DanTheGuppyMan what type of turtle do you have and how big does it get?
I have a pond that is just filled with turtles. I think that they are Texas cooters. I've counted well over 20 in a pond that is about an acre or less. Those are the ones that are at least a dinner plate in size. Do you know if it is legal to capture and resell them in Texas? Would there be a market? How would someone go about something like that? I think that most people around here just shoot them. I think that's kind of wasteful. They are under the impression that they are going to kill off all of the fish. Of course these are the same people who spray herbicide on blackberry vines. Any advice would be great.
@@rehoboth_farm the turtles usually leave the fish alone. It's VERY difficult for turtles to catch and eat fish. Cooters especially actually eat more of the vegetation and plants more so than anything else. Also, I don't think it's legal to kill, re-home or sell a native species like that. I do not think they're doing any damage, I assure you!
@@DanTheTurtleMan_ I've read several articles saying about the same thing. I'm not personally concerned about them eating my fish. I am kind of concerned about over population though. There are just so many of them.
Some smaller ones have started showing up over 200 yards away from my pond. I guess that they must be trying to spread out and find new ponds. The pond is a man made farm tank so they aren't really 'native' to that pond. I guess I should ask fish and game or something.

You can never be too careful when purchasing a turtle. I quit "buying" turtles online or sight unseen, and most of my new turtles (new video on them coming) have come from friends. Its really critical to see the plastron, limbs, eyes and every angle of the shell. NEVER buy from a dealer that wont show you the entire turtle, or tells you their one photo represents all their turtles available. If they cant show the whole turtle, they are lazy, and likely provide lazy care while they have the animals

I fully agree with you Greg, my two recent albino pink belly sideneck turtles were not the ones the retailer showed me a picture of. I love them but was looking for specifics. I made it known nicely to him and his response was that he was not obligated to sell a specific one and he would not either. I nicely told him that was fine and I would go with the one breeder here when I am looking at a new species to raise and breed. I breed different albino morph sliders for many years but I really want to expand in different species now. With that stated is why I bought all my albino pink bellies as I will be with albino map turtles this year also but I won't be buying from the one high end reseller again after he said that. With spending that type of money, you would expect to see the actual turtle being bought. I thought he was a breeder but found out, he buys in quantity only too resell at completive prices.
So can I buy a pet turtle smaller than 4” I’m so confused. I read the law and apparently nobody can buy a baby turtle as a pet. So does this mean I need to go find one that is already full grown? Just curious what everyone thinks? 🤔 I was thinking of a Reeves Turtle because it’s legal in PA. Help!

I purchased a spiny softshell from turtlesource. The shell was wrinkly (if that makes sense), but the little guy is eating good and the shell is smoothed out now after about a month. Definitely recommend expos though, this was kind of an impulse buy.

Yay! An upload!!! Couple questions Dan! How do you like the AI led on the biocube? What floating plant is that in Jelly's tub? I can't find a plant that will survive being tumbled in filter flow like that. Third, the film on the terrapin tub is likely a protein film, adding an air stone or water flow that agitates the surface will get rid of it.
Hey buddy! My roommate will answer on the AI prime (he loves it :p) The floating plant is salvinia I believe, but I often just add it from my planted tanks. Also, I'll change the flow so it agitates the surface more!
The reef tank is actually mine! (Hey, I'm Ben, Dan's roommate lol) I love it. It has been a great addition to the tank. I love to connectivity through wifi. I'm also growing acros like weeds with one one prime over my tank so I have no complaints!

@@bagalbraith23 Thanks for the reply Ben! I have a BC, but am still running an outdated Metal Halide with a Phoenix 14k bulb ( that should help date it) . I want to put something on it that is more efficient and quiet! It is in my family room and the fan on the MH ballast is getting on my nerves these days!
@@CopperCanyonTerrapins yeah that definitely does date it! I have 0 bad things to say about ai primes. And for sub $200 used with brackets, you can't go wrong! If you want a cheaper option, I've used hipagero/ aqua Knight lights before and they're also really nice and only about $60 however AI Primes are definitely the best

That film on the water is fat protein from the turtles poop all you need is surface agitation to break it up so the film can float into the filter. Eventually it will turn foamy if you don’t.

@@lanierach6280 A flowerback northern doesn't exist ...who was the breeder? Concentrics usually are $150-200

The closest i've found was actualy St*ph*n** which I was actualy going to go with until I saw your warning. I assume this is the breader that burned you before by sending wild caught hatchlings? anyway, your videos have been a major inspiration for me wantng to get a DBT but im having trouble finding places online where I can actualy purchase one. She poaches them. Plucked as eggs from the wild. Most likely uses oxytocin to induce labor in females then incubates the eggs and sells them. That's like forcing women into labor and selling their offspring...it's just awful
