*one correction: @8:50 , this an Escort, not a Cortina as stated.
Basil Green's Perana's revolutionised how South African's think about Ford in a way reminiscent of the stunning work of Carroll Shelby. Over his career, he reimagined the Cortina, Escort, Capri, Grenada and Sapphire from family sedans to fire breathing monsters. This is the story of how that played out.

Great video! A previous colleague of mine in New Zealand didn't want to believe me, when I told him that we had a Capri Perana in South Africa with a V8 - not just a one-of custom job, but a production vehicle. I will share this excellent video with him. Keep up the great work!
Welldone !!!! ….the one Capri Perana photo in your video is mine…
Thank you so much my friend. In 1976 I (a rookie apprentice) wanted to buy a Perana. My dad, an engineer at Iscor told me I was nuts. To proof it he arranged a test drive in his friend, Dr van Biljon's Perana. Doc v Biljon's friend was Basil Green, and apparently he ordered his to be more special than the standard ones. He told me his developed 320 hp (compared to the 280 in the standard Peranas) Dr van Biljon took us for a spin. I was sitting way back in the passenger seat. Waau that was awesome. Still remember it as it was yesterday. Anyway being a poor apprentice I bough a 1930 Chevrolet. No acceleration, just movement but what an awesome introduction to my amazing lifelong love with cars. Love from S Africa. Never forget our other heros. Too many to name but Eddie Keizan, Bob Olthoff, Van Rooyen, the Fekkens, Peter Gough etc etc I salute you all.
I am no petrol head...Don't know why your channel was recommended to me. Your video presentation and narration is great. Keep it up!
You are really good at this. Just hope you don’t run out of SA specials. Please keep up the good work. Nicolas, Belgium
Not very likely - there were so many specials over the years. Being from Belgium, do you remember the Ranger - a rebadged Opel/Vauxhall? It was sold as "South Africa's own car" during the late 60s but when discontinued locally, production was continued in Belgium where it was apparently quite popular.
@@willactually7509 never heard of it before. VW T3 has a big community … could be good for views
@@willactually7509 Also SA is full of mad garage scientiests who create insane things all the time 😂
These videos are great! Thanks bro
Yeah boy! U did it once again, keep doing what u doing we'll keep backing it up!!!
Top job mate
My uncle had a capri perana, back in 2006, hes kicking himself now that they've skyrocketed in price🤣🤣
You did the video on Basil Green :) Thats awesome !
Bro I'm digging these videos so much and learning a lot! 🙏 Watching this on a break while biking in Sweden 🇸🇪 much love 🤗❤️
"*one correction: @8:50 , this an Escort, not a Cortina as stated.", that threw me off for a moment there, but good on you for getting it right! Well done! You got yourself another sub. Keep making more of these videos showcasing South Africa's automotive and motorsport history. 👍
Great video king. Proud of what you're doing.
Bro, thank you soooooo much for sharing this story and with such detail and passion. I met Basil the legend and went through most of those days, purchased a Ford Laser 1.6i Sport from his dealership in the day.
Thanks for this I’ve always had an interest in the Capri perana.
My 1st "encounter" with a V8 was with a Capri Perana , in the Gunston colours, back in 1985/86. I was busy playing arcade games at our local fish & chips cafe, when we heard a helluva loud thundering noise. I left the game to see what was going on across the road. All I could see from where the noise came from, was a HUGE cloud of thick white tire smoke. I stood a few seconds watching to see what was causing this, when suddenly the V8 Perana came flying out from the cloud. Me & all the boys from the cafe ran across to go have a look at the car & the tyre marks on the road. I even peeled off a small pyramid of shredded tyre that was left on the road. And from that day on I was hooked on V8's. 😁
Fantastic video, my Capri Perana is still a great car to drive.
Both the Capri and the Grenada were awesome cars!!!
very good presentation. I want more!
