Straight talk from the KavMan. I Love it! I regularly give my tanks the 'tentative' sniff test w/fingers crossed. Just did a major gravel vac in the 12 gal, you wouldn't think that could hold much poop, but it's still a 3 feet long tank, & Ewwww.. Lawdy!! My fish must be SO much happier now ;)

New here, definitely found this helpful. Gunna use activated carbon for a week or two. I’ve cut back on feeding 2 days ago, and was planning on cleaning out the tank the best I could for my guppies. Decided to look if it’s normal and hopefully I won’t be smelling anything anymore. I’ll be watching that other linked video as well. I hate how some of this stuff is overlooked for begginers granted I have a fully planted tank, I found one of the main culprits as one of my javas was so disgusting, I pulled it out before even seeing this video. And I try to keep the tank tidy without interfering with the fishes and shrimps. Finally found some rams horn snails that are pink and I’ll be getting a few more of them for sure. Mainly because they’re stunning. Thank you and also new sub coming your way for being straight to the point and not wasting our time. Can’t wait to never smell this is my room and studio again. Lol.

Hey Kev love the way you present all of your videos and as a retired military to another military veteran we thank you for your service. Keep posting new content. For every Saturday is my Get the Poop out and Water change days. Although right now my large tank with white sand is having green algae growing like crazy on the sand. I vacuumed out and in a day it comes back been working on less light dropped from 12 to 6 hours and probably need to feed once a day instead of 2 times days. So we will see how it all pans out. Keep on Fish keeping my brother!

My tank water is crystal clear always I'm running an FX6 and a marine lane 220 on this tank my only struggle was this crazy algae growth on my sand only. But just started changing what I do to control it it turned my hyger light brightness down and for 6 hours only and 1 time feeding. Only started a day or two ago. After cleaning today substrate is beautiful again. Time will tell I know it's not and instant cure but I will get there

Yeah my downstairs tank was smelling very bad and went to check out what it was only to find there were some dead mystery snails rotting away.

@@KaveManAquatics The thing is that was a few days ago. Few hours after I wrote that comment I went downstairs again today and found a couple my cardinal tetras dead I quickly went to do a water test and everything was wrong ph was too low, ammonia was very high, nitrates high, and nitrites were high. I did a 50% water change and set up another tank so I could move them to clean water in the meantime. Will have to test the water tomorrow and see how it is.

I love this video! Saved my house from spelling like "hard boiled eggs left in the sun" haha. I also have a video idea. I know you keep canister filters but maybe make a video on how to clean a hang on back filter or even a sponge filter. I've looked on yt a lot and I don't see videos of how often and how to clean one of those filters when you keep African cichlids.

Hi. I have a 35x15x15 Axolotl tank. I'm using Hygger double sponge filters X2 (one filter to the left and other to the right). Both filters are powered by an Eheim 400. I use Seachem Prime and Stability on a weekly basis during 30% water changes. During water changes I move the sand around to unearth any waste and then hoover over the sand, sucking up waste. Axolotls only eat once or twice a week feeding on earthworms and frozen bloodworms. I've added a large pouch of activated carbon but still there is a bad odour in the tank? What else can I do remove bad smell?

You can definitely have a funk free fish tank! Don't give up yet! 😊💪 One thing I think I forget to mention is the food itself...some foods smell worse than others, so try to switch it up too if all else fails.

Kev I'm from Philippines got the 2 asf5 sponge filter n then 2 ASF 1 filter..got hang on filter but they not strong 180L/H 2 of that..the poop stuck..hmm.. buying water wave..any recommendations.my my friend..

Wow, thank you for this video! I just bought Nutrafina Cycle, is that okay to add? It says it neutralizes ammonia and nitrite. My tank smells but I'll see tomorrow if that liquid works
Never used that product. But like mentioned in the video, adding products is just a temp fix to an underlying problem.
After almost all my died a few weeks back from heater malfunction, ive had 2 bacteria blooms, then white fuzz and now that rotten smell. Ive re-added purigen to my fx2 and have had to clean both fx6 filters and fx2 filter twive from slimy gunk in the canisters and hoses. Smh. Its been rough brother! I did a water change this morning and still have rotten smell. Theres no dead fish and no ammonia or nitrites. Very very nitrates though. Ive cleaned the rim and lids also.
What are the possibilities of stirring up the substrate good enough to vac the crap out of it?

