- Doing water changes is an important part of the hobby. Our fish deserve the cleanest possible home and yea, we love to look at our clean tanks 😊
But how do we determine WHEN to water change an aquarium. Do our fish hold up a sign that says "clean me"? lol Of course not.
So how do we know WHEN to do them....Simple!

You should put a pothos plant in the big tank, I run a 200 gallon with 12 6- 10 inch frontosa and I don’t see over 15ppm nitrates ever I do water changes to keep phosphates low and diatoms at bay
@@Whobefit My guys will eat the pothos. Tried that in the past.
Afternoon Kev. One of my wet pets has an eye injury from being nicked on by another fish. What kind of treatment can I give him to heal? I did add some stress coat to the tank. Thank you in advance Sir🙏🏾
Beginner question here: I have a decently planted tank here, from what I understood from your nitrogen cycle explanation, plants will consume the NitrAte so I'll not see the level rise all that much if I don't overfeed. When would I know when to change my water if I don't see the nitrate level go up because my plants eat it? Or what I'm saying makes no sense because I understood wrong?
Love the videos was gifted a tank about 4 weeks ago now i have 3 and have more on the way scary how much i grown ti love fish
Since I found your channel my tank has been so crystal clear. My main tank is in the living room and when the pizza delivery guy delivered our food he stated that my tank was so clear that it look HD quality lol. Thank you again and looking forward to more videos.
HD!!! Drinking water on em! Lol

You should post your tank
In my opinion. This is the best fish channel on RUclips.
Appreciate you bro! 😊💪
I had a freshwater aquarium about 20 years ago and eventually gave up after suffering an Ick infection that got out of hand. Back then, there wasn’t a lot of information available on the internet to the average hobbyist, unlike the wealth of information and ease of accessing the information that there is now. I’ve recently decided to try the hobby again, and during this journey of planning and preparation to start my new tank, I discovered your channel and have been binge-watching all of it. Your presentations are informative and easy to follow, and your personality is engaging and keeps me coming back for more. I can’t thank you enough for doing what you do and helping this newbie to become an informed and empowered fish keeper.
Well Im glad you decided to come back to the hobby and glad you found the channel as well! 😊 Thanks for that positive feedback! Happy to hear you're enjoying the channel!
I got a 38 gal no fish and no aqua plant yet and just set it up today any advise from you.
Hey Kev, hope you don’t get sick of hearing how much of a source of wisdom and inspiration you are! I’ve always found myself circling back to your vids whenever I’ve been stumped 😁
Don’t stress if there are too many specifics here but if you’ve got the time, I had a question around what you define a water change as!
I’ve got a heavily (give or take) planted tank that seems to keep the nitrates in check. I’ve done water testing every week for the first few months and have always read NH3 = 0, NO2 = 0, NO3 = 20-40, sometimes slightly higher as I figured out the feeding schedule. I lose about 5-10% water to evaporation over the course of a month, so unless nitrate has been higher than 20-40, I usually just do a top up. Do you think this is enough to keep the minerals stocked and if not, do the GH and KH test kits tell me if I’m running low?
I’ve definitely had a few slightly inexplicable losses that I’ve had to chalk up to aggression from my Angels, buuuuut always a possibility I’m overlooking something. It’s only rummynose tetras and guppies I’ve lost, so questionably sensitive fish to those kinds of parameter changes yeah?
Thanks so much either way man, already given me so many life saving tips as is! Just hoping to get a handle on this before I find out the hard way 😅
Awesome tips as I just set up a new African Cichlid tank. I’m really sticking close to this channel now!! Thanks Kev, you’re the best teacher. 🌹

I usually just do 80% water change every Thursday regardless of what the tests say. Usually it’s about 20ppm with 12 adult discus, 9 angels, 2 blue phantom plecos, in a 125 gallon. Been doing it this way for years without issue.
Straight to the point. No bs. This is why I watch your videos over everyone else’s.

No‼️‼️‼️ I have a 75 gallon fish tank it’s been over a year I’ve never change my water I do 10% if needed water is life in a check it every week and it’s in perfect shape
Even though your plants are helping to reduce nitrate levels, your fish are not receiving enough beneficial nutrients they could be from fresh clean water. It's like living your life underground your whole life without ever getting fresh air. Sure you'll survive....
