I've been following you for a while and you have been one of my favorites for a while. However, one of the biggest criticisms of you was your abrupt bashing of vlogs and youtube culture. I thought it was a mistake even though I understood. So I was glad when you warmed back up to youtube a few months later. You had dialed back your pretentiousness a bit.
This video really shows how much you've matured. Before, you thought you had matured, but you were so pretentious about it. This feels much more genuine.
Maybe you didn't choose the best path to reach the point you are, but you have reached this point and you've learned along the way.
    Thanks, Bertie

Vlogs are no different from film, more time is spent on these legacy 'films' but films are about telling a story, and vlogs do exactly that. The word vlog just sounds stingy and shit but still a video log is a way of telling a story, a happening of events. It's just modern. Watch Casey Neistat, he will make you happy. He is extremely good at explaining these things.

Vlogs too are kind of like a modern journal which for many authors were regarded at a high level. Vlog scan become a bit formulaic but it's what you do with those basic conventions that's interesting and it can be quite artful too.

PLEASE do talk about Rocks That Bleed cos I loved that film so so much and I need to hear about it yesssssss!
Only problem is that I had no idea you were so young (idk why?) and hearing you talk about this stuff will make me simultaneously in awe and depressed at how utterly unaccomplished I am

  • @PrincessaAnastasiya

I'm a very new subscriber, but this was so wonderful. The clarity and awareness you get from looking in retrospect is often only achieved...through looking in retrospect. There's no sense in wasting energy on regrets, when regret is based on the wrongful assumption that everything you are and everything you have would remain even if you changed the course of a few things in the past. You are the product of your experiences and choices, and it was beautiful to listen to you retrace this revelation and value your past choices for bringing you to this moment of awareness. I show the following Ira Glass quote to anybody that will listen, because it's brilliant, and what you said about creating something excellent on a foundation of work you're not proud of, and thus wearing that history as a badge of honor, reminded me of it. In any case, this was so lovely, in the lovely way that sometimes only simple things can be (another insight acknowledged in this video which I wholly agree with).
“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”

    possible video ideas for you:
    - your thoughts on the sudden surge of filmmakers on youtube
    - thoughts on casting your girlfriend/boyfriend in your films. e.g. savannah
    - can youtubers really act or are they just comfortable in front of a camera?
    - the process of casting
    - people you admire in the film industry
    - ciaran obrien, why he is like the only proper youtube cinematographer?
    - top 10 films
    - the process of writing a feature length script, do you work with others to make it better?
    - the auteur theory, you have a lot of control in making your films. you are a director, actor, editor. is it sometimes hard to juggle all of these things at once?
    - what is the future of cinema? do you think it will ever die out due to netflix and piracy online?
    - film awards and recognition from the film industry, does it really matter?
    - top ten youtube filmmakers

Respect you a lot for this man, I've recently put my vlogs as unlisted because I'm simply to shy and just feel straight out embarrassed. I think if you've still got that drive for vlogging just like you do filmmaking then you should keep it up until it reaches it's tether. Sure your old vlogs may seem immature or silly but you shouldn't have been ashamed. People who watch your content respect and look up to you, I think it's great that you've just 'let it be'! that's actually the second time I've done that need to stop, but honestly well done. And keep it up, also 'Rocks that bleed' behind the scenes type thing would be really cool, love that one! :)

I was about 14 when I had first starting watching your videos (I am almost 18 now) and at that time I was extremely vunerable and easily influenced by media, I had been watching many youtube videos and convinced myself I would never be as good as the people who made them. I found your youtube account and watched some of your videos and I suddenly felt normal again and it was legitimately on the basis that we share a chin dimple, it sounds silly I know and I have no idea why I'm sharing this, but as a young 14 year old girl seeing someone obtaining spotlight in the media who shared the same facial features as what I have extremely changed how I viewed myself and gave me the confidence to break out of the shell I had so early confined myself to. Listening to you speak now and say the things I had been feeling in way that is fisible to understand has once again made a small influential impact on the way I will look at things. Thankyou!

It's great that you've managed to voice this internal struggle that a lot of artists go through, I guess I'm going through something slightly similar. After university I got too caught up with the idea of trying to make "perfect" photography... which meant that it was really hard for me to make anything for a year and a half. Since I let go of that and started taking pictures for my own enjoyment, it's been a lot easier. Good luck with editing 'Let it Be', can't wait to see it.

you are definitely right up there with my favourite youtubers because i've always felt that you truly spoke it how it was and you talked to us and not at us, you didn't have these huge bright lights and this music in the background to make everything seem brighter and happier, you just made content that was down to earth and was relatable. And because you are my age (only a few days older i think i can't remember actually) it was easier for me, someone who felt out of place and mature beyond her years, to relate to someone like yourself. I've been enjoying your content for years and i get so happy when I see one of your short films because they're always so deep but funny and inspirational. But i'm happy you're deciding to vlog every now and then because that can be important for your own mental health especially as you are someone who is in the social media flow.
I hope some of what I said made sense but just know that you are an amazing film maker and you'll only get better with experience and that you should cherish that older things you made because they are what brought you here to this level
    Thanks for being great

Hey Bertie. I am also DESPERATE, like seriously yearning to start a short film project. However, I can't find actors, especially those who are not the same gender as me.
I no longer do drama at school and don't hang around with an 'artsy' crowd. I do out of school drama, but am not super close with these people and neither are the few school friends that want to be involved.
I would really like to create a project during lunch or my college frees, and have a few pretty well formed ideas...Suggestions anyone?

