I own a 1997 Ford ranger cap and 1/2 is 5 sp I got right now 220,000 miles in the little truck takeoff like a new one I love this Little truck the only problem we have no AC from factory but it’s OK I love it👍4.0l and I change my oil and I use high mileage oil👌
Good detailed video. I have a 2000 4.0l 4x4. All stock except for a brake controller and aftermarket topper. I tow an utility trailer, 16 boat or 21 travel trailer.
Nice! Any issues with the transmission since you tow? The transmission in this rig blew up spectacularly about 6 months ago and we had to install a rebuilt one. But its 100% good to go now and it did have 250,000 on it when it went. We feel like we may not have changed the fluid often enough, but on the other hand, 250k is a good while for an auto trans, especially one that was in a truck that worked a lot of its life. It’s actually a myth in the case of plastic or glass such as windshield that factory is better. A windshield at a reputable place is a windshield! Most aftermarket plastic window visors are the same as the factory! They’re just cheaper maybe better sometimes! They just don’t say Ford on them!

Love the truck! A couple months ago I was really close to buying a Ranger and this video did it for me. I purchased a 2005 Supercab 4.0 4wd w/137k miles. Still not road ready as I'm overhauling the suspension. Can't wait to have it on the road next week! Question - with the torsion key leveling kit did you have to put a spacer on your shock? Mine came with one but there isn't any room to put it on the shock. I am also not sure about what effect this would have on bottoming out the shocks. Also what tire size are you running? Man that's so cool!! So we've actually upsized the tires a little since this video, its now running 265/75R16 BFGoodrich KO2s. It was running the stock size tires in that video. As to the shocks, when Jake leveled the truck, we put new, longer shocks on it. The kit we used spec'd a longer shock and we can't remember what the length was, but we remember it was wrong. So we ended up going down to the parts store and just opening up shocks until we found one that fit. The right one turned out to be 2 inches longer than the truck at full axle droop. So we'd say you'll need that spacer or go with longer shocks like we did. Good luck with it and let us know how it goes!

This one has a leveling kit on it, we didn't crank up the torsion bars, so its using the stock bar adjustment. But yes, that aside, we agree Rangers can ride better than this one. Its mostly the shocks we have on it, they have very high rebound settings. Thanks for the comment!
In your opinion is a 2008 ranger with 159,000 miles worth it to buy I mean the truck is in super great condition drove nice no problems just bed floor needs to be replaced which I know someone who can do it but, the question said should I buy it or look for something else
Judging from our 2006 (in the video) 159k is barely broken in. Ours is at 260k and still going strong. As long as its only the bed, seems like a good deal with those few miles on it. Before you do the work on the bed, check your local Pull & Pay. We got our other Ranger rear-ended hard and we got an entire bed the same color off a junkyard truck that had been hit hard in the front and just swapped it over. Ended up being way cheaper than we expected. If you do go the fix the bed route, we highly recommend Raptor Liner after you're done, the stuff is awesome! And it'll hide welding lines if they aren't perfect. And if you have the bed off you can do both sides like we're doing with our F-250. It would be great to see the abused part of the title include mechanical abuse with video of engine, transmission, suspension component wear. Cool Ford Courier ad -- 39/27 mpg. I, and every auto parts store, city maintenance fleet, etc. where I used to see white Ford Rangers, would buy one if still made today. Not interested in today's version of the Ford Ranger with reduced mpg, toy-sized bed, and "ecoboost" (turbocharged) engine that either blows up or drinks oil at 100k miles.

Jake did extensive testing on it when he had it and he says it consistently got just under 15, with mostly city driving. It could get 16-17 with lots of highway, although keep in mind when Jake had it most of its life it had a lumber rack on it that wasn't super aerodynamic. It's chipped, and Ty says he can get 18 mpg with the econo tune and careful driving.
I had a 1998 ranger with 360k miles on the original motor and transmission. Even after it was totaled from the front, it still drove. They really can be unkillable
That's awesome! The 96 we showed in the video has literally been hit on every side, including underneath, and had its driver's door ripped off. Once it was leaving the body shop after getting rear ended and on the corner outside of the body shop... it got rear ended again. Just turned around and took it back to the body shop lol. But even with all of that its still going strong and is a great little truck. So yeah, totally agree with you. They are hard to kill. Thanks for the comment!
That was a lot of good detail. You covered all the questions I had. Gas mileage of the 3 L compared to the 4 L, it is still in great shape even though it has been run through winter weather, the comfort of the ride, The aftermarket parts were a good tip to look out for thank you very much. I had a 2004 flareside 2X4, traded it in for a 2011 4.0 4X4 FX4. Still my daily driver. Bought an F150 last year but kept the Ranger. I refuse to part with it. Not the fanciest vehicle out there but it's fun to drive and so reliable. Love this little truck.
@@dazednconfusedrn have you gotten your ranger yet? I'm in BC and yeah the gas mileage on the 4.0L V6's seem to suck as far as what I've read, but I'm still probably gonna get one, although might go for a 2.3 L or 3L 2wd which might be better on gas

Great Truck i have an 2001 xlt Ranger with 337,000k it runs great my daily driver and took about 14 trips from Connecticut to Florida on original engine and transmission. Also have a 2016 Lincoln MKS EcoBoost. And to tell you the truth I Luv my Ranger better 💀🕷💀
I have an 06 3L automatic. Love it but hate the lag between 3,000 rpm and 3,600. Really sucks up hill but around the neighborhood it’s not bad. Didn’t realize so many people loved them till I got mine. Looks great in red!
The 3.0 is a very solid engine but yeah it just doesn't quite have the punch of the 4.0 so we totally agree with you. That said, we couldn't agree more that it looks awesome in red!

