I've had both a Red Ear Slider and a Painted Turtle. Both are great pets and easy to tame but make sure you have a large water tank(bigger is better)UVB Lighting for basking out from the water and a water filter for the tank and your turtle/turtles will live for years 👍

So glad you asked. Whenever I had feeding time in her separate bin, I lead her into my hands to catch her by placing pellets near my hand (which was under water in a landing pad position) so I could grab her. Once I pick her up and place her in her feeding tub, I put my hand in the water again like a landing pad with a treat like floating near my wrist for her to get. So she has to be on top of my hand to get the treat! And so she becomes familiar with my hand giving her food. Over the next few feedings I gradually increase the amount of touch I give her on her belly and paws. Sneaking in touches and normalizing being handled. It might annoy her sometimes but I give her a treat so she ends up liking it and associating my hand with lots of reward. I place food where she has to float above my hand to eat it and I touch her little paws and flippers and belly lightly. They're SO soft I love them. Then in her tank I would do the same (but less because I don't want food in her tank.) I would dunk my hand in the water and make a little landing pad for her and feed her treats close to my hand ideally with my hand underneath. Now she comes up to my hand when dunk it in@Panda_Shortzz during the training process !neverrrr! give her a pellet of food treat unless I notice she is brave in approaching me and when my hand makes contact with her. So she associates her being on my hand with treats. Hopefully this answers your question. Let me know if you have ANY other questions abt this.

My partner and I moved in together this year and we're finally settled enough for him to bring down his turtles he was holding at his mom's house.
I didn't know he had so many turtles!! 😳
Among them was a group of 8 red-eared sliders. Albinos, a carmel, a snow, and 3 triple het albino, carmel, anery. I didn't think I'd love them so much. But they're all just too adorable. We have them in a HUGE livestock water tank, where they're happy. Starting to train them to take food from my hands. Especially the albinos and snow since they can't see very well.
Box turtles are also awesome. We have 3 three-toed box turtles that we're hoping to breed, as well as the red-eared sliders.

keeping water turtles is really really a lot of work. Keeping their water clean. I had 3 water turtles. i got them from ponds as hatchlings. one RES and 2 Eaatern Painted turtles. The one painted turtle was so small it would fit down the neck of a soda bottle. Probably would not have survived in the wild. they were ok till they got around 2 -3 inches. Even with a zoo med filter i still had to syphon off crud and about 1/3 of the water in a 20 gallon every other day. maybe i was feeding them too much. You also need a UV-B lamp so the turtles can metabolize calcium. Forget about sunlight coming through a window. Most window glass has UV blocker. If you want your turtles to see in color you will need a UV-A lamp as well. you can give them all the calcium you can w/o UV it's wasted. Get a mealworm colony going in some oatmeal, feed a whole fish, internals and all. NO HAMBURGER, too rich for them. also try lettuce and greens. IMO RES are mean turtles. Painted turtles are friendly turtles. one pond i went to I saw about 10 painted turtles playing follow the leader, all the dips and dives, turns the other painted turtles did following. A quarry i swim in there was a painted turtle playing with young boys. the turtle would appear at the surface a few feet away and the boys laughing would swim towards the turtle, at the last moment the turtle would disappear only to pop up in back of them they would turn laughing and the process started all over again.

In Maryland we cannot have Spotted or Diamond back Turtles. Box turtles only one. Down by Ocean city Md on the coastal Highway they have Big Signs along the highway about watching out for diamond backs crossing the road especially during breading when the adults come out of the bay and cross the roads around Fenwick to lay their eggs in the dunes then, the hatchlings cross back across the Highway. You can become a volunteer to assist the hatchlings get to the bay. you can do a map quest of Ocean city Md, coastal highway, then do a street level view and travel up the coastal highway outside of town ( Ocean City) to see the road signs. i have some turtle videos on my channel...they are mixed in with everything else so have to search.

Red Eared Sliders (females) get too big, are really messy and dirty, can be aggressive to each other and other turtles. I agree they should be No. 5. I love the look at Diamond Back terrapins but can't get them in my country :(. Box turtles are cute, but more difficult to make a half land and half water environment for the first time turtle owner. Mud and Musk are ugly looking to me. The best turtles I have kept are Chinese Golden Thread (Stripe neck) turtles. They have very tame, gently and friendly personalities, are not aggressive with each other, don't get too big, are really easy to care for, are have nice patterns on their bodies and nice coloured shells.
