I own an 02 Ranger 4.0 SOHC with 145,000 miles and I'll say one really big thing to look for if youre buying a used one in the 98-2006 4.0 SOHC models is take it for a test drive to get the engine warm then let it sit and idle and LISTEN for a constant or intermittent rattle. The timing chain tensioners are poorly designed in these years and when they fail the chain destroys the flimsy guides and the chain will get more and more slack til it jumps timing and fails catastrophically.

My dad has the same truck except his is 2004 Black Flare side and Automatic and it has 178,000 miles on it and its going strong. He didn't buy it new but has had it for about 8 to 10 years at least and has put at least 100,000 of those miles on it. It's garage kept and he changes the oil every 3,000 miles and keeps up with all routine maintenance. And luckily he hasn't had any trouble with the automatic transmission either.

I loved the rangers. Had a 97 xlt 4x4 with six foot bed. Awesome truck. Sold it last year. Have a family. A two seat truck Dosent fit four. But that 4L six. Kicked arse. Only replaced the ac compressor, alternator, gas float and 4x4 relay. Thought for sure I would go through a thermostat. Never did. Ended up changing the gas float. But hey. Had the truck since 98. Second owner. And those are the only problems I had. Can’t complain. She was a great work truck. Kids loved her.

I take good care of my vehicles too. If you want, I can bring my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee for your review. I bought it new. It still looks and drives like a new vehicle. Zero rust, no oil leaks, no major repairs. I only changed shocks, spark plugs and wires and one door lock. That's it. MY Toyotas had more issues than the Jeep.

My dad bought an 88’ Ranger XLT in late 1987 in Pennsylvania just the single cab with 4x4. I drove it later in the early 2010s as a winter vehicle as I made a poor choice in choosing mustangs as my daily drivers and passed the 200k mile mark on the original transmission, 2.3L engine and transfer case. Replaced some components through the years to keep it manageable like u- joints, exhaust etc.. but he didn’t even consider getting a new paint job until it’s 25th anniversary as someone trying to squeeze in an alley way with a moving truck an scraped the side. He got it painted, fix some rust holes in the frame himself prior but never the frame. Sold it about 4 or 5 years ago to a guy we knew through my brother even for a few grand and found out later he drove to Colorado and back to Pennsylvania. As far as I know, one of the 3 most bulletproof domestic vehicles ever made other than certain year Chevy Cavaliers and the box style Cherokee Limited.

    Good video.
There used to be a saying
    years ago, If l rust l bust,no
    rust no bust.
If toyotas rust they don't bust.
Unless they a dipped in the sea every day for ten years
Then it might fall to pieces.
Toyotas are made of good quality steel and a good dipping process to seal the steel.

The government keeps forcing the auto makers to get better gas mileage. So we got cylinder shut down and 10 speed crapo automatic and cvt transmissions and 1.2 litre turbo gdi engines. No wonder why they break down all the time. Next year the government will want better mileage and here we go again.

I'm impressed, that is a nice Ranger! My '07 Subaru Legacy with 166k miles still looks new, though the dreaded wheel well rust finally became apparent on the right rear wheel well, where I see bubbles forming under the paint along the lip. Maybe about the best you can hope for out of a Subaru body - I think 14 years is better than average for a northeast non-garaged Subie!
