Big thanks to Perana.org and the Perana Facebook group for archiving and maintaining this story. *one correction: @8:50 , this an Escort, not a Cortina as stated. Basil Green's Perana's revolutionised how South African's think about Ford in a way reminiscent of the stunning work of Carroll Shelby. Over his career, he reimagined the Cortina, Escort, Capri, Grenada and Sapphire from family sedans...

*Just a correction: the Mk5 Cortina didn't come with leaf springs as I said in the video but the multi-link rear suspension was revised for the XR6 Interceptor to handle the new power, as described. Ford has create some pretty special cars but for me the Cortina XR6 and Sierra XR8 stand out for how they managed to merge the American and European Ford philosophies in to a pair of truly special v...

Since F1 engines have nothing in common with regular cars - it doesn't make any sense.
Yoh i love this vid thx
Will never happen
The big concern is the ANC seeing F1 in RSA as an opportunity to implement their notorious tenders and steal, kind of like what happened in 2010 with the fifa world cup.
🏁
LSM was originally more than willing to fianace the track the problem is your precious government snd the dreadful FIA not being serious. All I'm going to say is thank not only LSM but it's customers aswell. So to the people who think we are snobs were also motorist.
Retrospectively, the Rand was 100% correct to tank with the ANC takeover
the economy has been doing much better since the troubles of the late 80s and 90, exchange rate doesn't tell the full story, many countries have a much weaker currency compared to the rand but much stronger economies.
I love how I learn about the history of whatever product you showing us, much appreciated 🙌🏾🙌🏾
This was so informative, the history covered here was brief, but precise. Great video. Cannot wait to see if we actually end up hosting in 2027.
ruclips.net/video/sq6jLmQhdA4/видео.htmlsi=tes-AQbS-YIKquhL Ek en my vrou in 2008 op Kyalami met ons Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 Selespeed!!!
My concern with F1 coming to SA besides the fact that it will be stupid expensive for south africans to attend, is the direction the track will take after that. Will companies like Wesbank for festival of motoring or BMW , and other concert makers like dstv still be able to "afford" a grade 1 international track afterwards because these are the events that ordinary south africans can go to and experience the track
I attended that very 1st GP in 1967 at all of 3 years old. My Dad became a volunteer time keeper for Ferrari for both the GP's & the 9 hours, so my early years were spent in the pipits with him at all of those events, until 1977. I was in utero on the 21st of December 1962, when he & my mother arrived at Westmead in Durban, for practice of the final GP of the season, to discover that Gary Hocking had just been killed. I was at Kyalami in 74 when Peter Revson was killed in practice & in 77 when Tom Pryce was killed right in front of me during the race. In those days, all the drivers & crew stayed at the Kyalami Ranch Motel & we would always go there after the race, where the drivers were easily accessible, not like today. Thankfully I have vivid memories of those days & the cars & drivers that I saw, for which I still have an interest 57 years later.
Seriously guy ... the LAST thing South Africa needs is a F1 GP. Firstly, the last time it happened, hundreds of millions of taxpayer money was stolen and wasted because of BS lies about it's benefit to the country. And the person who ended up with most of that money never saw a day in jail ... instead he just moved on to promoting another sport where he could use government connections to line his pockets ... golf, although he did pop back into motorsport to pull the same stunt with World Superbike racing, who also cancelled long before the end of the contract and washed their hands of South Africa. Secondly, NO ONE in F1 wants a F1 GP here, no matter what they say. What they want is HUGE race fees and / or leverage to use to force other circuits to pay even higher fees to retain their races for fear of losing them to South Africa - exactly what happened last year when suddenly FOM people were flying to SA for meetings about an imminent race. (all while in the middle of intense negotiations with Circuit Spa about their renewal. Spa fell for the ruse, paid big money, and suddenly the SA GP was off. Thirdly ... those fees. There is zero chance that the hosting fee will be less than $50million. In fact, I'll guarantee it'll be as near as bang on $60 million, given what the recent contracts have been. So put that into Rands. R1.08 Billion!!!! Just for the hosting fee. For a 4 day event. And 90%+ of that money leaves South Africa for the now US owners of F1 who share some of t with the teams. Then there are circuit modifications at R180 million that need to be recovered from the promoter, over and above the circuit rental. The promoter then needs to setup the circuit for the race with additional portable stands, ablutions, security, parking & access, media facilities, etc. So all in the promoter will need to spend somewhere north of R5.5 billion over a 5 year race contract. And remember that the contract requires the FOM be given a BLANK circuit, because they have already sold all the advertising on it, of which not a cent goes to the local promoter. The only spare space is for an event title sponsor, which they will sometimes bring to the party, but take and even bigger chunk of that than any promoter might. Fourth. Do the maths. Even if they find a way to accommodate 100k