David Gormley Craigslist and tortoise rescues are a good place to look for a little bit older tortoises but there usually are not many available that way. I’ve heard Tort Stork and Tortoise Supply are pretty good. Try to get captive bred tortoises and don’t get them from Petco or Petsmart because they are wild caught
One of the big reasons that I love Clint and this channel is that he is bringing reptile keeping to the masses in a responsible manner. The frequent references to doing your research rather than just buying an animal because it's cute and the encouragement to rescue animals rather than promote an unsustainable trade in wild caught or sickly babies is why this channel deserves and needs far, far more publicity.
L Mc so true! I agree with every point you made about what makes him a great spokesman for the reptile trade. I wish more of these channels pointed out everything he does and to collect in a responsible, caring way 👍🏻
Yup, and I support both responsible captive breeding and owning licenses for exotic pets, because completely banning them at all will result in more illegal trades, poaching, and exotic pet mills as well as tons of angry people who had done their research, are responsible enough, and want to keep a pet reptile/amphibian/predatory fish/farm animal/parrot/invertebrate, but are not allowed to due to the complete ban.

My first pet was a red eared slider. My dad gave him to me when I was four years old. He lived a very happy long life. He had his own outside pool and all. He’s happy in turtle heaven now✨🍃
Sid we found a baby res in April at a local lake. It was less than a week old and was lost on a dirt path in the heat. We picked it up and put it in a container with water in the shade. All day we played at the lake and discussed if we should take it home. We decided to take it home and she is now in a 30 gallon takin with rocks she loves to move and a floating basking rock. She was so happy when we put her in her big tank and swims all over and comes to us and begs. She also plays in the down pour of the filter like it is a ride! She is so funny! I know that she/he will get to a pretty good size and live a long life, but I think my hubby is happy with that because they seem to have bonded. She begs from him as soon as she hears his voice when he gets home from work. I wasn't sure we would be able take care of her correctly but after a lot of study on my part and she is healthy and happy.
That sounds like my sister's red ear slider. She got him when someone brought him into the shelter where she worked at because he was hit when the person was mowing their grass. Luckily, he was fine. But my sister got attached to him by the time he healed enough to go back into the wild. That's how Franklin joined her family. He follows you all over in his tank, wanting attention, but then he panics and swims away if you try to pet him

Even if it was something completely duping me out of my money. Though, all the reptiles you talk about are most definitely NOT duping anyone out of their money, this is just pure love for these animals, and that is FANtastic.

Thanks for another great video, Clint and kudos for including the Diamondback Terrapin. Such a beautiful, underrated turtle. Also, for the people put off by the longevity of most turtles, rescue groups abound so consider rescuing an older adult. Senior turtles need love too 😍🐢👵🏻
i have had my sulcata my whole life and we always have found a way to make space for him, my dad and i dug up a pound on our back yard and fenced it. He was very happy there but sadly passed away last month, he was the best pet i ever had and i highly recommend them
Oh boy that makes me remember when I was a kid and we got a tortoise. Apparently there was a mix up at the pet store and boy it sure was something when that tiny "hermann's" tortoise baby with the somewhat weirdly coloured shell turned out to be a sulcata. Man I loved that animal, unfortunately we had to give them away as we couldn't accommodate the huge size as it got bigger.
Proud owner of Box Turtles. I helped in healing a turtle that had its shell opened from below and now he’s much safer. From what was once instant fear slowly grew to trusting me. Currently the little fell is walking outside just chillin around. My other one is as domestic as he could get. Very adorable and sometimes I share my bed to the little one and he just extends his neck to a makeshift pillow. Honestly Turtles and Tortoises are cute.
my parents got me a russian tortoise when i was 10- not sure how old the tortoise was lol, went to college and she went with a family friend. i'm now 32 and she's still alive! These are the best tortoises!
