Metallica have always split their fans. Every album has a different feel and sound and that’s always made me come back to Metallica. 72 seasons is a solid album in my opinion, the best since load

Invisible kiiiiid never see what he diiiiid got stuck where it hiiiiit follow through. the. griiiid. or HOW SWEET ARE YOUUUUUUUH?!! HOW SWEET DOES IT GETTTT'AH? 10/10
As along time metallica fan I'm really enjoying the new one better than hardwired tbh. Way more consistent front to back and more of a melodic atmosphere with some strong nwobhm vibes to give it more of a identity
Better production, but I honestly hoped for just 1-2 good songs I’d keep listening to (Hardwired gave me 3-4 out of 16 including bonus tracks). Besides Darkness being catchy, I don’t see myself returning to any of 72’s songs 😐
After so many years Load still being underrated😅. Certainly deserves a better position, retrospectively got better general appreciation and is commonly accepted by many voices as an underrated album. Once you accept the sharp musical style changes, there is great songwriting, instrumental arrangements, further introspective lyrics and overall creative evolution in this work. If only have they mixed and edited both Load/Reload in an unique album with the best 14 songs of this era, you got a masterpiece and one of their best.
I've had many years to accept the musical change. In fact as a kid born in the 80's, Load WAS the era of Metallica I grew up with. There are some great tracks, but that doesn't make it underrated imo. Like we both said, put the good tracks of both albums together and it could be one of the best rock albums of the 90's.
@@MetalTrenches Load is one of the most controversial album ever in the genre, and received disproportionated hate for the band drastic changes in style and musical direction, and even appearance and looks. All this stuff for many years inevitably triggered negative reactions towards a very good album in his way, but anyway almost anything would pale against the legacy of his excellent preceding albums (the era of Metallica from Kill,em all in 1983 until their peak in the early nineties with the massive success of the Black Album is almost unparalleled in the genre) But Load have aged much better than many of the 90's music, and retrospective reviews by the media and fans generally agree to consider it to be severely underrated and overall a pretty good work in the end. I personally put "Until it Sleeps, "Bleeding me" or "The Outlaw Torn" in the top tier Metallica songs, just one step behind their great mastepieces like Master, Fade to Black or Bells. Adding behind pretty good tracks like Hero of the Day, Wasting my hate or King Nothing, and forget about 2-3 filler expendable song, (i would say even the country vibes of Mama said brings some variety and range to the album to the very least, welcomed or not). Lastly added to this great production values and notable improvements with introspective lyrics and complex themes, and the sum of all of it makes Load clearly worthy of the B grade and also clearly better than the reasonably satysfying Harwired or Magnetic. I go further here and impolularly put Load even better than Kill,em all, great debuting album in his way but a bit monotonous and rusty with boring generic lyrics and archetypical genre themes about destruction and death.
I like the idea of pulling the best of load and reload into one 45 minute album. That said it would still get a C grade in my book as i would grade them independently at a D. Just my opinion. I was thrashing in the 80's and discovered death metal in the 90's, so load and reload went in the opposite direction of my taste.
Nice list. One thing we differ on is that I like longer albums. Anything under 40 mins seems like I got ripped off. But to each their own and thank you for your work.
@@Metalton95 I have found both of those albums to be just flat out dull with no real highlights to speak of, I think I would struggle to scrape together an EP from those two.
@@evilone1079 shieet, fair play to you then :D Death Magnetic had just come out when I became a (metal) fan, so I still dig End Of The Line, All Nightmare Long, and Broken Beat & Scarred - and Spit Out The Bone, Halo On Fire, and Dream No More were good from Hardwired imo.
Dude this a solid list, probably the best I've seen. Only change I'd make is putting Justice in S tier. I think it's the peak of their skill level, the album grooves so well. And Blackened intro is unbeatable
S: Lightning, AJFA, Puppets. A: Kill em all, Black Album, Death Magnetic. B: Hardwired. C: Load, Reload, 72 seasons. F: St Anger. I would also put S&M in the S category as well. So well done and very unique.
I’m mostly on board with your takes here, but it hurt my heart to hear Bleeding Me so dismissed. It’s long yes, but man if that song hits you at the right moment in your life, it becomes a part of you.
I've always said that Metallica doesn't have enough people reviewing their albums. They're such a legacy band that they could release an album that's nothing but a dog farting for 54 minutes, and half the people who listen to metal would salivate at the prospect of more Metallica while the other half would be like "Well, this isn't their best work but remember when they wrote "Ride the Lightning"?"
