In this in-depth video, we’re going to talk about the deeper cause of diabetes. I’m going to discuss the relationship between diabetes and insulin, and what you need to know about the foods you eat.
Sugar controls the balance of insulin. Insulin has many functions, but one function is to act as a cellular key to allow glucose to go into the cell. Another function of insulin is to lower sugar levels.
Diabetes is an insulin deficiency. You can have a situation where the body makes too much insulin, which causes your cells to ignore it. This can result in diabetes.
    What causes insulin to increase?
    • Too many carbohydrates and refined sugars
    • Protein or amino acids can cause a small increase in insulin
    • Adding sugar and protein together can double the insulin production
    • Just eating, in general, can increase insulin
    • Cortisol (stress hormone) can cause an increase in insulin
    • Saturated fats may NOT cause an increase in insulin
By understanding and applying the points I’m going to cover in this video, you may be able to manage your insulin resistance and help address the deeper causes of diabetes.

I am 22 years old and I am a diagnosed Type 1 diabetic. I have to take insulin since I am 12 years old, so for 10 years I’ve had to inject myself multiple times a day, EVERY SINGLE DAY.
I am on healthy Keto now for 2 weeks. This is the 5th day in a row on which I didn’t inject myself a single unit. NOT ONE. I wake up with blood sugars of 90 mg/dl and they stay totally stable throughout the day! Dr Berg you’ve changed my life. I don’t know what to say! I am absolutely speechless and I’ll be forever grateful for the invaluable knowledge you share with the world everyday! ❤️❤️

Thanks to you I have cured my diabetes simply by changing my diet and getting rid of all sugar and other foods that contain sugars. After 12 years of taking 2000mg of Metformin and injecting myself 3 times a day with insulin. I am now officially free from all these drugs and live a much happier and healthy lifestyle. Though I must give God all the glory as he led me to you and others on youtube for help. But I must thank you for your wealth of information that has helped me achieve my goal. I have (without trying) lost excessive weight and now stable at my right weight for my height. My G.P. and Diabetic educator are astounded by the BGL blood test results and told me to keep doing what I'm doing.
    Thanks again Dr. Eric Berg
God Bless you for helping me.

I'm Asian people from Borneo Island. I agree that carbs can cause diabetes but my older folks like my parent don't have Diabetes though eating 3 meals of rice a day. I think it's because they actually burn the glucose the whole day working in the farm. Many athletes also take more carbs to compete. Now it seems there's no problem with carbs if you are active person but it can cause problem if you sedentary because you don't burn the sugar.

I just watched a documentary that was implying that 'sugars' / carbohydrates were not the problem...but consumption of meats/ eggs and dairy. I had to watch Dr. Berg again to understand what's really happening. I was diagnosed with pre pre insulin resistance and so followed strictly a keto/intermittent fasting diet. After 4months I dropped 4kgs (I wasn't overweight- just very tired) and my insulin level dropped to normal range and I felt a lot more energetic. I really believe there's so much confusion out there, that people don't know which way to go. But I believe Dr. Berg is correct about the cause...and the cure. There's a real war on meats/ eggs, right now. Yes processed anything is not good. But healthy meats, good butter and good oils do not raise blood suger/ insulin as many 'doctor's are claiming. Thank you Dr Berg for speaking truth.

One remark I would like to make about this video is that I very rarely hear proper distinctions made between type 1 and type 2 diabetes, they are similarly linked to a dysfunction in your pancreas as it relates to the production of insulin... But they are very different in terms of causes, onset, management, and the impact of proper nutrition. Just some feedback! Have a great day and thanks for the ongoing commitment to educating people on Insulin!

This only applies to type 2 diabetes right? Type 1 can be caused by the same mechanism but is usually an autoimmune problem, your immune system fully develops at 8 years old.
I became type 1 literally out of nowhere 2 weeks after my 8th birthday, I did not eat much refined carbs and never had sugary drinks or even snacks in between meals to cause this.
There is however an old saying about diabetes "the sweetness has gone from your life" at 6 years old my mum and dad got divorced and I didn't see him much, NOT because he wasn't trying but because my mother was beyond difficult with the whole custody situation.
Funny thing is she's always blamed my dad for me becoming diabetic.
Nobody in my family tree has ever had diabetes except my nans grandad who had late onset type 2 diabetes diagnosed when he was in his 60s, but this was during the 70s, I was diagnosed in 96.

Chris Harkin. There is a lot to the body mind connection. Your mind and body are not separate. You may want to explore some counseling or therapy especially metaphysically. You might want to read Louise Hay's book, "You Can Heal you Life." Of course, diet has a tremendous affect on our health too. I know l developed fibromyalgia because of traumatic events in my life. It's also very weird that my father wore glasses to drive and when he died ( I was 11 yrs), l needed to wear glasses a couple of years after that (l was 13 yrs).

You forgot the transmission between the insulin receptor and the so called door to open for the glucose. If the cell is lacking certain minerals the communication cannot take place and the door doesn't open

Hello Dr. Berg, I am really happy that I came across your channel and thank God for your existence. I am from India. My mother is Type 2 Diabetic, aged 62 and with impaired kidney function. Will intermittent fasting and keto diet hamper her kidney fuction?

I was diagnosed with insulin dependent diabetes in 1994. I stopped taking it regularly over ten years ago. I have no damage to my organs, nerves, etc. The only one symptom i have of diabetes is the high blood sugar. I've been a guinea pig for doctors and endocrinologists. "Still in the honeymoon period" i don't even know what to do any more.

Ask yourself, do people become diabetic after going low carb? If that was the case we'd know it by now..

Awesome video... However, you didn't mention how the Liver and Pancreas communicate to produce Insulin... You discussed it in a video along time ago and I've been following that advice... I have been working on my Fatty Liver to control my insulin and it's been working very well... My Liver function went from 280 down to 151 (my last blood test). And following that, my A1C is back down to 6.2 (if I remember right). I still take Metformin once a day and only 2 X 500 mg, but I take several supplements: (daily basis) Vitamins E, K&D, Multi-vitamin, C (High quality), High Potency B's, Silymarin, Herring Roe - fish oil, Serrapeptase, Nattokinase and a few others (not on a daily basis).
I should mention that I am Not on a fully Ketogenic Diet yet, but do intermittent fasting (one semi-large meal/day). I attribute the improvement in my Diabetes to the intermittent fasting and several other factors, all of which you have discussed... Thank you so much for your videos :-)

How can you know when you no longer need Metformin? How can you know when a low reading on blood sugar is really low because of diet or low because of medication?

Thanks, Doc... I have been following Your advice for some time now (approx. one year). I have gone from 340 lbs. to 205 lbs. My diet consists mostly of all-organics: primarily 12 eggs per day with 4 oz. unsalted sweet butter, and an occasional 4oz. patty of organic beef hamburger (as a treat for a hard work-out). My training consists of a three-hour weight-lifting session, done six days per week! At the age of 61, I am able to handle weights that I was able to move in my teens through 30’s! For 21 years, I was an insulin-dependent diabetic! I have not had any blood-work performed recently; however, my daily glucose testing has gone from the high 300’s to around 120 on average, with absolutely no drugs or insulin (Sorry Big Pharma👍🏻😄)! I also should give credit where it is due to Vince Gironda(RIP) as well! He has advocated this diet, supplemented with weight-training! My sincerest thanks to You Doc, and to the memory of Vince, as well! To Good Health and Long Life!👍🏻😄💪🏻