Hi! I have the Fluval 407 filter that has been cycling my tank for about three weeks now. My bio media tray is only half full which leads to me wondering- when I take it apart to rinse the sponges etc as in your other video, am I able to add more bio media? I have some ceramic rings in there now and am hoping to add some Matrix on top to fill the empty space, but am unsure if this will disrupt the bacteria that’s already growing. I do know to not replace the current stuff, but am very unsure on adding new stuff to what exists😅
You can safely add more bacteria to fill your trays completely, no problem 😊

Absolutely, no matter where you put it it always lasts about a month.
I think I'm going to pick up some carbon filters for my filters. I have filtered media but not like that. I have crushed Coral that's been used for a while. Maybe I need to change it
Carbon will definitely help with smell, but keep in mind theres something else causing the smell to begin with.

I was doing water changes and vacuuming but my tank was cloudy and dirty the next day. Couldn’t figure it out. Then it dawned on me to clean my filter and bam! Water was clear and beautiful the next morning

I have a question, new to this, i have a smelly tank, I have 3 above water live plants, no dead fish, I may be over feeding but my cory cat look skinny to me, could it be lack of water flow? Maybe too many fake plants??? My betta look healthy, fins look great. Water change done and cleaned the sand. my water is cloudy but ph 7, Gh high, Kh moderate middle40-80ish, tank at 74deg, trace to zero nitrates nitrites and ammonia. Not sure what to do. I do have a sponge filter ran with bubbler and a hanging electric fliter.

How much actives carbon would you use for a 45 gallon tank? I bought a new aqueon 200 canister filter and it came with quite a large mesh bag full that fills the entire tray. It would be expensive to replace this every month. Could i get away with using less.

My tank doesn’t have any fish yet, I have a couple aquatic plants they seem to be healthy. My tank isn’t cloudy really but has a terrible stench. I’m thinking it’s the potting soil there’s some twigs in there that I’m thinking is causing it. Should I redo my tank with soil that doesn’t have any sticks or other decomposing matter? Not sure what to do.

New aquarium without fish in it yet. My first aquarium. I've been doing the fish food "feeding" method to start nitrogen cycle. But I added manzanita wood and now it smells horrid. YOu should never have a smell issue. If you do, something else is happening. The carbon should remove the smell temporarily though.

I have a brand new tank. It’s not 2 weeks old yet and it has a smell. My wife says it’s like pee. Last week I did a vacuuming and Sunday I did a 80% water change. Filter are brand new and no dead fish. What’s my problem???

Hello I wanted to know why my aquarium water smells like chlorine or more closely to pool water could there be a similar smell to something else?
So I bought it yesterday its 12 liters plastic one. I cleaned the inside cleaned the rocks and ornament with cold water till water was clear I have no plants, I've placed them in the aquarium filled it with lukewarm water put in the filter sponge cartridge one.
I've put in the water treatment liquid in the one that takes out chlorine as instructed but may be tiny bit more, turned on the filter and noticed that the water smells like pool water it was on for all night and still is on and still smells like it.
My aquarium is for tropical fish I've not setup the heater yet as I've got no fish yet what could be causing it?
Is the liquid not helping or something else?

