    HI Kevin! Thanks for the great channel! It's one of the best, if not the best I've found so far! A serious question from me, how did you come to decide to use the polyfill for your canister filters, and how did you know that it was safe for your fish, since it wasn't designed for this? Did you have any concerns that any chemicals from this may be leaching into the water? I'm getting ready to do my first Fluval 407 Cannister cleaning and I'm reluctant to use the polyfill. Though I'm certain by watching your videos, that it is safe. It's just been on my mind and I'd love to hear your take on this. Thank you for your great videos, and most of all, thank you for your service to this great United States of America. All the best to you and yours! ~ MJ

    Hi! I'm new to the hobby. I have a beta fish in a 10 gallon tank. From what Im told betas need gentle flow. Wood a wave maker be too forceful for it. Also, I'm only using a sponge filter. I'm order to use the poly file, I would need to get an HOB filter too? Is that right?

  • @southsidesantino1981
    @southsidesantino1981 2 года назад

    So I'm not sure which to use on my 75 gallon south American cichlid tank. Im about to change out my 2 hob fluval 70 filters replacing with a fluval 407 canister filter and also have a 70 gallon rated sponge filter as well if this helps. Chemi pure blue, chemi pure elite or Chemi pure green? Does it matter which? I seen Chemi pure blue is perfect for African cichlid tanks but no info on if it is ok for South American tanks. Also do any of these help with the whole nitrates and nitrites situation or should I also add additional chemicals in my canister filtration for those as well separate? I know I'm asking a lot lol but your input is very appreciated thanks and by the way love your videos and they have helped and educated me a lot keep doing your thing appreciate it.

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  2 года назад

      Chemi pure blue has purigen, elite is good for removing phosphates and silicates if you have algae problems. Green I think is for planted tanks. None of them help with nitrites or nitrates. Thats the nitrogen cycle that takes care of that. If you have nitrites or high nitrates I would worry much more on that first before deciding on a chemical media. I have to agree with you once again 100% correct, but there is something that I would like to say, tell me if you agree with me or not! You know that at the bottom of the FX6 or any other canister filter, we have a house living of NITRATES, correct? That well affect the water of our tank, nobody likes to open canisters filters every week. Right? I know 2 manufacturer here in Europe that have canisters with pre filter before the water runs into the chamber where the baskets are, and it's so easy to clean making no mess. They are (OASES -German) (AQUAEL-Poland) another option would be connect a Sunsun HW603 to the FX6 or any other canister only with sponges, this way the water well get already almost clean to yr canister reducing mantainece and NITRATES factory, what is yr opinion about this? Thanks!!!

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  2 года назад +1

      Nitrates are not "in" the canister filter. Nitrates are in the entire water volume. Tank water and canister water. I know that you are referring to the trapped physical waste particles in the canister but thats where theyre supposed to go in order to decompose and eventually turn into nitrates. Yes a pre filter could help you remove the detritus before it breaks down but you'll need to do that every day to be effective. I'd much rather let the filter do its job by catching and trapping all the detritus and let it break down. Yes nitrates will rise but thats why we do water changes, among other reasons. I dont get the craze so many have for trying to reduce nitrates when water changes should be done regardless. And those water changes will remove the nitrates as well....its a win win!

A smaller volume of water can be contaminated very easily, the larger the volume (GALLONS) the harder it is to contaminate the water. Bigger tanks and equipment to run it is more money but do the best you can afford or care to spend.

      Clear water is not necessarily a guide to good water, how are you water test parameters, ie ammonia, nitrite, nitrate etc? Also it's a very good idea to have a booster filter/prefilter before your main filter with just coarse, medium and fine foams in. Your can get them in clear plastic so you can actually see inside and know how dirty or clogged they are. This will mean opening your main filter to clean FAR LESS often as it makes the water entering your main filter media so clean that the main filter just doesn't get clogged up very often. Your bacteria will love you for it! Hope this helps

      Any tips on getting my bio filter going I have been going through a nightmare with my tank for 2 months with ammonia/ nitrate spikes doing constant 50-80% water changes and I have went through bottles of ammonia neutralizer/ PH up/ quick start/ stability / prime/ and I still can’t get my tank to just level out

    • @steverabbits
      @steverabbits 2 года назад +2

      @@MrDylster69 it could be many causes but one thing I would say is stop using the ammonia neutralizer. If you kill the ammonia the bacteria will not flourish! You need to go through the nitrogen cycle (ammonia to nitrite, nitrite to nitrate etc) to get your water right, the beneficial bacteria feed on the ammonia which converts to nitrite which another lot of bacteria feed on and convert to nitrate. If you starve them of ammonia they will not flourish and the cycle will not work properly. There are many other factors which will be dependent on the size of the tank, what fish are in it, how well fed they are or not and so on. I would suggest you look on RUclips for a guy called Pond Guru and study his nitrogen cycle videos, your answer probably lies in there somewhere. Good luck!

    • @tico1283
      @tico1283 2 года назад +1

      Do you have and HOB fillter? maybe the water level in your tank is to low and when the water coming back out from the filter hits the water in the tank is what is making the loud noise, if that's the case you should raise the water level in your tank and keep it like that all the time this is going to make your tank quieter. But if the loud noise is coming from the filter itself maybe you should try a different kind of filter.

    My tank has crystal clear water although I am having another problem. My nitrates keep going up to around 20 ppm. Even after a fresh water change and gravel cleaning and filter cleaning the nitrates keep going up to 20 ppm. Yes i make sure to clean my filter stuff with tank water and i even did as much as a 75% water change but the nitrates come back. All other parameters like ammonia and nitrite are at a perfect 0 ppm according to the aquarium master test kit. Now here is the trip. I only have one fish in my 55 gallon tank. It's my boy Ted Bundy the tiger Barb all alone. And i feed him only what he can eat in 3 minutes. Rarely does any food go to waste and sink to the bottom. My tank has 2 wave makers and a marineland c360 canister filter rated for like a 100 gallon tank and a hang on the back filter that's rated for a 75 gallon tank. Both filters are loaded with bio media such as those Fluval white ring things and them black small balls that came with my canister filter. Oh and i almost forgot to mention i even have 2 box filters inside my tank that are also full of the Fluval ceramic ring things along with sponges. I don't know what else i can do now. I mean Ted Bundy looks happy AF so maybe I'm just over stressing over a constant 20 ppm nitrate result.

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  2 года назад

      20PPM is fine. Dont worry about that at all. You may have some nitrates coming in straight from your source. And remember your boy Ted is ALWAYS excreting ammonia...not only just when he poops. 3 minutes is a lot of food though...you may want to cut that back to 1! but regardless...20ppm, nothing to worry about 💪

    • @steverabbits
      @steverabbits 2 года назад

      Ditch the plastic balls, waste of time. The ceramic rings are ok but not the best option, alfagrog is better and if you can run to the cost Biohome even better although Eheim do some good ceramic media too. Bear in mind you will ALWAYS have some nitrate unless you can get a FULL nitrogen cycle going, this takes a LOT of good media and also time, maybe 4 months or more to grow the anaerobic bacteria needed to convert the nitrate into nitrogen form so it is released from the water to the atmosphere. I would recommend you search for Pond Guru on RUclips and listen to his teachings about the nitrogen cycle and proper FULL filtration, it will explain it properly to you. Hope this helps my friend

Even filled with water it's rather light but then again i am a pretty stocky dude. Only complaint i have about it is a low rattling sound it makes and the occasional burst of micro bubbles it shoots out. I'd say it shoots them out every like 40 to 60 seconds.