+AllThingsSquare lots of people are in your position, my advice would be join the local film network groups on facebook and just meet and help fellow filmmakers in your area. i've done this with great success, met a lot of interesting and fun people who have the same passion as me (film) and helped a fair few people make short films.

    • @itssophieclouise
      @itssophieclouise 8 лет назад

+AllThingsSquare Same here. Sometimes I guess you just have to be patient, make projects on your own and eventually you will likely meet people who have the same desire to create film projects as you. If you really want make something do it, even if you start off small it's better to start somewhere rather than putting your ideas aside completely :)

I'm so glad you have had this epiphany, I watched your videos long before your first film and yet I still loved everyone of them, your art is simply that and it deserves merit, your blogs though allowed an insight into your being and it's been quite a while since we've had a look in and so I'm glad! I would love to see a video about tick where it hurts, I know it's really quite old but it really touched me, I've probably watched it at least 15 times. Thank you for coming back!

+Bertie Gilbert , your films are very inspiring to me. I cannot believe you are 18 and have already created such a legacy. I understand your struggles with not always being the most proud of whatever you produce. Sometimes I think art has to be chaotic and we should create for the sake of creating, because somewhere out there that stupid little vlog you may have made could have captured such a delicate moment. I'm so happy to hear that you have had this awakening. Everything you have produced to date, I still use as inspiration for my journey. Don't be ashamed of anything. Thank you for being so candid and sharing this with us all. The search for perfection is utter insanity when there is no objective definition of perfect. We are all running around like chickens with their head cut off in the search of 'perfect'. THANK YOU BERTIE.

I am so so proud, happy and excited for you - and as someone who's been subscribed for years and years and can so relate to this journey it broke my heart to see you struggling. It really means a lot that you have shared your art over the years, in whatever form it's taken, so really excited you've "awakened" and can see how valuable *all* of it has been :)
So excited as always to see your next project (be it film, vlog, anything), all the best, and here's to all of us who have struggled with confidence, self image and doubt. Thank you for sharing :)

i'm so happy that you had this awakening. when you changed and started focusing on films, i missed the vlogs. i absolutely loved your films, but i still felt sad that you had removed most of your videos from your channel. i used to go back and rewatch your videos, but suddenly they were gone. i'm so happy that you've rewatched them and rediscovered how good your videos were before you started making films. even before you started making films, i felt like your videos had depth and meaning. i'm so happy that you're now going to do both. i think you're great and the things you create are so so so good.

this made me so happy to watch!! from seeing you go through that phase when you were 16 and to where you are now and to come back round and make a video like this. this has made me feel very nostalgic myself, and i am so glad that you are happy and well. when you did take all your vlogs off of here, although i was sad and didn't agree with what you said, i understood why you did it. you changed a lot in that time, it's refreshing to see how much you've truly matured. i am very glad to see you in this capacity again, bertie

This resonates so well with me. I was obsessed with hiding my original videos just because I was embarrassed by them. I've felt this way for so long but as of lately like yourself I've learned to embrace them (I'd say within the last month). I totally understand what you mean by thinking too much/being too aware because I went through a long period of that (pretty much the past few years). I'm so happy with where I am now/going to be (I too have wanted to make films/more videos but I was too much of a perfectionist to even make them. It's sad..but that's a whole other topic) Anyway I've hoped to be in this mindset for a long time and I'm so glad you too have come around. It's very liberating. Would love to talk someday. -Ted

You have really motivated me because I want to make short films also, I can't really take off because I don't have any friends who are interested in this as seriously as I am. So I just wanted to tell you how happy I am about you showing your more natural side, and for motivating me so much.

I'm so happy you've come into this realization. I would say there are types and types of vlogs, but yours were always special, enjoyable, funny, but most importatly I think they suited you. You werent lowering yourself for the masses, you were just putting out there what you wanted to have out there, you were thinking out loud to a camera and there is something really special about that. I know you are a real person, but this kind of vlogs to me, are like a character being developed over time, it is your character and it's a beautiful story to tell as well . Welcome back! See you around.

(Pt2) I am so happy you have finally come to terms with yourself without pushing away views that you knew in your heart weren't true. Like you said we all make mistakes and I am so shoot you have posted this so we can see who you really are because if you create characters to create respect for individuality, then we're going except you because we love these characters, and you need to learn to respect yourself more to be happy with yourself, rather then other people. I'm glad you posted this because it has some many messages of mistakes that are made and how we can learn and grow and it really just made me so happy. I know this message is really deep but I really love watching your films and exploring more personalities and understanding more emotions through your character and I'm glad however we can still get to know you, and that you have learnt to respect yourself. Anyway thank you for your amazing films!