@@ClintsReptiles I wanted to create a new concept to support conservation efforts. The concept of a microhabitat. I’m familiar with cats, feral cats, and even small cat conservation efforts. Just the idea to you, find your information very useful. You mention people get reptiles for pets and often can’t take care of them. I suggest it to you because there’s $25 billion set aside for conservation. Microhabitat will benefit any urban area, simply based on the oxygen produced in the Mini forest.
@@ClintsReptiles you could get the grant, designing a micro habitat, to refuse adopted pets? How would you design it? This was an amazing introduction to the different types of tortoises and turtles out there, but also because you talk about responsibility in the first few minutes! I own a Russian (Morty the Tortie) and a Red-footed (Yurtle the Turtle) and respect them both so much as amazing reptiles! Russians don't need just a clear enclosure to not understand boundaries. Our Morty is in a dark enclosure and when he wants to get out for a walk, will repeatedly bang, scratch, and try to climb out. One thing I think you could have hit on with the Russian is that they need lots of exercise and/or a nice big enclosure, because in the wild they impressively walk 4 MILES A DAY (pretty impressive when you take their size into account!) Their also speed demons! My guy can run off in a flash, so you have to be careful to not lose sight of them. A big pro is their amazing personalities! Morty the Tortie reminds me of a grumpy old man who is actually lovable under their hard shell! He's very social and so smart! They're amazingly great pets, but just like you, I wish pet stores would not sell wild caught and teach buyers that they need a big enclosurer of about 6 square feet. Thanks so much for teaching responsibility in reptile ownership, something rare for channels because they are also breeding them. Also, I LOVE that you spoke about rescuing sulcatas. Amazing video! I subscribed instantly!
I just build an encloser in my garden complete with a small fountain and a small pool where they can swim, and I love watching them in the morning while having my coffee.
Im missing the Hermans Tortoise they are verry easy to raise they are verry tough. The only thing you need to do for them is a backing light and salads n greens.
Hi Clint! I just discovered your channel tonight and I immediately subscribed after the first video I watched (green iguanas. THANK YOU!) Of the many things I love about your channel, I am a huge fan of your endorsements of captive bred and rescues. I have worked with many exotic rescues and regular animal shelters over the years. Of course it is always better to bring to a rescue than releasing a reptile but the best option is a new, responsible home. There are so many rescue reptiles out there to adopt.
I rescued a Sulcata from a local pet shop. She's 10 and 70 pounds. Her previous owner had donated her to the shop because she had bought 2 hatchlings but didn't know how large they'd become. They had spent their whole lives inside as well. So I bought one of the two and she has a huge yard all to herself and a basement for night and winter 😁
I absolutely adore the fact that you recommended rescuing Sulcata tortoises if we were interested in having our own. That's a wonderful idea! One day when I'm on my own and have the space, I'd love to have one as my own! And being rescued is just a plus.
So glad you featured the stinkpot turtle, I have one myself and he is the best! Underground Reptiles is the only place I've been able to find them easily and for a decent price, would definitely recommend one of these to anyone looking for a turtle as a pet.
We haven't recommended any chameleons just yet for a reason. They are far more popular than they should be. Many do not survive because unprepared keepers buy them. But, they are amazing animals, and we will talk about them in the near future.
Clint's Reptiles I TOTALLY agree!! When I hear of first time reptile owners going out and buying a beautiful panther chameleon at some exhibit because it was pretty , I get anxiety for it's future!! I'd say chameleons are one of the more difficult reptiles to keep. Not for everyone of course but people forget that the animal's well being is on the line.
I love the sulcata tortoise, right now I don't have room for one as I am in college but one day when I am settled I would love to adopt a grown one, they are so cool.
Box turtle: Pros: Easy care, small, doesn’t need water Cons: Super shy and takes time to adjust Mud turtle: Pros: Great Adaptation, small, can be trained Cons: Bites, scratches, quite squirmy
I have a kinosternon turtle, they are really easy to feed and keep healthy with the correct filter, space and light, I recommend them. Also, I had a box turtle in the past, they are amazing, they are smart and very active, I hope to find one in the future again.