This isn't true at all, Metallica have got alot of people that hate them, actually there kind of a band people see as cool to hate, since load reload and St anger. But yeah they could make any album and it would sell a massive amount
Metallica have constantly grown. They are one of the few bands that actually havent tried to copy their old breakthrough albums. Which is a horrible idea. As a band you have to evolve and move away from your old self. Thats exactly what they have been doing with all the recent albums
metal enthusiast really don't like metallica for a variety of reasons, this comment has no basis, every album after and justice for all was a punching bag
@@metalpuppet5798 as much as most of Chris's diet of metal sounds like two cars crashing into each other at 150mph, I didn't figure he would go the commercial route and review Metallica just for the clicks. But here we are.
This is a really good ranking. My personal favorite is And Justice because of the fantastic riffs from that album but I see why it doesn’t quite make S because it is not as complete as RTL and MOP. Good video 👍
Justice will always have a special place in my heart. It was the album that got me into Metallica and I was lucky to see them on that tour. If it had bass it would be my No1.
We’ve all been waiting for this one! Spot on, swap Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets, and you have my ranking exactly. I also love the Behemoth shirt!
One thing I'll give to 72 Seasons (the songs I've heard lol, didn't hear all of it) is the little guitar hooks. I actually think it's biggest weakness is how long these tracks are. Just bring back 3-4 minute long thrash songs. I actually think that's my biggest issue with most classic bands.
What I don't care for is 72 Seasons is the same tone as Death Magnetic and Hardwired. One thing that really set their first 6 albums apart was you got a different tone with each album. Each album had a very distinct sound. These last 3 albums just sound the same. Take someone who has never heard Metallica, and you can mix any of the songs from the last 3 albums and they can't tell what album they are from. It's a bit dissapointing and makes the songs less memorable.
That's a bullseye statement for me, the guitar tones especially are too samey! Songs are blurring together, with copycat production. They do need someone to throw a wrench into their far too isolated recording process, they need a shake up! That said, I do find much to like on these last three albums, just lacking in diversity and sonic variety.
Thank you for making this video. By the way, it’s refreshing to see someone talk about their albums with open mindedness and not following whatever trend the Metallica heaters or following at the time. I’m so tired of hearing people cry about how they don’t listen to any of the albums past the 80s or complaining about that. Lars has always been a bad drummer but they never complained about that until they heard that interview with Scott from Anthrax because before the only thing they ever complained about was the first three or four albums were perfect, and didn’t have anything wrong with them and they’ve suck since then. Well, if they’ve always thought he was a bad drummer one and they bring that up when they’re talking about how great those 80s albums were? Some fans in the middle community just bitch for the sake of bitching I’m convinced. But yeah, there are some good songs off the loaded and reload album I think. No I wouldn’t consider them thrash metal but I keep an open mind and listen to a lot of different genres of music. I love metal but just because an album is pure metal doesn’t mean it’s good either. There are hundreds of metal albums out there that just sound like a guitar store falling down a flight of stairs.
I hear you, man. To me, Metallica pre 91 is untouchable. But, they haven't put out a great album since, although they have put out great songs. If you made a 9 song album with Load and Reload, you'd have banger of an album. I personally like St. Anger. It lacks focus and solos, but that was a good direction. I think with the last couple, again take 4 or 5 songs off each, and you have a fantastic album. Metallica still writes great songs, just a lot of filler in between. But, I get the idea that people stop listening and then complain. I'm also a huge Megadeth fan, and it's all I hear. People talk endlessly about the RIP lineup, but don't remember while that lineup made RIP, they also made the more commercial albums, as well. And they've put out a few banger albums since 2004, even the last two, but people wouldn't know because they stopped listening after 94. So, it gets annoying. I'm glad Megadeth and Metallica are still around and doing what they want. They can't please everyone and they can't keep making their masterpiece albums over and over again. Are these bands putting out their best work now? Of course not. But, who cares. They deserve the respect for having made albums that defined a genre, and had a huge impact on the metal world.
@@isaiahchristoffersen8579 Sure, Dyers Eve stands as arguably Lars' one and only "extreme" metal performance (maybe Fight Fire With Fire as well). But his REAL quality on the drums is how catchy and "singable" his fills are. Sure, he doesn't do crazy shit or usually use much double bass. But tell me ANY thrash fan who cannot sing every single fill on Disposable Heroes' 1.5 minute long intro, Justice's title track, Creeping Death or, well, Dyers Eve.
I saw Metallica on the hardwired tour and they were awesome hearing one and for whome the bell tolls live is life changing One of my favorite bands of all time
Im glad im not the only one that thinks if they shed down the run time and cut the fat out, they'd make a pretty good album. I didn't think of it till after I heard Death Magnetic almost a month back, think it was anyway, if not was close. Anyway nice list, after going through those thrash albums cause of your tier lists, really am loving ride the lightning, master of puppets is also good, but I wish it had the production of ride the lightning cause that production was cool af (sorry for my language). I used to say was burnt out on them, but I think its more that I've moved on from Metallica and prefer other bands now, especially after talking in discord. Hope to see more lists and videos to expand my tastes and knowledge on metal and music in general too.