@@KaveManAquatics Not necessarily. Older, established aquariums work like bodies of water in nature. The water evaporates and is then replenished by topping off the aquarium much like how in nature, water evaporates and is then replenished by rain. It still gets new nutrients from the water top off.
Hey Kev! I'm new to the hobby but I want to give you a huge thank you for all the info that you've been pushing out! I'm enjoying the hobby a lot more thanks to your videos. Keep up the great work!!
Awesome thank you! Glad you've been enjoying the channel! 😊💪
Hey KavBoss , I think I may have added too much aquarium salt in 45 gallon. I added 2 TBS two days ago when I did 1/3 water change. Today I cleaned the filter media and added matrix but left all other media to protect BB. ALSO added 5 Tbs salt. Do you think it’s too much? What should I watch for? What’s best method to remove?
You didnt add too much. The regular dose is 1 TBL per 5 gallons. Your regualr water changes will eventually dilute all the salt you added

I’ve had my goldfish tank set up since February and i only reached 40 ppm of nitrates recently. Does this mean that i only need to do water changes every 3 months?
Water changes are done for more than just nitrate reduction. In your case I would do them at least once a month, even though your nitrates are staying low 😊
@@KaveManAquatics ok thank you i really appreciate it
I am cycling my tank, on day 9. fishless,.. using stability. My values are ammonia 0.5ppm, nitrites 8.0ppm, and nitrates 80ppm. should I do a partial water change?
I’m still waiting for my tank to cycle. It’s at 5 ppm right now. I recently learned from you that doing a water change before it’s cycled is like resetting the timer. So, I’m patiently waiting. I also just put in a wave maker and my fish seem happy. Thanks for all the great info! I think you have the best channel out there for beginners in this hobby.
Sounds like your fish are in good hands Sharon! Glad you've been finding the channel helpful, and thanks for joining the Membership!!!
Wait really? Doing a water change before it’s cycled is like resetting the timer??
@@FellowNick Not really, but yes you can kill off the very little bacteria you have that has started to grow. The point is, it’s not necessary to do water changes while your tank is cycling. You need ammonia in your tank for bacteria to grow.
@@KaveManAquatics Makes so much sense I know you didn’t mean like an actual timer. That makes sense I got my tank like 3 weeks ago and did a fish in cycle I lost some fish and have already done 2 water changes so makes sense why there is still some ammonia and stuff no nitrites or nitrates at all. I use Stability and prime.
@@KaveManAquatics I do have ceramic rings so by now I should have bacteria always on those correct?
The water that comes out my tap is about 35-40ppm so I never get below 40ppm! I don't complicate it I just do a water change every 2 weeks.
Exactly! Whatever works best for you is best 👍
Correct me if I am wrong, but api nitrates tests isn't accurate especially when testing an african cichlids tank/high pH. My api read >80ppm while Sera only read
I have heard and read that API test kit can give false readings. And that its best to replace old test kits. So no, you're not wrong.
Semper Fi Devil! Thanks for all the great info!👍🏽 Question: With those (2)210 gallon tanks, are they in your basement? Currently cycling my tank after a crash
I’m at around .25 ammonia and .25 nitrite and 5.0 nitrate
Hold off until 40 nitrate for a water change?
Dosing with prime and stability. I have a shrimp that survived and a few living plants
Hi Kev great vid! Beginner here with 20 gallon goldfish tank with 2 goldfish inside. New tank and its been 3 weeks dose with prime and stability every day, ammonia level safe now but nitrate nitrite still very high even after 70% and 30% water change.
No plant and sand inside the tank.
What should i do? Need your advice. Thanks
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Oh my word I’ve been keeping fish for nearly 6 yrs and did not know all of what you shared! Nitrate levels at 40?! Crazy! I would just do water changes weekly regardless!

I run a planted aquarium with around 20 4" to 6" fish in a 200g and struggle to get my nitrates above 5ppm just top up about 10g every two weeks.
I love your videos! I am a very busy person and I don’t have 15-20 minutes to waste on videos that the point never comes out. I really like how you put the point no nonsense straight to the front of your video, at that point, I know, this is the video for me and I will spend whatever amount of time watching the video. That’s because I know what I am getting Versus randomly searching. You’re doing a great job. Keep it up! Love your style.
