    I think I've been lucky because I've never experienced any smells what's so ever from my turtles and I'm a first time turtle mom. I have a Cumberland Slider and a Ouachita Map Red Eared Slider Hybrid, and I've never once had issues with smells. I do about 60% water changes every 4-5 days on their 150 gallon tub, plus I remove everything from the tank and give it a good scrub down, I also tend to do a quick scrub down on the inside of the tank while it's draining water. I clean their filter like once a month and I feed them in their tank and spot clean anything left over after a day. Thank you for the videos. I have learned a lot about how to be a good turtle mom from you and my boys seem healthy and happy for the last 2 years.

      I don't think you need to clean everything (especially the decorations, like wood or stones). Since those things can hold beneficial bacteria. Maybe just some shake in the old water will do. 😁

    I added another internal sterilizer to my big tank, I take my 2 goofballs out to feed them in another tub and they just stare at me like what did we do?? I kept at it for a week then let them win. Turtles are the messiest critters ever but when you call their name and they look around to find you or follow you from room to room in the house it makes it all so worth it! 💚💚🐢💚💚

    Definitely the food seems to be the worst when it comes to smell but sometimes finicky turtles get stressed and won't eat outside their enclosure but if you can do it's the way to go. Great video as always!!!! 👍

    • @RioCahyadiDrayka
      @RioCahyadiDrayka 3 года назад

      I can totally relate to that. In the past i had baby turtle that just won't eat outside the enclosure, no matter what. In the end i just give up and add some mosquito fish to eat the leftovers pelets 😅.

      The food smell ronchie way before the turtle ever gets to it! The tank has a whole different issue that surely needs addressing?

    Hope you feel better Dan❤️ I found the trick to in tank feeding my little Northern so I don’t stress her out... One Mazuri pellet at a time; that way there will be no rotting food and NO mess 😊

    Hope u feeling better. Hopefully this helps. I used a moss ball and a sunsun JUP-02 5 walt UV sterilizer sumersible filter pump, which these two things gets rid of odors in my 40 gallon tank everyday. I do clean my 5 uv watt once a day. I got the moss ball from petco. I order the 5 watt uv light pump from amazon. I do clean my moss ball daily. Very cute and precious baby turtles.

    Thanks for this video! I figured out why my tank smelled after cleaning the other day. The filter was cleaned and I didn’t know that at least some bacteria must be kept in there 🤦‍♂️ Helped out a lot!

    My daughter's tank smells too hi atmosphere, that's why I'm here, she does a very good job on the tank, she's an A student, so she earned the red ear, it's healthy. Kiwi started out no bigger than a .50 pcs, now it's bigger than yur hand. It in a 40 gal. tank she think she needs a 55 gal. I told her that's just more room for food to cling to. We will get a container to start feeding her in it. Thanks for all you do.

    I also want to add one little tips that might help, adding a *floating plant* in the brand new setup is a good idea too. 5 days ago, i make a outdoor enclosure for my baby Pink Belly side neck and False Map turtle. I just add a driftwood for a basking platform, one medium sized lava rock, no filter and no substrate.
    I also add 3 mosquito fish to help eating the leftovers pelet since i feed them in the enclosure. My daily maintenance is just scooping debris and poops with some fine net. And that's basically it, up to this day (0 water change) the water didn't even smell or cloudy. Those floater do some wonderful work and they did it so fast.

    • @DanTheTurtleMan_
      @DanTheTurtleMan_  3 года назад +1

      I totally agree. If you can do live plants of any kind, particularly floaters, they're nitrate sinks. They will keep that water CLEAN and CLEAR!

    • @RioCahyadiDrayka
      @RioCahyadiDrayka 3 года назад

      @@DanTheTurtleMan_ yup the only downside of having floaters is most of the time, our turtles will mess / torn their root 😅.

    I think having some compatible fish in the tank, like guppies, are a great way to keep the waste down because they will eat all the leftovers from the turtles food. So you won't have a leftover food situation like in your white feeding tub.

I clean my 60 pound tank every 10 days. What a nag but your video cleared a lot up of why its stinky even if its clean.

    Let me save you 8 minutes.
    Try feeding the turtle outside of their “home” enclosure. If they refuse to eat out if their enclosure:
    • Consider getting small minnows to eat the leftover turtle food. I personally use Rosies. (They keep the tank clean and double as enrichment/a snack for your turtle)
    • Buy anti turtle sludge water conditioner. It works wonders and keeps your turtle healthy. :3
    • Clean your take once a week. Do water changes frequently.
    • Get a better water filter. I personally change my filter once a month.

    I have 2 turtles that I keep in a 55 gallon tank, I change 80% of the water once a week. No problem with odor. They are about 11 inches long and I think they would have more water in a large kiddie pool, but my question for Dan: will I be able to keep the water warm enough? Will I have too much heat loss because of the big open surface? Also is it harder to keep clean?

    • @DanTheTurtleMan_
      @DanTheTurtleMan_  3 года назад

      Not if you have a strong enough heater, but ensure it doesn't touch the pool as it could melt the plastic!

I do feed her in her tank because that's what she is used to, my partner said pass her on 2 someone or a reptile owner, I just can't do that just coz of bad smell, I love her deeply❤❤WHAT SHALL I Do?

    It's not the tank but specifically my turtle smelling horrible. What could be the reason? It is kept in sunlight for 4/5 hours and it normally choose to stay out of water that time. Filter working well, changed water just yesterday? Is it sick? Ammonia accumulation due to too long exposure to sun light ?