Goated video as your tier lists always are, but for one of the goat bands as well. Thanks for the quality as always, also fully agree with every single ranking funny enough 😂
Honestly Metallica hasn't released an above average album in three decades. I'm still waiting for a late career masterpiece but I don't think it's gonna happen. Also why do they always feel the need to make an album 70+ minutes long?
1) Kill 'em All 2) Ride the Lightning 3) ...and Justice for All 4) Master of Puppets 6 - Tie) 72 Seasons 6 - Tie) Hardwired... to Self-Destruct! 7) Death Magnetic 8) Metallica / Black album 9) Load 10) Reload 11) St. Anger
Only disagreements I have is I would've put AJFA at S tier, and I think putting the Black Album at B is too low. I may be sick of hearing that album at this point, but to me that album is at least an A.
I agree 100% with your tier list. I don't seem to get why people think 72 seasons is better than hardwired. I guess they like the load/reload style of music.
Half of hardwired is phenomenal, the rest is horrible. But 72 has intriguing moments throughout. Like all the singles, and the other ones are probably better. The last 3 songs are s tier album worthy
St.anger just induces anxiety for me. The mp3 comparison was spot on. The random lyric placement and confusing riffs totally represented the bands relationship im sure. Great video dude.
I know this is an exceptionally hot take, but I enjoy post St. Anger Metallica more than black album. Death Magnetic, Hardwired, and 72 Seasons all feel like they have better metal riff writing and I find the weird structures to be charming. Interestingly, I think some of the reasons I actually prefer them over the black album are precisely why other people don't. Even you hit on this. Black album gets praised for being a super refined and accessible yet still heavy metal album. For me it's super polished to the point that it loses some character. I like some of the tracks, but I like them less than other people seem to. On the other hand I actually find some of the longer passages on later albums (the ones people would call needlessly long, perhaps) to be almost hypnotic in their repetition. Most critics want the fat trimmed off it seems, but for me that fat is where a lot of the flavor is. I do acknowledge I'm in the minority on this though.
To me, 72 seasons is one of their best albums. It’s on a another, different, level to their classic albums. It speaks to me on so many levels. It’s a breath of fresh air, and it’s uniquely Metallica. 💪
I know not an album but the '87 EP is so fucking good. RTL & MOP are my top picks and METALLICA at their best (best at the time too, very ahead of everything really) with AJFA closely after but yeah length is an issue but gotta appreciate the technicality/complexity of it all. Black album is okay but that was the beginning of the end for their development and relevancy and me giving a fuck about their existence. They are still one of my favorite Thrash bands but strictly in the 80's. But I love their chemistry to this day, noting funnier than James giving Lars timing tips and Kirk coming out with classics like: "it's the notes in between" 😂
Here would be my ranking of all of Metallica’s albums, including 72 Seasons: S - Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets A - Kill ‘Em All, …And Justice for All B - Black Album C - Death Magnetic, Hardwired… to Self Destruct, 72 Seasons D - Load, Reload F - St. Anger
I LOVED about 6 songs off Hardwired n didn’t really like 6. This album is just “meh” to me. I don’t dislike it but there really isn’t a song I LOVE. Ill give it a few more listens. I’ll still be a Metallica fan for life though 🤘😝🤘
I actually agree with just about everything that you said here, including the tier rankings, which I would honestly say is probably identical to how I would rank their albums. I also agree they have been seriously shooting themselves in the foot comparing the new albums to Kill Em All. Comparing them to the more mid-tempo Black Album I think is a more favorable comparison. And again, I 100% agree on METALLICA. CUT. YOUR. ALBUMS. DOWN. TO. 40-50. MINUTES. PLEASE. JESUS. FUCKING. CHRIST.
S: Master Of Puppets, The Black Album (This album got me into metal, and reason why I LOVE the genre) A: Kill Them All, Ride The Lightning B: And Justice For All (sorry the lack of bass does it for me), Death Magnetic, Hardwired, C: Load/Reload (man if they took the best songs from both albums they could of called it "Lock & Load"), 72 Seasons. F: St. Anger (Sucks balls, but this album needed to happen)
Great list. The only thing I would personally change is putting Justice higher than Muppets mainly because I'm remastered the whole album myself with enhanced bass and brums and it sounds amazing when you can actually feel what it's trying to convey, but again it's something I've done in retrospect so perhaps I wouldn't changed the list on that alone.
