I had to learn on the fly. We moved into a house that the previous owners had abandoned 2 very tiny red eared's with no water or food for months. My daughters were 7 and 9 at the time, so of course dad had to rescue them. One of them made it and is now about 11 years old. Miss Shell has been a fantastic addition to the family, despite her care needs :)
Happy late thanksgiving and I made a big mistake. My turtle came in a tiny green container when I got her and then I got her a ten gallon tank. She was as small as a quarter. She wouldn't eat and mucus would come out of her nose. I researched and saw that she needed a lot of things. Don't worry she's great now. So I went to a pet store and got everything and now she has everything. It was so confusing and stressing, I cried and I thought she was going to die. But now she is enjoying life and has a 55 gallon tank with a heater, basking spot, uvb light and heat light, and filter. Awesome video and topic! The advice is awesome and can help many people and turtle lives. Very thoughtful of you to look out for turtles requirements.
Lucky Rooks Your turtle is lucky to have you, see what I did there. I found a baby gopher turtle in my back yard. After researching, found out they’re an endangered species here in Florida, so I called wildlife rescue because I just couldn’t keep it, and was told the best thing to do for that turtle was to release it back to the wild, so I did. 2 hours after that I went to the spot in the woods, and couldn’t find the little critter, so I’m happy that the baby turtle had moved on. I didn’t know that baby turtles are pretty much on their own when they break out of their egg shells. Once the momma lays those eggs, that’s where their parenting stops.
1:38 can you go back in time and make this video 2 and a half years ago?? Thanks for the helpful information. I’m an old man and I had an idea to get a turtle but after watching your video and another RUclipsr I’ve decided I’m not gonna get one. I’m too old and I don’t want to get a pet that will easily outlive me. Nor do I want to impose my pet responsibilities on someone else after I’m gone. So, thanks for being a great advocate for responsible turtle husbandry.
No one knows when they’ll die. A young person could just as easily get a turtle, and die before their turtle does. I have tortoises… and they can love upwards of 80 years. No one would get one if they had your mindset. If you want one, get one, just plan ahead for it. I am going to give a sizable donation to a rescue or zoological park to assure mine will be taken care of after I’m gone.
Your videos have inspired me greatly And I would just like to share my turtles story, she is a 4 year old red ear slider that I had rescued about two years ago the previous owner has abandoned her along with the house they lived in I took her home and cleaned out the nasty tank there was no filter no lights and about 3 inches of poop filled water she has no basking area either I took her to the vet to find out that she had soft shell and a cataract in her right eye as of now she has been doing a lot better with proper housing and all. She is also looking forward to her tank renovations that will be taking place in the next month or two
Omg I'm so happy I found you. I was given a baby turtle because I'm vegan and the owner didn't want it and I literally had to do everything from scratch. I've researched spent tons on money on the turtle only to find out they are the wrong products. I really have grown fond of my turtle and I really do care about him...He loves to watch me dance and sing which is so adorable. I'm so glad I've found you
I was 9 when I got my first turtles (I am now 12) and at first I was doing everything wrong and today I still do some things wrong but I have learned and I make sure my turtle is healthy
Omg girl you literally read my mind! I’ve had my turtle for almost eight years and I still worry about him on the daily! I’m taking him to the vet tomorrow though to prove to myself I’m a good turtle mom 🤣 love your content btw!! 🐢🐢🐢