Bought my '04 FX4 Ranger XLT used with 94k miles about 2 years ago for $2,400. It was in good shape for its age; it had a few scrapes, a ding in the outer corner of the driver-side door, the previous owner was a smoker (it took me around 6 months to fully eliminate the cigarette funk), and I had to replace the thermostat and serpentine belt. Overall I'm pleased with it, I'm currently at 130k miles and it's been running like a champ. My only real criticisms of the Ranger would be the lack of headroom in the cab - I'm 6' 2" and I find I have to either lean a bit to one side or slouch a little - if I don't do that my head constantly rubs against the headliner. That, and it's *way* more thirsty than I had anticipated for a smaller truck.
That's awesome, the FX4 is a sweet truck. One of the things we didn't get into in the video due to time constraints is this Ranger has a Superchip's tuner, and one of the tunes is economy. It really helps with the gas mileage. Although it also has a performance tune and that one does the opposite lol
I have a 04 Ranger Sport 3.0l auto. Close to 300,000 miles runs great uses no oil never had any issues and I drive it pretty aggressively. It'll run 75-80 all day (that's the speed limits in TX) love my little truck
This was an excellent video. You got a great truck. I wish I could find one like this with the 4x4, rear hatch and 4L. Only thing I would change is the suspension to give it a smoother ride. Maybe a new deck with Bluetooth audio
I have a 1998 xlt 4x4 supercab Off Road Pkg, and it rides really nice. It had a nice ride when new as well. When the shocks and tires were replaced I've upgraded and it probably handles better now than new. Currently have Rancho shocks, cranked the torsion bars a little to level out the front, replaced the plastic sway bar end links with metal instead of plastic, and now running Michelin LTX AT2 265/70R16 tires. I've had it since new and still love driving it today. It's a 4.0 with 3.73 limited slip rear with a 5 speed manual transmission (Mazda Transmission all original except clutch replaced).
We are on our 4th Ranger. We had an 83, 88, 90 and our current 11. Our current Ranger is a XLT super cab 4X4 with the 4.0 V6, auto transmission, LSD, tow pkg. We added a K&N intake and a 3” FlowMaster exhaust. (After these mods we now get 25mpg on the freeway with the cruise set on 75mph). We also added 2 tone paint (factory silver over metallic red), custom upholstery to match the exterior colors, custom wheels, running boards, Line-X spray in bed liner, adjustable rear air shocks. I change the oil every 4K miles with Mobile 1 full synthetic. I also change the front and rear differentials, transfer case and transmission flush every 30K miles. We use our Ranger mostly for work around our property. We don’t abuse it, but we do work it. Many times we have at least a yard of top soil in the bed. Two years ago we had to get some things from my wife’s family farm in MT. It’s a 12 hour drive from our home in north central WA state. Returning home, the truck was loaded with equipment. I put 75# of air in the shocks and 50# in the tires. When we got on I-90, I set the cruise on 85mph and was still getting 23mpg. Most of its life is used for hauling stuff but when it’s empty, it hauls ass. I did race a Chevy Tahoe a few months ago on the highway. When the light turned green I hit the gas (I was in a hurry). Apparently the Tahoe driver thought I was wanting to race, so I mashed the pedal to the floor. I know his Tahoe probably had a 5.3 V8. We couldn’t pass each other until we hit 105 mph and his governor kicked in and that’s when my Ranger pulled away. When I hit 110mph, I let off the gas. I gave him a “Thumbs Up” (ie; thanks for the race), but he refused to acknowledge me. I suppose he was butt hurt that his V8 lost to a 4.0 V6. 😂 I did learn that my Ford up shifts from 4th to 5th at 100mph. Our 11 Ranger only has 35K original miles. My wife and I are in our 50s and we plan on letting our relatives fight over our Ranger after we’re dead and gone.
How's the transmission currently? I'm looking to buy a 4.0l v6 2010 here soon with 200k miles for 2600 bucks. But not sure because that sounds sketchy at that price in 2024
@@JNguyen07Max Our transmission is great but our Ranger has only 36K miles. If the truck was maintained properly then there shouldn’t be any problems. Some early 2010 Ranger’s had an issue with engine knock. Take it for a long test drive. If the transmission is slipping or can’t find the right gear, then the transmission is getting ready to go
I had an 02 Ranger with the 3L.. thing had 350 000 Miles before it got written off in an accident! RAN GREAT!!!! i since got a used 2006 Ranger and still have it today.. great truck
No, that’s not common with aftermarket tow bars! To prevent rust by a Kurt made in the US towbar! Then wash them and put car polish on them every three times you wash the car! If you ever get rust. Brush it off with a wire brush. Sand it clean. Then spray it black with automotive spray paint. Spray two coats at least. Then spray in automotive clearcoat, then continue waxing it every three months at minimum.
No wrong! So-called cold air intake can actually lose you power & money! Cold air intake can actually be hot air intake!! The best thing to do for your intake is to put a high flow paper filter on and change it every three or four months.
I have two Rangers a 1995 3.o Vulcan funny thing about this one is I paid $450 over 10 years ago and it had 160,000 the mileage didn't work back then so I do know who many miles she have and still running strong...then I have a 1997 4.0 Cyclone love it to it has over 200,000 runs like a champ Power Rangers
This is fantastic! I have a 2007 ranger very similar to this one except it has a manual transmission, looking forward to a long and happy life with it! At least until I have kids.
Our advice is to keep it if you can even with the kids. When they're really little you'll have issues cause no car seat but when they get big enough they'll love riding in the jump seats and we can tell you from personal experience,: they grow up fast and it seems like no time before you're back in a position where the truck make sense. Ive got an '03 FX4 ranger and it rode awesome until i put the aitbags on back so i could pull a camper. You're blaiming the harsh ride on the truck. take the airbags off and it's a different ride. Great trucks, i love my ranger.

The 2011 is still the best. For the 2019 looks good but that's all. No pulling power. 4 cylinder with a turbo. American let Ford know to bring the 6 cylinder back.
I have a somewhat rusty '96 B4000 (OHV 4L) with a slipping slushbox. When I floor it, it only revs out for one gear, it's weird. Don't understand how it could stay at 3000rpm and stop pulling much after shifting up one gear, then shift up again with the throttle body wide open. Still it just survived a 700 mile road trip. Bought an abused '97 tacoma with low dirty oil and hopefully just a valve cover leak because I felt bad or something. Regret it, at least it seems to have no rust. Should probably have swapped the transmission on my current one with a manual, it would've been perfectly fine.
The automatic to manual conversion on the 96 is pretty straightforward. We looked into doing it on the 06 in the video and you pretty much need a donor vehicle to get everything you need to make the swap work so we passed. We hear you, always sucks to let something go. Rust is horrible tho. We're fixing all the rust on our Project F-250 series and man oh man, its a lot of welding and cleaning and fixing. It's horrible lol. Can't go wrong with a good ol' Taco, hope its just the valve cover. Good luck, and thanks for commenting!
Original timing chains for the mileage that’s surprising I like the 3.0L in theses you can do a lot of upgrades to the 3.0L cams headers upgrade rocker arms they use to make a drop in whipple supercharger for the 3.0L I’m currently looking for one I just put a new fresh long block 3.0L in mine

Great informative review and I enjoyed watching the road trip. Great scenery! I have a 2011 Ranger, XLT, Super cab, 4 door, 4.0 V6, shadow gray metallic (the official color name).. Bought it new with 18 miles on it. Now, 10 years and a few months later, 155K or so. Bone stock. Super reliable, has worked and played and taken me on road trips, hauled arcade games (I'm in the hobby), moved many things and pulled trailers. I've taken great care of it and it's never let me down. The money light is on for the bad catalytic converter that I need to fix before next April. But it still faithfully does the work commute every day. Everything still works fine on it (A few things have been fixed in recent years, nothing major). Love my truck!
That's awesome! Sounds like a great truck and we love how they just keep doing an honest day's work, day in and day out. Little advice on the cat front, we just had to eat an $800 aftermarket cat because our other project truck did not play well with it after 8 months. We replaced the aftermarket cat with a factory cat and the truck is happy now. There are some great aftermarket cats out there but be sure to do your research so you don't have to repeat what we did. Seriously, any functioning truck for under $2500 is a steal these days. A 1986 Ford F-350 just sold next to us for $10k. Wasn't restored or anything, nice shape, but just an old truck. Our 2 cents? $2200 Canadian is a steal for a supercab 4x4 with the 4.0 and 180k miles is not a ton for those trucks. Ours has 260,000 miles. Good luck!