people at the circuit, and convince everyone to buy a 3 day pass ... that's 5.5 billion divided by 500k = R11000 per person. Even if they weight the tickets with Gold, Silver, Bronze packages, AND they get an international title sponsor, the Bronze ticket will cost no less than R5000, with a Silver in the region of R8000, and Gold about R12000, and VIP tickets in the R25K bracket. If you think I'm talking BS, just look at the prices of more recently added races, like Miami (who will be on a similar hosting fee). Miami general access tickets are $1000, or R18k. Fifth, and probably the BIGGEST reason we do not WANT a F1 race here, are the Gold and VIP prices mentioned above. South Africa is a small automotive market relative to other places. But, local manufacturers / branches / agencies for international brands, all have local marketing budgets, and most have some sort of motorsport budgets. Often those aren't huge, but they do allow Champion or NGK plugs, Ferodo brakes, Castrol lubricants, Bridgestone tyres etc to support a fairly large number of local competitors by supplying product in turn for some advertising on their vehicles. Now we get an F1 race ... the CEO's decide that money is better spent inviting VIP guests (most of whom have never been to a local race or even know what F1 is) to the F1 weekend at R25k per person. That's the entire motorsport and most of the marketing budget blown, so now local competitors have to buy all their product, which eliminated many of them. Culled for a 4 day F1 race that brings ZERO new race fans to local motorsport. And finally there is the event If you and your mate paid your R10k for two of the cheap seats, you will sit on a metal bench seat in hot sun / afternoon rain, you will stand in queues for toilets and food and drink - where you can expect to probably pay R30+ for a can of Coke and R120 for a boerie roll. You will need to rely on park and rides, probably costing you another R200+. Now, do you really think there are 100K people in South Africa who can and will pay between R6k & R14k per person to watch a race that's on TV live anyway, or costs a few dollars to watch live on F1TV?
Where do you get this SUFFER Bafana Shirt? A little retro design.
Loving this channel man. These are stories really worth knowing. Can't wait for the episode on Jody Sheckter
just a note, "East London Grand Central Circuit" does not exist. You combined the 2 names. East London GP circuit is in the eastern cape and Grand Central was in the general region of Kyalami (a bit to the east near the airport) www.google.com/maps/search/grand+central/@-25.9854225,28.1341639,574m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MTExOS4yIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D yes, that little bit of road in the middle of the field that you can barely see is what remains of the circuit. BTW are you coming to the 9 hour?
great video man
f1 at kyalami is magic, I remember in 93 how they managed to sell a R2 tin for coke for R18! Hotdogs were R25. because of all the international money, the whole thing was almost totally inaccessible to local money. Bring back the delivery bike 2hr races!
100% Spoken like a man with actual experience of what it means to have an F1 race. No doubt you also sat in the sun / rain on open stands and could see no more than a few hundred meters of the circuit. Sadly local motorsport is in a shocking state.
@@LittleBigMediaCo yes...just to clarify, I dont doubt it'll be a "good thing" for the country to get our name in lights again. I'm not a doomonger, just a realist that knows and sees capitalism's ugly side too often
@@wernervanniekerk7579 I was knee deep in it the last time F1 came to Kyalami, involved in Group N racing ... so was excited to have F1 back, having been to every GP / 9Hr / Sportscar / GrandPrix bikes / etc at the old circuit since the mid 70's. Turned out we couldn't even get preferential tickets so had to buy just like Joe Public. Then we got messages from supplier after supplier that they would no longer be able to support Group N privateers with brakes, plugs, fuel and lubricants, safetywear, etc because they would be spending their motorsport budget entertaining VIP's at the GP instead. So eventually on race weekend, we parked and walked miles, before luckily having someone we knew from AMG stop in a VIP shuttle and run us in to our stand. the VIP' in the shuttle with us had never even been to Kyalami before. Didn't know what f1 was. But they were (literally) eating up our Group N racing budget. And then as you say, ridiculous prices for everything, queues for portable toilets (which no one could use by Sunday because they were overflowing down the road we would have to walk on when leaving. Complete mess. Since 93, I've been to a bunch of F1 events around European circuits. Far better way to watch the racing live.
This channel has got the wrong name, its definitely not a skedonk its next level ❤
Nah we all love our Skadonks 😄
don't forget about the promo vid that red bull did on kaylami with i think their 2018 f1 car whether that means it can withstand f1 cars yet or if that is just apart of the fia 2 (historic cars) or just a once possibility idk but it worth looking at. i think McKenzie is dedicated to doing big flashy sports events for people to notice him so f1 would be his prized jewel imagine how is campaigning would be for him in the next election saying that he brought f1 to sa so on the political side i think we covered.
1st class circuit, but too many corruption, politics, so will not happen in my lifetime
Well researched
Amazing video and We appreciate the research.
