If you're thinking "THAT IS A TORTOISE, NOT A TURTLE", we have a video for you to watch: ruclips.net/video/nKr6uTNI23A/видео.html
Tortoises are a unique group of turtles, this is true, but that group falls right in the middle of the turtle group. Saying "that is a tortoise, not a turtle" is like saying "that is a tortoise, not a reptile", or "that is a tortoise, not an animal". I hope that helps :)

You're exaggerating your point there, it is in no way like saying "it's not a reptile or animal". I actually liked some of your videos before this comment and video. You're not going to call a Sulcata Tortoise a Sulcata Turtle now, are you? I'll stick to Kamp Kenan and Brian Barcyzk.

And while that is horrible, it took a long time to get tortoises back to Europe from the New World (the story is probably not about a Sulcatta as France owned a lot of their habitat in Africa), apparently because tortoise is delicious and the ship crews would eat them before they got back.

I built an underground( sort of) Easy to grow the veggies they eat( here in the winter) About 7 years ago, I went to help out seniors ( more senior than myself) I went up to roof to cut back branches of a tree. The owners of the house said their goodbyes. I was to leave myself out when done. Well," Johnny" liked to be spoken to. I did not spend time saying my hellos to him that day. He knocked my ladder down!!!! while I was on the roof, looked up at me and stood there while i spoke to him. :):) My two rescues are so sweet. They do seem to appreciate interaction:) One lf my gals is badly shaped BUT she is a doll. Can I ad,in my area( desert Az. I have actually helped folks hunt for escaped suls! It is surprising how fast they can move. Clint, you didnt have to do cardio that day,did you:)? He gave you a workout:) as always great video.

I had one of these guys when I was growing up, and he was the most cantankerous, stubborn jerk on the planet. This tortoise would rise up real high on his legs and launch himself at your shins if you got anywhere near him, and sometimes even when you weren't. I can't count the times I was out doing yard work, only to have over a hundred pounds of tortoise come slamming into my legs. I loved the big idiot, but my god, was he a grump.

My Sulcata is about half that size so far, and I love my tortoise! He goes outside everyday for about 8-10 hours, he bangs up against the back door when he's ready to come inside for the day... Inside my house, he has full run of the entire downstairs, but he ususlly never goes anywhere except to bed... He used to sleep in one of my daughters dollhouses (his choosing), but he outgrew that and decided to start sleeping in a big toy food truck where he feels hidden... It's pretty rare for him to poop or pee while inside the house, he knows the routine... He's really a lot like a dog that doesn't require a lot of attention, so long as the food and temperature requirements are met.

@Megan Fisher After opening up the shell to get tge eggs out it gets put back together with thus special epoxy type stuff, but healing takes a very long time After that. I literally build a huge pen for him, full of mulch and warm lights ( including UV ) and he eats TONS of lettuce and veggies every day, while he watches the snow through the sliding glass doors. We have a sulcata tortoise, a rescue. It's previous owners for some reason thought it was okay to have him in a enclosure where he couldn't turn around. So, both his growth was stunted and rear legs are weak, even years later. He can move without wheels now but he's still not 100% and probably never will be.
So, with that really sad load of story out of the way, he now has free reign over our back yard, his own house to enjoy complete with heating pad. Basically eats all day, every day and is a good boy. Too hot, climbs into one of our bushes that he's really worked into comfy spots, too cold, right home onto the heating pad, winter, we got an enclosure inside.
I have a few vids of him on my channel. He's made himself quite comfortable.
I've been trying to get him familiar with me by handling him, staying around him a bunch. He's been really good.
He's a good boy and as you said, eats, all, day. Constantly chowing down on the lawn, gets a head of lettuce and that's gone rather quickly. He's friendly, seems to enjoy our company.
Thank you for showing off your tort. He's so good

We rescued ours in Colorado when I was in kindergarten. She’s 90 pounds some 15 years later, if I had to describe her in one word I’d say “bulldozer”

My 6th grade teacher had a massive African Spurred tortoise named Tank as a class pet and she would bring him to school every day (she also brought her cat named Taz, who was the official hall monitor). Unfortunately, her neighbor who let Tank graze his lawn, forgot to tell her he'd sprayed the grass one day which ended very tragically Tank. The bright side was her local pet store had just gotten a much younger tortoise of the same species (Tank had been pretty much full grown, this one was about 12") surrendered to them. He'd been living in a dark closet for his whole life, his shell was bumped up like crazy. So she brought him in to class and we all got to participate in caring for him and watching him slowly heal and rehabilitate him. We named him Mini-Tank. He's a big reason I want a tortoise some day if I ever have the space.

So they are pretty much gigantic Chaco tortoises, and considering how stubborn and destructive they can be despite being tablet-sized (my male Chaco got through a bar door that was supposedly too narrow for him to get past [he got through sideways] and knocked over my mother's Christmas tree), I can't imagine what Sulcatas can do.

Hmm... would it be possible/reasonable to house this tortoise outdoors, assuming your local climate is compatible? Like, if you live in Texas or some other hot dry state, wouldn't an outdoor 'tortoise house' be a workable solution instead of a dedicated indoor location?
It seems like a good idea to me, considering they're a large, armored reptilian grazer, so leaving them outside primarily is both relatively safe and cost saving. About the only problems I can think of is escape attempts, which, sure, probably could do that, but that's a problem for an indoor reptile too, and... it's a tortoise. He ain't going anywhere fast, so even if he does escape, as long as he doesn't get hit by a car, you'll probably be able to find and rescue him swiftly. It's not like there's many local predators that can actually hurt him, because African tortoise against American predators is like bringing a tank to a snowball fight, especially one as big as this.

This is honestly the first reptile I've seen on your channel I've seriously considered, I live in Zone 10 and have some outbuildings (one of which used to be a chicken house) that would be ideal to fence off around, and it has a doorway that would allow access to the interior during periods where it's too hot or the rare too-cold

I personally don’t see an issue with providing care information for, or recommending babies morally wrong, so long as you are including how big they will grow. For me, I want a big tortoise, but I want to get it young so I can bond with it as it grows, and so that I can enjoy it from all stages of its life. Is there something I’m missing?