I'm super happy with the truck it's like brand new .. 😂.. most of my friends shock cuz they all get Tacoma.. and I can not afford it.. but my Ranger to me it's the best .. low miles.. it's look so new.. first owner keep that truck for go out.. another truck he doing work.. I feel lucky that I bought it..
I had a 98 ford ranger xlt 4.0 engine was awesome but salt got the best of it and the frame snapped like a pretzel 😢 I've never had good luck with ford trucks
Yeah, my 99 was rusted out bad and I was told it could snap any time. Sorry to hear it happened to you. The used car dealer I bought mine from had a 2005 xlt 4.0 on his lot and I stopped in to chat. He gave me a good deal on it with a trade-in for my rusted rig. The 99 was an automatic, 2005 is a manual every which way. Really love it and take really good care of it. Purrs like a kitten at 187k. I did have a rough spell when my left knee hurt bad and I couldn't shift, so couldn't drive for a few months. I'm not planning on selling it, but next time around I would probably get an automatic. Simple is nice though. Also, with our vehicles I spray the undersides with regular Fluid Film and let me tell you it is amazing how well it works. I can do my truck and her car for 4 or 5 cans. Redo every fall, but it doesn't take as much the next go around. I did try the black special Fluid Film but didn't care for it as much. Maybe keep your eye out for another ranger and if it has a decent frame go for it?
My 2003 has under 100,000 miles , it has a colour matched fiberglass bed cover that keeps the back end quiet . Mine is the 2 wheel drive Edge model not the 4 wheel drive , but that's fine with me .
I just bought a 2003 Ranger with 139k Monday for $3k. It's had a lot of suspension parts replaced but the sheet metal is crap. It's my 3rd Ranger. The others were a 1991 and 1996. I've been happy with them.

Currently it is on its 4th transmission as it blew its original shortly after this video, and the company that did the rebuild for us apparently doesn’t know how to actually rebuild transmissions. I bought my first vehicle a 2009 Ford ranger 4.0 with 13 thousand miles on October 2019 and now it's got 21 thousand on September 7 2020 she's a rebuilt but I plan on keeping her as long as I live
That's awesome! That' 4.0 is a great motor and you can't go wrong having a good truck like that your whole life. Congrats on picking an awesome rig for your first vehicle!
It really depends on where you are and the condition of that particular Ranger. The one in this video, for example, would be worth twice that in Denver because Uncle Jake was fastidious about its maintenance and every single thing on it is perfect, no oil leaks, nothing needing attention. So if the 2003 you're looking at has been well cared for and doesn't need anything, $6k seems very reasonable. If it has a lot of deferred maintenance, has rust or body damage or needs anything major then maybe that's a bit steep. Good luck with it!
@@MotorsandMischief It doesn't have the drop down seats in the back, it'll need new speakers and mirror, and new cruise control switches. Possibly a new ignition and door key bc the ignition key doesn't open the doors. It's also doing this weird thing where you have to leave the key in for 5 seconds, hear 3 "anti theft" lock beeps, then it'll turn on. If you don't hear 3 beeps it just won't turn on.... or even crank..is this a big issue? Or something small I can turn off? Thanks for all the help man!!
Help!!! I've an 07 Ranger 205,000 mi that keeps dying every 6 mos, they keep putting a fuelpump in - factory Ford pump, & it keeps dying mos later! Any ideas?? I live in Denver. I've a 1994 that is My back-up truck & have only put in one pump 378,000 mi.never an issues..
Man that's got to be frustrating! If you bench test an old pump does it work out of the truck? If the old pump works on the bunch, sure sounds like a ground or power to the the pump, something that's being disconnected when the new pump is installed which fixes/cleans the connection, then after 6 months corrosion or whatever is building up and killing the connection. If the pump is truly fried, then 1) are you running it really low on fuel between fill ups? We have a Suburban that will reliably eat fuel pumps if you take it below an 1/8th of a tank because the pump uses the fuel to cool itself and it overheats with low fuel. If we fill it at 1/4 tank the pumps last forever. 2) if you're not running it low on fuel the only other thing we can think of is maybe a power surge is frying the pumps so perhaps replace the fuses and relay going to the pump and see if that helps at all. Man good luck with it, that's a head scratcher!

The last time it did this, in April they noted that there was corrosion at the connector @ fuelpump. the shop mgr said they'd put a new connector on. i've been trying to figure out where , how the corrosion got started in 1st place as the truck was never a rustbelt vehicle, however i found evidence that the owner lived in Florida for a bit after starting life in N. Mexico, and may have got caught in hurricane surge thus getting salt water up in there, possible driven on beach and splashed salt water too,- i totally frown on these practices, as it could ruin newer cars leaving 2nd owners w a nightmare!! Yes i do understand the pumps rely enough fuel in tanks to lubricate & keep cool. I've been filling at the .4 tank as well, Ironically enough , the '94 i mentioned, I've owned for 21 yrs now , and alot of times ran it to 8th tank status alot, and the pump didn't fail til 350k, well i got lucky there. So back to the 007. the pump was warranted on the last rem, and was bench tested at the supplier and they said it was good. So, yes i agree w you that it is obvious that the power is being disrupted somewhere else now, or the corrosion is back @ connector. I'm wondering if it might b the inertia switch is intermitedly malfunctioning , as it gets reset eveytime a repair is made to fuel sys., possible the relays could b at fault. but they keep checking good, however the '94 had a false fuelpump fail when it was about 10yo and it turned out that the connector pins at the relays became loose, the guys at that shop were ford gurus and fixed it.,- - that shop no longer has those guys as they've long retired, plus have sold it long ago..uggh!, - that shop was ,- Lakewood auto electric, still carries the same name but not the ford gurus. The truck is at Tapps' garage which is the shop whos been fighting this problem w me, tomorrow they'll be back at it in discovery, I'm going to mention that the corrosion may b back like you'd said. thank you. I'll repost their findings.
@@robertfrazier7606 Might be the Inertia shutoff switch under the glove box. If the truck were to get into an accident it shuts off the pump. Mine accidently got kicked one day and the truck stalled out going down the road. I was told I needed a new fuel pump which was not true. I replaced the pump and the truck still wouldn't start. Yeah I just got the truck back yesterday, they found corrosion allover back side of in cab fuse/relay/inertia swich panel on the pass side floor kick ., they repaired some damage wires , cleaned everything and coated it with dialectic grease Yeah on my '94 the inertia switch is up under glove box.
Year and a half ago I bought my 2000 XLT 3.0 automatic 4x2 extended cab with the jump seats and short bed. 78,268 original miles for $2500. My first truck ever at 73 years old. Good condition. No rust (former California truck). Runs great. Metallic Red with tan cloth interior. I want to lower it with a 4/5 kit maybe this summer when I have some time. I just use it as a daily driver and for stuff from Home Depot and the like. No off roading here in suburban Chicago. Like your channel. Subscribed. Good video. Thanks
I was hoping this would actually be a buyers guide for a used Ford ranger and instead it's very specific to this truck and 95% of the commentary is about a look I found a good used Ford ranger and let me tell you about everything the guy did with this very specific Ford ranger.