I just wanna say that MoP was my first Metallica full album, heard it as a 11 year old, I am 34 now.listened it countless times. How the fuck I didnt noticed soldiers helmet hanging on the cross is blowing my mind right now. goddamn
Did you own it on cassette or cd? I owned it on a tape and also missed it for years due to the fact that it was so tiny lol. I think I also missed the hands for the longest time too😂
@@perpetualmotion357 I got yellow cassete tape but without cover and I thought that Damage inc. was fucked up due to damaged tape if you know what I mean. then I found bulgarian pirate CD on market place and bought it and realized that I wanna hear more stuff like Damage inc. and my cousin gave me Slayer. changed my life. I also had T shirt of MoP and didnt noticed helmet till few days ago. some kind of mandella effect.
Btw, I kind of like Lux Aeterna, maybe the only one I liked from the new album. Somebody mixed Hit the Lights vocals on that and uploaded as 'Hit the Lux'. It is much better than the original, would recommend :)
This album DEFINITELY gets better with more listens!! It’s a really great album. A solid offering with a few killer moments. I gave it a C+ but now raise that to a B+ 🤘😝🤘
Oh yeah, the album with Don't Tread On Me (trash). And dragging mid-tempo songs in The God That Failed, Sad But True (the main riff & verses), My Friend of Misery (the chorus..). And their most anticlimatic chorus on a ballad in Nothing Else Matters. And 3 short thrashers that would've been forgotten on any of the prior albums (Struggle Within, Through the Never, Holier Than Thou). I'd remove half the songs and change something on most of the others (Struggle is SO close to being very good, but ends up short, for instance).
I agree with Metaliica's albums being too long. Disappointed to hear the new album has long songs and runtime but I haven't heard it yet so dunno. I think St. Anger has some salvageable ideas.... but the execution definitely left much to be desired.
I can't speak for the post-Black Album records as I don't listen to nor own any of them.. but if you swap Ride for Justice I completely agree about your opinions & rankings of the initial 5 albums.
Man are we on the same page👍 other than 72 seasons, the album felt like a grandpa Harley album. At least in hardwire they caught me with spit out the bone.
Unpopular opinion. For me personally, St. Anger gives me Nu Metal era nostalgia vibes. I love the rawness of the album and the catchy tracks. Also, the grunge influence of the 90s albums works well with Metallica. Each era provides something different. 72 Seasons has lots of great new tracks. I'll admit that I'm not big on thrash metal, I'm more into melodeath, rap metal, and atmospheric stuff. But I do love their 80s classics. My Metallica Ranking from worst to best: 13. Lulu 12. ...And Justice for All 11. Garage Inc. 10. Kill 'Em All 9. Hardwired... to Self-Destruct 8. Death Magnetic 7. 72 Seasons 6. Load 5. Reload 4. St. Anger 3. Master of Puppets 2. Ride the Lightning 1. The Black Album
I agree very much with your ranking. My personal ranking is: 1. …And Justice For All 2. Ride The Lightning 3. Master Of Puppets 4. Kill ‘Em All 5. Black Album 6. Death Magnetic 7. Hardwired… 8. Load 9. 72 Seasons 10. ReLoad 11. St. Anger
All I got to say is you have to be on absolute crack rocks if you think 72 Seasons is anywhere close to being better than Load or Reload. I mean just compare the singles alone. Load: "Until It Sleeps" "King Nothing" "Hero of the Day" "Mama Said" Reload: "The Memory Remains" "The Unforgiven II" "Fuel" "Better Than You" 72 Seasons: "Lux Æterna" "Screaming Suicide" "If Darkness Had a Son" "72 Seasons" Let's be real honest, 72 Seasons isn't in competition with Load or Reload, it's in competition with St. Anger and LuLu.
Stfu. 72 Seasons isnt in competition with anything. Stop comparing shit. A band evolves. It has clear nods to the old classics like Kill em All, Master and Justice while they are still evolving as a band and trying new things. They are never going to try and copy any old record because it doesnt make sense. They could easily do it in the phenomenal shape they are in now playing wise. But as I said it doesnt make any sense to copy yourself or others. You need to write what you want to write. And in this case they got influences from all kinds of eras in their career without actually copying themselves. The album is great
Yes I agree with you. Well said. Although I would not even rate load, reload or st anger. New album might grow on me a little like hardwired did, but it sounds generic or robotic to me.
I listened to 72 Seasons only once so far, and while it's too early for me to tell if I like it or not, I will admit to these couple observations: - James' voice sounds REALLY good on some songs, specifically on Chasing Light, and really old on others. - These songs are arguably at their best when they tap into that Load/ReLoad-era hard rock groove. That's where I feel they (and more specifically Lars) are at their best nowadays. I am going copy-and-paste this comment onto The Metal Meltdown's, Metal Trenches' and Thralls of Metal's reviews for consistency's sake.
