I love how the Beatles era they prefer shows what they're looking for in life. He likes their more political and progressive music because he's looking for a direction, a purpose in his life. She likes the older, more cheerful era because she's just looking for happiness to fight the fact that she's dying. It's beautiful, really.

The foreshadowing is insane. “Martha My Dear” by the Beatles is about Paul’s dog. Death was going to shoot the dog in the beginning. Martha dressed as a dog. Martha was dying the whole time. 🤯

Wolfania i took it as a visual representation of how martha was feeling like he was ripping her apart and the buzzer was going off because it wasn’t gentle, it was abrupt and painful.

I think the symbolism in Dodie's dog costume is that she was mentioned to be "just some dog," which hints to Death killing Ringo because he was of less importance compared to Dodie. And the fact that she likes the Beatles earlier music because it was simpler tells us she was more child-like and simple minded, just like a dog. She dressed up like one because that's what Carl views her as, a joyful, happy creature who is just a shell. But she was dying, and the dog was gonna die, but they both seemed happy even though their deaths were near. Idk, just an idea.

      but they both what?

  • @mayap2724
    @mayap2724 7 лет назад +1860

Ok, theory number two. Death doesn't really exist. Death is just the elephant in the room. It's the big question that they need to talk about. Martha is dying but Martha and Carl don't want to face it. They keep putting it off. In one scene Martha and carl fight about whether or not they want to keep death. This represents that Martha has already accepted she is going to die whilst carl is struggling harder then Martha to come to terms. The character of Death is just a tool to help them confront the questions they don't want to face. Death isn't apathetic but she doesn't understand how the world works, just in the way that death doesn't care what's going on in a persons life when they die. I could go on and on and on. Brilliant film Bertie!

She said she did the head tapping habit when she's anxious about death. And then she said it was specifically around the word "cancer". That made me so sad.
And her facial expression when she was making a cheer to Death with carl literally broke my heart. You can see the role is more than just a skin to walk in to. She already lives in that skin.

my favourite part is when carth (?) and martha were talking in the hallway while death was playing the surgery game, that's really strong symbolism right there. as they kept talking, death kept taking all the intestines out, and pressed on the sides so it buzzed (signifying the hurt). at the very end, right before martha says 'can we talk about it later?', she takes the heart out.

In the scene that Martha is talking to death about the Beatles music she says "I honestly like to think they never broke up" did you put that line in there to talk about Martha and Carl's relationship? She says it so wistfully and it foreshadows the ending nicely. You can tell that Martha is the one that broke up with carl and it leaves you wondering why Martha still romanticizes the idea of being together with carl.

I haven't listened to The Beatles either, but so far (11:22 mins in) my interpretation is:
Bertie and Dodie's characters' relationship is drawing parallels to The Beatles' discography. Dodie's character preferring the "Honeymoon stage" of her's and Bertie's relationship (when things were youthful, blissful and more innocent). Bertie's character prefers the more "adult" parts of a relationship; hence his admiration for the darker, more complex, later Beatles stuff.
Stream of consciousness up until the end:
To a foreigner of life (Savannah's Death character), to live or love is absolute torture. The human story is one of pain and misery. She sees "the _gift_ of life" as being more of a _curse._
Conversely, to natives of life (Bertie and Dodie's characters), humans rely on death to derive meaning from life. We need contrast; another plane of existence, or lack there of, to juxtapose our own. Life doesn't have value if it's in infinite supply.
I may be way off, but that was just my interpretation.
    Loved the film 👏 👏 👏

Martha being painted as a dog has a lot to do with symbolism which isn't the most obvious, but another thing I noticed was that the character Martha was perhaps named after Paul McCartney's sheepdog. There is also the song "Martha My Dear" on the White Album, which is some of the Beatles' later work.