My nitrate and nitrite were too high. But my ammonia was about .25 to .50 ppm. So i changed the water and added prime and water conditioner. I just bought the stability yesterday. So, can i still be able to add stability right now to do fast cycle?
Hopefully I'm not so late to the party that I don't get an answer, but I'm fairly new to the hobby. Everytime I test, I start with testing ammonia levels, and if there's even a slight trace of ammonia, I change the water about 30%. My question is, should I be starting by testing nitrate levels first before anything else?
i felt very consoled when you show us your nitrate. I was getting paranoia about that nitrate level when i did those test. I water change every week and do not like to add plants. it is an office tank so not very nice for me to add too much stuff in when i don't have that kind of time for plants maintenance. thanks for your note of encouragement and easy to understand information. clap clap!
I hear you, I like my tanks clean and simple looking. Less is more for me. Glad I could! 😊💪
How often should I do water changes? I only have 1 bass and 1 crawfish in my tank
I have a question, my water is been crystal clear for 5 weeks, so I don't know if I should keep it like that or do a little 25% water change...
I have fresh and salt, my fresh always stays almost non existent. Buuuut those tanks are fahaka puffers and mbu puffers, so not heavily stocked tanks but fish they get good size. My salt water predator tanks they never get over 40, when they get to forty ppm nitrate I panic lol and do at least a 40 percent water change
Great video. What's in the tank on your right or your left-hand side?
Before I even got into fish i can tell you a little story, a neighbour had a little tiny tank im talking big enough for 2 goldfish if that, but shock horror they had the biggest fish I've ever seen in my life in this one dirty muddy water tiny tank, i know now one was a sailfin plec he must have been 2 ft long, along with the other huge grown fish and they never did a thing regarding cleaning, im baffled how enough oxygen actually kept these fish alive in such a small tank they could hardly swim, now im into fish and read up as much as possible im wondering how they survived
Quick answer When its dirty
All my fish jus die this morning n only one of my albino red tail cat survive I’m hella sad I jus change the tank water too bc it was getting dirty but I think it bc I feed them tm food
I thought I understood my small little 10 gallon tank that I had set up about 10 years ago. I had it going to watch the little Glofish Danios play and a Betta Splenda during the time I fought Lymphoma (blood cancer). Those little Danios would form little swimming patterns (sometimes just 2" wide) on their own and sometimes another one would join in; then there were the games of chase.
About 2 months ago, I woke up one morning to find most of my fish dead. I was heart broken, I told my husband that they were innocent, they did nothing to deserve this! It was an ammonia spike! I started doing research, and that's how I found you. The Stability saved the fish I could save, especially after a second spike. Let me just say I have one tough catfish and one tough Betta, they survived both spikes. So I need to *thank you* so much!
Sorry for your loss, but super glad I was able to help! 😁

Nitrates, nitrites and ammonia are 0 💪🏽 still need to set up tank lol
Yes you do lol
@@KaveManAquatics finally done it today brother Jeff 👊🏽
actually 40 ppm nitrates is way to high, your nitrate should not exceed 10-20 ppm.
"The danger of excessive nitrates in aquariums is often misunderstood by aquarium hobbyists. Although far less toxic than ammonia or nitrite, high nitrate levels-called nitrate poisoning or nitrate shock, can also kill aquarium fish.
Nitrate poisoning occurs when fish are exposed to gradually rising nitrate levels over any period of time that regular tank maintenance is not performed. Overfeeding and overstocking of fish are also significant contributors to slowly rising nitrate levels.
Nitrate shock occurs when fish are suddenly exposed to a vastly different level of nitrate, up to several hundred mg/L. Although nitrate shock usually refers to a sudden increase in the level of nitrate, fish can be equally shocked if nitrate levels suddenly drop dramatically.
Symptoms and Mortality
These new behaviors in your fish can be signs that they may be dealing with a new nitrate issue, originating in your tank over the last 24-48 hours:
Loss of appetite
Rapid gill movement, high respiration rates
Listlessness, acting dazed
Loss of equilibrium, disorientation
Lay on the tank bottom
Curl head to tail (advanced stages)"

I enjoy every single video you produce. My tank is doing well, the fish are thriving. But....I don't know exactly how much to feed the fish. Everything I read contradicts everything I read, you know. My Cichlids are about a year old, beautiful, 3-4 inches, most of them. I have about 20 fishies in my 75 gallon tank, do frequent changes of water and keep the substrate really clean, filter changes with chemical media monthly. How much should I feed? I feed Cichlid pellets .... thanks Kev!