1. AJFA 2. Black 3.Ride The Lightning 4.Load 5. Kill 'em All 6. Death Magnetic 7. Hardwired to Self Desturct 8. St. Anger 9. ReLoad 10. Master Of Puppets. I didn't put 72 Seasons on the list yet because I haven't decided to listen to the whole thing yet.
Comparing this to Hardwired I would say that the best songs from that album are better than best songs from this album, but after that all the rest is so much better in 72 seasons. In hardwired almost all of the B-side was some of Metallica's worst songs. In this album I can't say that any song is a stinker. Very solid and cohesive album. Clearly better than Hardwired. I have now idea how I will feel about each song year from now. From Hardwired my opinion stayed the same from the get go.
I think their first 6 albums are masterpieces. The rest are good, solid albums. Justice is one of the heaviest and most vicious albums ever recorded in E Standard, along with Slowly We Rot by Obituary! St. Anger grew on me. I haven't heard 72 Seasons.
Metallica was my shit as a kid. From 88 (8 years old) until 92. Then I was grabbed by grunge and some rap (Dre, Cube, Snoop, NWA) and Nine Inch Nails exploded in 94 (still my fav band) which also got me into industrial music. Then Metallica released Load in 96. I was still interested and bought the album, played it a bunch too (like I had to 🤔) but that was the fall off for me. It wasn't close to the same league as the first 4 albums or the black album (as a more mainstream metal album).. and I never bought another one of their albums since. I heard the singles, but it just wasn't for me. Which seems like the case once again for 72 Seasons. Sweet ranking dude 🤘
what you said about there needing to be someone to cut down their run time, I COMPLETELY AGREE! i think hardwired could have been a SOLID album if some of the songs were shorter and some of the songs were cut off/merged.
Tend to agree with everything you said... atm I'd rank 72 Seasons higher but that's probably because it's only a week old and I'm still a bit excited because it's new
Pretty solid tier list. In my opinion the album had a lot of experimentation showing us new ideas and influences. Some of their highlighted songs other than the 4 singles, you must burn, too far gone, crowned of barbed crown and inamorata although a little long, they were pretty solid tracks. At the moment, I dont think 72 seasons is better than Hardwired, but I think it has the potential to be..
This is actually a pretty good ranking. Maybe flipflop "Load" & "Death Magnetic" but that would be minor. "Death Magnetic" is a more consistent album top to bottom but the good songs on "Load" make it shine more for me. Years ago the Black Album would've been an easy S but it has since moved down a notch so no complaints there.
Metallica used to be my favourite band as a teen. I find it hard to get excited by them these days but the first couple of singles from the new ablum sounded good so I'll check it out at least once.
Do not do it. You won't find anything good on it. I haven't gotten along with Metallica since Load. I'd rather keep the memories of 4 really good albums than screw them up with all the dirt that came afterwards.
1. Ride the lightning 2. Master of puppets 3. And justice for all 4. Kill 'em all 5. Black album 6. Load 7. Reload 8. Death magnetic 9. 72 seasons 10. Hardwired to self destruct 11. Lulu 12. St. Anger
I'm putting the black album first..master of puppets 2nd justice third..ride 4th..and ATM I can decide if st anger or 72 seasons deserves last but I think I might like st anger more but not by much
Agree with this list 100%.. only at Justice for all in this video so far but the only 4 albums that matter are already put exactly where they should be. Everything else is ass cheeks
My Ranking: 11: St. Anger 10: Hardwired… To Self Destruct 9: 72 Seasons 8: ReLoad (Where The Wild Things are is one of my favorite Metallica songs) 7: Kill Em All (overrated, but still really dig it. Whiplash is one of my favorite Metallica songs.) 6: Load 5: Death Magnetic 4: The Black Album 3: Ride The Lightning 2: …And Justice For All 1: Master of Puppets

Bleeding Me is their greatest song IMO. And Inamorata has the potential to be top 3 for me.
I like the idea of pulling the best of load and reload into one 45 minute album. That said it would still get a C grade in my book as i would grade them independently at a D. Just my opinion. I was thrashing in the 80's and discovered death metal in the 90's, so load and reload went in the opposite direction of my taste.
Yeah, Bleeding Me and The Outlaw Torn are probably my favorite Metallica songs
The biggest highlight of the new album for me was Hetfields vocals. Damn he’s still got it and he put in a huge performance vocally here
Fr I was impressed about his vocals
His vocals actually improved.
Nice list. One thing we differ on is that I like longer albums. Anything under 40 mins seems like I got ripped off. But to each their own and thank you for your work.
I love a long album that WARRANTS the length: Opeth, Warforged, BTBAM, etc. These ones just do NOT imo
@@MetalTrenchesIf they had put the decent tracks off Load and Reload together the could have had a pretty decent 45 minute album.