I dont have carbon in my filter because everyone says to use sponges and media. So would i just count on water changes?
You can add carbon just for a week to get any potential smells out and then remove it. It doesnt have to stay indefinitely. But yes, water changes will also eventually get the smell out as well😁
Wassup Kev ok so my tank doesn’t smell like rotten eggs lol but it does have a musty smell though… It’s kinda hard to explain… Best way I can describe the smell is it smell like prime
My tank is smelly, the water is clear and the fish seem happy. But it smells pretty bad. I just recently got into the hobby and got a fish tank and a goldfish, so it was a new tank and water about a week ago. I’m not sure what to do about it, I have the activated carbon in the filter, but I have not tried to change the water yet since it’s only been a week. Would that solve my problem? I think it is from over feeding in the beginning and the poop buildup, but I don’t know if a partial water change is what I need to do to fix it. I have been testing and everything seems fine, the ammonia is the only thing that worries me and it’s about .5-1 ppm. Any help is appreciated

Please help bro been having my 180 gallon for almost 4 years and changed the water caught a first time ever bacterial bloom and added couple fish from quarantine in there but my tank has been having a really bad smell since those I don’t know what to do help
If the bloom happened out of no where you may have a dead fish decomposing in the tank somewhere...You gotta find that thing and get it out or it will continue to spike ammonia levels. Never heard of that type of carbon. I’ve only ever used the activated carbon type. Sorry I couldn’t help.

KM do you recommend leaving the activated carbon bag in the cannister filter all of the time or just use it when there is a problem with the clarity or smell of the water? Thanks Bro.
All chemical media needs to be replaced every 30 or so days. It's your choice to continue running it in your filter but its not a necessity. I always run Purigen because it does help in a bit more water clarity 😊

Hey Kev, got a question. Thinking about to get some chemical filtration (seachem purigen) on my fx6. I already ordered 2 little bags for my 160 gallon. Got some oscars in it swimming and i'm in a facebook group, but some of these people say that chemical filtration causes hole in the head and that sort of crazy stuff. Is that true? Because i don't get it why chemical filtration can cause hith. Thanks!
Some say that carbon can cause HITH in Oscars. Not so much the Purigen. But while I have heard about this, I havent found anything conclusive yet...so not sure how accurate it all is. Im currently using only Purigen with my 2 Oscars in the 150

So I’ve realized this after feeding certain pellet fish food. Not feeding more than what can be consumed, no dead fish , just the food.

My stinking problem in my heavily planted 10 gal was rotting betta bulbs that i forgot about. Couldnt figure out the stench until one started floating today. Holy cow those smell when they go bad. Using a carbon pack to clean it up.

Hey Kev, first, prayers to all those who lost their lives on 9/11. I have a 100g acrylic all male cichlid tank with 2 Tidal 110s on it turning 900 gals an hour. Have carbon as one of the layers of media. I change the carbon about every 5-6 weeks. My tank is crystal clear and never smells. Oh and I always GET THE POOP OUT Thanks bro...

I’m not new, but I didn’t know it was the activated carbon doing the heavy lifting on my larger tank. Mostly because nobody ever taught me, and I’ve always use filters with carbon until now because my small tank will be a shrimp tank eventually so I opted for a sponge filter which I’m not familiar with and I’m not liking AT ALL.
Totally understand. But you can still get your water clear without the need for carbon. Over lighting and over feeding can contribute to cloudiness among other things. Deep sand beds or substrates can create pockets of hydrogen sulphide, the sulphur component of said gas has a distinctive "eggy" smell. If you aren't using a deep sand bed purposefully for anaerobic conditions to remove nitrates then 1. turn over the substrate while cleaning. 2. introduce Malaysian trumpet snails (fresh water) to help disturb it.
A tell tale sign this is happening is if you remove decoration that is buried, and it has turned black. The sudden release of a large amount of this can also be toxic to the aquarium inhabitants.