The University of Maryland athletic teams are named after the last turtle mentioned, the Diamondback Terrapin. The laws against them are because they were almost driven to extinction by harvesting from the wild, mostly Maryland, for New York restaurants' terrapin soup. That "Reptiles and Amphibians of North America" paperback was used to tatters by me when I was a lad. Until I got that I thought the musk turtles I was finding were snapping turtles. Swamps, ponds, and streams were my favorite places; the advantage of being in the first development of farmland in the suburbs. Good times.
I always thought the pyramiding of the shells was what made them aesthetically fascinating. Guess I was wrong😭 In other words, i thought the deformation of the shell due to neglect, was beautiful....
My first pet is a turtle and I always clean the tank, fill it up when the water gets low, feed it a little bit of food since you can't feed them a lot of food, I also take my turtle out and let it crawl around in my room and get exercise.
Musk turtles are really the perfect first turtle, especially big you can get a captive bred one. They just don't need a crazy huge tank like a slider. Plus there are some really cool looking ones like the razorbacks.
I really love all of your videos! It's very interesting to listen to you and watch you handling reptiles :D Would you maybe make some more videos abour turtles? ^^
I had an eastern box turtle as a kid. As a child with zero knowledge of how to take care of a turtle but she was happy and healthy. Very easy to care for. Also she was super friendly, outgoing and cuddly. She loved being held and cuddled. She didn't normally go to the bathroom unless she was in water or just got out of the water so she was a house turtle and had free roam of the house (don't worry they're native to my area so the temperature was fine for her) she even slept in bed with me and laid with me. Had her for at least 8 years but unfortunately the one forster mother I had didn't want me to have her so I was forced to give her to my gram who released her... i really don't think she would have survived after that. Plus she had zero fear of anything or any other animals so she would have been easy prey.
Clint!!!!!!!!!! This is getting weird every time you do a video I have a conversation about the same topic hours before (top 5 snakes, the expo video, and now this one (you said you were "monitoring conversations to stay relevant" and i was foolish enough to think you were joking until now :D)). my friend wants to get a pet reptile and she was thinking a turtle, and I talked her out of it because they live longer than we plan to because we are 30ish.
I never joke. We would love it if you could talk about these things earlier in the week though. It is hard to get the animals, write the scripts, film and edit all in a few hours. Obviously we love your ideas, but we could use a little more time. Thank you :)
i do have some ideas if you are interested. 1 top vegetarian reptiles (whether or not you would recommend them to beginners, whether or not they are captive bred, and if they make fun pets and not just really expensive setups that happen to have animals in them.) 2 tops warning signs to not buy reptiles from someone (how to tell if they are falsifying records, selling wild caught and claiming it something else, and how to detect "reptile puppy mills" and are they really that bad) 3 top animals in the pet market that you wish weren't for whatever reason (because i am sure with as much as you know you get sad when you see certain pets)
I grew up catching wild box turtles. My grandparents would find them working in the field and keep them for me for after school. When I got old enough I got a tortoise. Now I’m getting a water turtle (I still have my tortoise haha!) I absolutely adore all turtles/water turtles/tortoises. By far my favorite animals!
“A little bit more of a commitment,” is quite the understatement. Just a bit. A few species are going to have to be included in your will to be past dwn to the nxt of kin who’d be willing & more than able to care for it.
Well I live in Michigan and musk turtles are native here and it’s cold and I don’t use heaters for my turtles because I only keep native species like a common snapping turtle or painted turtles
Not really related to this video, but could you do a video on how to safely have little kids and reptiles live together? I've got a 2 year old daughter who loves snakes as much as I do, but before I get one as a pet, I want to make sure that my little one getting salmonella won't be a big risk. You mentioned in your Argentine tegu video that you've got a toddler, too. What kind of precautions do you have to take when she handles reptiles?