@@evilone1079 same with Hardwired / Death Magnetic, although they were almost a decade apart ofc
@@Metalton95 I have found both of those albums to be just flat out dull with no real highlights to speak of, I think I would struggle to scrape together an EP from those two.
@@evilone1079 shieet, fair play to you then :D
Death Magnetic had just come out when I became a (metal) fan, so I still dig End Of The Line, All Nightmare Long, and Broken Beat & Scarred - and Spit Out The Bone, Halo On Fire, and Dream No More were good from Hardwired imo.
Dude this a solid list, probably the best I've seen. Only change I'd make is putting Justice in S tier. I think it's the peak of their skill level, the album grooves so well. And Blackened intro is unbeatable
Blackened is my #1 fav song ever
S: Lightning, AJFA, Puppets. A: Kill em all, Black Album, Death Magnetic. B: Hardwired. C: Load, Reload, 72 seasons. F: St Anger. I would also put S&M in the S category as well. So well done and very unique.
I’m mostly on board with your takes here, but it hurt my heart to hear Bleeding Me so dismissed. It’s long yes, but man if that song hits you at the right moment in your life, it becomes a part of you.
Yeah it's an absolute classic, one of the few songs that is improved by S and M.
Bleeding me imo is the best song on Load
It's a killer. One of their best
As a massive fan of Metallica since ‘89 I agree with your list. I’d probably put Justice up the top too though…
Naw, Kill Em All is by far their best.
And justice should have its own tier
@@user-bm3ts2ql6s master and ride are better
I agree with you, ajfa is such a beautiful work, prime Metallica but one thing that is crucial, the bass is missing
Stuff like Bad Seed, Outlaw Torn, etc, are all top Metallica songs for me. Also, I lowkey like St. Anger.
I lowkey like St. Anger aswell
SSSSSAAAAAYYYYNNNTTT AAAAAYYYYYYYNNNNNGGGGGUUUUUHHHH!
And now that happened exactly. As a musician, the new stuff is under all my expectations.
Alright, here's my actual list.
S: MOP/RTL/AJFA (the "/" means the albums break even)
A: TBA, KEA
B: DM, 72S/HTSD
C: Load
D: ReLoad
F: St. Anger
@@AllOuttaBubblegum123 Same for me but i have it as no1 even without the bass.
I have found you my lord
What about bass ?
1- Justice
2- Lightening
3- Puppets
4- Black
5- Kill ‘em
6- Hardwired
7- Death
8- 72
9- Anger
10- Load
11- Reload
We’ve all been waiting for this one! Spot on, swap Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets, and you have my ranking exactly. I also love the Behemoth shirt!
Outlaw torn is a phenomenal song. Massively underrated.
The S and M version adds so much body to an already great song. That performance is a masterpiece to me.
I always forget about knowing it, until I hear the song and I'm like: Oh yeah, I do like this
As whole Load album.
Load and reload should have been one album with the bullshit cut off
One thing I'll give to 72 Seasons (the songs I've heard lol, didn't hear all of it) is the little guitar hooks. I actually think it's biggest weakness is how long these tracks are. Just bring back 3-4 minute long thrash songs. I actually think that's my biggest issue with most classic bands.
Unless it's Exodus...those guys still know how to pull out a 5+ min track which still sounds as good, if not better.
Master of puppets/And justice for all will always be my favorites but I loved "All nightmare Long"!
Check out the AI version with James 1989 style vocals...I didn't think it was possible for the song to be any more epic, but it is 🤘
I agree with this list 100 percent. Maybe if the solos in Hardwire didn't sound like dogwater it be an A- or B+ for me.
@@treff9226 Exactly!
Spot on.
Rating RTL > MoP is based
Finally someone who KNOWS how to rank metallica albums. I actually didn't get mad for once lol
Dude, he forgot Lulu!
The list isn't complete!
I try to find the good in everything, but I’m also honest and try to bring humor into that instead of just hate.
People think Lars is a bad drummer until they try learning Dyers Eve on drums
@@isaiahchristoffersen8579 Sure, Dyers Eve stands as arguably Lars' one and only "extreme" metal performance (maybe Fight Fire With Fire as well).
But his REAL quality on the drums is how catchy and "singable" his fills are. Sure, he doesn't do crazy shit or usually use much double bass. But tell me ANY thrash fan who cannot sing every single fill on Disposable Heroes' 1.5 minute long intro, Justice's title track, Creeping Death or, well, Dyers Eve.
I would exactly rank them the same, including rating 72 seasons C+. Great job and thank you for your honest opinions.
I saw Metallica on the hardwired tour and they were awesome hearing one and for whome the bell tolls live is life changing
One of my favorite bands of all time
And Justice For |All is better than the first 3 albums for me
Longer ranking than I thought since there are only 4 Metallica albums.
