My father bought a champ in 1986 and drove it for 30 years and on my 18th birthday my dad gave his champs keys to me and said there you go and I still drive his champ still. Amazing bakkie, cheap to maintain, cheap to drive and never let you down.
If emission laws did not become a problem then people would probably still buy the 1400 champ😂

Lekker man! Do we even have emissions laws in SA? Surely, classic cars are exempt.

    • @HannoImmelman
      @HannoImmelman 2 месяца назад

@MarkoVukovic0 It's pressure from the EU. But classic cars do get exempt. You just can't produce new cars that does not follow the new emission standards.

Nice job on the little bakkie. I owned a network installation business at on stage and it came with a bunch of them. Despite my misgivings they turned out to be absolute winners and I ended up keeping one of the older ones at home as a runabout. It had more than 400k km on the clock and was utterly reliable. It could also drift around a wet traffic circle without asking.

Nissan (or Datsun) like everyone else were obligated to manufacture their products in South Africa under the local content program which meant that a large percentage of the components needed to be sourced from within the country's borders.
When a regime change occurred in 1994 new trade agreements were signed into effect, this meant that tens of thousands of jobs were lost.
Not only the automobile sector was impacted, clothing, footwear and many other industries suffered.
All Suzuki cars are imported, all Chinese vehicles are imports.
Prior to 1994 duties on imported vehicles doubled their cost (and import permits) were required on an individual case basis.

Stunning video, man! I fully agree that these little humble vehicles became so popular, because of their integrity. It is what it is and no showiness or pretension with them. They were cheap to buy, RELIABLE and economical to run. Best of all was that you could still buy replacement parts (including chassis sections) brand new from the dealerships at a fraction of the price of similar parts from other brands. Keep up the great work!

Your videos are excellent. Well done. You need to try to find the local magazines from the past to get the local flavour and jargon right. This is very difficult to glean from the internet. We never had the Sunny name in SA. They did in Zim though. Here cars were generally called by their alpha/numerical codes, until we got the Laurel, Stanza, skyline, Pulsar etc. A standout Datsun to us would be SSS (510). I hated those Datsuns in the 70's, they rusted so badly in the Cape. They definitely were bullet proof though. I would love to have one now though. So pure, so elegant.
    Thanks for your excellent work.

Just as a side note, the NP 200, Fiat Strada an OpelCorsa were all built on the Corsa platform. Opel had a controlling stake in Nissan and Fiat at the time and standardised the platforms.
I had written quite a few of those 1400 bakkie off myself. Unfortunately the last few years of production the poor build quality came through strongly. Leaking windscreens and piss poor door fitment, blamed on worn out tooling.
I did enjoy them none the less.
The largest drawback was the seat in it, your back couldn't do more than 150 km at a time.

Yep. Have to agree with everything said. Albeit it a crunch to drive if you are tall, you have to unfold yourself from behind the steering wheel when you wiggle your way out. Owned a Champ since the mid nineties, have had rust removed and resprayed and is still looking good to this day. They have attempted to steal it three times, but the Champ likes his home and the thieves could not get it to leave with them. It has worked and traveled all over Southern Africa, carried so much, to so many places. Every year I think it is time to replace it, and I pretend to myself that I am in the market for a new "bakkie", only to spend a little more on keeping the Champ in the best nick possible. Bought cash, it has now more than quadrupled in value, and everywhere I drive with the Champ, everyone stops to make me an offer to buy it. I would recommend to any parent out their wanting to buy their youngsters their first vehicle to look at the Champ (even if you can only get them second hand) you can't go wrong. It is a good car to have regardless of what they choose to do, great vehicle to go to university of college with, as it can take friends to the beach or camping, if you going to start a business this is the utility vehicle for any entrepreneur starting out.

Had a 1975. 1200 cc. Datsun and could enlarge the cab by fitting a back panel and roof from a 2000 model champ.
Later sold the 1200 and bought a 1400 champ. With some easy upgrades of the exhaust , electric fan and tyres ECT got a fuel consumption of 15 km/I. This was back in the day when fuel cost R5 per liter. Still think about those time when it was simple and easy to do maintenance and mod a car. Had to learn how to tune the carb by ear and closing the air screw and backing out 2 1/2 turn and the fine tune till engine runs smooth. Had to do valve stem seals on the 1200 when we bought it off an auction and decided to overhaul the engine. Big ends , mains the whole lot cost R1000 and a Saturday morning, between me and my dad. To my shame I still went out the Friday and only clocked in at 10am on the Saturday, finding him with a stripped block busy cleaning and honing the sleeves. Boy what fond memories. Don't you want to look into the mods that was done to the stock engine. As subscribers we could probably share info and images. Had a buddy with a stock engine. Had a cam, exhaust branch, drop kit( made by me as a apprentice fitter&Turner)😅. 2nd stage cam , double valve springs, and 4 Su side drafts found on the 1600 SSS Datsun. He Got 11km/l at 120km. And could do 180 GPS speed. Also regularly did quarter miles against classic muscle v8's. He stayed head to head with them except on hills, did have the torque.

Great vid. I loved this bakkie. But if you were 6 foot or taller, there wasn't much room behind the wheel.

I bought my Datsun 1400 bakkie brand new in 1985. It was fantastic. I would service it myself as it was just too easy to do! The only downfall was that it just rusted away. I drove it for years until it basically rusted away.