Thanks so much 😊
This year is a lot different. There is actual investment and Government support
No there is NOT. Gayton only opens his mouth to make empty promises that he can never deliver on. Like when he was going to make all rugby tests free for everyone on SABC, or PSL matches ... or when he was going to pay back the parents of Olympic medal winners to funded their journey to success. And he never delivers on his groot bek promises. Also, nobody in South Africa has a R5 billion bond to put down as a promoter for the race contract. And government will never get away with that without riots in the streets for wasting taxpayer money.
That's what I heard plus they are trying to impress for votes so they kinda have to
The hosting fee is still the stickler no one has come forward to put that down yet
@@chrismusonza5387 And is unlikely to because of the eye watering amount & unstable Rand.
Once again, thank you for the professional presentation. The research hours paid off. I have seen many international videos on this topic but they somehow did not reach your levels of in-depth knowledge. Keep up the good work
Ag, Thank you 🙏
Finances aside, my question has always beeen, Can you call yourself a World Championship if you dont compete all over the world? Missing out on an entire continent is criminal
The logical answer is no, you cannot.
Or call yourself the ultimate racing class when you've got more rules and limitations than Singaporean prison. The true essence of formula 1 died a long time ago :(
Antarctic F1 when?
Considering they've run for 30yrs+ since their last visit, & no one except South Africans has even noticed, or questioned the validity of any of the championships, the answer is a definite "yes".
No, but it won’t be in SA, probably Rwanda.
I remember as a child I was at Kyalami often, I remember my first ever bee sting was on my lip here. Little bugger hid in a coke can. And I remember a guy in his racing leathers with his helmet still on waved at me from the pits while there was bike racing happening. I also remember seeing an old Williams in the pits one day. There's tons of memories I have as a boy at Kyalami. I would absolutely love to see it re-invigourated.
Yep!
My first car was a Champ, it eventually got totaled in a accident and I'm still sad about it. Brilliant vehicle.
Pretty sure that the pretty bank of carbs caught fire given the circumstances 😂
BOET!!!!
Fascinating vid thanks dude. What a special car in our history. Had no clue about its pedigree!
As an ITalian and An Alfista the saloons/sedans always drove better than the GT/GTVs on road from the longer wheelbase. The Alfetta platform launched in May 1972 not 1974. Also Giugiaro wished "nothing" to do with the Alfetta GT design since Alfa Romeo engineers had redone the front windscreen angle following a windtunnel test and changed his design substantially. Also despit ethe v6 being an excellent and reliable engine, the Bialbero twin cam was a much better engine in the Alfetta than the v6 due to its weight being centralised and it heads lower down, and the twin spark racing version in the Giulia GTAM produced 147Kw (220hp) in 1971, more than the SA 3.0 v6. The GTAM engine was subsequently put into the Autovama Alfetta race cars in ITaly who were very competitive but Alfa Romeo failed to support GT racing in that period to the degree it did with the Giulia. The road GTV6 road car gives a lovely engine sound and excellent handling but the GTV handles better with the four cylinder engine on the road.
I do believe that they were disqualified in their first outing. The 3.0 was kept secret and blitzed the opposition. Problem was they weren't homologated yet. BMW protested and it was upheld but the damage had been done. We all saw them win, and it was the following week when the results were over-turned.
Keep it up bro could we hear about the burnout scene out there. Please or the 25 South African f1 drivers please
So guys somehow Optimal Energy Joule and Brandt BRV happen not to be the only dream 🇿🇦RSA Cars but as well as the Mazibuko Motors and SSS Car's 🤷So ummm🤔.... yep🔥
Nissan 1tonner 3.0 v6 is the best sounding v6
We got the GTV6 3.0 here in the USA too......
I believe the regular 3.0 and the homologation versions are quite different
Hot Wheels gave us one of these.
Oh boy I was in high school. The must have was a GTV 3 L but Alfas were not known for reliance, or value for money, or keeping resale. More of the engine, road drive experience!?
Cool vid, a tad long but loved it. And we had a BM333 that was SA only as well?
What are you, Irish as well fella?. Hard to make out the accent, as it does not sound full on South African?. Irish, haha, please don't say Irish, right little munchkins though Irish.
Cool. Can you do a video on Ben Morgenrood too?
You forgot to mention the Capri Perana V8, also by Basil Green
There was a 3.5L too
Very well done video. It’s unusual to encounter a South African vlogger. I toyed with buying the Sprint during Alfa’s 75 th Anniversary year, which they made a great thing of. I was shocked when they pulled out of SA shortly thereafter, and relieved I had delayed buying a new car.
Do you want to talk with me?
❤
Fantastic rustbucket !
BMW M535i, Opel Kadett Super Boss, Toyota TRD; Ford Sierra XR8, Alfa Romeo GTV 6 3.0, Merc 350SL....these were every boys dream cars in SA in the 80s
