Great video. Thank you for all your information. I look forward to your videos. I am A 74 year grandmother who really loves learning about all your reptiles.
I love that you mentioned how they live and eat in the wild, because most don't talk about that. How they live in the wild has to be key to pyramiding prevention.
Thank you so much for making this video. I’ve been doing lots of research on sulcatas and this has been the realest most useful video I have come across
I have two Sulcata's! Also! Make sure you supplement their food with adding Calcium powder, sprinkled on the food 3-4 times a week! This definitely helps prevent pyramiding!
🐢🐢thank you!! I have a Sulcata, one question I don’t regularly soak once a week, he drinks water though, and he lives out side, he has slight pyramid it’s been a journey with the research of my rescue.. to this tortoise 🐢, so many people give different advice on on what to feed what they should eat, and I am with you because I have a 50 pound healthy tortoise kind of common sense. If you do the research on where they live can you know what to feed them
good that i found your channel. I have had 2 sulcatas that are about 5 months old for 2 weeks. I feed daily mulberry leaves, hibiscus, water spinach and rarely salad from the supermarket. they get crushed eggshell and sepia sprinkled over their food twice a week. they always have hay and alfalfa in their outdoor enclosure on the terrace. during the day when the sun is shining i put them in the garden area, they get a bath beforehand. here in thailand the temperatures are always 32 degrees celsius = 90 Fh on average with high humidity.
Love seeing your cute face in the videos. It adds more personality to the channel. I love the cool shirts and hats you have. Big fan keep up the good work big xoxo
Great video! I have an almost four year old Leopard Tortoise, so pretty much the same care as a Sulcata. It's sad that a lot of people get these guys and end up not knowing how to care for them, so then they end up with lots of pyramiding. I'm sure your video educated a lot of new tortoise owners!! 🐢 😊
There are 2 factors related , if the tort grow fast ,so the humidity comes play very important role ,iknow so many sulcata keepers that grow so fast super fast but still flat smooth shell
Info I didn’t know. Thank you. I love watching your videos. I actually learn all sorts of stuff. So just in case I find a sulcata tortoise roaming around in my yard, I now know what to feed it. Your videos are very informative. Thank you. ❤️
found my tortoise in the desert..native friends found it in their garage ..they cant touch them..ive had it 2 months .it loves napales (cactus paddles) and prickly pear.. The shell was already pyramidal ..not drastically. seems to love the paddle cactus and pears, especially.. anyone raising them in Arizona that survived this brutal summer, they LOVE prickly pears and it's burrow cover, a 3 wire bale of bermuda..
Thanks for the video, gave me a way better understanding about the sulcata tortoise. We were gifted one without notice, and had no clue on how to maintain one lol
Hey, I just found your page and thought it was very interesting. I have a sulcata that is almost 1 year old, but I never knew how to change his diet. Right now, his diet consists only of romaine lettuce, and I was wondering if I can mix the lettuce with hay or if it needs to be one or the other.
Thank you for that information I have been feeding my poor so kind of turtles around my. He has an outdoor. With a element . He's still cold in the morning. Would it be a good idea to get one of those heating mates? I will also get some of that tortoise Chow
Great video. Thank you for this and so great to see you! Reingesting excrement is also a common behavior in rabbits. They will often eat their first soft droppings of the day. It sounds as though a more bland diet comprised chiefly of hay is ideal. Can those items you showed at the beginning (dark leafy greens, fruits, and vegetables) be fed at all, and if they can, is there a benefit to feeding them in a dehydrated state? As I think about it, the water content is the biggest difference between a tortoise living outside primarily eating grass and one living indoors mainly ingesting hay.
I’m sure in America / Canada you have lots of options for tortoise pellets, but in the uk we have a limited supply so please read the content carefully as they can have a lot of protein in them. This is ok for forest tortoises like redfoots and cherry heads but not grassland or desert tortoises. That’s not to say they can’t eat it just not every day.
My sulcata tortoise won’t eat pellets, or the hay , I’ve been trying to feed it that , so he gets the nutrients it needs, what can i do to help him eat better, i give him bell peppers, romaine lettuce, etc..
My guess for food: -dark leafy greens (cruciferous) -melon Post video edit: HAY!? Wow! 😮 I don’t have any tortoises, but would like one in the future. This is so cool to know! Thanks for the good info as always!
Beautiful tortoise!!! I got a baby sulcata and it won't eat grass or hay or the pellets. It will only eat spring mix. It even won't eat collard greens. Pet store said just leave collard greens until he eats it. What do u think???
How do you convince a two week old tortoise to eat hay. My tortoise is pyramiding and require assistance. I cut down the hay, since I thought it was too big. I was thinking of mixxing it with the mizuri tortoise pellets but I rather it just eat hay naturally. I put hay on top of the lettuce or veggies and she just goes around it. Even pushing it off of large veggies or stems.
When I had pet rabbits, timothy hay was recommended for them. Rabbits shouldn't eat just lettuce and carrots - it'll make them sick They also recommended giving rabbits wooden toys to chew on, so their teeth would grind down. I had one rabbit whose teeth got so long he couldn't eat or drink normally. I had to cut his teeth back with a pair of wire cutters. (And rabbits eat their poop to recycle the B vitamins produced by their intestinal bacteria.)
The folks at Snake Discovery have a *HUGE* sulcata tortoise that roams freely around the facility. I would think that a sulcata tortoise would thrive on a diet of vegetables and fruits

I have tried to provide hay for my Sulcata but he will not eat it. He will only eat the tortoise pellets. I put him outside frequently to graze on grass, but he seems to go for the plants that are not grass. Any ideas to get him to eat hay?
I have a question. My bearded dragon turns 2 years old on Sep 22 and I’m planing on pairing her with a male, but September is the last month of the year they mate before they brumate, should I wait to pair them until after brumation or can I do it whenever?
I assume it loses some but retains enough to still be worth eating. Hay is very tough stuff, so it'll take a couple passes to get it all I imagine. That's on of the reasons cows have multiple stomachs and chew their cud, grass and hay take a lot of effort to fully digest.

So they digest similar to a ruminant, in that they digest the same feed 2 or 3 times, ruminants just do it internally

Can they eat clover all day? My lawn is mainly clover and he’s out there munching on it all day.
variety with vitamins and calcium I add Timmothy hay too. But I'm talking about my Russian torts. I just added a sulcata to the family.

How do you get a baby tortoise to eat hay if they’ve been fed lettuce and flowers?
So cute!!! Precious!!!
I live in Arkansas and would like to own one. Would humidity be bad for them? We do have some week's in the summer that can be high in Humidity.

Have you figured it out? I have a hatchling who isn’t interested in anything other than Romain
Me too. I have 2 hatchlings. Although I have found if you cut up the Timothy hay and mix it with Romain and collards they tend to eventually eat it

If pyramiding has already occured, will it eventually go away with proper diet and enough time, or is it permanent?