I own the Orkin style truck, same running boards, wheels and color. Purchased new January 2012 in Pittsburgh. With loan the total cost was 27,000. Replaced the clutch at 100,000 and blew out the a/c compressor at about 60,000. Its a great truck. I had the underside coated with an oil product at Steel City undercoating after some research. What made a lot of sense was the coatings lock in any moisture and the rusting process continues. Whereas the oil will penetrate the metal. BTW took her up to Watkins Glenn during covid to kayak and bike and to my surprise the track was open @ 3 laps for $30. Glad I didn't have the kayaks at the time, but what a trip!

I have a 2007 Ranger XLT and it's in fair condition. But, recently I've been getting a delay when I start the engine. It is a 4.0L. I changed the fuel filter and the battery but, I'm still getting a delay when I start the engine...delay meaning it just spins like it wants to start but, it doesn't until I turn the key off and then turn the key on and then it starts. I'm thinking it must be the fuel pump going bad. Could that be the problem??
There's a check valve in the fuel pump that keeps the system pressurized. That valve can go bad and then the truck will take excessive cranking to start. The way to test is to key on, listen for the fuel pump running, key off, key on, about 3-4 times until you're sure the system is pressurized, then start. If the truck fires right up, then that check valve is the issue and you need a new pump. If it still cranks like crazy before it starts, its more likely something like a camshaft or crankshaft position sensor is going out and the computer is looking for the rpm signal before firing off the injectors. Check out the Ranger forums, there's some great resources for exactly this problem that will help you troubleshoot if its not the fuel pump check valve. Good luck and thanks for commenting!

So you are correct that generally speaking the 3rd gen ended in 2011, however there was a short 2012 run produced for fleet sales, at least according to wikipedia which is where we got a lot of the info for this video. It’s not the springs. It likely the aftermarket shocks that provide a such harsh ride. Many of the aftermarket shocks are quite a bit stiffer than OEM.

The oil residue from your cold air intake is coating your MAF sensor and other parts. You also should really re-tune your truck because you are giving more air than original design and that old ECU can't adjust for it. What performance difference did you notice? Is it running lean? I would put original air box back on if it was my Ranger. Just sayin
Not sure what we said in the video to make it seem like the truck has a MAF issue but we use K&Ns on all our rigs and have for over 20 years, as well as in the Baja 1000 on race trucks we crewed for. Never have we had a problem with oil bothering the MAF except one time with the new guy cleaned and reoiled the filter and put waaaaaaay too much oil on it. As far as the time, we have a Superchips tune on it, even tho the MAF will read the increased airflow and adjust accordingly. But thanks for the comment!

You tune your engines after changing airflow and the average Joe who buys this filter can put too much oil on it and cause issues down stream. Thanks for making my point. 95% of people put these on and never even re-oil them which is not good either.
I have a 1998 4x4 supercab xlt 4x4 off road pkg and upgraded to Rancho shocks (with front torsion bars cranked to level it out) and it rides great. I replace the factory tires with Michelin AT2's in a 265/70/R16 and it goes very well off road, and will still hang a corner almost as good as a Mazda RX8. Obviously doesn't change direction as graceful or precise as RX8 but it will certainly keep within 5mph of the RX8 on really hard fast corners. On bumps it is still decently comfortable. I have a 5 speed stick with 3.73 gears with the ohv 4.0, so it's a little down on power but running a jet performance chip it is not too bad. Very reliable over the 23 years I've owned it.
Well Uncle Jake gave Ty a friends and family special deal on this Ranger, so its not an accurate value as to what they're worth. Maybe not surprisingly, we have gotten a couple offers on it, both for $10k, but that's recently in this crazy used car market. In checking KBB, they say $3500, which is completely ridiculous, no 4x4 Ranger is selling for that in Colorado right now, but looking at what similar trucks are actually going for on Craigslist and FB Marketplace, it looks like anywhere between $6k-$12k. Carvana has 2 2011's priced at over $20k! Thanks for commenting!
200,000 miles.. Dang that thing is clean. Mine is an 03 with 50,000 fewer miles that I bought at a tow yard for $1500 back in 2018. Looks alot more beat up then that... Mine is the 3.0 though so not as fast as that one however the problem with those SOHC 4.0's is the timing chain guides like to break and fixing that is an engine out job because the passenger side chain is on the back of the head. The older OHV 4.0's I think are the one's you're thinking of with the good reputation those are pretty robust engines, the SOHC varients not so much.
That may be, the red one in the beginning of the video is the older 4.0 and that sucker is dang near indestructible. So far so good on ours, but what was Ford thinking putting the timing chain on the back of the engine?! That truck does not have a lot of room to work, can't imagine what fun yanking that motor is... hope we don't get to find out any time soon. Thanks for the comment and enjoy your 03!
@@MotorsandMischief I'm not sure what Ford Engineers were thinking either. Basically they wanted to run overhead cams on the 4.0 and didn't want to redesign the block so they basically retrofitted the older OHV block. Thats why you have a jackshaft where the cam would normally be and the two chains (Front and Back) driven off of that. Some engines have an additional balance shaft in there so theres yet another chain to deal with. IMO all they did was create a giant clusterfuk of a motor. I mean they have descent power when everything is working as it should, its just when it all breaks well, theres a reason you see alot of them in the Junk Yard.

