@@Alfa.GT.170 at the moment I've got an engine issue. But It will be running again next summer. It will definitely be at next year's UK National Alfa Day
I moved to SA from the UK in 1983 and used to go to Kyalami with my uncle and dad to watch the racing...the GTV6 was always my favorite to watch, my first car poster in my room was a white GTV6, my first automotive love!
Many years ago I lived in South Africa and a guy down the road had a GTV6 3.0, I drooled all over it day after day. I loved the shape and the lines. The sound was amazing. The downside…they were INCREDIBLY thirsty with those six Dellorto downdraft carburetors nestled in the Vee! I was fortunate enough to see them in action at Kyalami in the 80’s, what an era of motor racing in a country isolated by politics. I mean, even Jeremy Clarkson had mega praise for these iconic vehicles. So sad that there are only a handful left in the world today!
So thirsty, but petrol was cheap back then! Another incredible beast was Ben Morgenrood's rotary Mazda in the Wesbank Modified series. That thing sounded better than any F1 car and spat flames when he rolled off the throttle. Gave me goosebumps watching and hearing it back in the day.
@ Yes, those were the golden years of SA motor racing. Ben’s Mazda, Sarel’s Audi 5-cylinders, and his Cosworth Fords, Hepburn’s thumping V8 and not to mention Viana’s BMW…all gone now 😕
I had the honor of working for Arnold Chatz in that period... That 3.0l V6 was a pleasure to get right... Once the carbs were balanced and set it was a beast.... Spent many a day tearing down those engines and rebuilding them properly... Good memories there - Thank you.....
So so so awesome that you covered this the way you did! My mother had one for a few years. We daily drove the Jetta, as the Alfa only came out certain weekends. It was pristine. When I was small and did not even know what love is…… that made me experience my first exposure to love. Great content!!!! Awesome!!!!
My first car was a second-hand Sprint 105 - the mini GTV-look-alike. It had a 1500cc boxer engine, inboard disk brakes and the typical Italian gibbon-body-type driving position. I loved it, but my heart always yearned for the GTV. The 105 was fairly reliable, but it gave me more than my fair share of _kak_ - and the GTV would've been worse. It's probably just as well it was way beyond my poor student means. PS Amadeo, if you're still kicking, thank you for all the hard work you did on my car.
My dad had a then new 1982 US market GTV6 2.5. It was our first real sports car and we loved it. Surprisingly roomy and usable for a RWD car 1 foot shorter than the current Civic, super fun to drive, and amazing sounding.
Thanks great content. Always loved Alfas. Years ago I test drove a GTV 3.0 at a dealer. It was quite rough but went like nothing I'd been in before. And the sound. They wanted R50000 which was beyond my budget as an apprentice at the time. Later when I qualified I bought an Alfa 159 from it's original owner. That car gave me years of joy.
This brings back memories. Back in 1985 my father ordered the Alfa 3.0 GTV6 in light metallic green at Claremont Alfa Romeo in Cape Town. He put down cash deposit of R10k that was a lot of cash in 1985. Alas, Alfa Romeo pulled out of South Africa. He received the call and heard the bad news. His car was in pre-production thus he lost his Alfa GTV6. Alfa Romeo had launched Diahatsu Charade under licence and he ended up with 2 Diahatsu Charade CXL's instead of his GTV6. One was cream and the other was copper/gold in colour. He gave both my sister and myself the Charade's. My father ended up buying himself Toyota Supra 2.8 instead of the Alfa GTV6. My father had bad luck with cars in 1980's as he also ordered a AMC Hornet that also pulled out of South Africa.
Very well done video. It’s unusual to encounter a South African vlogger. I toyed with buying the Sprint during Alfa’s 75 th Anniversary year, which they made a great thing of. I was shocked when they pulled out of SA shortly thereafter, and relieved I had delayed buying a new car.
Remember years ago as a kid...our one nahbour had a gtv6. (Dont know if it was 2.5 or 3lt).....to this day still remember that....gtv just had a sound of its own...same as a vr6
We have such a unique car culture is SA. Thanks for the upload. What a gem of a car. What about a video featuring Toyota's TRD Corolla 1800? Or the infamous Datsun SSS's
Thank you for a magic video. It's great that you mentioned Roger McLeery. Thanks for showing some footage of Dawie de Villiers of Glenwood Motors who helped build the 3-litre engines in Pretoria. Sampie Bosman actually deserves a special mention as he was the one who started building those engines in Johannesburg.
My friends dad had a red 3.0L V6. He cared more for the car than he did for his wife or kids.....AND JUSTIFIABLY SO. Whenever he pulled the car out on weekends to wash and polish it before a drive, all the neighborhood kids would stand and stare at the automotive celebrity. Those were the days
I`d say just a few more months or evens less before huge corperate companies come knocking on your door bru. You are very eloquent in speech and can see u put alotta hard work and effort in your presentation. i appreciate it , RESPECT bossman! big things coming your nway , just stay grounded and continue doing it for the love of it.
wow.... what a story! Nowadays it is difficult to discover something so important about the history of Alfa Romeo but you managed to surprise me ! I would love to see some videos and hear the legendary Busso singing in this South African version of Alfa Romeo GTV6 3.0
I'm glad you gave full credit to Roger McLeery, without his eagle eye, the 3 Litre would never have seen success. I remember one race at Kyalami in around 1984 when it rained & the track was slippery. I was sitting at Crowthorne, with a view down to Barbecue & Sunset. Sarel van der Merwe in the Ford XR 6 Cobra used his rally experience to drift the car sideways through the bends, in one of the most incredible displays of driving I've ever seen. He absolutely destroyed the Alfas that day.
@skadonkza The greatest era in motoring in SA was the 60's to the late 80's. There was so much innovation & technical expertise available. We had the Grand Prix & the original 9 Hours. If you want to do another great video, go back to the 9 Hours of the 60's & 70's. I was there at all of them, too young to really appreciate what I was seeing, but I have very fond memories, particularly of the Ferrari team, for which my Dad was a volunteer timekeeper, in the days of handheld stopwatches, no transponders to give accuracy to the thousandths of a second.
My Dad had one around about the late 90's/early 00's. A guy had started restoring it and run out of money after he did the engine. I once drove it up a Hillclimb behind the rally car and they could not drop the Alfa. It wasn't even close to the limit and the rally car had the tyres squealing. It had a long gear throw though. Just about tickling the passengers toes to get 1st. Those wide tyres were expensive too.

