Just a quick clarification: I recently went to the James Hall Museum and found out that they not only have one of the prototypes but they also have the 2008 concept car that went to Paris. Incredibly cool. Speaking to the people that work there, they say that there were 10 prototypes created instead of the 4 that they Daily Maverick article claims. I'd probably trust the museum more than the article but regardless, if you're in JHB you can go and see two different versions of this incredible car.
So guys somehow Optimal Energy Joule and Brandt BRV happen not to be the only dream 🇿🇦RSA Cars but as well as the Mazibuko Motors and SSS Car's 🤷So ummm🤔.... yep🔥
Considering that the SA is probably the only country in the world in 2024 that has import tariffs for EV's, that fact that they offered Optimal Energy no support is not a surprise.
Did you watch the video? The government & investors offered their support but the company got too ambitious. Also, MASS MANUFACTURING IS REALLY, REALLY, REALLY DIFFICULT.
@@abpdev small change for a government budget. NHI would cost way more than the capital needed to jump start a car manufacturing operation. This isn't a case of finance; this is a case of the government not wanting to. Simple as that.
I remember this car. Read that the funding was cut and Optimal Energy made a push to develop electrified city busses for public transport. I thought that was a brilliant idea, shame it never happened.
So speaking of Car brands I have heard of a small bakkie manufacturer called Brand BVR. But there is like little info on it. Have you heard of them? Have you an opinion on them?
I followed the Joule project from early on and it was indeed exemplary! I was really excited about the prospect of showing the world what we are capable of and seeing the car go into production and becoming a success. It was heartbreaking following the news and seeing the demise of the dream. Really sad to hear that those 3 prototypes were destroyed too, what an anticlimax! PS: I mailed you re a collaboration a few months back, not sure if you received it but I never heard back from you...

FYI the Regenerative Breaking exists in passenger cars since early XIX century... It's not a new feature by a long shot.
Nah man that's exactly why people watch obscure car videos. Not for entertainment or escapism, but clumsily shoe-horned in surface-level American political takes.
This video sums up why I love this channel. We all heard the gossip and the rumors but we never really got all the facts about SA motoring heritage and SA motorsport. Here we get 1st class research and investigation into the topics and presented in a way that is fun and nostalgic. I have been sharing these videos with my buddies in the UK to show them we can go toe to toe with whatever they could come up with. KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT VIDEOS
I suppose that with Load Shedding happening on such a frequent basis and for so long, plug-in EV's in South Africa would be just virtue signalling in itself, as one would have to run a PETROL or DIESEL power generator to recharge it at home. There are multiple examples of charging stations in remote places in the world, that are run on "fossil fuel" generators. Therefore, South Africa is an odd place to develop a plug-in EV.
Yah that is true but development was started 5 years before loadshedding first started and with loadshedding seemingly over now and a big push towards solar in households, where the Joule was designed to be charged, it could make quite a bit difference.
A lot of the target market has solar panels at home. Solar panels are cheap if you don't have to buy batteries but then there is the problem of driving around during the day when solar charging is best...
It's time that people start realising that Elon is the biggest bullshitter on earth. He has never invented anything, he just steals other people's companies.
Imagine acting like a child over Elon Musk lmao. If Elon was black he would’ve been heralded as a hero of south african success but instead hes treated like scum of the earth, what a wonderful world
I'm white and I think he's a doos. He has never invented anything, just rides on other people's backs and bullshits the trumpanzee end of the IQ curve.
Young man....if you want to be succesfull, then best you keep your political views to yourself. Trying to be cool because you dont agree with one of the intellectuals of the century is not going to age well for you.

Probably suffers a bit of woke illness, as that is what he let slip as his biggest gripe.
Her mental maturity came out in that pathetic rant.
I approve
We should all. Especially black South Africans

Such a disappointment and we now have to just wonder. I do see that there are rumours of an electric Quantum for SA so all hope is not lost!
SKADONK boet. You do you. Great video. ⭐
the amount of potential this country has but hayi ke
Man what a missed opportunity. Wish they had kept their goal realistic. Perhaps it would have worked out.
I hear a South African accent I subscribe it’s that simple.
In global motor industry nothing is coincidence.
I heard about this car I always wanted to see this car

BRV is in Bloemfontein.
Building some solid bakkies.

Brandt BRV, I saw it as well.Such a cool muscular SA bakkie😢🔥I wish the government could help them out😩
@skadonkza may u plz visit their company sometime.i would love to get a bit of closer, last time I saw the car was on SABC not so long ago😢🔥

Sad that the car stuff must be ruined by his political obsessions. stay neutral dude.

Seemed like an interesting video but lost all interest by 00:19
Im glad we feel the same about Leon Musk
If you trying to make a point at least get the name right 😂
@Gkilleen Trump called him Leon during a rally not too long ago. That's where it comes from
I was interested to hear about the car, but shut it off after the first two sentences.
Had me at the title; lost me at the woke adjacent political vomit at 0:19. Sad

Woke se moer. Just saying it like it is. Muskrat is poison.
EV is a stupid idea on big scale . How will a filling station look if a few hundred EV's need to be charged and it takes a few hours each .
what does your vendetta against elon have to do with an informative video. So unprofessional.
It's time that people start realising that Elon is the biggest bullshitter on earth. He has never invented anything, he just steals other people's companies.
It's hard to explain why this car failed to a woke ANC supporter whose understanding of economics stops at "Gimme free money."
No I’m pretty sure it’s because the government didn’t want to give them R9bn 😄
Could have watched the video if it was not for the childish, woke, mental breakdown in the intro...