When I was about 12 I was in my moms car i a Walmart parking lot and I seen a car pull up and someone jumped out ran over and set something near the road then got back in their car and left. I was curious so I asked my mom to go over and it was a baby painted turtle. We owned a lot of pets and had a corn snake so we decided we knew enough about reptiles and rescued it. We then found another lost turtle in the city. We did research and spent all day building a giant outdoor turtle enclosure. We finished, put the turtles in their new home, went inside for 15 minutes, came out and both turtles were stolen..
Great video. Hopefully this can help people find turtles that make better pets than Red Eared Sliders. I am a vet tech and you wouldn't believe how many horribly taken care of red eared sliders I see weekly. They are not easy to care for and need so much space. Client compliance is so terrible too when you inform them of what the turtle really needs.
About a year and a half ago I bought a crested gecko and months later i bought another, just recently i rescued a yellow bellied slider i named Mary Shelley :) definitely in for a comitment
For those wondering "Why the heck is a diamondback terrapin illegal in some states?" That's due to the fact that they are on the endangered species list. Nj recently took them off the game species list (2016) and their numbers are rapidly declining due to habitat loss. If you'd like to learn more, go to www.projectterrapin.org
I received my baby musk turtle today(: he's very active, eating on the first day, climbing on his plants, and he was even interacting and climbing on me. His name is Reggie. He's tinyyyyy I love him
Clint's Reptiles you’re enthusiasm is one of the many reasons i watch these videos, it really brings up my day by seeing someone so happy about something.
Definitely African Clawed Frogs (the big ones, not the dwarfs) and Pacman Frogs maybe? No one ever talks about ACFs but mine has been amazing and easy to care for!
The big one is for me, the main reason i wanted a big one was to be a part of the family, i wouldnt really have it in a pen, it would be free range and have like an acre or two of land to chill and eat the natural grass, i jus wanna watch it chill and grow old with me
Please don't spread false information. "Russian's are easy to house and because of their size don't require a big enclosure" is utter bullshit. Any care sheet will tell you a Russian requires at least a 4x8 foot enclosure. Saying otherwise gives people the idea to use tortoise houses meant for babies or ungodly small tanks which is nothing short of abuse.
I have never seen, and cannot find, a single care sheet that calls for an enclosure that size for a Russian tortoise. Most call for one about 2 feet by 4 feet. We actually do not make care guides, but we will make a more detailed video about Russian tortoises in the near future and we would love to direct viewers to quality care guides. If you have one, or better, several, that you trust, please share them with us and we can link them to our viewers. Thank you for the feedback.
Alright that I can do. There is a lot of outdated an plain false info out there, this site has the most recent and acceptable minimum requirements and is respected in the community. I should also point out smaller enclosures are alright for babies, just not adults. tortoiseforum.org/threads/beginner-mistakes.45180/ tortoiseforum.org/threads/russian-tortoise-care-sheet.80698/#post-751936
Clint's Reptiles Your welcome. Tortoiseforum is THE place for care and questions. I liked your opinion on Sulcata’s, anyone who buys a big one knows what they are in for and are less likely to re-home it. It really is a nice piece of logic, if you want a big one, buy one. It not only avoids dangers of care during growth, but also eliminates the user who gets a baby and is floored by what they become. If they want a baby, Russian males are pretty small full grown. And the coolest thing, big abandoned sully’s would get homes.
I’ve owned multiple turtles, dragons and snakes so I have reptile experience but am looking to get a tortoise. Would you recommend a Russian over a Hermann’s? Or do you have another species that makes a good indoor/outdoor pet? I live in Florida and make outdoor enclosures for my reptiles for them to hang out in during the day in summer.

Their also speed demons!
Please tell me more. What are their temperaments like...generally speaking?
Hi Clint! I just discovered your channel tonight and I immediately subscribed after the first video I watched (green iguanas. THANK YOU!)
Of the many things I love about your channel, I am a huge fan of your endorsements of captive bred and rescues. I have worked with many exotic rescues and regular animal shelters over the years. Of course it is always better to bring to a rescue than releasing a reptile but the best option is a new, responsible home. There are so many rescue reptiles out there to adopt.