One of the best synopses I've ever seen - I've been "Turtle guy" for the last 50 + years - starting in the bad old days when there was no easy access to information, and Red Ears died by the millions due to bad commercial food, no husbandry - the basic idea was that turtles were a disposable pet. Ironically, when I met my now wife, in 1991, her 11 year old daughter had a turtle for that very reason. who is now 27 years old, and living in our house - her daughter long gone. I am 67 now, and my joke now is, to her daughter, that she didn't know she made a lifetime commitment when she asked for a turtle - this is even stipulated in my Will
man, your videos have been such a big help for me. someone abandoned these little turtles at the motel I work at and so I've started taking care of them. couldn't have figured out what I'm doing without these handy guides!
thank you so much, my dad, said he was getting me a turtle and a thought I did enough research but after watching this video I realized I had some more thinking to do
Great care video ! I recently found a wild spotted turtle. Caring for her was a mystery until i oline researched ! I learned about brumation . From June 11 till now July 26 I had a chance to correct past mistakes. It took 30 days to acclimate her to aquatic life in a 26 gal. tub habitate. During her first weeks in soil she laid 5 eggs ! [now in a incubator] She is doing very well in captivity . Bert
Honestly, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU for this channel!!! I'm going to be getting my first pet turtle hopefully by the new year, but first I've been researching like crazy, and your channel is the MOST HELPFUL resource I've found yet!!
My parents let me get my first turtle when I was 8, they’ve always been my full responsibility since. I love them but I’ve definitely made mistakes, keeping consistency and fully taking care of an animal when you’re young is really difficult. I would never do that to my kids
Its strange cuz i don't have a turtle. But my BFF has two sooooooo *casually sends BFF all The Turtle Girl videos* Edit:one of the turtle died and the other got lost.
Really want to thank you for your wisdom. I'm 55 years old. My dad passed away last year. He left behind 5 cats and a red eared slider. Cats are pretty basic but the turtle has been a learning experience for me. I'm loving every second. I'm also about to buy a new house. I want to build her a sanctuary outside for the summer months and give her the best life inside as well. She is in a very large tote until we move next month. Luckily, i have a partner who has built pools and taken care of pools for 25 years. He has extensive knowledge in pumps and filters and the overall care of backyard ponds. We are both anxious to move and to give her her best life.
Randomly today, my dad called me and said “Hey remember that turtle I got you when you were younger ? Want another one?” And when I said yes, he came home with a little turtle in a tiny cage. The cage was plastic and it had like two spoons of water in it, some breathing holes on the top and a hatch to put food in. So, all day I’ve been searching on RUclips and google, for tips on caring for the turtle. So far, I don’t think I’m doing too good. My mom isn’t willing to pay more than $25 dollars on a new tank, so I definitely won’t be able to get the basking light, filter, and decorations until a lot later. So I’m hoping that my turtle will last until I’m able to invest in something big ... which will take months because I don’t have a job(I’m 16 btw) 😭 any advice or encouragement for me ?
Kaylaisalwaysright depending on how big it is put it in a 10 gallon. That's 15 bucks. Now put it in a warm sunny spot with an open window. Get a job to pay for a bigger enclosure. Get a 5 dollar basking spot and turtle food. It can be pellets for now
Try tanks at Walmart. Some come with lighting unit. Also check on apps like offer up and let go. You can find a lot some times you can find a whole tank set up on the cheep.
Thank you for the comfort/not stress out about if my turtle is not eating as much as I think he should! I love that you articulate their resilience/adaptability
My grandmother gifted my family a pet turtle a couple years ago, at the time i literally have no senses of responsibility. My parents haven't really been taking care of them properly but know I would like to take care of them the right way. Thank you for this ^^
I just basically rescued a turtle from a family member. Its 10 to 12 years old and never had a proper basking area nor any lighting. Now he finally has a proper setup and a vet visit scheduled. He finally has a proper setup. He lived in a 10gallon his whole life.
My dad told me a story that when I was younger we got a turtle, the place we got it from was disgusting. The workers there didn't take care of the animals or theirselves, the workers were barefoot, it’s disgusting I know. The place was just dirty, and they clearly did not take care of the animals there. My dad noticed that the turtle we were getting wasn‘t doing anything, he was just sitting there. They said he was just a “lazy turtle”, but he wasn't. When we got the turtle, the turtle died the same night. My dad found out it was due to a eye infection so he couldn’t get food, and starvation. We didn't know that he had the eye infection or was starving. it’s just really sad that they take care of animals like this.
sorry i forgot to update you all buy YES! she is okay! my brother found her on the floor a week later. she is healthier than ever and i am forever grateful for everyone's kind words! thank you!!