I own a 1997 Ford ranger cap and 1/2 is 5 sp I got right now 220,000 miles in the little truck takeoff like a new one I love this Little truck the only problem we have no AC from factory but it’s OK I love it👍4.0l and I change my oil and I use high mileage oil👌

Good detailed video. I have a 2000 4.0l 4x4. All stock except for a brake controller and aftermarket topper. I tow an utility trailer, 16 boat or 21 travel trailer.
Nice! Any issues with the transmission since you tow? The transmission in this rig blew up spectacularly about 6 months ago and we had to install a rebuilt one. But its 100% good to go now and it did have 250,000 on it when it went. We feel like we may not have changed the fluid often enough, but on the other hand, 250k is a good while for an auto trans, especially one that was in a truck that worked a lot of its life. I have an 06 XL 2.3 5 sp and the ride is the only gripe I have. Put 5-600 lbs in the bed and the ride softens out.
It’s actually a myth in the case of plastic or glass such as windshield that factory is better.
A windshield at a reputable place is a windshield!
Most aftermarket plastic window visors are the same as the factory! They’re just cheaper maybe better sometimes! They just don’t say Ford on them!

Love the truck! A couple months ago I was really close to buying a Ranger and this video did it for me. I purchased a 2005 Supercab 4.0 4wd w/137k miles. Still not road ready as I'm overhauling the suspension. Can't wait to have it on the road next week! Question - with the torsion key leveling kit did you have to put a spacer on your shock? Mine came with one but there isn't any room to put it on the shock. I am also not sure about what effect this would have on bottoming out the shocks. Also what tire size are you running? Man that's so cool!! So we've actually upsized the tires a little since this video, its now running 265/75R16 BFGoodrich KO2s. It was running the stock size tires in that video. As to the shocks, when Jake leveled the truck, we put new, longer shocks on it. The kit we used spec'd a longer shock and we can't remember what the length was, but we remember it was wrong. So we ended up going down to the parts store and just opening up shocks until we found one that fit. The right one turned out to be 2 inches longer than the truck at full axle droop. So we'd say you'll need that spacer or go with longer shocks like we did. Good luck with it and let us know how it goes!

Rangers can ride decent. Yours has the torsion bars cranked so it will be a rough ride.
This one has a leveling kit on it, we didn't crank up the torsion bars, so its using the stock bar adjustment. But yes, that aside, we agree Rangers can ride better than this one. Its mostly the shocks we have on it, they have very high rebound settings. Thanks for the comment!
In your opinion is a 2008 ranger with 159,000 miles worth it to buy I mean the truck is in super great condition drove nice no problems just bed floor needs to be replaced which I know someone who can do it but, the question said should I buy it or look for something else
Judging from our 2006 (in the video) 159k is barely broken in. Ours is at 260k and still going strong. As long as its only the bed, seems like a good deal with those few miles on it. Before you do the work on the bed, check your local Pull & Pay. We got our other Ranger rear-ended hard and we got an entire bed the same color off a junkyard truck that had been hit hard in the front and just swapped it over. Ended up being way cheaper than we expected. If you do go the fix the bed route, we highly recommend Raptor Liner after you're done, the stuff is awesome! And it'll hide welding lines if they aren't perfect. And if you have the bed off you can do both sides like we're doing with our F-250. Cool Ford Courier ad -- 39/27 mpg. I, and every auto parts store, city maintenance fleet, etc. where I used to see white Ford Rangers, would buy one if still made today. Not interested in today's version of the Ford Ranger with reduced mpg, toy-sized bed, and "ecoboost" (turbocharged) engine that either blows up or drinks oil at 100k miles.
Does it have drum or disc brakes?

Jake did extensive testing on it when he had it and he says it consistently got just under 15, with mostly city driving. It could get 16-17 with lots of highway, although keep in mind when Jake had it most of its life it had a lumber rack on it that wasn't super aerodynamic. It's chipped, and Ty says he can get 18 mpg with the econo tune and careful driving.
Give me an old American engine, some zip ties and a hammer and I’ll make it last 400 years
The 1998 Ranger ohv motor was actually sourced from Cologne Germany, but it's a solid pretty easy to work on engine.

I had a 1998 ranger with 360k miles on the original motor and transmission. Even after it was totaled from the front, it still drove. They really can be unkillable
That's awesome! The 96 we showed in the video has literally been hit on every side, including underneath, and had its driver's door ripped off. Once it was leaving the body shop after getting rear ended and on the corner outside of the body shop... it got rear ended again. Just turned around and took it back to the body shop lol. But even with all of that its still going strong and is a great little truck. So yeah, totally agree with you. They are hard to kill. Thanks for the comment!
That was a lot of good detail. You covered all the questions I had. Gas mileage of the 3 L compared to the 4 L, it is still in great shape even though it has been run through winter weather, the comfort of the ride, The aftermarket parts were a good tip to look out for thank you very much. I had a 2004 flareside 2X4, traded it in for a 2011 4.0 4X4 FX4. Still my daily driver. Bought an F150 last year but kept the Ranger. I refuse to part with it. Not the fanciest vehicle out there but it's fun to drive and so reliable. Love this little truck.

Great Truck i have an 2001 xlt Ranger with 337,000k it runs great my daily driver and took about 14 trips from Connecticut to Florida on original engine and transmission. Also have a 2016 Lincoln MKS EcoBoost. And to tell you the truth I Luv my Ranger better 💀🕷💀
I have an 06 3L automatic. Love it but hate the lag between 3,000 rpm and 3,600. Really sucks up hill but around the neighborhood it’s not bad. Didn’t realize so many people loved them till I got mine. Looks great in red!
The 3.0 is a very solid engine but yeah it just doesn't quite have the punch of the 4.0 so we totally agree with you. That said, we couldn't agree more that it looks awesome in red!