I love the sulcata so much it makes me want to cry. 😭
I absolutely love this guy. When I was younger I wanted to be a zoologist so bad and his passion for these beautiful creatures just inspires me!
🐢 Go Russian Tortoises!!!!! 🐢
Oh Clint I was thinking of getting a turtle and then I see this video. Just awesome !!! Very good vid by thr way.
Thank you! I hope it helps.
I have 2 baby box turtles, I can confirm they are adorable! Also, love your turtle enthusiasm!
You should do a top 5 of the best chameleons.
We haven't recommended any chameleons just yet for a reason. They are far more popular than they should be. Many do not survive because unprepared keepers buy them. But, they are amazing animals, and we will talk about them in the near future.
I read all of the comments. Right now I'm still a small enough "big man" that this is totally possible. You guys are the best!
They're not very good pets really. And require some very expert knowledge to properly be taken care of.
@@davidls187 - If you know what you're doing, they can be very rewarding pets, but yeah I agree they're not for beginners...
I moved to Virginia's Eastern Shore , 2022 , (I love Turtles) , I actually see Diamond Back Terrapins crossing the road.
Do u have amphibians? What about top 5 frogs or salamanders or amphibians?
Or newts 😂😂
@@davidhayyynes - She turned me into a newt... but I got better.
I’m pretty sure salamanders are illegal in a lot of places in Europe though :)
I love the sulcata tortoise, right now I don't have room for one as I am in college but one day when I am settled I would love to adopt a grown one, they are so cool.
Omg I had the same field guide for birds & some other older ones so I would just sit with the books in the backyard & watch birds
Box turtle:
Pros: Easy care, small, doesn’t need water
Cons: Super shy and takes time to adjust
Mud turtle:
Pros: Great Adaptation, small, can be trained
Cons: Bites, scratches, quite squirmy
I have a kinosternon turtle, they are really easy to feed and keep healthy with the correct filter, space and light, I recommend them. Also, I had a box turtle in the past, they are amazing, they are smart and very active, I hope to find one in the future again.
Great video! I have a Russian tortoise and love her! Thinking about rescuing a Sulcata tortoise. Don’t know where to locate one though...
Come to NJ in June. You will see a million.
This guy is so wholesome.
Good times.
I want a tortoise! I will leave all my stuff to my tortoise when i die since they'll outlive me😂😂
Phenomenal messaging per usual Clint
From small turtle to massive sulcata tortoise. That caught me so off guard 😂🤣
im choosing between a tortoise and a bearded dragon, im a kinda a beginner, already have 2 turtles.
me ❤box turtle
Me too and red ears sliders
I always thought the pyramiding of the shells was what made them aesthetically fascinating. Guess I was wrong😭 In other words, i thought the deformation of the shell due to neglect, was beautiful....
Great idea on rescuing the bigger tortoises!
My first pet is a turtle and I always clean the tank, fill it up when the water gets low, feed it a little bit of food since you can't feed them a lot of food, I also take my turtle out and let it crawl around in my room and get exercise.
Haha, you even chose your shirt to fit the Diamondback Terrapin!
Great vid as always, love your enthusiasm! :)
I love that you noticed that!
Musk turtles are really the perfect first turtle, especially big you can get a captive bred one. They just don't need a crazy huge tank like a slider. Plus there are some really cool looking ones like the razorbacks.
I prefer tortoises over turtle’s
I really love all of your videos! It's very interesting to listen to you and watch you handling reptiles :D Would you maybe make some more videos abour turtles? ^^
We will for sure :)
I don’t even know how I ended up at this video but omg your enthusiasm is absolutely amazing and I’m now a fan!!
So happy that you found us!
I’m getting a lizard soon. Videos are really helpful.
“these are the best turtles from one to five” all of the descriptions: THIS MAY BE THE BEST BET TURLTE
I will try harder thanks you are the coolest. :)
i do have some ideas if you are interested.