Glad you’re enjoying the channel Holly! At 3-4 inches you can feed them twice a day. No more than they can eat in less than 1 minute for each feeding. When they get older and bigger, closer to 5-6 inches in size, you can switch to once a day feedings. I also fast all my fish on Sundays 😁
DOES a UV sterilizer help with Nitrate levels?
I am getting a 75 Gallon aquarium. For the Orlushy submergible heaters will one 300w be enough? On Amazon it says up to 55 Gallons so would I need a 500w? I might do 2 200w though

@@KaveManAquatics 🔥 bro appreciate you my guy.
@Kev my 125 is now overstocked with my African Cichlid’s. Sunday I did an 80% water change and today I seen a few fish rubbing themselves on the substrate and decor so I check my water parameters. My Nitrate level is already between 40-80. Should I go ahead and do a 50% water change today or let it ride until Sunday my normal water change day?
Let it ride till Sunday. You'll do more harm changing water parameters again so soon then the higher nitrate levels will. Too much of a change in Temp or PH of new water can cause irritation making them flash. Give them time to adjust.
See you did another video recently where you showed you’re tank had 160ppm nitrates. You replied to my comment about how high that was (admittedly I was wrong about the sump. I was thinking skimmer, but it’s not effective in freshwater.) you said 160ppm was nothing. Can you explain what you’ve learned that’s changed your opinion?
There are many studies out there that get into how high nitrates can get before it really starts to affect adult fish. And its much higher than 160...But as a general standard rule many in the hobby stick with 40PPM as the number to do a water change. It's kind of ingrained in the hobby...But I believe that number is faulty....but more research needs to be done before I recommend anyone elses tanks get to these higher levels. As for my tanks they consistently reach 80-160 weekly....with no issues.
I got Aquarium test strips (Bosike) and I swear nitrates never change after water change; I suppose the API master water test is absolutely better than these strips.
Absolutely better...yes!
My tank seems to get to 10-15 ppm in a week. I do 20 to 30 percent weekly (estimate includes sump volume). But I'm beginning to doubt the accuracy of the JBL test strips I'm using
Liquid tests are more accurate then strips. I recommend API Master Test Kit. It’s like 25$ and the includes around 800 uses or so.
What @FellowNick said 👆😊
How about Father Fish. Who never changes the water😂
I do things my way here. Follow him if you want to.
@@KaveManAquatics I'm on the water change team. I'm just asking your opinion
@@animablo father fish still has to top off the water as it evaporates, which adds minerals to the water, he even says this himself. It's essentially still a water change.
is 80ppm nitrates REALLY?? that high?
i can't find much of scientific proof showing that nitrates being high are a problem.
The funny thing is I also get comments from people saying 40 PPM is waaayyy to high, lol IMO no, 80ppm isnt really that high, especially for adult fish.
Excellent upload Kev as always. I run at 40ppm after 7 days religiously…that said, it’s 5ppm straight from the tap regardless so like so many others I’m on the back foot from the off so a weekly W/C of 50-60% with a filter clean bi monthly is undertaken. When it’s not filter clean time it’s gravel vac maintenance and this causes me no issues…..Sunday’s are definitely fish tank maintenance day…Would be interesting to hear other peoples schedules.🇬🇧
Sounds like the perfect maintenance schedule. Because it's very similar to mine lol 😊💪
Hey Kaveman i use stick to check nitrates and i simply cannot bring my water to a good level.I vacuum my gravel a couple times a week and change maybe 20% water weekly.Thinkin og changing plants to live plants to try to improve.Bill
Increasing your water change amount may help. Adding live plants will definitely help.
Do all aquariums require a lid? The tank I bought didn’t come with one and I’m wondering if that’s helping my tank be so cloudy
No they dont. If you have fish that jump then you'll want a lid to prevent them from jumping out. A lid also helps with evaporation. But no, its not required and its not causing cloudy water.