Bought my '04 FX4 Ranger XLT used with 94k miles about 2 years ago for $2,400.
It was in good shape for its age; it had a few scrapes, a ding in the outer corner of the driver-side door, the previous owner was a smoker (it took me around 6 months to fully eliminate the cigarette funk), and I had to replace the thermostat and serpentine belt.
Overall I'm pleased with it, I'm currently at 130k miles and it's been running like a champ.
My only real criticisms of the Ranger would be the lack of headroom in the cab - I'm 6' 2" and I find I have to either lean a bit to one side or slouch a little - if I don't do that my head constantly rubs against the headliner.
That, and it's *way* more thirsty than I had anticipated for a smaller truck.
That's awesome, the FX4 is a sweet truck. One of the things we didn't get into in the video due to time constraints is this Ranger has a Superchip's tuner, and one of the tunes is economy. It really helps with the gas mileage. Although it also has a performance tune and that one does the opposite lol
I have a 04 Ranger Sport 3.0l auto. Close to 300,000 miles runs great uses no oil never had any issues and I drive it pretty aggressively. It'll run 75-80 all day (that's the speed limits in TX) love my little truck
This was an excellent video. You got a great truck. I wish I could find one like this with the 4x4, rear hatch and 4L. Only thing I would change is the suspension to give it a smoother ride. Maybe a new deck with Bluetooth audio
I have a 1998 xlt 4x4 supercab Off Road Pkg, and it rides really nice. It had a nice ride when new as well. When the shocks and tires were replaced I've upgraded and it probably handles better now than new. Currently have Rancho shocks, cranked the torsion bars a little to level out the front, replaced the plastic sway bar end links with metal instead of plastic, and now running Michelin LTX AT2 265/70R16 tires. I've had it since new and still love driving it today. It's a 4.0 with 3.73 limited slip rear with a 5 speed manual transmission (Mazda Transmission all original except clutch replaced).
We are on our 4th Ranger. We had an 83, 88, 90 and our current 11.
Our current Ranger is a XLT super cab 4X4 with the 4.0 V6, auto transmission, LSD, tow pkg.
We added a K&N intake and a 3” FlowMaster exhaust. (After these mods we now get 25mpg on the freeway with the cruise set on 75mph). We also added 2 tone paint (factory silver over metallic red), custom upholstery to match the exterior colors, custom wheels, running boards, Line-X spray in bed liner, adjustable rear air shocks.
I change the oil every 4K miles with Mobile 1 full synthetic. I also change the front and rear differentials, transfer case and transmission flush every 30K miles.
We use our Ranger mostly for work around our property. We don’t abuse it, but we do work it. Many times we have at least a yard of top soil in the bed.
Two years ago we had to get some things from my wife’s family farm in MT. It’s a 12 hour drive from our home in north central WA state.
Returning home, the truck was loaded with equipment. I put 75# of air in the shocks and 50# in the tires.
When we got on I-90, I set the cruise on 85mph and was still getting 23mpg.
Most of its life is used for hauling stuff but when it’s empty, it hauls ass.
I did race a Chevy Tahoe a few months ago on the highway.
When the light turned green I hit the gas (I was in a hurry). Apparently the Tahoe driver thought I was wanting to race, so I mashed the pedal to the floor.
I know his Tahoe probably had a 5.3 V8. We couldn’t pass each other until we hit 105 mph and his governor kicked in and that’s when my Ranger pulled away. When I hit 110mph, I let off the gas. I gave him a “Thumbs Up” (ie; thanks for the race), but he refused to acknowledge me.
I suppose he was butt hurt that his V8 lost to a 4.0 V6. 😂
I did learn that my Ford up shifts from 4th to 5th at 100mph.
Our 11 Ranger only has 35K original miles. My wife and I are in our 50s and we plan on letting our relatives fight over our Ranger after we’re dead and gone.
How's the transmission currently? I'm looking to buy a 4.0l v6 2010 here soon with 200k miles for 2600 bucks. But not sure because that sounds sketchy at that price in 2024

If the truck was maintained properly then there shouldn’t be any problems.
Some early 2010 Ranger’s had an issue with engine knock.
Take it for a long test drive. If the transmission is slipping or can’t find the right gear, then the transmission is getting ready to go
I had an 02 Ranger with the 3L.. thing had 350 000 Miles before it got written off in an accident! RAN GREAT!!!! i since got a used 2006 Ranger and still have it today.. great truck

No, that’s not common with aftermarket tow bars!
To prevent rust by a Kurt made in the US towbar!
Then wash them and put car polish on them every three times you wash the car!
If you ever get rust. Brush it off with a wire brush.
Sand it clean. Then spray it black with automotive spray paint. Spray two coats at least. Then spray in automotive clearcoat, then continue waxing it every three months at minimum.
No wrong! So-called cold air intake can actually lose you power & money!
Cold air intake can actually be hot air intake!!
The best thing to do for your intake is to put a high flow paper filter on and change it every three or four months.
Have had every incarnation of the Ford Ranger. 2.3, 3.0 and 4.0 . Great buy but try to find one now.
You could put seat covers over seats to prevent the tears.
Sometimes you can replace the seats on Facebook marketplace for around $75-$100.
Best keep up on the maintenance. Change fluids at the right time or earlier . Trans ,cooling system ,RUST all kill these vehicles .

I have two Rangers a 1995 3.o Vulcan funny thing about this one is I paid $450 over 10 years ago and it had 160,000 the mileage didn't work back then so I do know who many miles she have and still running strong...then I have a 1997 4.0 Cyclone love it to it has over 200,000 runs like a champ Power Rangers

This is fantastic! I have a 2007 ranger very similar to this one except it has a manual transmission, looking forward to a long and happy life with it! At least until I have kids.
Our advice is to keep it if you can even with the kids. When they're really little you'll have issues cause no car seat but when they get big enough they'll love riding in the jump seats and we can tell you from personal experience,: they grow up fast and it seems like no time before you're back in a position where the truck make sense. Great video! On my second one, sold my first one w/280,000 miles and it’s still running strong. Rusty but running. Also have a 2003 Edge with 69,000 miles and it’s also a great truck. Again great review!

A “Ford Ranger“ is the same thing as a Mazda B 2000, B 2,300 or Mazda B 2,400.
Ive got an '03 FX4 ranger and it rode awesome until i put the aitbags on back so i could pull a camper. You're blaiming the harsh ride on the truck. take the airbags off and it's a different ride. Great trucks, i love my ranger.

The 2011 is still the best. For the 2019 looks good but that's all. No pulling power. 4 cylinder with a turbo. American let Ford know to bring the 6 cylinder back.
I have a somewhat rusty '96 B4000 (OHV 4L) with a slipping slushbox. When I floor it, it only revs out for one gear, it's weird. Don't understand how it could stay at 3000rpm and stop pulling much after shifting up one gear, then shift up again with the throttle body wide open. Still it just survived a 700 mile road trip.
Bought an abused '97 tacoma with low dirty oil and hopefully just a valve cover leak because I felt bad or something. Regret it, at least it seems to have no rust. Should probably have swapped the transmission on my current one with a manual, it would've been perfectly fine.
The automatic to manual conversion on the 96 is pretty straightforward. We looked into doing it on the 06 in the video and you pretty much need a donor vehicle to get everything you need to make the swap work so we passed. We hear you, always sucks to let something go. Rust is horrible tho. We're fixing all the rust on our Project F-250 series and man oh man, its a lot of welding and cleaning and fixing. It's horrible lol. Can't go wrong with a good ol' Taco, hope its just the valve cover. Good luck, and thanks for commenting!