1 top vegetarian reptiles (whether or not you would recommend them to beginners, whether or not they are captive bred, and if they make fun pets and not just really expensive setups that happen to have animals in them.)
2 tops warning signs to not buy reptiles from someone (how to tell if they are falsifying records, selling wild caught and claiming it something else, and how to detect "reptile puppy mills" and are they really that bad)
3 top animals in the pet market that you wish weren't for whatever reason (because i am sure with as much as you know you get sad when you see certain pets)
These guys are adorable, and your enthusiasm is always appreciated!
I love how intense that Box Turtle’s eyes look
Well I live in Michigan and musk turtles are native here and it’s cold and I don’t use heaters for my turtles because I only keep native species like a common snapping turtle or painted turtles
Not really related to this video, but could you do a video on how to safely have little kids and reptiles live together? I've got a 2 year old daughter who loves snakes as much as I do, but before I get one as a pet, I want to make sure that my little one getting salmonella won't be a big risk. You mentioned in your Argentine tegu video that you've got a toddler, too. What kind of precautions do you have to take when she handles reptiles?
Boi you do know it’s very hard to get salmonella from a snake right? You’d have to lick it’s anus or it’s poop for Christ sake.
salmonella only comes from salmons, duuuuh🤓
ForestofTooMuchFood is that how you describe yourself?
MoonPie he’s talking about kids soooooo that might happen
Ranbum Guy Okay kiddos don’t go around licking snake ass. Oh wait that doesn’t happen. Just like how kids don’t lick dog ass.
I would die for my baby red foot tortious 😭😭😭 ahhh what a big personality, so sweet and curious and so interested in people. Love you Pumpkin Bread 💚
Pause at 14:39
I think he will eat him. I really want a tortoise thank for these choices
Here from the 'say it to his face' post lol. Turtles are amazing!
700+ views and only 70+ likes? Come on folks. Awesome video. I don’t think a turtle is for me but they are really cool animals.
Thank you for the support! You are awesome!
About a year and a half ago I bought a crested gecko and months later i bought another, just recently i rescued a yellow bellied slider i named Mary Shelley :) definitely in for a comitment
Clint is so enthusiastic about reptiles it makes my heart melt and be passionate about all this animals.
That box turtle was looking into my soul... 😰
its hard to pic a pet when you are enthusiastic with all of the animals you review. even bugs :p
I received my baby musk turtle today(: he's very active, eating on the first day, climbing on his plants, and he was even interacting and climbing on me. His name is Reggie. He's tinyyyyy I love him
How is Reggie?
i got a diamond back terrapin of my own i love him :)
I have a yellows belly
I myself have two Malayan box turtles, a red-eared slider, and a musk turtle. My musk turtle's name is Bowser.
The second turtle is a mud turtle not a musk turtle. Also stink-pots are musk turtles but I love this guy these videos are awesome!
I love these videos.
I baught a turtle she look weird,. And she bite really hard, she nearly took my finger off
He looks like a skinnier version of ned from buzzfeed
The Diamondback Terrapin is absolutely a Pokémon
top 5 frogs next I know they're amphibians but still awesome
We probably will get into them in the future. I would love more opinions on this one. What do you all think?
Clint's Reptiles I really liked it the russian tortoise and the f
diamondback terrapians were awesome I just ain't got the room for them right now 😌
Clint's Reptiles you’re enthusiasm is one of the many reasons i watch these videos, it really brings up my day by seeing someone so happy about something.
Definitely African Clawed Frogs (the big ones, not the dwarfs) and Pacman Frogs maybe? No one ever talks about ACFs but mine has been amazing and easy to care for!
Clint's Reptiles Make sure you talk about how much noise they make croaking and whether it may bother you or not
Mud turtles are pretty cool, I catch them pretty frequently in the lake I live next to, and they'd be cool if they weren't aggressive and wild
i have one, yea theyre a big aggressive LOL i also make videos on turtles if you are interested! :)
Dude you get me so excited i love you
Btw can you make one about scorpions and frogs?

Thank you very much :)