I found a baby turtle at the Mediterranean seacoast of Spain, Do they strive in seawater or french water?. luckily I got a fish pond on my backyard. I want to let it grow for a while and probably release it there.
I just added a basking enclosure above her tank. I decorated it like some of the videos suggested because of the concerns of her toes getting caught. I have the double zoo med lighting with a 50 watt basking light and a uvb for her other lighting. I also have a cylinder uvb light on the tank when she is swimming around. But she doesn't like going up in to her area. She will go when I put her on the ramp, but she won't stay up....before her basking area she had less water and would put herself on the rock underneath in the tank and stay there for hours....now with more water she never comes out and basks....is she OK?
Hello, I am adopting my first turtle on Saturday and the aquarium comes with it. I have just realised that I probably should ‘balance’ the water, before I put the turtle in it .... is this right? I have set up 1 fancy goldfish tank and 2 angelfish tanks and I balanced the water for a few days prior to putting the fish in., so should I do the same for my turtle? Also for a quick balance of the tanks, I squeeze the Mulm from one of my sponge filters from one of my established fish tanks ... is goldfish or angelfish mulm alright for turtles or would I cross contanimate? I am from Australia and love your videos!
OMG, the scariest thing I found out (mind you I did weeks of research before we took her from a co-worker) is that she frickin sleeps at the bottom of the tank.... I freaked, not gonna lie.
Don't worry they 1 dont sleep for very long and 2 when they do sleep they breath of of air bubbles and 3 it's not hurting them but remember if there ever unrespnive and you can tell thier not breathing check them out and make sure they haven't passed
@@trishahargis7402 she doesn't always sleep at the bottom, but it was an "oh my God did I kill it?" moment that first time. She mostly prefers to sleep with her claws on the ramp supports where the bubbler is.
Hii. I hope your turtles doing ok. A few things I can recommend is making sure the tank is at the right temperature. If the temperature is too low this can cause the turtles body to start to slow down and they will most likely refuse to eat. Another is you can try and feed the turtle very early in the morning, this is usually there peak time where they are really active and awake. Also maybe check it's eyes. To make sure there not puffy. Make sure they are shiny and free of debris. If a turtle is having problems with its eyes, or has something blocking it's vision it will turn down any food 80% of the time. If this is the case. Try running the turtle underwater gently for a few minutes. One more thing make sure when it breaths it's not blowing out bubbles. This usually means a vitamin deficiency or respiratory problems. A good way to fix this is to buy calcium blocks. Usually $5 for a packet at ur local pet shop. Last thing. Sorry. Turtles are attracted to bright foods and alot of the time this could tempt them. Depending on how big ur turtle is you could try slither some strawberries or carrots or something and putting it in the tank. Hopefully this is helpful. Sorry for the rant. Good luck
One of my turtles refuses to eat and has been on the log for a few days now. I have placed it into a separate container for feeding and it has refused the food. I am so worried as it barely moves and breathes bubbles while in the water in a separate bowl. The other one looks okay. Can I get some further advice please?
@@gracefrancois5665 Turtle is blowing bubbles, wheezing, swimming lopsided, gaping or has excessive mucus around nose or mouth This indicates a Respiratory Infection (RI), which can often arise when the turtle does not have access to a dry basking area, or humidity is allowed to build up (common in aquarium setups with a lid). Affected turtles will attempt to bask more (and open their mouths when basking) to try to dry their airways out, and will have mucus build-up in nose/mouth leading to wheezing and bubble blowing. Keeping the turtle's environment too cold, or allowing large fluctuations in temperature (such as keeping the enclosure in a draughty area) can contribute to the development of respiratory infection. Treating respiratory infections Respiratory infections can be eased by keeping the turtle warm and dry. Increase the water and basking temperatures 2 or 3 degrees, and ensure the turtle has access to a dry basking spot, and that the enclosure has no lid. Consider "dry docking" larger, more hardy species for up to an hour a day. Small-scale respiratory infections can clear up on their own if the turtle is kept warm and is able to dry off frequently, but if the symptoms persist for more than 7 days, antibiotics may need to be administered and you should consult a qualified professional Please take your turtle to the vet ASAP.