My book on getting crystal clear water can definitely help! 😁 It's short, to the point, and covers all the causes and solutions for cloudy water. Comes in eBook and Paperback. I promise you won't be disappointed! Check it out here - bit.ly/clearH2O
Great content. I don't keep cichlids, but I find your info helpful. I had a betta in a 10. Nitrates never went more than 10-20. I changed water every 3-4 weeks 50%.
He recently died with unknown causes (but he showed dropsy). Water parameters were totally fine.
But now I'm wondering if I should've done 10-20% changes a little more frequently. Not because of nitrates, but just keeping the water fresh and like you said, replenish the minerals.
I'll be changing the tank to white clouds, but trying out anoxic filtration. If I can master that, I'm going to try the same with shell dwellers. Whenever I have the space for that. But that'll keep the nitrates at 0 if successful.
Good luck with the new set up and sorry to hear about your betta. Its possible more frequent changes may have helped but you never know. Its always tough to tell what a fish dies from especially when parameters are good.
HELLO NEW SUB
Hi! Thanks for the sub! 😁
One day I was courise what would my water test at after a water change shocking the lvls where still pretty high. Why would thay happen if I'm doing 40 to 50% water changes and it's been running for 8months now
Test your source water! You’re probably adding it right back in.
LOL..very entertaining Kev! Why would I want to watch anything else, LOL...Have a good weekend. Beatiful tanks.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
I have simple glofish and my tank has high Kh and Ph but zero nitrates and zero nitrites and zero chlorine. The water is from a private well and goes through a UV light so the water is clean. My glofish seem to do fine in it. Should I worry about long term affects of high Kh and high Ph in the water?
If your gold fish are already acclimated to the higher PH then they'll be just fine. I wouldnt try to adjust it at all. When it comes to PH keeping it stable is the most important thing.
Ok bro I need your help. So my tank that I have until my upgrade gets here Thursday is a 30Gallon. Somehow one of my fish got ich and of course it spread its course and everyone got it. I used API super ich cure and followed the instructions exactly. I lost 2 fish to the ich and it looked like it helped but I noticed today the ich is back on some of the fish just not as bad. What should I do now? I also started to use stress guard like a week ago right about the time of the ich coming around so not sure if it’s helping or how they even got the ich. I want to completely irradiate it.
Gradually raise the water temperature to about 86F throughout few days and then use medications for ich. I was able to eliminate the ich before it went out of control. But you should wait for Kevs response, he has top level experience in aquarium hobby
@@LuV2SPDup I can’t go to 86° my fish like 82° max, Bala Sharks, Tiger barbs and a pleco.
@@FellowNick, I see. I think 82F should be enough to reduce the duration of ich life
@@LuV2SPDup I already used the medicine..
Raising the temperature slowly to 85-86 is the best method to speed up the life cycle of the ich. Head over to my facebook group and search the group files for an awesome article on exactly how to handle ich - facebook.com/groups/kavemanaquatics
I have 9 frontosa in a 150-gallon. I noticed a red blood color around the fins. Is this just the fish growing, or is this a parasite
Could definitely be disease. Look up Flukes
Love your channel but don’t necessarily follow your methods. You can’t stress the importance of algae and plants in the nitrogen and ammonia arguments. I change my water at about 30% about 1x a month. My fish are happy and the tank is not overstocked. I used to breed and sell cichlids years ago and the only times I’ve had problems was when I was too hands on.
That’s understandable, but some people don’t like plants or algae in the tank. Which is why things have to be done differently when you don’t want, or CANT have plants.
My tank just finally cycled and the nitrates just hit 40ppm today. However the ammonia is still between 4 and 8ppm and the nitrite js still at 5ppm. So I expect the nitrates to get much higher. Should I water change now or will it crash the cycle since it's so new? (I do have fish in the tank). I don't want to kill my fish but also don't want to crash the cycle since it took me so long to finally get it to cycle
YOur tank hasnt finished cycling. But since you're already at 40 ppm of nitrate, yes water change. Continue dosing Prime and Stability daily until you have 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites and 40 ppm of nitrate. Sorry for the super late reply. Hopefully your tank has cycled by now.