This is such a genuinely beautiful piece of art. It's like poetry in a film. Artistic, symbolistic. It's so wonderful to see dodie in it. Most films she's in she looks so happy but in this she's more naturally how she is. Pure art. 10/10

    (kind of) SPOILER:
I like how Martha and Carl's taste in the Beatles' music perfectly describes how they viewed their relationship - Martha liking the "earlier years" when it was 'happier' and 'less jaded' and how that parallels her falling out with Carl. And then Carl who likes their later stuff because it felt more complete and their earlier stuff were leading to it, reflecting the potential he saw in their failed romance, unable to let it be.
Less of a spoiler than it is foreshadowing, really.

Interesting but I thought it was to mirror their opinions on life, how Martha wants to keep things light and doesn't want to factor in the seriousness (death) and how Carl sees the seriousness (death) as important and needs to factored in to the way we live to give it weight or "more instruments" as he says. Also how Martha begins to see this at the end makes me think she now might enjoy the Beatles later stuff ☺️

Spoiler I guess but, I really adore the suttle hints you pick up on once you've watched the film more than once. Martha gets very shocked when she hears the name Death, and then she gets very sad when they toast to Death. She stays silent once Death says "you don't believe that", because she knows she is gonna die because she has cancer. There's so many hints and metaphors and the film as a whole ties together so perfectly. I love it.

This is a very in-depth analysis of the RUclips film Let It Be, by Bertie Gilbert. If you haven't seen it already then I would DEFINITELY recommend it, as it is an incredible film, and this post will have A LOT of spoilers. I'm going to go into a bit of detail about what I think each part of the film is symbolic of. I'm probably not correct at all, but this is just how I interpret it.
    The film
Martha died in the film- So if you've watched it, then you'll know that we only find out that Martha is dying, but we never actually see her die. I have a theory that she actually DID die, only that the film is seen through Carl's mind, and that he is unable to process this tragedy. We see it through metaphors and symbols, all representing a different part of the death.
Meeting Death- I believe that this is symbolic of Martha finding out that she has cancer, and how she knows that death is with her.
Talking to death in the bath- Perhaps Martha questioning why she has to die early.
When death tells Carl that Martha is dying- I feel as though this could be symbolic of Martha's death. How it's only just sunk in the fact that she's gone, and he can't get her back. It's announced so abruptly, that it could mean the death was very quick and unexpected, possibly before she was predicted to go. When he gets angry at Martha for not telling him I think that could be interpreted as one of the stages of grief.
When Carl says he hopes Ringo dies first- I like to interpret this as him saying that he hoped that the dog (named ringo) would die before Martha.
Liking their earlier/later stuff- A recurring theme in the film is that Martha likes the Beatles' earlier stuff, whereas Carl prefers their later music. This could be a metaphor for how Martha prefers to live in the past with her memories, and Carl looks more to the future. It could even be a reflection of the actress who plays Martha, Dodie Clark, as she has stated that she lives in the past quite a lot, and reflects on memories.
There were a few other ideas that I've had that I considered were way too impossible, so didn't include. I hope you've enjoyed this, and if you're one of the people from the comments section on the film, thank you for being so patient with me! I've been putting off doing this for such a long time, as I was scared I wasn't going to make sense. Hopefully you agree with some of my points, and if not then please do let me know your interpretation

I love your explanation, it both sums up my thoughts but also points out loads of other things i hadnt picked up on.
It's probably way too late now and you wont answer this, but what does the dog symbolise in the ending - is it that the dog is alive and therefore dodie/martha is dead, since the dog was going to be a sacrifice made by sav/Death in order to save dodie? Or maybe the dog is symbolic of dodie, and while the dog is alive she is too? Or something else entirely. I know the dog is linked to dodie, and also the line about Ringo dying first, but im not 100% sure what it means.