😂
I like the "lifestyle determines my deathstyle" is a profound lyric 😀
Fun tier listen, thanks dude!
Edit: Lol @ Ulrich Senior "Delete that"
I forgot about that echo chamber bit from the movie. Hilarious and telling!
1) Kill 'em All
2) Ride the Lightning
3) ...and Justice for All
4) Master of Puppets
6 - Tie) 72 Seasons
6 - Tie) Hardwired... to Self-Destruct!
7) Death Magnetic
8) Metallica / Black album
9) Load
10) Reload
11) St. Anger
Only disagreements I have is I would've put AJFA at S tier, and I think putting the Black Album at B is too low. I may be sick of hearing that album at this point, but to me that album is at least an A.
Metallica was replaced by space aliens when they made the black album... and they were never heard from again.
I agree 100% with your tier list. I don't seem to get why people think 72 seasons is better than hardwired. I guess they like the load/reload style of music.
I honestly think Hardwired is better too, 72 seasons is a 3/5 for me. Love some of the songs though
Half of hardwired is phenomenal, the rest is horrible. But 72 has intriguing moments throughout. Like all the singles, and the other ones are probably better. The last 3 songs are s tier album worthy
To me anything after Justice is a guilty pleasure
After self titled for me
Load wasn’t that bad, reload and St anger are the only albums by them I don’t care for but other than that all the rest of their albums are perfect
Not too huge of a fan of the Black Album myself, and I'd personally put AJFA as my favourite, but I do agree with the 72S ranking here.
I think it's definitely their best work since the black album. This album will age well, i'm sure of it
Excellent! Thanks a lot for such a great and spot on ranking!!!!
Holy shit, this is the first tier list I've ever seen online that I 100% agree with. Mind-blowing
St.anger just induces anxiety for me. The mp3 comparison was spot on. The random lyric placement and confusing riffs totally represented the bands relationship im sure. Great video dude.
If someone would turn this album into a S&M2 style album, the songs would be much better. Like what they did with AWMH, it's so much better on S&M2
good, its supposed to do that
Death Magnetic is an A for me, everything else is perfect though!
I do acknowledge I'm in the minority on this though.
i’ll defend st anger to the grave, i can relate to that album too much
To me, 72 seasons is one of their best albums. It’s on a another, different, level to their classic albums. It speaks to me on so many levels. It’s a breath of fresh air, and it’s uniquely Metallica. 💪
I agree 72 seasons is such a good album
For the first time I TOTALLY agree with you! Thank you for your great reviews.
Thanks for watching and engaging
I know not an album but the '87 EP is so fucking good. RTL & MOP are my top picks and METALLICA at their best (best at the time too, very ahead of everything really) with AJFA closely after but yeah length is an issue but gotta appreciate the technicality/complexity of it all. Black album is okay but that was the beginning of the end for their development and relevancy and me giving a fuck about their existence. They are still one of my favorite Thrash bands but strictly in the 80's. But I love their chemistry to this day, noting funnier than James giving Lars timing tips and Kirk coming out with classics like: "it's the notes in between" 😂
Here would be my ranking of all of Metallica’s albums, including 72 Seasons:
S - Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets
A - Kill ‘Em All, …And Justice for All
B - Black Album
C - Death Magnetic, Hardwired… to Self Destruct, 72 Seasons
D - Load, Reload
F - St. Anger

I LOVED about 6 songs off Hardwired n didn’t really like 6. This album is just “meh” to me. I don’t dislike it but there really isn’t a song I LOVE. Ill give it a few more listens. I’ll still be a Metallica fan for life though 🤘😝🤘
Man I just listened to the whole album and I'm really disappointed. Nothing slaps, this is fucking thrash and nothing slaps.
CUT. YOUR. ALBUMS. DOWN. TO. 40-50. MINUTES. PLEASE. JESUS. FUCKING. CHRIST.
🤘🏻
S: Master Of Puppets, The Black Album (This album got me into metal, and reason why I LOVE the genre)
A: Kill Them All, Ride The Lightning
B: And Justice For All (sorry the lack of bass does it for me), Death Magnetic, Hardwired,
C: Load/Reload (man if they took the best songs from both albums they could of called it "Lock & Load"), 72 Seasons.
F: St. Anger (Sucks balls, but this album needed to happen)
in my opinion Master of Puppets is a little bit better than Ride the Lightning, is faster and more aggressive

Sorry but the Black Album is S and the first 4 albums are S+
Black Album mid asf
lol you maniac
Oh yeah, the album with Don't Tread On Me (trash).
And dragging mid-tempo songs in The God That Failed, Sad But True (the main riff & verses), My Friend of Misery (the chorus..).