As an Mechanical Engineering student in 1983 I got to do 3 months work experience with Alfa South Africa. Most of my time was spent with the racing team that fielded a red and blue GTV 3.0 in Group 1 and 1 car in the modified series. The Group 1 cars were raced by a pair of brothers, the sons of the CEO. Given the teams limited budget and small displacement compared to the Ford XR8's & BMW's 745i, the smaller BMW did remarkable well due to it's light weight, weight distribution and good handling. Ford & BMW didn't take well to losing to the Alfa and insisted that the cars where checked by officials after ever race. This delay made it difficult to get the cars ready for the next race. The cars were completely standard. It was such a great time in SA's racing history.

My best car was a colt galant 2.6 and my second and third cars at 18 and 19yrs old late 80's, was both gtvs. Best cars ever and would love to own one again but too expensive now. But just a beautiful car.
My first car was a '73 Giulia 1600 Super. What a great car! I bought a second one (Nuova Super), and then the last model of the Alfasud, which was real fun. They were great cars. Like you I also moved to BMW, starting with four 528's, an E36 328, and now an F30 320d M-Sport. I had an Audi A4 2.8, but returned to BMW. I think, a better car. A great vlog, thanks.

@ He is more annoyed at losing the chance to have a GTV 3.0. It’s fine cause I talked him into getting a 105 series Giulia and a 2.8 GTX Skyline for project cars.
@@QuotableMango Fair enough. The 105 Giulia is also a great car - I passed on the opportunity to buy one years ago and kick myself to this day 🙂. The Skyline is quite different given that the rest are italian, but cool in it's own right for guys into the JDM scene.
Oh boy I was in high school. The must have was a GTV 3 L but Alfas were not known for reliance, or value for money, or keeping resale. More of the engine, road drive experience!?
As an ITalian and An Alfista the saloons/sedans always drove better than the GT/GTVs on road from the longer wheelbase. The Alfetta platform launched in May 1972 not 1974. Also Giugiaro wished "nothing" to do with the Alfetta GT design since Alfa Romeo engineers had redone the front windscreen angle following a windtunnel test and changed his design substantially. Also despit ethe v6 being an excellent and reliable engine, the Bialbero twin cam was a much better engine in the Alfetta than the v6 due to its weight being centralised and it heads lower down, and the twin spark racing version in the Giulia GTAM produced 147Kw (220hp) in 1971, more than the SA 3.0 v6. The GTAM engine was subsequently put into the Autovama Alfetta race cars in ITaly who were very competitive but Alfa Romeo failed to support GT racing in that period to the degree it did with the Giulia. The road GTV6 road car gives a lovely engine sound and excellent handling but the GTV handles better with the four cylinder engine on the road.
"Card carrying BMW fanboy". Haha I love it. Me too. I was in my 20s when the GTV6 3.0 was doing its thing. I was a tragic Alfa nut then. Owned an Alfetta 1800 and GTV 2000 at different times. Now a solid BMW fan. But I have to disagree, a BMW straight 6 at full song sounds better than the Alfa Busso!
I am a BMW fan and Alfa Romeo fan. The Alfas in this video did not sound fantastic in my opinion, the Group One racers had a short exhaust exiting under the door, never a recipe for a great sound. The road cars don't do it for me either. But over the years I have heard incredible sounding GTV6's with fancy exhausts. Yes E30 325is also sounds great, maybe better than my 2.5 inline 6 E36. Difficult one. But a good GTV6 sound just gives me goosebumps. And by the way, the 2.5 Busso is sweeter sounding than the 3.0.
You think a team raceing a car would know they had a raceing engine sitting I'm the corner were doing terrible but we can't bebotgerd putting the raceing engine in 😂😂😂😂 Italians I love that alfa gtvg infact I love most alfas

Sorry lad but I think that the best GTV comes from Australia, Giocattolo Group B. It's a V8 not the puny Italian V6.
Nissan 1tonner 3.0 v6 is the best sounding v6

It's a BMW E46 M3 CSL
Are you not aware that the Giocattolo existed
vw's vr6 is Not A V6.......its a staggered 6...there is no v configuration on those engines....sound of those engines can not be compared to a v6...
But isn't it a narrow v 6 under a single head?