Why does my fish swim against the bubbles
Hey Kev im a second gen chiclid keeper, my dad got out of the hobby 25 years ago and now im taking over! I have a problem with ammonia straight outta my tap about 0.50-0.75 ppm. I setup a new tank just the other day and its already smelling like rotten egggs. I have brand new plants, no dead fish, all new filter media sponges etc . But idk what is causing the smell still. In addition I had an ammonia spike yesterday to 1ppm. And after i did a 80% water change to get it down its still coming up as pretty close 1ppm! So i ordered a under the counter 3 stage filtration system that im going to hook up straight to my tap that’s supposed to get rid of all the bs in tap water. It should be zer0 ppm, and hopefully my smell would go away because im putting cleaned out filtered water. What do you think bro? I used seachem prime plus stability for 2-3 now, still large amount of ammonia, I really feel its because my tap water is messed up. Am I doing it right w the water filtration addiing to my tap?
The water filtration will def help. But your tank probably isnt cycled yet if you set it up "just the other day" Thats why you're having ammonia problems. I wouldnt worry about the ammonia in your tank if your dosing with Prime, it will detoxify it. adding the stability will help boost your cycle. So get the tank cycled first and then determine if you really need the source water filtration. Even if .5 ammonia is coming in, when you water change and add prime like you always should that .5 will be detoxified long enough for your bacteria to take care of it.

Mine smells like fresh potting soil, or that smell after a rain.
The one my parents cared for when I was a kid, and the ones at my local aquarium smell like fish water.
Not like rotten fish, but fresh fish.
Same for may newly set up aquarium, are both these normal aquariums smell or there is an issues?
@@totaal-ktkoota1355 New aquariums have to adapt to the bio load. As long as it doesn't smell foul, I wouldn't worry too much.

@@totaal-ktkoota1355 Just keep doing a 10%water change every week until the beneficial bacteria population starts to grow. Also, plants. I can't recommend living plants enough. Aquatic plants are an extremely important part of the ecosystem.

I need urgent help! I do a 25% water change once a week! I use fake plants so there is no dead plants! I vacuum one every week clean filter sponges out once a week! PH levels are perfect! Not over feeding tank is crystal clear! But my tank smells terrible! I have the aqua one tank! I’m starting to think it’s the filter sponges! But the aqua one tank can only have the one certain filter sponges placed in it.
You didnt mention your filter cleaning schedule...The smell could be coming from your filter. Also, keep in mind that dead fish can end up in the filter as well.
I’m sure this don’t have nothing to do with this video but when adding lake salt and Malawi buffer do you do it every weekly water change, every other week, or once a month? How do you usually do yours if I may ask?
Whenever you do a water change you have to make sure though that your only adding salt and buffer for the water being replaced and not the entire tank once you have the level you want.
I don’t add Malawi buffer anymore because I used aragonite sand as a substrate. It’s the more natural way of keeping PH high and stable. I add the Cichlid lake salt during every water change only for the amount of water being replaced.

What heater is the best one to get for a 125 gallon tank?
Hey Dan I have a 100g and I use 1 EHEIM Jager Heater 300 watt. ( Amazon about $25 ) Works great, keeps the temp right where it should be, and I keep my house very cold. Have thermometers at each end of tank and they both read the same. Great heater, hope this helps...

Could it be that if you have a bare bottom tank there's nothing to drop the crud so it makes your tank smell?
You see I have a 2.5 gallon it never smells it's a bare bottom same water almond leaves no problem.
My second tank is I think 6 gallons I did a complete water change I didn't wash off any of the decorations but it's a bare bottom tank usually the water doesn't smell
I live in Taiwan but I'm an American I have to let the water sit 3 days and add small pieces of almond leaves into the water because the pH is through the work because the water's volcanic
I have a filter and as I said it's a bare bottom tank there's not too much junk as I only have one betta fish and I only feed pellets and bloodworms one by one so there's not a lot of like food waste and if there is fish poop well it's most likely getting sucked up onto the filter sponge.
Could it be the water smells because the water's volcanic. Almond leaves do a good job of softening the water pretty well
Before that everything in my tank was dying. My male date is could only live for no more than 6 months. The only plant that could survive was a newbius before I got the almond leaves females could live one year.
My fish tank stinks but I check water parameters are great I do weekly water changes it’s a 29 gallon and I only have a small gourami and 3 small Cory I don’t over feed and do big water changes and I also don’t have plants but the water smells really horrible
May be something in your filter, how often do you clean it?
@@KaveManAquatics every week I use a sponge filter I’m gonna try phosguard and see if that helps cause it might be algae