And their most anticlimatic chorus on a ballad in Nothing Else Matters.
And 3 short thrashers that would've been forgotten on any of the prior albums (Struggle Within, Through the Never, Holier Than Thou).
I'd remove half the songs and change something on most of the others (Struggle is SO close to being very good, but ends up short, for instance).
Black album was the death of Metallica.
I agree with your list, well done! I am a bit indifferent on 72 Seasons, have to give it a few more spins.
Completely agree. I would maybe put Justice up there as well in S, but that's it.

3. Master Of Puppets
4. Kill ‘Em All
5. Black Album
6. Death Magnetic
7. Hardwired…
8. Load
9. 72 Seasons
10. ReLoad
11. St. Anger
All I got to say is you have to be on absolute crack rocks if you think 72 Seasons is anywhere close to being better than Load or Reload. I mean just compare the singles alone.
Load:
"Until It Sleeps"
"King Nothing"
"Hero of the Day"
"Mama Said"
Reload:
"The Memory Remains"
"The Unforgiven II"
"Fuel"
"Better Than You"
72 Seasons:
"Lux Æterna"
"Screaming Suicide"
"If Darkness Had a Son"
"72 Seasons"
Let's be real honest, 72 Seasons isn't in competition with Load or Reload, it's in competition with St.
Imo:
S- | Master | Lightning | Black
A - AJFA | Kill ‘em
B - Reload, death mag,
C+ Hardwire
C- load
The forbidden letter - St anger
Ya know, this is probably the only tier list I have fully agreed to
I listened to 72 Seasons only once so far, and while it's too early for me to tell if I like it or not, I will admit to these couple observations:
- James' voice sounds REALLY good on some songs, specifically on Chasing Light, and really old on others.
1. AJFA
2. Black
3.Ride The Lightning
4.Load
5. Kill 'em All
6. Death Magnetic
7. Hardwired to Self Desturct
8. St. Anger
9. ReLoad
10. Master Of Puppets.
I didn't put 72 Seasons on the list yet because I haven't decided to listen to the whole thing yet.
Master of Puppets last? That’s a very bold choice
Ain’t no way bro put master of puppets last
Comparing this to Hardwired I would say that the best songs from that album are better than best songs from this album, but after that all the rest is so much better in 72 seasons.
This is, in my opinion, the best Metallica album ranking ever!
I think their first 6 albums are masterpieces. The rest are good, solid albums. Justice is one of the heaviest and most vicious albums ever recorded in E Standard, along with Slowly We Rot by Obituary! St. Anger grew on me. I haven't heard 72 Seasons.
I have a hard time hearing Load referred to as a masterpiece, or putting it on the same level as MOP or RTL, but different strokes
@@MetalTrenches Understandable. But I dig it. I didn't always have that opinion. But through the years, it got better with each listen. Cheers! 🍻

It's to early to judge on this album I heard it and was okay by it then I heard it again and these songs really grow on you, and hit pretty good
St. Anger D tier...How dare you. Raw, emotional, Hetfield's most personal. An absolute masterpiece. Love the channel though, keep up the good work!

Love this band but hate that album.
Room of Mirrors is really good.
S - RTL MOP DM
A - KEA, HTSD, 72
B - Black, Justice, Load, St. Anger
C - Reload
D - Lulu (Pumping Blood rules though)
Metallica used to be my favourite band as a teen. I find it hard to get excited by them these days but the first couple of singles from the new ablum sounded good so I'll check it out at least once.
Do not do it. You won't find anything good on it. I haven't gotten along with Metallica since Load. I'd rather keep the memories of 4 really good albums than screw them up with all the dirt that came afterwards.
1. Ride the lightning
2. Master of puppets
3. And justice for all
4. Kill 'em all
5. Black album
6. Load
7. Reload
8. Death magnetic
9. 72 seasons
10. Hardwired to self destruct
11. Lulu
12. St. Anger
Definitelly one of the albums ever made
It definitely is one of them
I'm putting the black album first..master of puppets 2nd justice third..ride 4th..and ATM I can decide if st anger or 72 seasons deserves last but I think I might like st anger more but not by much
Agree with this list 100%.. only at Justice for all in this video so far but the only 4 albums that matter are already put exactly where they should be. Everything else is ass cheeks
My Ranking:
11: St. Anger
10: Hardwired… To Self Destruct
9: 72 Seasons
8: ReLoad (Where The Wild Things are is one of my favorite Metallica songs)
7: Kill Em All (overrated, but still really dig it. Whiplash is one of my favorite Metallica songs.)
6: Load
5: Death Magnetic
4: The Black Album
3: Ride The Lightning
2: …And Justice For All
1: Master of Puppets