I drove a Granada Perana Ghia for many years as my daily driver. As smooth, quiet and comfortable as the contemporary Mercedes-Benz 350 SE of the time, but could smoke the tyres at a robot like a Jaguar XJ-S (for those too young to know, THAT car could smoke the whole road up). 😂😂😂
They just don't build cars like that anymore and I got pulled off by the cops many, many times in it. Great memories🤣
PS: Your coverage of the history of Basil Green is SUPERB 😀😀😀
Yoh that really is the dream. I can imagine you upset quite a few larney car drivers back in the day.
@@skadonkza - I sure did😂😂😂
It looked like your typical Granny Granada (full exhaust, V8 badges removed) so it was so unsuspecting. They when you applied some right foot, it became schizophrenic.
First car I had that suffered from bipolar.
Always loved the look of that Gunston Orange Perana! Amazing stance. Makes every other Capri look like it needs to go to the gym.
Awesome😂
Basil Green and Peter Gough fighting each other around Killarney in the late 60's and early 70's. MEMORIES...
Love your videos. Thanks for making them, and hopefully, there'll be many more. Have to mention that I always look forward to seeing your cat in the background. Almost thought he'd been banned from the last video, and then there he was!
I don't own him, he owns me. So i can't decide when he'll pitch up :)
Never heard of a Perana, Would like to see a one ☝️
Sick video, keeping us up to speed.
Elite video essay again
you two sound the same😂
Its Dan Corder🤣
Excellent.. tell us about the South african Opel irmsher
Quirky little fords look fun.
Love this!! 🚗
Thank you for the great story but history
As teenagers back in the 60's my mate and I would go to the local speed equipment supplier in Salisbury Rhodesia and "drool" on the window looking at BG equipment we could not afford.
Thank you; please do the Cortina pick up/bakkie.💪🏼😎
Basil Green our hero in SA
Just wanna ask, are Perana's cars still available for sale in the South African market?
Yoh almost none, they’re all collectors items. I know there are quite a few in England and New Zealand
@@skadonkza dang🤧. It would have been best to keep at least one of their priced cars in their own museum in mzansi
Most people that own them know what they have and keep them in private collections, attend a few local classics car shows and you'll probably see a few.
So the Cortina Perana was the same as the Cortina Savage made by Jeff Uren in England?
Kinda surprised Basil Green didn't have a hand in the Sierra XR8
No, but he DID release the Sierra Perana 3.4 ! In my opinion better than the XR8, basically had the V6 Essex from the XR6, but supercharged. I have the original CAR magazine with the test somewhere but I believe it out performed and out handled the XR8
EDIT : It's in the video at the 9:25 mark
First viewer check ✔️
Literally drive past basil green ford everyday and didn't know who he was
Can you do a vid on stance
Grenada Perana V8 a Sandton of the time. Bike catcher.
It was not a Cortina XR3...It was an Escort XR3 Perana
The XR3 was an Escort
XR6 was a cortina
CORTINA XR3 i ??????
It was an xr3 escourt not cortina
little escort probably ended up 64kg heavier...not lighter.
Great video!! One thing, the "Cortina Perana" at 8:50 ...
I worked for Ford in the 80's when they released the Escort MkIII ("Erika") in 1981 - (Escort XR3 was the top performance version). What you are showing in your video @ 8:50 and calling the "Cortina Perana" is in fact a Ford Escort MkIII "Erika".
It is extremely unlikely that Basil Green or Ford would have called the modified "Erika" Escort a "Cortina", because at the time (1981/2), there was a Cortina model available and selling well, the Cortina MkV. with the XR6 being the performance version with the XR6 Interceptor coming out later on.
The "Erika" was a total disaster, and instead of being an improvement on the MkII Escort (1600 Sport shape) that everyone thought it would be - it took many steps backwards and had numerous issues.
ah you're right. Sorry, a brain fart in the recording
Not a problem 😂. Apart from the "slip" (which, as I'm almost certain you were not born when the cars were still current models) is extremely easy to do and NOT a black mark on your excellent videos and the obvious time you spend doing research.
08:38 its a Mk3 Escort Perana not a cortina...