So informative!! Thank you so much. I've had mine 18 years. Over the last year or so i started having issues with keeping it clean. Well, i was putting LESS water in my 90 gallon tank thinking they needed less. I took pride in their clean tanks so i was so upset when it was no longer clean. Now i know why. I LOVE my babies. Thank you for the info 👍
Hey! I bought 2 turtles last 2 months and the younger one has a soft shell and I don’t know if it hurts them so do you know what to do? And they haven’t been eating since we got them!
thanks so much for this video :) i have 2 turtles that i've had for a couple of years now and i can't even imagine how bad i've treated them. i feel very guilty knowing that i could've taken better care of them, however i want them to have a new start on life and provide them the best one they can have from now on (and don't come at me saying i should've done research before i got them, i'm aware of that, but i was 7 at the time and could barely even read). so, again, thank you for this video and for the content you are making
I have really appreciated your videos. This one was especially helpful since it covered so many bases. I have had a Mississippi (common) mud turtle for about 7 years (gifted to me) and was honestly somewhat negligent due to lack of income/time. I am finally getting around to being the parent to her that I need to be through research which has led to upgrades in our thinking...and soon upgrades to her tank. Thank you for being a source in all of that. I appreciate your passion and will probably be asking some more specific questions on other more relevant videos.
Just rescued a 7yr old Red Eared Slider & my first HUGE mistake was not escape-proofing the tank! MAKE SURE TO COVER THE ENTIRE TANK. I’ve only ever had fish/crustaceans, and never had escape issues without a lid. When he got out, he damaged some tissue on his neck, and it’s been so stressful making sure he heals up quickly and properly. COVER THE TANK. & MAKE SURE IT CAN NOT COME OFF. Have a great day turtle people 🐢 💞
I kept telling myself not to overworry but nothing feels better than to have another human thats knowledgeable on what you're stressing over reassure you that lol 😂
Great video... thank you so much!!! I have subscribed to your channel. I live in Thailand and it's hot temperature all the time, so I keep my 2 turtles outdoors which I think is much easier than indoors in a tank. I have no filter or UV. My set up is different, but very easy to keep. I keep my Chinese Softshell turtle in a huge clay lotus flower pot with sand in the bottom for it to burrow into. Every few days I just tip all the water out of the pot into the garden and then refill it with the hose pipe. My other turtle lives in an old rubber concrete mixing bath thing. He has lots of plants and a big log to climb out on and bask in the sun. Once a week I empty the tub and refill with the hose pipe with clean water. The softshell turtles is albino and 13 years old now and massive (I got her when she was the size of my thumb nail). The Chinese Golden Thread turtle is only 2 years old, and I had 2 when then were babies, but the female was sick when i got her and died. The male is very healthy and has grown a lot. I feed them catfish pellets, mealworms, live guppy fish from my pond, water plants, snails, worms, and the softshell turtle is also a good hunter of any frogs that jump into her bowl to spawn.. I often find an entire skellington of a frog in there one morning!!
I got two musk turtles on Monday they about year old got everything with them Iam 35 never had turtles beofre and Iam learning so much already. So happy to have found your Chanel
i could only fill my tank up half way cause of the filter, i recently got that basking area that you have in the vid and i plan on getting a new filter, so excited!
I’m getting a Red Eared Slider, and I’m watching as many informative and cleaning and set up vids as I can before i get him, and i really wanna scope out the kinda tanks and put in a lot of effort for his set up and basking area to make sure i can make his new home the best i can for him and watching your vids really help me (:

I need help my turtle isn't eating reptile sticks and is only eating shrimp she is not eating at all any sticks because now im worried that she is going to dye and don't know how to feed her the right way so she gets her nutrients and its a red eared slider i think that's what its called please help me :(((
Excellent advice Turtle Girl.
She really is knowledgeable.
You can get dogs cats or leopard geckos. Maybe even fish. :)
My parents just came home with a turtle
how’s he doing?
Omg same 😂 I was shocked!!!
Me too
Same here
Congratulations!!
She is also looking forward to her tank renovations that will be taking place in the next month or two
I know this isn’t funny but when you said 3 inches of poop I kinda lost it

Thank you for taking the time & money to rescue your turtle! 🙏🏼

Can you give me tips (desert turtle btw)
I just got a turtle from santa and i have been researching like crazy thank you so much for helping me❤😊
Omg girl you literally read my mind! I’ve had my turtle for almost eight years and I still worry about him on the daily! I’m taking him to the vet tomorrow though to prove to myself I’m a good turtle mom 🤣 love your content btw!! 🐢🐢🐢

We found some baby turtles in our backyard yesterday and I’m trying to take care of them as much as I can
that's awesome
I instantly had to like when you told us to not stress ourselves out! Thank you! I’m working hard to make a happy turtle home and sometimes I wonder if she’s stressed out because it’s not good enough, I love being able to find helpful tips thank you!
I got a tutle today and he the most adorable thing ever
Dang, I wish I knew this before I got one (I have everything but imma have a lot of headache lol)
I am 67 now, and my joke now is, to her daughter, that she didn't know she made a lifetime commitment when she asked for a turtle - this is even stipulated in my Will
My mom brought home 2 turtles now I’m over here taking care of them 😂😌

man, your videos have been such a big help for me. someone abandoned these little turtles at the motel I work at and so I've started taking care of them. couldn't have figured out what I'm doing without these handy guides!
OMG! I just saw your turtle swim into your ear at 3:03. 😂
thank you so much, my dad, said he was getting me a turtle and a thought I did enough research but after watching this video I realized I had some more thinking to do
Great care video !
I'm going to be getting my first pet turtle hopefully by the new year, but first I've been researching like crazy, and your channel is the MOST HELPFUL resource I've found yet!!
i'm so glad to hear that! Best of luck finding a new friend :)
i used to have a turtle channel but i deleted it for all the hateful comments. you go girl. you made me smile.
My parents let me get my first turtle when I was 8, they’ve always been my full responsibility since. I love them but I’ve definitely made mistakes, keeping consistency and fully taking care of an animal when you’re young is really difficult. I would never do that to my kids
This is a really good point!

Thanks for the heads up a pet owner has a great responsibility to care for their pet for the rest of its life
Randomly today, my dad called me and said “Hey remember that turtle I got you when you were younger ?
Try asking around to family members. I got my 70 gal tank, lamp, filter, and cage decor from family members.
Look on Facebook marketplace or Craigslist for cheap or fee tanks
Use a giant plastic storage tub and some rocks or bricks from outside for a basking dock
I asked for a turtle and got one on my fifth birthday. I'm 18 now. Oh god I feel so bad. I think I gave my turtle an awful life so far
Thank You this is a very good video. It helped me and my daughter allot for caring of her new turtle
Do you have to clean the filter? If so, how often?
when I first got my turtles, I had to learn by fire, but as I went on I learned much from watching and researching.
I've had a common musk turtle for my whole life, her name is Happy. I love her so much !

Please tell me that the place y’all got it from got shutdown cus that is inexcusable care for animals of any kind
the_smol _one I apologize for the late response, but I forgot the name of the place.

Can we use sunlight instead of uvb light?
Yes. 2 hours a day at least!

I found a baby turtle at the Mediterranean seacoast of Spain, Do they strive in seawater or french water?. luckily I got a fish pond on my backyard. I want to let it grow for a while and probably release it there.
Your don’t stress and worry bc turtles are resilient made me feel so much better tysm girl
Very informative. Enjoy your videos. Made some mistakes with our first turtle:(
Do i still need to use basking lights if i keep my turtle next to a window?( he also has places with shadow )
In one of the videos she made it said that the uvb rays can’t go through the window
Thx
My mom found a baby turtle and put it in a bowl idk what kind it is or how to take care of it
What does it have? Red around the neck? A left neck? Yellow spots?
Turt Du thanks for your reply! Yes I’d love to see your turtle care videos ... everything helps!
I’m getting a turtle today and I need to know thing so a big thanks to you:).
Great advice ☺
Thanks Lisa!
My turtle wont eat 😭 ive been scared!
@@gracefrancois5665 Turtle is blowing bubbles, wheezing, swimming lopsided, gaping or has excessive mucus around nose or mouth
This indicates a Respiratory Infection (RI), which can often arise when the turtle does not have access to a dry basking area, or humidity is allowed to build up (common in aquarium setups with a lid).
Treating respiratory infections
Respiratory infections can be eased by keeping the turtle warm and dry. Increase the water and basking temperatures 2 or 3 degrees, and ensure the turtle has access to a dry basking spot, and that the enclosure has no lid. Consider "dry docking" larger, more hardy species for up to an hour a day.
Small-scale respiratory infections can clear up on their own if the turtle is kept warm and is able to dry off frequently, but if the symptoms persist for more than 7 days, antibiotics may need to be administered and you should consult a qualified professional
Please take your turtle to the vet ASAP.

Have a great day turtle people 🐢 💞
a lid to protect from escaping is DEFINITELY super important. thanks for sharing that story, its a good lesson!
