with 6Wks eating only protein and veg. I ate fat in the form of Aioli (non sugared brand). Avocados are fats too remember. No fruit. No Carbs. I lost 10kg/22lbs. Metformin is a business. Big Pharma is the top business in the world and Cancer the 2nd or they were in the 1970's. I'm glad this Dr Berg has the balls to say the Diabetic Associations keep you diabetic. Big Pharma is to blame.

Thank you, Dr. Berg. By assisting my wife as a Nutritionist in the System, I took a lot of courses in nutrition to assist her with her papers since we have small children. I began writing papers and interacting with Doctors, PHD's in Nutrition and you are the correct one. I have heard them admit that my position concerning blood sugar was correct and it needs to be corrected to the public like you are indicating but they are afraid of the Educational System and Big PHRMA. I would say to the diabetics and those who are prediabetic to go slow and then once on the correct diet, stay on that diet and you will be ok. At first, you may feel your body starting to get to the adjusting point and you may feel sleepy or low energy or even high energy too. Thank you, my friend, you are a truth-teller and I am happy we have the right to interact with persons such as you. Those guidelines were not correct when they made them concerning all those carbohydrates and they knew it but could not stop policy. They bring in the HPB medication along with Metformin and it is nothing but a common circle of keeping someone on medication. In our family two brothers one very much older (20 years) married two sisters (again one 20 years older). Diabetes on that one side of the family has killed many of them. My Mom's sister died at 41 years of age due to diabetes. The diabetes will attack females in one generation, attack males in another generation and because they could not be disciplined or taught to challenge( One of my cousin's wife attempted to challenge the physician on her husband and the Physician ordered her out of the room), so many never challenged what the physician was telling them especially on the diet, they died at an early age. I was able to reverse that situation because I have always been very disciplined and even my primary care physician complimented me in front of other research physicians because of being able to reverse the diabetic stance in my body. Keep telling the truth. It will save lives and also allow persons to have a better quality of life too. God Bless Always !

Sugar is the cause of diabetes, obesity, fatty liver disease, hypertension, cardiac artery disease, kidney disease, etc. Sugar (in the form of high fructose corn syrup) is America's #1 cash crop. There are millions to be made in making you sick and then treating you with harmful drugs. God bless Ahmurica. LOL. Ever wonder why Republicans are against food labeling and that sort of thing? Approving abortion through the ninth month is infanticide, and Democrats not only passed that in NY but the Democrat Governor of NY, in celebration of late term abortion ( which only 13% of Americans support) ordered pink lights turned on the World Trade Center and other NY landmarks ....has there ever been a more destructive, sick political party that seeks to destroy this country, than the Democrat Party.

Doctor put me on metformin on the first visit without asking me about my diet or telling me what to avoid. 2 weeks later. i asked hin if I'll ever be free, doctor looked at me and said no. My heart sinked. I thought I heard him wrong. He said I'll always be on tge meds. After watchong this video, I have hope and for the first time sibce then I xan see the light and a happy future with my family. My A1C is 10.5. My glucose levels are in the 200-399. They used to be in the 400-525 for the first week of diagnosed. I'm starting the intermittent and KETO diet today. Current wight is 168lbs. I will update in 1 month. I don't need luck.

But balance in the key. Even if you eat high protein, it can worsen your insulin resistance. Glycemic load calculations can help us to consume low amounts of chocolates/sweets every day. Insulin response depends on how much sugar we consume regardless of whether we consume complex carbs or refined sugar. Complex carbs like beans also cannot be consumed in large amounts.

I want to cry. I’ve been Type 2 for 20 years (I am about to turn 43). Ive been morbidly obesemy entire adult live, and I have PCOS as well as fibromyalgia, and possibly lupus.
I’ve been on insulin for 10 years. I was losing control on my glucose numbers, needing more and more medication. A year ago I was requiring the top dosage of Janumet twice a day; as 80 Units of Lantus each night along with 3 doses of 60units of Novorapid per day. I went on a plant based (not entirely vegan) diet, and made real progress. There was a traumatic death in my family and I fell of the wagon.
No doctor ever suggested more than losing wait and not eating anything with carbs or fat. Even when I ate almost nothing, my numbers spiked.
Over the past year I have lost 26kgs (I’m 5ft 2inches). But my numbers are no lower.
The biggest change I made was secretly going off insulin in March of this year. I’m eating much less, but my Dr is a pro-Atkins/Paleo and thinks I should never eat fruit. But fruit didn’t make me fat. What made me fat was my childhood of 80’s bread and “meat and 3 veg” diet.
And possibly...insulin? Which I’ve asked 3 GPS and 2 diabetic nurses. And all have scoffed and told me that there was no way that insulin had caused me to lose weight.
I feel defeated and honestly, betrayed by doctors. 😢

Honestly I never read the label. After 15 yrs as Type 1 and bringing my numbers down by conrolling with insulin and then getting fatter by the day, my dietictian says
"Insulin is the fat storing hormone ya know. But your numbers look great!" WT? I also tried fasting and after a week my blood sugars raised had to take insulin to control, I thought I was breaking the fast by taking more insulin ( just storing more fat), so I gave up. Was I wrong? What to do?

She ate very little yet some foods may have had the hidden sugars. She tried and the doctors would depress her and give her more meds.
😔Sadly...My sweet mom is with JESUS now. I wish we could have learned what was happening. You explain it so well. I kept telling those doctors she did not need all those meds...meds destroyed her organs!

Dr. Berg, I can't thank you enough for helping me find the solution to my weight problem and my type 2 diabetes.
Two years ago I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes when my sugar read 350+. Which wound up producing a 12.7 A1C.
I was put on the maximum amount of Metformin and an after eating medication that I can't think of right now to get my sugar under control.
I was also directed to go on a high fiber, high protein diet.
I found it impossible to stick with the diet because I was hungry all the time.
Since discovering your videos my life is changing for the better. I started going on KETO about 2 months ago and over the past two weeks I have gotten down to one meal per day.
I'm down 32 pounds have much more energy, no longer ravenous and I haven't taken any diabetes medicine in close to six months and since going on KETO my morning sugar is consistently in the 70's to mid 80's.
    I'm 6 feet tall , I'm 52 years old and I drive a truck for a living.
I started at 350, and am now down below 318 with a goal of eventually reaching 200 -220.
Again many thanks and GOD bless you!!!

Thank you Dr. Berg, I am hoping to reverse my diabetes with the help of you and others on youtube. Your channel is most likely going to save my life. What a world we live in, where social media trumps a trip to the local physician.