Original timing chains for the mileage that’s surprising I like the 3.0L in theses you can do a lot of upgrades to the 3.0L cams headers upgrade rocker arms they use to make a drop in whipple supercharger for the 3.0L I’m currently looking for one I just put a new fresh long block 3.0L in mine

I have a 2011 Ranger, XLT, Super cab, 4 door, 4.0 V6, shadow gray metallic (the official color name).. Bought it new with 18 miles on it. Now, 10 years and a few months later, 155K or so. Bone stock. Super reliable, has worked and played and taken me on road trips, hauled arcade games (I'm in the hobby), moved many things and pulled trailers. I've taken great care of it and it's never let me down. The money light is on for the bad catalytic converter that I need to fix before next April. But it still faithfully does the work commute every day. Everything still works fine on it (A few things have been fixed in recent years, nothing major). Love my truck!
That's awesome! Sounds like a great truck and we love how they just keep doing an honest day's work, day in and day out. Little advice on the cat front, we just had to eat an $800 aftermarket cat because our other project truck did not play well with it after 8 months. We replaced the aftermarket cat with a factory cat and the truck is happy now. There are some great aftermarket cats out there but be sure to do your research so you don't have to repeat what we did. Seriously, any functioning truck for under $2500 is a steal these days. A 1986 Ford F-350 just sold next to us for $10k. Wasn't restored or anything, nice shape, but just an old truck. Our 2 cents? $2200 Canadian is a steal for a supercab 4x4 with the 4.0 and 180k miles is not a ton for those trucks. Ours has 260,000 miles. Good luck!

Nice review Sir.. today 2014 I just bought a used 2011 Ranger only 33,xxx miles on it.. last 2 weeks.. wow.. I'm super happy with the truck it's like brand new .. 😂.. most of my friends shock cuz they all get Tacoma.. and I can not afford it.. but my Ranger to me it's the best .. low miles.. it's look so new.. first owner keep that truck for go out.. another truck he doing work.. I feel lucky that I bought it..
I had a 98 ford ranger xlt 4.0 engine was awesome but salt got the best of it and the frame snapped like a pretzel 😢 I've never had good luck with ford trucks

Yeah, my 99 was rusted out bad and I was told it could snap any time. Sorry to hear it happened to you. The used car dealer I bought mine from had a 2005 xlt 4.0 on his lot and I stopped in to chat. He gave me a good deal on it with a trade-in for my rusted rig. The 99 was an automatic, 2005 is a manual every which way. Really love it and take really good care of it. Purrs like a kitten at 187k. I did have a rough spell when my left knee hurt bad and I couldn't shift, so couldn't drive for a few months. I'm not planning on selling it, but next time around I would probably get an automatic. Simple is nice though. Also, with our vehicles I spray the undersides with regular Fluid Film and let me tell you it is amazing how well it works. I can do my truck and her car for 4 or 5 cans. Redo every fall, but it doesn't take as much the next go around. I did try the black special Fluid Film but didn't care for it as much.
Maybe keep your eye out for another ranger and if it has a decent frame go for it?
My 2003 has under 100,000 miles , it has a colour matched fiberglass bed cover that keeps the back end quiet . Mine is the 2 wheel drive Edge model not the 4 wheel drive , but that's fine with me .

I just bought a 2003 Ranger with 139k Monday for $3k. It's had a lot of suspension parts replaced but the sheet metal is crap. It's my 3rd Ranger. The others were a 1991 and 1996. I've been happy with them.

Currently it is on its 4th transmission as it blew its original shortly after this video, and the company that did the rebuild for us apparently doesn’t know how to actually rebuild transmissions. Would you reccomend a 2003 Ford ranger XLT supercab for $6000?? It seems pricey for an 03 but I like the ride. I haven't bought it yet
It really depends on where you are and the condition of that particular Ranger. The one in this video, for example, would be worth twice that in Denver because Uncle Jake was fastidious about its maintenance and every single thing on it is perfect, no oil leaks, nothing needing attention. So if the 2003 you're looking at has been well cared for and doesn't need anything, $6k seems very reasonable. If it has a lot of deferred maintenance, has rust or body damage or needs anything major then maybe that's a bit steep. Good luck with it!
@@MotorsandMischief It doesn't have the drop down seats in the back, it'll need new speakers and mirror, and new cruise control switches. Possibly a new ignition and door key bc the ignition key doesn't open the doors. It's also doing this weird thing where you have to leave the key in for 5 seconds, hear 3 "anti theft" lock beeps, then it'll turn on.
If you don't hear 3 beeps it just won't turn on.... or even crank..is this a big issue? Or something small I can turn off?

Help!!! I've an 07 Ranger 205,000 mi that keeps dying every 6 mos, they keep putting a fuelpump in - factory Ford pump, & it keeps dying mos later! Any ideas?? I live in Denver.
I've a 1994 that is My back-up truck & have only put in one pump 378,000 mi.never an issues..
Man that's got to be frustrating! If you bench test an old pump does it work out of the truck? If the old pump works on the bunch, sure sounds like a ground or power to the the pump, something that's being disconnected when the new pump is installed which fixes/cleans the connection, then after 6 months corrosion or whatever is building up and killing the connection. If the pump is truly fried, then 1) are you running it really low on fuel between fill ups? We have a Suburban that will reliably eat fuel pumps if you take it below an 1/8th of a tank because the pump uses the fuel to cool itself and it overheats with low fuel. If we fill it at 1/4 tank the pumps last forever. 2) if you're not running it low on fuel the only other thing we can think of is maybe a power surge is frying the pumps so perhaps replace the fuses and relay going to the pump and see if that helps at all. Man good luck with it, that's a head scratcher!

The last time it did this, in April they noted that there was corrosion at the connector @ fuelpump. the shop mgr said they'd put a new connector on. i've been trying to figure out where , how the corrosion got started in 1st place as the truck was never a rustbelt vehicle, however i found evidence that the owner lived in Florida for a bit after starting life in N. Mexico, and may have got caught in hurricane surge thus getting salt water up in there, possible driven on beach and splashed salt water too,- i totally frown on these practices, as it could ruin newer cars leaving 2nd owners w a nightmare!!
Yes i do understand the pumps rely enough fuel in tanks to lubricate & keep cool. I've been filling at the .4 tank as well, Ironically enough , the '94 i mentioned, I've owned for 21 yrs now , and alot of times ran it to 8th tank status alot, and the pump didn't fail til 350k, well i got lucky there.
So back to the 007. the pump was warranted on the last rem, and was bench tested at the supplier and they said it was good. So, yes i agree w you that it is obvious that the power is being disrupted somewhere else now, or the corrosion is back @ connector. I'm wondering if it might b the inertia switch is intermitedly malfunctioning , as it gets reset eveytime a repair is made to fuel sys., possible the relays could b at fault. but they keep checking good, however the '94 had a false fuelpump fail when it was about 10yo and it turned out that the connector pins at the relays became loose, the guys at that shop were ford gurus and fixed it.,- - that shop no longer has those guys as they've long retired, plus have sold it long ago..uggh!, - that shop was ,-
Lakewood auto electric, still carries the same name but not the ford gurus.
The truck is at Tapps' garage which is the shop whos been fighting this problem w me, tomorrow they'll be back at it in discovery, I'm going to mention that the corrosion may b back like you'd said.

