  • A colossal mega project is underway in California, today we explore some of the insane engineering behind this water transfer project. 24 kilometers south of Sacramento, the project will feature intake valves along the Sacramento River, each capable of handling 85,000 liters per second. These intakes will filter water through fine screens to protect aquatic life before channeling it into the tunnel.

    If California would simply allow lake Tulare, a natural lake, to exist, then all of these water storage issues would be taken care of. It would also recharge the aquafer, prevent the central valley from subsiding, and keep out salt water incursion as well. Instead, they are draining the lake as fast as possible to get the land back for the rich agricultural concerns who killed the lake in the first place. As usual, California government policy is up for the highest bidder.

    6:40 Make no mistake, the aqueduct delivers water to Farms then cities. Ag and industry use 75% of the state's drinking water. We grow rice in the desert which is a pretty stupid use of a limited supply.

    • @archstanton_live
      @archstanton_live 19 дней назад +6

      Rice is grown in the delta, hardly a desert. Much of the cotton once grown in the San Joaquine Valley has been curtailed. The major problem with this project is that it enhances saltwater intrusion into the delta which provides both drinking and irrigation water for many folks in the east bay and western central valley.

    Southern California gets huge downpours of rain that they send out to the ocean as quickly as possible to avoid flooding. Why can they not save a lot of these downpours in reservoirs?

  • @bwhog

    65 kilometers long, 11 meters in diameter... That equates to a full capacity of about 214,000 acre feet of water just in the volume of the tunnel and, in that respect, establishes an underground reservoir of not insignificant size. Thing is, this can't be an incremental project. Until the whole thing is finished, you don't get to move even a drop of water.

    Bizarre. Nobody watching this video has any idea what 85,000 liters per second means. Large American water projects measure volumes and flow rates in cubic feet and acre feet. Much harder to fact check as all of the water use databases are in cubic feet and acre feet too. Yeah, yeah, I know one can convert these units, but why?

    Yes, remove water from a place with water and send it to the desert where they need water, eventually making both locations.... a desert. . how about stop building homes in the middle of a desert area, how about stopping golf courses from using the massive amounts of water that they due because.. people need their golf . The dam state will punish individual home owners for their water usage but allow businesses to pump out gallon after gallon.
    I've even heard of some plans / talks / thoughts on taking water from the Mississippi river and via pipe lines send it to the west but, again MOVE OUT OF THE DAM DESERT, Use what you have and if you can't make it.. well it is California, we won't miss you.

    You make the project sound "all good." You miss a big point: preventing the water from flowing through the delta will drive many species of fish to extinction. The delta needs the water to prevent collapse of the ecosystem. You know why big ag wants this? Money. They keep planting more almonds. 1,000,000 acres of almonds already! And every single almond uses 1 gallon of water to grow. Let's see, more almonds or save the fish and the delta environment? I side with the fish. Almonds aren't going to go extinct. By the way, we export most of those almonds. Again, big money for big ag. Pretty one-sided presentation.