    • @dozylamb
      @dozylamb 7 лет назад +29

i dont necessarily believe this theory (martha is already dead) but the idea that death confronting carl about martha dying is it sinking in to him that she is dead was very interesting to read. its a nice analysis.
i think youre right about the metaphor about the beatles but perhaps it goes deeper. i perceived it as a metaphor for their relationship. martha prefers the beginning of their relationship; it being youthful, less complicated, happier. and carl liking the later aspects of the relationship. this also backs up the idea of why martha fell out of love with carl; why they broke up.
      this was lovely to read(:

    • @ryanterry2806
      @ryanterry2806 6 лет назад +2

This is an amazing analysis/theory, but isn’t the very end of the film supposed to be Martha’s death? I interpreted Martha seeing Ringo outside as her going into the afterlife as we can assume Ringo had already died.

I actually really liked the almost cliffhanger ending, it leaves you thinking about it again and again. without a defined ending you're forced to think about what the ending could have been like, why it ended that way, what almost insignificant moments could have foreshadowed a 'true' ending, or what happens after the credits roll
Honestly, this film was amazing to me, hit's you right in the feels, but not in a, mind crushing sorrow way, in a dull heart ache way.. and I like that.
I also like how the characters develop, even in such a short time, you go from knowing nothing about either of the characters, to knowing so much.
I feel like the film was a bit unexplained, in a 'wait, whats happening? where are they?' way, but at the same time, it's like real life, if you followed to strangers lives in 5 minuet intervals over 2 days you really wouldn't know what's going on, theres nobody telling you where they're going or what they're thinking
the whole film has a very 'real' and raw feeling to it
    anyway I'm done rambling lmao

I think the biggest symbolism in this is that in the beginning they don't believe her and try to stay away but in the end, they talk about death like it's no big deal. It's really symbolic of how you come to terms with death.

Resigned, both of them stand there with wide, trusting eyes. And everything is just a little blurry, and they can taste salt. And Death chooses life, and aims their silent gun.

This short film made me cry. It's really made me think about things, about how death is both thankless and somewhat good at the same time. As she said, death is a "necessary evil". Without it, there would be no fun in the world at all. Fun is really taking a risk, in a way, trying to do as much as you can before you eventually "kick the bucket", so to speak. I don't know, I guess that what I'm trying to say is that there always needs to be a villain for there to be a hero. To be good, someone else has to be bad, or good wouldn't exist at all. Well, anyway, this short film is absolutely amazing and it will stick with me, and hopefully everyone else who is lucky enough to watch it.

+Sky Firestone I really liked the idea of her being super naive. Like, she's been around and subjected to humanity for such a long time but has never really stopped to see what the big fuss is about. She has no understanding of etiquette or anything pertaining to human behaviour and/or day to day activities. Just a very vague picture, based on her extensive years killing people.

I agree. death, when personified, is typically portrayed to be all knowing and content, sort of at peace because nothing is a surprise, but the take on death here is that death is literally all she knows, which makes a lot of sense despite not being the most popular perception of death as a character. it's refreshing, I think, and it's also cool how she's so self aware, to the point of being able to question her identity and purpose, while omniscient characters are usually completely calm and collected

Sniper HD325 no one deserves to die. Especially not two boys who have changed over 2 million people's lives.

Sniper HD325 they make people happy. They have stopped people from being sad. They have saved people's lives. If you don't believe me, that's fine. But I speak from experience because I used to be suicidal, but they helped me.

Sorry if this question is obvious, but at the end Death is hinting at the third Beatle's impending death, and Bertie is wondering if it is Ringo. Then Ringo the dog appears. Is that hinting that Death decided to spare Martha (Dodie) in exchange for the dog's life, like she was originally going to do in the beginning?

i like to think so, but at the same time, i think the films just wants to let it be, no matter who dies, it just happens?

I personally think it's probably just a little clever way to allude to the fact that it might be Ringo who she goes after next without explicitly saying so. I like to think that the Death in the film can do small, magical things like let Ringo out. (They were wondering who did, I assume it was Death who used her powers.) Also I personally thought that the dog appearing also doubled as a warning that the dog was still alive, and that Dodie still had to die.