@@robertfrazier7606 Might be the Inertia shutoff switch under the glove box. If the truck were to get into an accident it shuts off the pump. Mine accidently got kicked one day and the truck stalled out going down the road. I was told I needed a new fuel pump which was not true. I replaced the pump and the truck still wouldn't start. Yeah I just got the truck back yesterday, they found corrosion allover back side of in cab fuse/relay/inertia swich panel on the pass side floor kick ., they repaired some damage wires , cleaned everything and coated it with dialectic grease

Year and a half ago I bought my 2000 XLT 3.0 automatic 4x2 extended cab with the jump seats and short bed. 78,268 original miles for $2500. My first truck ever at 73 years old. Good condition. No rust (former California truck). Runs great. Metallic Red with tan cloth interior. I want to lower it with a 4/5 kit maybe this summer when I have some time. I just use it as a daily driver and for stuff from Home Depot and the like. No off roading here in suburban Chicago. Like your channel. Subscribed. Good video. Thanks

I own the Orkin style truck, same running boards, wheels and color. Purchased new January 2012 in Pittsburgh. With loan the total cost was 27,000. Replaced the clutch at 100,000 and blew out the a/c compressor at about 60,000. Its a great truck. I had the underside coated with an oil product at Steel City undercoating after some research. What made a lot of sense was the coatings lock in any moisture and the rusting process continues. Whereas the oil will penetrate the metal. BTW took her up to Watkins Glenn during covid to kayak and bike and to my surprise the track was open @ 3 laps for $30. Glad I didn't have the kayaks at the time, but what a trip!

I have a 2007 Ranger XLT and it's in fair condition. But, recently I've been getting a delay when I start the engine. It is a 4.0L. I changed the fuel filter and the battery but, I'm still getting a delay when I start the engine...delay meaning it just spins like it wants to start but, it doesn't until I turn the key off and then turn the key on and then it starts. I'm thinking it must be the fuel pump going bad. Could that be the problem??
There's a check valve in the fuel pump that keeps the system pressurized. That valve can go bad and then the truck will take excessive cranking to start. The way to test is to key on, listen for the fuel pump running, key off, key on, about 3-4 times until you're sure the system is pressurized, then start. If the truck fires right up, then that check valve is the issue and you need a new pump. If it still cranks like crazy before it starts, its more likely something like a camshaft or crankshaft position sensor is going out and the computer is looking for the rpm signal before firing off the injectors. Check out the Ranger forums, there's some great resources for exactly this problem that will help you troubleshoot if its not the fuel pump check valve. Good luck and thanks for commenting!

So you are correct that generally speaking the 3rd gen ended in 2011, however there was a short 2012 run produced for fleet sales, at least according to wikipedia which is where we got a lot of the info for this video. It’s not the springs. It likely the aftermarket shocks that provide a such harsh ride. Many of the aftermarket shocks are quite a bit stiffer than OEM.

The oil residue from your cold air intake is coating your MAF sensor and other parts. You also should really re-tune your truck because you are giving more air than original design and that old ECU can't adjust for it. What performance difference did you notice? Is it running lean? I would put original air box back on if it was my Ranger. Just sayin
Not sure what we said in the video to make it seem like the truck has a MAF issue but we use K&Ns on all our rigs and have for over 20 years, as well as in the Baja 1000 on race trucks we crewed for. Never have we had a problem with oil bothering the MAF except one time with the new guy cleaned and reoiled the filter and put waaaaaaay too much oil on it. As far as the time, we have a Superchips tune on it, even tho the MAF will read the increased airflow and adjust accordingly. But thanks for the comment!

You tune your engines after changing airflow and the average Joe who buys this filter can put too much oil on it and cause issues down stream. Thanks for making my point. 95% of people put these on and never even re-oil them which is not good either.
I have a 1998 4x4 supercab xlt 4x4 off road pkg and upgraded to Rancho shocks (with front torsion bars cranked to level it out) and it rides great. I replace the factory tires with Michelin AT2's in a 265/70/R16 and it goes very well off road, and will still hang a corner almost as good as a Mazda RX8. Obviously doesn't change direction as graceful or precise as RX8 but it will certainly keep within 5mph of the RX8 on really hard fast corners. On bumps it is still decently comfortable. I have a 5 speed stick with 3.73 gears with the ohv 4.0, so it's a little down on power but running a jet performance chip it is not too bad. Very reliable over the 23 years I've owned it.
Sounds like an awesome truck! We're big fans of the adjustable Rancho's; we've had great luck with them on a lot of different rigs.

Well Uncle Jake gave Ty a friends and family special deal on this Ranger, so its not an accurate value as to what they're worth. Maybe not surprisingly, we have gotten a couple offers on it, both for $10k, but that's recently in this crazy used car market. In checking KBB, they say $3500, which is completely ridiculous, no 4x4 Ranger is selling for that in Colorado right now, but looking at what similar trucks are actually going for on Craigslist and FB Marketplace, it looks like anywhere between $6k-$12k. 200,000 miles.. Dang that thing is clean. Mine is an 03 with 50,000 fewer miles that I bought at a tow yard for $1500 back in 2018. Looks alot more beat up then that... Mine is the 3.0 though so not as fast as that one however the problem with those SOHC 4.0's is the timing chain guides like to break and fixing that is an engine out job because the passenger side chain is on the back of the head. The older OHV 4.0's I think are the one's you're thinking of with the good reputation those are pretty robust engines, the SOHC varients not so much.
That may be, the red one in the beginning of the video is the older 4.0 and that sucker is dang near indestructible. So far so good on ours, but what was Ford thinking putting the timing chain on the back of the engine?! That truck does not have a lot of room to work, can't imagine what fun yanking that motor is... hope we don't get to find out any time soon. Thanks for the comment and enjoy your 03!
@@MotorsandMischief I'm not sure what Ford Engineers were thinking either. Basically they wanted to run overhead cams on the 4.0 and didn't want to redesign the block so they basically retrofitted the older OHV block. Thats why you have a jackshaft where the cam would normally be and the two chains (Front and Back) driven off of that. Some engines have an additional balance shaft in there so theres yet another chain to deal with. IMO all they did was create a giant clusterfuk of a motor. I mean they have descent power when everything is working as it should, its just when it all breaks well, theres a reason you see alot of them in the Junk Yard.