I usually hit 60-80 in a week. 40 ppm is a thing of the past 😀😀 I got a sausage fest in the 125 😅
Diddo bro 🤣
My ammonia looks like its at .25. From what I read and see, there is supposed to be zero ammonia. Now what?
Should be fine... what filters are you using?
Actually doing a 90% water change on my goldfish still thrive and happy
Lets GOO!!!!
Ammonia 0 nitrites really high around 4 or 5 nitrates 20 ppm. Did a 90% water change cleaned all decorations and did a gravel vac. Why are my nitrites so high?
Because your tank isnt cycled and your water changes are disrupting the cycle. Stop doing water changes and follow this - ruclips.net/video/gt6bP4_p7iA/видео.html
I really love these videos! They are the best!😊 Can someone please give me some advice? I am a new fish mommy and I’m having a problem cycling my tank. I have two small Comet goldfish in a 20 gallon aquarium. That’s the size Petco told me to get. I have had this aquarium for two months and I have yet to see nitrites or nitrates. I had ammonia every day until I switched to Publix purified water because there is ammonia in my tap water. I was using Seachem Prime to condition it, but my fish still seemed very stressed. Petco told me to get the purified water. We have terrible water here in Florida. My fish are doing much better. Now I have no ammonia. I also have not seen nitrites or nitrates. I have been doing 25% water changes at least once a week because my tank starts looking bad and I don’t want my fish in that dirty water. That’s also around the time when my youngest goldfish starts sleeping at the surface. I did 20% this week and I’ll see how that goes. I feed them a small pinch of flakes twice a day. I switched to pellets for their morning meal, but then my older goldfish started bullying my younger one for some reason. I switched back to flakes twice a day and that has stopped. I really need some advice on cycling my tank. This has been going on too long. I even bought a new Fluval 207 canister filter. Now I have the filter that came with my Aqueon tank and the Fluval running. I have an EcoBio-Stone as well. I am trying to do everything to keep my fish alive and well! I am at a loss as to why my tank won’t cycle. Can someone please give me some advice? I have read everything out there and watched numerous videos. I finally decided to stop bothering all the fish lovers at Petco. Lol Sorry this is so long, but I wanted to give as much info as possible. Thank you!
You need to have some ammonia or your beneficial bacteria will starve. You have to build up your bacteria that eats ammonia, so get some ammonia in there. Check you ammonia levels before you change your water -- you don't want to get rid of most of it, because you need to feed the bacteria. If you didnt add live bacteria, do that right away. Seachem Stability is what I have. If you didn't add that, then you don't have any bacteria to feed. In the meantime, add Seachem Prime every day to neutralize the ammonia and with water changes, and then to neutralize nitrites once they appear. After that you should see nitrates.
Great advice from David!! 👆
My tap water has .4 ammonia which freaked me out so I went to ro water. I need advice as to how to re-mineralize and raise the 6.5 ph ro water, or should I continue to use the .4 ammonia tap water with chlorine conditioning after reading this? Had a fish store owner advise me that I should have zero ammonia going in the tank. I have a one year-old, 30 gallon tank, housing 2 goldfish.
I was made to believe that doing water changes are extremely bad for your aquarium. My parents still believe this stigma and whenever they see me at my tank they just shake they're head.😒😂😂😂
It's very difficult to change the old school mentality 🤣
Hi, i have around 35juveniles african cichlids in my 240 litres tank. I wanna know whats the best products to keep them healthy and also the best filtration setup up to keep them clear crystal water apart from the maintenance also i get alot of poop
Theres a lot that goes into those questions you asked. I have an entire course on how to successfully keep African Cichlids and a beautiful tank. Start with my Free webinar training first though - event.webinarjam.com/channel/KaveMan-Aquatics
Weekly change for my 15g community tank comprises of 12 glowlights, 4 glofish tetras, 3 Otos and 2 snails & 2 weeks for my 10g tank which comprises of 5 Sparkling Gourami, 3 Otos and 5 Amano shrimps. Irregardless of what's the result as I know I'll procrastinate and ended up not changing for weeks if the test kit says all is good. The most if I don't change is to top up water.
That like to dislike is just beautiful
Agreed, I wish is was better though 😊
Hey, do you use RODI water for your cichlid tanks? Is it needed? Thanks
Not needed, but doesnt hurt either. If you do use it make sure to remineralizer the water.
